This paper explores Mechanical Engineering students’ conceptions of and preferences for conceptions of the derivative, and their views on mathematics. Data comes from pre-, post- and delayed post-tests, a preference test, interviews with students and an analysis of calculus courses. Data from Mathematics students is used to make comparisons with Mechanical Engineering students. The results show that Mechanical Engineering students’ conceptions of and preferences for the derivative develop in the direction of the rate of change aspects while those of Mathematics students develop in the direction of tangent aspects, and that Mechanical Engineering students view mathematics as a tool and want the application aspects in their course. Students’ developing conceptions, preferences and views with regard to teaching and departmental affiliation are considered and educational implications are suggested for the mathematical education of engineering students.  相似文献

This research explores how adolescents conceptualize the usefulness of mathematics. Integrating sociocultural theory with the study of utility value, this study uses open-ended survey items and interview tasks to examine conceptions of usefulness among a group of predominantly Latinx middle school students. Findings reveal that students primarily conceptualized the usefulness of mathematics in two ways. First, students considered the applicability of mathematics content, focusing on applications of mathematics in everyday life and future jobs/careers. Second, students considered the usefulness of features of the learning experience, such as the form of interaction and structure of the activity. Both conceptions are compared to existing conceptions of usefulness in the literature, and implications for classroom practice and future research are discussed.  相似文献

Many approaches to make mathematics relevant to first-year engineering students have been described. These include teaching practical engineering applications, or a close collaboration between engineering and mathematics teaching staff on unit design and teaching. In this paper, we report on a novel approach where we gave higher year engineering and multimedia students the task to ‘make maths relevant’ for first-year students. This approach is novel as we moved away from the traditional thinking that staff should produce these resources to students producing the same. These students have more recently undertaken first-year mathematical study themselves and can also provide a more mature student perspective to the task than first-year students. Two final-year engineering students and three final-year multimedia students worked on this project over the Australian summer term and produced two animated videos showing where concepts taught in first-year mathematics are applied by professional engineers. It is this student perspective on how to make mathematics relevant to first-year students that we investigate in this paper. We analyse interviews with higher year students as well as focus groups with first-year students who had been shown the videos in class, with a focus on answering the following three research questions: (1) How would students demonstrate the relevance of mathematics in engineering? (2) What are first-year students' views on the resources produced for them? (3) Who should produce resources to demonstrate the relevance of mathematics? There seemed to be some disagreement between first- and final-year students as to how the importance of mathematics should be demonstrated in a video. We therefore argue that it should ideally be a collaboration between higher year students and first-year students, with advice from lecturers, to produce such resources.  相似文献

In this article I describe the development of a framework for considering students’ conceptions about the sensible nature of mathematics. I begin by using extant literature on conceptions of mathematics to develop a framework of action-oriented indicators that students’ conceive of mathematics as sensible. I then use classroom data to modify and illustrate the framework. The result is a coding framework, grounded in the literature, which can be used to assess the enacted conceptions of mathematics as sensible of a group of students. This work also provides a conceptual framework, grounded in classroom data, of the dimensions of these conceptions.  相似文献

The topic of inhibition in mathematics education is both well timed and important. In this commentary, we reflect on the role of inhibition in mathematics learning through four themes that relate to how inhibition is defined, measured, developed, and applied. First, we consider different characterizations of inhibition and how they may shape the ways that inhibition is conceptualized and studied in mathematics contexts. Second, we discuss methods that researchers use to study inhibition and how differences across these methods may constrain researchers’ conclusions or what these differences may imply for students’ use of inhibition when solving authentic mathematics problems. Third, we consider the relationship between intuition and mathematics content knowledge, including how this relationship may vary for students with different levels of knowledge. We end with a discussion of inhibition’s practical educational relevance, in which we offer a set of questions that may inform future conversations or research in the field.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This study shows that using authentic contexts for learning differential equations in a differentiation-by-interest setting can enhance students’ beliefs about the relevance of mathematics. The students in this study were studying advanced mathematics (wiskunde D) at upper secondary school in the Netherlands. These students are often not aware of the relevance of the mathematics they have to learn in school. More insights into the application of mathematics in other sciences can be beneficial for these students in terms of preparation for their future study and career. A course differentiating by student interest with new context-rich curriculum materials was developed in order to enhance students’ beliefs about the relevance of mathematics. The intervention aimed at teaching differential equations through guided small-group tasks in scientific, medical or economical contexts. The results show that students’ beliefs about the relevance of mathematics improved, and they appreciated experiencing how the mathematics was applied in real-life situations.  相似文献

