We prove that paranormal spaces of character are -
collectionwise Hausdorff assuming the set-theoretic principle . This gives an affirmative answer to problem 197 in Problems I wish I could solve, by W. S. Watson (Open Problems in Topology (1990), 37-76).

In this paper, we establish formulas for the configuration of a special class of irreducible representations of the Cuntz algebra , . These irreducible representations arise as subrepresentations of naturally occurring representations of acting in and arise from consideration of multiresolution wavelet filters.

In this paper we consider the theta correspondence between the sets and when is a nonarchimedean local field and . Our main theorem determines all the elements of that occur in the correspondence. The answer involves distinguished representations. As a corollary, we characterize all the elements of that occur in the theta correspondence between and . We also apply our main result to prove a case of a new conjecture of S.S. Kudla concerning the first occurrence of a representation in the theta correspondence.

The paper is concerned with order-topological characterizations of topological Riesz spaces, in particular spaces of measurable functions, not containing Riesz isomorphic or linearly homeomorphic copies of or .

It has been asked (see R. Strichartz, Analysis of the Laplacian, J. Funct. Anal. 52 (1983), 48-79) whether one could extend to a reasonable class of non-compact Riemannian manifolds the boundedness of the Riesz transforms that holds in . Several partial answers have been given since. In the present paper, we give positive results for under very weak assumptions, namely the doubling volume property and an optimal on-diagonal heat kernel estimate. In particular, we do not make any hypothesis on the space derivatives of the heat kernel. We also prove that the result cannot hold for under the same assumptions. Finally, we prove a similar result for the Riesz transforms on arbitrary domains of .

This paper presents an explicit relation between the two sets which are well-known generators of the center of the universal enveloping algebra of the Lie algebra : one by Capelli (1890) and the other by Gelfand (1950). Our formula is motivated to give an exact analogy for the classical Newton's formula connecting the elementary symmetric functions and the power sum symmetric functions. The formula itself can be deduced from a more general result on Yangians obtained by Nazarov. Our proof is elementary and has an advantage in its direct accessibility.

In this paper, it is shown that the group algebra is right CS if and only if . Moreover, when , then is also CS as a module over its center.

We obtain nonexistence conditions of a solution for of the congruence , where , and are integers, and is a prime power. We give nonexistence conditions of the form for , , , , , and of the form for , , , . Furthermore, we complete some tables concerned with Waring's problem in -adic fields that were computed by Hardy and Littlewood.

In 1992, Móricz, Schipp and Wade proved the a.e. convergence of the double means of the Walsh-Fourier series () for functions in ( is the unit square). This paper aims to demonstrate the sharpness of this result. Namely, we prove that for all measurable function we have a function such as and does not converge to a.e. (in the Pringsheim sense).

We give a characterization theorem for the -normalized subgroups of , where is any commutative ring. This is the last of the simple Chevalley-Demazure group-schemes for which such a theorem is lacking.

Two -topologies and given on the same set , are called transversal if their union generates the discrete topology on . The topologies and are -complementary if they are transversal and their intersection is the cofinite topology on . We establish that for any connected Tychonoff topology there exists a connected Tychonoff transversal one. Another result is that no -complementary topology exists for the maximal topology constructed by van Douwen on the rational numbers. This gives a negative answer to Problem 162 from Open Problems in Topology (1990).

A criterion is given for when the associated graded ring of an ideal satisfies Serre's condition . As an application, the integrality and quasi-Gorensteinness of such rings is investigated.

Let be a locally compact Hausdorff space and let be the Banach space of all bounded complex Radon measures on . Let and be the -rings generated by the compact subsets and by the compact subsets of , respectively. The members of are called Baire sets of and those of are called -Borel sets of (since they are precisely the -bounded Borel sets of ). Identifying with the Banach space of all Borel regular complex measures on , in this note we characterize weakly compact subsets of in terms of the Baire and -Borel restrictions of the members of . These characterizations permit us to give a generalization of a theorem of Dieudonné which is stronger and more natural than that given by Grothendieck.

Let be the 7-dimensional irreducible representations of . We decompose the tensor power into irreducible representations of and obtain all irreducible representations of in the decomposition. This generalizes Weyl's work on the construction of irreducible representations and decomposition of tensor products for classical groups to the exceptional group .

Given a -linear operator from a product of spaces into a Banach space , our main result proves the equivalence between being completely continuous, having an -valued separately continuous extension to the product of the biduals and having a regular associated polymeasure. It is well known that, in the linear case, these are also equivalent to being weakly compact, and that, for , being weakly compact implies the conditions above but the converse fails.

Mathias (Happy families, Ann. Math. Logic. 12 (1977), 59-111) proved that, assuming the existence of a Mahlo cardinal, it is consistent that CH holds and every set of reals in is -Ramsey with respect to every selective ultrafilter . In this paper, we show that the large cardinal assumption cannot be weakened.
