Summary LetG be a separable locally compact group with dual space. consists of all equivalence classes of irreducible unitary representations ofG, and is endowed with the Fell-topology. We study the topological properties in of the square-integrable representations ofG. [ is square-integrable provided there is a coordinate functiong((g)v, v),gG, for which is inL 2(G) w.r.t. left Haar measure onG.]SupposeG contains an open normal subgroupN of the formeKN n e whereK is compact. (All groups with a compact invariant neighborhood of the identity, [IN] groups, satisfy this condition.) In this case we show that if is square-integrable then {} is an open point of.Finally, our techniques are used to prove this result for arbitrary (non connected) nilpotent Lie groups.  相似文献

Let A be a self-adjoint elliptic second-order differential operator, let (, ) be an inner gap in the spectrum of A, and let B(t) = A + tW * W, where W is a differential operator of higher order. Conditions are obtained under which the spectrum of the operator B(t) in the gap (, ) is either discrete, or does not accumulate to the right-hand boundary of the spectral gap, or is finite. The quantity N(, A, W, ), (, ), > 0 (the number of eigenvalues of the operator B(t) passing the point (, ) as t increases from 0 to ) is considered. Estimates of N(, A, W, ) are obtained. For the perturbation W * W of a special form, the asymptotics of N(, A, W, ) as + is given. Bibliography: 5 titles.  相似文献

In this paper we introduce left linear theories of exponentN (a set) on the setL as mapsL ×L N (l, ) l · L such that for alll L and , L N the relation (l · ) =l( · ) holds, where · L N is given by ( · )(i) = (i),i N. We assume thatL has a unit, that is an element L N withl · =l, for alll L, and · = , for all L N . Next, left (resp. right)L-modules andL-M-bimodules and their homomorphisms are defined and lead to categoriesL-Mod, Mod-L, andL-M-Mod. These categories are algebraic categories and their free objects are described explicitly. Finally, Hom(X, Y) andX Y are introduced and their properties are investigated.Herrn Professor Dr. D. LetH=(A, B) be a pair of HermitianN×N matrices. A complex number is an eigenvalue ofH ifdet(A–B)=0 (we include = ifdetB=0). For nonsingularH (i.e., for which some is not an eigenvalue), we show precisely which eigenvalues can be characterized as k + =sup{inf{*A:*B=1,S},SS k},S k being the set of subspaces of C N of codimensionk–1.Dedicated to the memory of our friend and colleague Branko NajmanResearch supported by NSERC of Canada and the I.W.Killam FoundationProfessor Najman died suddenly while this work was at its final stage. Summary Denote by k a class of familiesP={P} of distributions on the line R1 depending on a general scalar parameter , being an interval of R1, and such that the moments µ1()=xdP ,...,µ2k ()=x 2k dP are finite, 1 (), ..., k (), k+1 () ..., k () exist and are continuous, with 1 () 0, and j +1 ()= 1 () j () +[2() -1()2] j ()/ 1 (), J=2, ..., k. Let 1x=x 1 + ... +x n/n, 2=x 1 2 + ... +x n 2/n, ..., k =(x 1 k + ... +x n k/n denote the sample moments constructed for a sample x1, ..., xn from a population with distribution Pg. We prove that the estimator of the parameter by the method of moments determined from the equation 1= 1() and depending on the observations x1, ..., xn only via the sample mean ¯x is asymptotically admissible (and optimal) in the class k of the estimators determined by the estimator equations of the form 0 () + 1 () 1 + ... + k () k =0 if and only ifP k .The asymptotic admissibility (respectively, optimality) means that the variance of the limit, as n (normal) distribution of an estimator normalized in a standard way is less than the same characteristic for any estimator in the class under consideration for at least one 9 (respectively, for every ).The scales arise of classes 1 2... of parametric families and of classes 1 2 ... of estimators related so that the asymptotic admissibility of an estimator by the method of moments in the class k is equivalent to the membership of the familyP in the class k .The intersection consists only of the families of distributions with densities of the form h(x) exp {C0() + C1() x } when for the latter the problem of moments is definite, that is, there is no other family with the same moments 1 (), 2 (), ...Such scales in the problem of estimating the location parameter were predicted by Linnik about 20 years ago and were constructed by the author in [1] (see also [2, 3]) in exact, not asymptotic, formulation.Translated from Problemy Ustoichivosti Stokhasticheskikh Modelei, pp. 41–47, 1981.  相似文献