The study tries to show one line of how the German didactical tradition has evolved in response to new theoretical ideas and new—empirical—research approaches in mathematics education. First, the classical mathematical didactics, notably ‘stoffdidaktik’ as one (besides other) specific German tradition are described. The critiques raised against ‘stoffdidaktik’ concepts [for example, forms of ‘progressive mathematisation’, ‘actively discovering learning processes’ and ‘guided reinvention’ (cf. Freudenthal, Wittmann)] changed the basic views on the roles that ‘mathematical knowledge’, ‘teacher’ and ‘student’ have to play in teaching–learning processes; this conceptual change was supported by empirical studies on the professional knowledge and activities of mathematics teachers [for example, empirical studies of teacher thinking (cf. Bromme)] and of students’ conceptions and misconceptions (for example, psychological research on students’ mathematical thinking). With the interpretative empirical research on everyday mathematical teaching–learning situations (for example, the work of the research group around Bauersfeld) a new research paradigm for mathematics education was constituted: the cultural system of mathematical interaction (for instance, in the classroom) between teacher and students.  相似文献

Adopting a multitiered design-based research perspective, this study examines pre-service secondary mathematics teachers’ developing conceptions about (a) the nature of mathematical modeling in simulations of “real life” problem solving, and (b) pedagogical principles and strategies needed to teach mathematics through modeling. Unlike other studies that have focused on single-topic and lesson-sized research sites, a course-sized research site was used in this study. Having been through several iterations over three teaching semesters, the 15-week long course was implemented with 25 pre-service secondary mathematics teachers. Findings revealed that pre-service teachers developed ideas about the nature of mathematical modeling involving what mathematical modeling is, the relationship between mathematical modeling and meaningful understanding, and the nature of mathematical modeling tasks. They also realized the changing roles of teachers during modeling implementations and diversity in students’ ways of thinking. The researchers’ conceptual development, on the other hand, involved realizing the critical aspect of the “teacher role” played by the instructor during modeling implementations, and the need for more experience of modeling implementations for pre-service teachers.  相似文献

The survey described in this paper was developed in order to gain an understanding of culturally-based aspects of creativity associated with secondary school mathematics across six participating countries. All participating countries acknowledge the importance of creativity in mathematics, yet the data show that they take very different approaches to teaching creatively and enhancing students’ creativity. Approximately 1,100 teachers from six countries (Cyprus, India, Israel, Latvia, Mexico, and Romania) participated in a 100-item questionnaire addressing teachers’ conceptions about: (1) Who is a creative student in mathematics, (2) Who is a creative mathematics teacher, (3) In what way is creativity in mathematics related to culture, and (4) Who is a creative person. We present responses to each conception focusing on differences between teachers from different countries. We also analyze relationships among teachers’ conceptions of creativity and their experience, and educational level. Based on factor analysis of the collected data we discuss relevant relationships among different components of teachers’ conceptions of creativity as they emerge in countries with different cultures.  相似文献

This paper presents a qualitative study on how students make use of their mathematics textbooks for practicing. The study was carried out in two German secondary schools with 74 students (44 in 6th and 30 in 12th grade). Students’ utilization of textbooks for practicing is analyzed using the theoretical framework of instrumental genesis. The results indicate that students’ choices of contents from the book for practicing can be categorized into three utilization schemes: position-dependent practicing, block-dependent practicing, and salience-dependent practicing. In terms of position-dependent practicing the relative position of the textbook’s contents to teacher-mediated sections guides the students’ choice. Block-dependent practicing relates to the use of contents from the book that belong to particular blocks. Finally, salience-dependent practicing is a utilization scheme of the book where students’ choice is guided by perceptual salience of the book contents. These findings both show how textbook users are influenced by the way mathematics is presented in textbooks and provide insights into students’ conceptions of practicing mathematics.  相似文献

A special topics course dealing with perturbation methods in applied mathematics which was recently taught at Stevens Institute of Technology is described. Since the course enrolment was comprised of undergraduate and graduate mathematics students as well as graduate students in engineering, an unusual course philosophy had to be developed and implemented. The approach taken to achieve this in both teaching techniques and selection of subject matter is discussed in detail. Finally, conclusions are drawn from the students’ and the instructor's experiences with the course which hopefully will be of value to those considering offering special topics courses in the future.  相似文献

A study conducted with 25 Year 6 primary school students investigated the potential for a short classroom intervention to begin the development of a Modelling conception of mathematics on the way to developing a sense of mathematics as a way of thinking about life. The study documents the developmental roots of the cognitive activity, actions and conceptions of both modelling and mathematics that these beginners to modelling displayed. Understanding the conceptions of mathematics that students might hold or be developing and how these can be influenced in early schooling are essential ingredients in any plans for introducing modelling seriously into primary school classrooms. The majority of the students (22/25) were identified as displaying a developing conception of modelling as a way of problem handling. The three other students displayed the developmental roots of a way of understanding the world conception of modelling. These three students also displayed a Modelling conception of mathematics with one showing indications of developing towards a Life conception of mathematics.  相似文献

