Hypercyclic operators that commute with the Bergman backward shift

The backward shift on the Bergman space of the unit disc is known to be hypercyclic (meaning: it has a dense orbit). Here we ask: ``Which operators that commute with inherit its hypercyclicity?' We show that the problem reduces to the study of operators of the form where is a holomorphic self-map of the unit disc that multiplies the Dirichlet space into itself, and that the question of hypercyclicity for such an operator depends on how freely is allowed to approach the unit circle as .

     

The backward shift on the space of Cauchy transforms

This note examines the subspaces of the space of Cauchy transforms of measures on the unit circle that are invariant under the backward shift operator . We examine this question when the space of Cauchy transforms is endowed with both the norm and weak topologies.

Rank-one cross commutators on backward shift invariant subspaces on the bidisk

For a backward shift invariant subspace N in H^2（Г^2）, the operators Sz and Sw on N are defined by Sz = PNTz｜N and Sw, = PNTw｜N, where PN is the orthogonal projection from L^2（Г^2） onto N. We give a characterization of N satisfying rank [Sz, Sw^＊] = 1.     

Adjoints of a class of composition operators

Separating classes of composition operators via subnormal condition

Several classes have been considered to study the weak subnormalities of Hilbert space operators. One of them is -hypnormality, which comes from the Bram-Halmos criterion for subnormal operators. In this note we consider -hyponormality, which is the parallel version corresponding to the Embry characterization for subnormal operators. We characterize -hyponormality of composition operators via -th Radon-Nikodym derivatives and present some examples to distinguish the classes.

     

Compact composition operators on the Smirnov class

We show that a composition operator on the Smirnov class is compact if and only if it is compact on some (equivalently: every) Hardy space for . Along the way we show that for composition operators on both the formally weaker notion of boundedness, and a formally stronger notion we call metric compactness, are equivalent to compactness.

     

Norm-attaining composition operators on the Bloch spaces

We prove that every composition operator C? on the Bloch space (modulo constant functions) attains its norm and characterize the norm-attaining composition operators on the little Bloch space (modulo constant functions). We also identify the extremal functions for ‖C?‖ in both cases.     

A new class of operators and a description of adjoints of composition operators

Starting with a general formula, precise but difficult to use, for the adjoint of a composition operator on a functional Hilbert space, we compute an explicit formula on the classical Hardy Hilbert space for the adjoint of a composition operator with rational symbol. To provide a foundation for this formula, we study an extension to the definitions of composition, weighted composition, and Toeplitz operators to include symbols that are multiple-valued functions. These definitions can be made on any Banach space of analytic functions on a plane domain, but in this work, our attention is focused on the basic properties needed for the application to operators on the standard Hardy and Bergman Hilbert spaces on the unit disk.     

The backward shift on Dirichlet-type spaces

We study the backward shift operator on Hilbert spaces (for ) which are norm equivalent to the Dirichlet-type spaces . Although these operators are unitarily equivalent to the adjoints of the forward shift operator on certain weighted Bergman spaces, our approach is direct and completely independent of the standard Cauchy duality. We employ only the classical Hardy space theory and an elementary formula expressing the inner product on in terms of a weighted superposition of backward shifts.

     

Compact differences of composition operators

A characterization of compact difference is given for composition operators acting on the standard weighted Bergman spaces and necessary conditions are given on a larger scale of weighted Dirichlet spaces. Conditions are given under which a composition operator can be written as a finite sum of composition operators modulo the compacts. The additive structure of the space of composition operators modulo the compact operators is investigated further and a sufficient condition is given to insure that two composition operators lie in the same component.     

Adjoints of rationally induced composition operators

We give an elementary proof of a formula recently obtained by Hammond, Moorhouse, and Robbins for the adjoint of a rationally induced composition operator on the Hardy space H² [Christopher Hammond, Jennifer Moorhouse, Marian E. Robbins, Adjoints of composition operators with rational symbol, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 341 (2008) 626-639]. We discuss some variants and implications of this formula, and use it to provide a sufficient condition for a rationally induced composition operator adjoint to be a compact perturbation of a weighted composition operator.     

Products of multiplication composition and differentiation operators on weighted Bergman spaces

Let ψ be a holomorphic function on the open unit disk D and φ a holomorphic self-map of D. Let C_φ, M_ψ and D denote the composition, multiplication and differentiation operator, respectively. We consider linear operators induced by products of these operators on weighted Bergman spaces on D. The boundedness is established by using Carleson-type measures.     

Unitary equivalence of one-parameter groups of Toeplitz and composition operators

The composition operators on H² whose symbols are hyperbolic automorphisms of the unit disk fixing ±1 comprise a one-parameter group and the analytic Toeplitz operators coming from covering maps of annuli centered at the origin whose radii are reciprocals also form a one-parameter group. Using the eigenvectors of the composition operators and of the adjoints of the Toeplitz operators, a direct unitary equivalence is found between the restrictions to zH² of the group of Toeplitz operators and the group of adjoints of these composition operators. On the other hand, it is shown that there is not a unitary equivalence of the groups of Toeplitz operators and the adjoints of the composition operators on the whole of H², but there is a similarity between them.     

Derivative-free characterizations of bounded composition operators between Lipschitz spaces

Norms of composition operators with rational symbol

We compute the norms of composition operators with rational symbols that satisfy certain properties, extending Christopher Hammond's methods on operators with linear fractional symbols. This leads to a host of new examples of composition operators whose norms are calculable.     

Adjoints of composition operators with rational symbol

Building on techniques developed by Cowen and Gallardo-Gutiérrez, we find a concrete formula for the adjoint of a composition operator with rational symbol acting on the Hardy space H². We consider some specific examples, comparing our formula with several results that were previously known.
