The tribology of surfaces modified with doubly bound polymer chains (loops) has been investigated in good solvent conditions using Langevin dynamics simulations. The density profiles, brush interpenetration, chain inclination, normal forces, and shear forces for two flat substrates modified by doubly bound bead-necklace polymers and equivalent singly bound polymers (twice as many polymer chains of 12 the molecular weight of the loop chains) were determined and compared as a function of surface separation, grafting density, and shear velocity. The doubly bound polymer layers showed less interpenetration with decreasing separation than the equivalent singly bound layers. Surprisingly, this difference in interpenetration between doubly bound polymer and singly bound polymer did not result in decreased friction at high shear velocity possibly due to the decreased ability of the doubly bound chains to deform in response to the applied shear. However, at lower shear velocity, where deformation of the chains in the flow direction is less pronounced and the difference in interpenetration is greater between the doubly bound and singly bound chains, some reduction in friction was observed.  相似文献

In order to investigate the validity of the dissipative particle dynamics method, which is a mesoscopic simulation technique, we have derived an expression for viscosity from the equation of motion of dissipative particles. In the concrete, we have shown the Fokker-Planck equation in phase space, and macroscopic conservation equations such as the equation of continuity and the equation of momentum conservation. The basic equations of the single-particle and pair distribution functions have been derived using the Fokker-Planck equation. The solutions of these distribution functions have approximately been solved by the perturbation method under the assumption of molecular chaos. The expressions of the viscosity due to momentum and dissipative forces have been obtained using the approximate solutions of the distribution functions. Also, we have conducted nonequilibrium dynamics simulations to investigate the influence of the parameters, which have appeared in defining the equation of motion in the dissipative particle dynamics method. The theoretical values of the viscosity due to dissipative forces in the Hoogerbrugge-Koelman theory are in good agreement with the simulation results obtained by the nonequilibrium dynamics method, except in the range of small number densities. There are restriction conditions for taking appropriate values of the number density, number of particles, time interval, shear rate, etc., to obtain physically reasonable results by means of dissipative particle dynamics simulations.  相似文献

By means of dynamic Monte Carlo simulation of bulk lattice polymers in Couette shear flow, it was demonstrated that in addition to velocity gradient the constant driving forces acting as the activation aspect of shear stresses can also raise polymer deformation. Moreover, enhancing driving forces in a flow without any velocity gradient can reproduce nonNewtonian fluid behaviors of long-chain polymers. The simulations of Poiseuille shear flow with a gradient of shear stresses show that, the velocity gradient dominates small deformation in the flow layers of low shear stresses, while the shear stress dominates large deformation in the flow layers of high shear stresses. This result implies that the stress-induced deformation could be mainly responsible for the occurrence of non-Newtonian fluid behaviors of real polymers at high shear rates.  相似文献

A numerical solution of the Leslie-Ericksen equations for nematic liquid crystals is obtained for in-plane rotation of a strong magnetic field. A transient periodic orientation develops as a result of in-plane director motion and the induced shear flow. At long times the in-plane director orientation results in steady splay-bend inversion walls. A linear stability analysis shows that the inversion walls are unstable to perturbations out of the plane for elastic coefficients characteristic of nematic polymers. Calculations of transmitted light intensity through crossed polarizers for the computed orientation development predict the evolution of a banded texture, as observed experimentally.  相似文献

Electroosmotic flow of power-law fluids in a slit channel is analyzed. The governing equations including the linearized Poisson-Boltzmann equation, the Cauchy momentum equation, and the continuity equation are solved to seek analytical expressions for the shear stress, dynamic viscosity, and velocity distribution. Specifically, exact solutions of the velocity distributions are explicitly found for several special values of the flow behavior index. Furthermore, with the implementation of an approximate scheme for the hyperbolic cosine function, approximate solutions of the velocity distributions are obtained. In addition, a generalized Smoluchowski velocity is introduced by taking into account contributions due to the finite thickness of the electric double layer and the flow behavior index of power-law fluids. Calculations are performed to examine the effects of kappaH, flow behavior index, double layer thickness, and applied electric field on the shear stress, dynamic viscosity, velocity distribution, and average velocity/flow rate of the electroosmotic flow of power-law fluids.  相似文献