Let V and W be vector spaces over a division ring D and LD (V, W) the set of all linear transformations from V into W. For LD(W, V), let (LD (V, W), ) denote the semigroup LD (V, W) with the operation * defined by * = for all , LD(V, W). By a unit-regular semigroup we mean a semigroup S with identity having the property that for each a S, a = aua for some unit u S. The main purpose of this paper is to prove the following statements. The semigroup (LD(V, W), ) is regular if and only if V = {0}, W = {0} or is an isomorphism from W onto V. The semigroup (LD (V, W), ) is unit-regular if and only if (i) V = {0}, (ii) W = {0} or (iii) is an isomorphism from W onto V and dimD V .  相似文献

We study the limiting behavior of the weighted central paths{(x(), s())} > 0 in linear programming at both = 0 and = . We establish the existence of a partition (B ,N ) of the index set { 1, ,n } such thatx i() ands j () as fori B , andj N , andx N (),s B () converge to weighted analytic centers of certain polytopes. For allk 1, we show that thekth order derivativesx (k) () ands (k) () converge when 0 and . Consequently, the derivatives of each order are bounded in the interval (0, ). We calculate the limiting derivatives explicitly, and establish the surprising result that all higher order derivatives (k 2) converge to zero when .  相似文献

A nonnegative, infinitely differentiable function defined on the real line is called a Friedrichs mollifier function if it has support in [0, 1] and 0 1 (t)dt=1. In this article, the following problem is considered. Determine k =inf 0 1 |(k)(t)|dt,k=1, 2, ..., where (k) denotes thekth derivative of and the infimum is taken over the set of all mollifier functions , which is a convex set. This problem has applications to monotone polynomial approximation as shown by this author elsewhere. The problem is reducible to three equivalent problems, a nonlinear programming problem, a problem on the functions of bounded variation, and an approximation problem involving Tchebycheff polynomials. One of the results of this article shows that k =k!22k–1,k=1, 2, .... The numerical values of the optimal solutions of the three problems are obtained as a function ofk. Some inequalities of independent interest are also derived. This research was supported in part by the National Science Foundation, Grant No. GK-32712.  相似文献

Summary Let be thek-dimensional subspace spanned by the translates (·–2j/k),j=0, 1, ...,k–1, of a continuous, piecewise smooth, complexvalued, 2-periodic function . For a given functionfL 2(–, ), its least squares approximantS kf from can be expressed in terms of an orthonormal basis. Iff is continuous,S kf can be computed via its discrete analogue by fast Fourier transform. The discrete least squares approximant is used to approximate Fourier coefficients, and this complements the works of Gautschi on attenuation factors. Examples of include the space of trigonometric polynomials where is the de la Valleé Poussin kernel, algebraic polynomial splines where is the periodic B-spline, and trigonometric polynomial splines where is the trigonometric B-spline.  相似文献

Summary Given a Markov chain (X n ) n0, random times are studied which are birth times or death times in the sense that the post- and pre- processes are independent given the present (X –1, X ) at time and the conditional post- process (birth times) or the conditional pre- process (death times) is again Markovian. The main result for birth times characterizes all time substitutions through homogeneous random sets with the property that all points in the set are birth times. The main result for death times is the dual of this and appears as the birth time theorem with the direction of time reversed.Part of this work was done while the author was visiting the Department of Mathematics, University of California at San DiegoThe support of The Danish Natural Science Research Council is gratefully acknowledged  相似文献