This paper aims to examine key characteristics of exemplary mathematics instruction in Japanese classrooms. The selected findings of large-scale international studies of classroom practices in mathematics are reviewed for discussing the uniqueness of how Japanese teachers structure and deliver their lessons and what Japanese teachers value in their instruction from a teacher’s perspective. Then an analysis of post-lesson video-stimulated interviews with 60 students in three “well-taught” eighth-grade mathematics classrooms in Tokyo is reported to explore the learners’ views on what constitutes a “good” mathematics lesson. The co-constructed nature of quality mathematics instruction that focus on the role of students’ thinking in the classroom is discussed by recasting the characteristics of how lessons are structured and delivered and what experienced teachers tend to value in their instruction from the learner’s perspective. Valuing students’ thinking as necessary elements to be incorporated into the development of a lesson is the key to the approach taken by Japanese teachers to develop and maintain quality mathematics instruction.  相似文献

In this qualitative research study, we sought to understand teachers' conceptions of integrated mathematics. The participants were teachers in the first year of implementation of a state‐mandated, high school integrated mathematics curriculum. The primary data sources for this study included focus group and individual interviews. Through our analysis, we found that the teachers had varied conceptions of what the term integrated meant in reference to mathematics curricula. These varied conceptions led to the development of the Conceptions of Integrated Mathematics Curricula Framework describing the different conceptions of integrated mathematics held by the teachers. The four conceptions—integration by strands, integration by topics, interdisciplinary integration, and contextual integration—refer to the different ideas teachers connect as well as the time frame over which these connections are emphasized. The results indicate that even when teachers use the same integrated mathematics curriculum, they may have varying conceptions of which ideas they are supposed to connect and how these connections can be emphasized. These varied conceptions of integration among teachers may lead students to experience the same adopted curriculum in very different ways.  相似文献

This study investigates the pedagogical skills and knowledge of three tertiary-level mathematics support tutors in a large group classroom setting. This is achieved through the use of video analysis and a theoretical framework comprising Rowland's Knowledge Quartet and general pedagogical knowledge. The study reports on the findings in relation to these tutors’ provision of mathematics support to first and second year undergraduate engineering students and second year undergraduate science students. It was found that tutors are lacking in various pedagogical skills which are needed for high-quality learning amongst service mathematics students (e.g. engineering/science/technology students), a demographic which have low levels of mathematics upon entering university. Tutors teach their support classes in a very fast didactic way with minimal opportunities for students to ask questions or to attempt problems. It was also found that this teaching method is even more so exaggerated in mandatory departmental mathematics tutorials that students take as part of their mathematics studies at tertiary level. The implications of the findings on mathematics tutor training at tertiary level are also discussed.  相似文献

Researchers have argued that covariational reasoning is foundational for learning a variety of mathematics topics. We extend prior research by examining two students’ covariational reasoning with attention to the extent they became consciously aware of the parametric nature of their reasoning. We first describe our theoretical background including different conceptions of covariation researchers have found useful when characterizing student reasoning. We then present two students’ activities during a teaching experiment in which they constructed and reasoned about covarying quantities. We highlight aspects of the students’ reasoning that we conjectured created an intellectual need that resulted in their constructing a parameter quantity or attribute, a need we explored in closing teaching episodes. We discuss implications of these results for perspectives on covariational reasoning, students’ understandings of graphs and parametric functions, and areas of future research.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This article focuses on the theoretical-methodological question of how to identify reform-induced changes in school mathematics. The issue arose in our project The Evolution of the Discourse of School Mathematics (EDSM), in which we studied transformations in high-stakes examinations taken by students in England at the end of compulsory schooling. We have adopted a conceptualisation that draws on social semiotics and on a communicational approach, according to which school mathematics can be thought of as a discourse. Methods of comparing examinations of different years developed on the basis of this definition enable identification of subtle disparities that are nevertheless significant enough to make an important difference in students’ vision of mathematics, in their performance and, eventually, in their ability to cope with problems that can benefit from the use of mathematics. In this article, we present these methods and argue that they have wider application for comparative studies of school mathematics.  相似文献

Prior research has established that teachers' use of curriculum materials is affected by a range of factors, such as teachers' conceptions of mathematics teaching, and the nature and extent of their teaching experience. What is less clear, and far less examined, in prior research is the role that the teacher guide (TG) may play in mediating the influence of these and other factors on teachers' decisions and actions. Accordingly, this study examines how two 6th grade teachers use the TG from Connected Mathematics Project as a resource in making planning and enactment decisions, and factors associated with patterns of TG use. Through cross‐case analysis, the author found that these teachers seemed to draw largely from their previous experiences and their own conceptions of mathematics teaching and learning when making planning and enactment decisions related to mathematical tasks, and not particularly from the TG. For example, when faced with certain planning and instructional challenges, such as students struggling with the content, teachers tended to rely on their particular conceptions of mathematics teaching to address these challenges. Despite the fact that the TG provided suggestions for teachers as to how address such challenges, it was not extensively used as a resource by the teachers in this study in their planning and enactment of lessons.  相似文献