Polyelectrolyte brushes were built on mica by anchoring polystyrene-poly(acrylic acid) (PS-b-PAA) diblock copolymers at a controlled surface density in a polystyrene monolayer covalently attached to OH-activated mica surfaces. Compared to physisorbed polymer brushes, these irreversibly attached charged brushes allow the polymer grafting density to remain constant upon changes in environmental conditions (e.g., pH, salt concentration, compression, and shear). The normal interaction and friction forces as a function of surface separation distance and at different concentrations of added salt (NaCl) were investigated using a surface forces apparatus. The interaction force profiles were completely reversible both on loading and receding and were purely repulsive. For a constant polymer grafting density, the influence of the polyelectrolyte charges and the Debye screening effect on the overall interaction forces was investigated. The experimental interaction force profiles agree very well with scaling models developed for neutral and charged polymer brushes. The variation of the friction force between two PAA brushes in motion with respect to each other as a function of surface separation distance appeared to be similar to that observed with neutral brushes. This similarity suggests that the increase in friction is associated with an increase in mutual interpenetration upon compression as observed with neutral polymers. The effect of the PAA charges and added ions was more significant on the repulsive normal forces than on the friction forces. The reversible characteristics of the normal force profiles and friction measurements confirmed the strong attachment of the PAA brushes to the mica substrate. High friction coefficients (ca 0.3) were measured at relatively high pressures (40 atm) with no surface damage or polymer removal.  相似文献

The large amplitude oscillatory shear (LAOS) behavior of a high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe resin containing 2% carbon black has been measured with a sliding plate rheometer incorporating a shear stress transducer. We have evaluated a structural network theory recently proposed by De Kee and Chan Man Fong for suspensions, in LAOS. This model provides for the creation of junctions due to an imposed flow field, and has been proposed as a generalization of the Liu kinetic rate equation, to model the complex behavior of suspensions. A new model, also based on the transient network concept, is proposed for filled polymer melts, and has the desirable feature of separating the effects of the filler material from the entanglement kinetics of the pure polymer. Both models are able to fit the steady shear viscosity data measured for this material. We find that both models are capable of predicting the LAOS behavior of this material, except for severe conditions.  相似文献

The viscosity of linear polymers obeys the logarithmic additivity rule. This is associated with the fact that the activation energy of the viscous flow within certain limits of parameters changes does not depend on temperature, stress, molecular weight, and content of active filler. The mechanism of viscous flow of linear polymers is associated with the reversible destruction of an unstable supramolecular structure typical of the polymers in the state of viscous flow. The effect of shear stress on the viscosity of linear polymers does not obey the Eyring equation. It is supposed that the effect of shear stress on viscosity is associated with the peculiar mechanism of the destruction of the supramolecular structure. At higher rates of viscous flow of the polymer, the activation energy can decrease as a result of the deep destruction of the supramolecular structure. This is a reversible process, as after removal of stress the supramolecular structure slowly reverts to its original state.  相似文献

We have investigated the orientational distributions and rheological properties of dilute colloidal dispersions, which consist of ferromagnetic spherocylinder particles. First, the governing equation of the orientational distribution function has been derived for the typical two cases of magnetic field directions: the direction parallel to the shear flow and the direction parallel to the angular velocity vector of the shear flow. The equation has been solved approximately by Galerkin's method. With these numerical solutions we have obtained the results of the orientational distribution and viscosity. The results obtained for the magnetic field in the shear flow direction are summarized as follows. In the case of a weak magnetic field, the particle tends to orient nearly toward the shear flow direction and its opposite direction. As the magnetic field increases, the orientation of the particle is restricted and the viscosity increases significantly. As the influence of the magnetic field becomes dominant, an overshoot in the viscosity curve appears. This is due to the fact that there is a maximum deviation of the averaged particle direction from the magnetic field direction. When the strength of the magnetic field increases significantly, the particle inclines close to the magnetic field direction and the viscosity converges to a constant value. Particles with a larger aspect ratio give rise to a larger increment in the viscosity since such elongated particles induce larger resistance in a flow field. We also have obtained results for the case of the magnetic field in the direction parallel to the angular velocity vector of the shear flow. When the flow field is dominant over both the rotational Brownian motion and the magnetic interaction, the particle rotates in the plane nearly perpendicular to the magnetic field direction. As the magnetic field increases, the particle inclines toward the magnetic direction. For this direction of field, the viscosity is independent of the magnetic field and is always zero.  相似文献