Let M be the complete module of a purely real algebraic field of degree n 3, let be a lattice in this module, and let F(X) be its form. We use to denote any lattice for which we have = , where is a nondiagonal matrix for which – I . With each lattice we can associate a factorizable formF (X) in a natural manner. We denote the complete set of forms corresponding to the set {} by {F (X)}. It is proved that for any > 0 there exists an > 0 such that for eachF (X) {F } we have |F (X0)| for some integer vector X0 0.Translated from Zapiski Nauchnykh Seminarov Leningradskogo Otdeleniya Matematicheskogo Instituta im. In this paper, we study the asymptotics of the spectrum of the Dirichlet (or Neumann) Laplacian in a bounded open set R n (n 1) with irregular but nonfractal boundary. We give a partial resolution of the Weyl conjecture, i.e. for the counting functionN i ()(i=0 : Dirichlet;i=1 : Neumann), we have got a precise estimate of the remainder term÷ i ()=() –N i () for large, where() is the Weyl term. This implies that for the irregular but nonfractal drum , not only the volume || n is spectral invariant but also the area of boundary || n–1 might be spectral invariant as well.Partially supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Grant of Chinese State Education Committee.  相似文献

Over the past several decades, the optimization over the efficient set has seen a substantial development. The aim of this paper is to provide a state-of-the-art survey of the development. Given p linear criteria c 1x,,cp x and a feasible region X of R n, the linear multicriteria problem is to find a point x of X such that no point x' of X satisfies (c1 x',,cp x')(c1 x,,cp x) and (c1x',,cp x')q (c1 x ,,cp x). Such a point is called an efficient point. The optimization over the efficient set is the maximization of a given function over the set of efficient points. The difficulty of this problem is mainly due to the nonconvexity of this set. The existing algorithms for solving this problem could be classified into several groups such as adjacent vertex search algorithm, nonadjacent vertex search algorithm, branch-and-bound based algorithm, Lagrangian relaxation based algorithm, dual approach and bisection algorithm. In this paper we review a typical algorithm from each group and compare them from the computational point of view.  相似文献

Consider the parametric linear complementarity problem w=Mz+q+p, w0, z0, w T z=0, where p0, 0q0, and 0. We show that a necessary condition for every complementary map z() to be isotone for every nonzero q0 and every p is that M be either a P-matrix or a -matrix. The Cottle necessary and sufficient conditions for strong and uniform isotonicity for P-matrices are restated, with slight modifications, for -matrices.  相似文献

This paper discusses the prediction problems for square-transformed process, Y t = X t 2, where X t is a stationary process with spectral density g(). The square-transformation is important in prediction of the volatility of ARCH models. First, we evaluate the mean square prediction error for square-transformed process when the predictor is constructed from the true spectral density g(). However, it is often that the true structure g() is not completely specified. Hence, we consider the problem of misspecified prediction when a conjectured spectral density f (), , is fitted to g(). Then, constructing the best linear predictor based on f (), we can evaluate the prediction error for square-transformed process. Also, we consider a bias adjusted prediction problem for the above two cases. Furthermore, we may suppose that X t is a non-Gaussian process. Then, we evaluate the mean square prediction errors when the best linear predictor is constructed by the true spectral density g() and the conjectured spectral density f (), respectively. Since is usually unknown we estimate it by a quasi-MLE . The second-order asymptotic approximations of the mean square errors of the predictors based on g() and f () are given. Finally, we provide some numerical examples, which show some unexpected features.  相似文献

We develop a method for extending results about ultrafilters into a more general setting. In this paper we shall be mainly concerned with applications to cardinality logics. For example, assumingV=L, Gödel's Axiom of Constructibility, we prove that if > then the logic with the quantifier there exist many is (,)-compact if and only if either is weakly compact or is singular of cofinality<. As a corollary, for every infinite cardinals and , there exists a (,)-compact non-(,)-compact logic if and only if either < orcf<cf or < is weakly compact.Counterexamples are given showing that the above statements may fail, ifV=L is not assumed. However, without special assumptions, analogous results are obtained for the stronger notion of [,]-compactness.  相似文献