We calculate the flow within and around a porous spherical agglomerate suspended in the general linear flow field, and also the flow induced by its rotation. We use the Stokes equations exterior to the particle and the Brinkman equations inside it. The effect of particle permeability on the flow is expressed via the Brinkman parameter beta = r(0)/square root of k, where r0 is particle radius and k is its permeability. With translational creeping motion of porous spheres in a quiet fluid investigated by Debye and Bueche [P. Debye, A.M. Bueche, J. Chem. Phys. 16 (6) (1943) 573-579], this study provides information necessary for investigating dynamics of porous particles moving in creeping shear flows under the action of external forces and torques. The agglomerate flow field solutions are used to calculate the effective viscosity of a dilute suspension of porous solid aggregates, which generalizes the well-known Einstein's equation for solid suspensions. The agglomerate effective viscosity diameter is proposed which allows using the Einstein's formula evaluation of the agglomerates suspension viscosity.  相似文献

Experiments and simulations on single α-actin filaments in the Poiseuille flow through a microchannel show that the center-of-mass probability density across the channel assumes a bimodal shape as a result of pronounced cross-streamline migration. We reexamine the problem and perform Brownian dynamics simulations for a bead-spring chain with bending elasticity. Hydrodynamic interactions between the pointlike beads are taken into account by the two-wall Green tensor of the Stokes equations. Our simulations reproduce the bimodal distribution only when hydrodynamic interactions are taken into account. Numerical results on the orientational order of the end-to-end vector of the model polymer are also presented together with analytical hard-needle expressions at zero flow velocity. We derive a Smoluchowski equation for the center-of-mass distribution and carefully analyze the different contributions to the probability current that causes the bimodal distribution. As for flexible polymers, hydrodynamic repulsion explains the depletion at the wall. However, in contrast to flexible polymers, the deterministic drift current mainly determines migration away from the centerline and thereby depletion at the center. Diffusional currents due to a position-dependent diffusivity become less important with increasing polymer stiffness.  相似文献

Molecular simulations (Dissipative Particle Dynamics - DPD) were used to quantify the effect of polymer adsorption on the effective shear viscosity of a semi-dilute polymer solution in microchannel Poseuille flow. It is well known that polymer depletion layers develop adjacent to solid walls due to hydrodynamic forces, causing an apparent wall slip and reduced effective viscosity (increased total flow rate). We found that depletion layers also developed in the presence of hydrodynamically rough adsorbed layers on the wall. Polymer-polymer (steric) repulsion between flowing and adsorbed polymer expanded the depletion layer compared to no-adsorption cases, and the effective viscosity was reduced further. Desorption occurred for higher shear rates, reducing the repulsion effect and shrinking the depletion layers. A phenomenological algebraic model for the depletion layer thickness, including a shear modified adsorption isotherm, was developed based on the simulation data. The depletion layer model can be used together with the effective viscosity model we developed earlier.  相似文献

Nonequilibrium molecular-dynamics simulations are performed for linear and branched chain molecules to study their rheological and structural properties under simple shear and Poiseuille flows. Molecules are described by a spring-monomer model with a given intermolecular potential. The equations of motion are solved for shear and Poiseuille flows with Lees and Edward's [A. W. Lees and S. F. Edwards, J. Phys. C 5, 1921 (1972)] periodic boundary conditions. A multiple time-scale algorithm extended to nonequilibrium situations is used as the integration method, and the simulations are performed at constant temperature using Nose-Hoover [S. Nose, J. Chem. Phys. 81, 511 (1984)] dynamics. In simple shear, molecules with flow-induced ellipsoidal shape, having significant segment concentrations along the gradient and neutral directions, exhibit substantial flow resistance. Linear molecules have larger zero-shear-rate viscosity than that of branched molecules, however, this behavior reverses as the shear rate is increased. The relaxation time of the molecules is associated with segment concentrations directed along the gradient and neutral directions, and hence it depends on structure and molecular weight. The results of this study are in qualitative agreement with other simulation studies and with experimental data. The pressure (Poiseuille) flow is induced by an external force F(e) simulated by confining the molecules in the region between surfaces which have attractive forces. Conditions at the boundary strongly influence the type of the slip flow predicted. A parabolic velocity profile with apparent slip on the wall is predicted under weakly attractive wall conditions, independent of molecular structure. In the case of strongly attractive walls, a layer of adhered molecules to the wall produces an abrupt distortion of the velocity profile which leads to slip between fluid layers with magnitude that depends on the molecular structure. Finally, the molecular deformation under flow depends on the attractive force of the wall, in such a way that molecules are highly deformed in the case of strong attracting walls.  相似文献

The focused beam reflectance measurement (FBRM), also known as scanning laser microscopy (SLM), was used as a real-time monitor to study the flocculation and reflocculation of clay suspensions under different shear conditions in the presence of single polymer, dual polymer, microparticle and poly(ethylene oxide)/phenolformaldehyde (PEO/PFR) flocculation systems. For initial flocculation, the high molecular weight PEO and cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) produced larger flocs than others. However, reflocculation of clay suspensions formed by these non- or low-charged polymers was insignificant after the initial flocs were broken under high shear force. In contrast, high charge density polymers, such as poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC), do not form large initial flocs, but they showed significant reflocculation ability under a continuous shear condition. It is concluded that high flocculation can be obtained by effective polymer bridging, but high reflocculation can only be induced by high electrostatic attractive forces between suspended particles.  相似文献

Interactions between a high molecular weight poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) in aqueous solutions were investigated by shear and extensional rheometry. Results for mixtures between PEO and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) are also presented for comparison purposes. Addition of anionic surfactants to PEO solutions above the critical aggregation concentration (CAC), at which micellar aggregates attach to the polymer chain, results in an increase in shear viscosity due to PEO coil expansion, and a strengthening of interchain interactions. In extensional flows, these interactions result in a decrease of the critical shear rate for the onset of the characteristic extension thickening of the PEO solutions that is due to transient entanglements of polymer molecules. The relaxation times associated with these transient entanglements are not directly proportional to the shear viscosity of the solutions, but rather vary more rapidly with surfactant concentration. In the presence of an electrolyte, coil contraction results in lower shear viscosities and a decrease in the extension thickening effects at surfactant concentrations just beyond the CAC. The relaxation times associated with transient entanglement reach a minimum at the same surfactant concentration as the shear viscosity, which indicates that coil contraction is responsible for the observed effects in both types of flow. However, the increase in extensional-flow entanglement relaxation times is much more abrupt than the decrease in shear viscosity. All these results point to a greater sensitivity of extensional flows on the molecular conformation of PEO/surfactant complexes.  相似文献

Adiabatic compressibilities of aqueous solutions of some drag reducing polymers have been evaluated from ultrasonic velocity and density measurements. The solvation numbers of the repeat units of the polymers have been further evaluated by using Passynsky equation. It is observed that the solvation number increases with the shear stability of drag reducing polymers in turbulent flow.  相似文献

We have investigated the influence of the magnetic field strength, shear rate, and rotational Brownian motion on transport coefficients such as viscosity and diffusion coefficient, and also on the orientational distributions of rodlike particles of a dilute colloidal dispersion. The rodlike particle is modeled as a magnetic spheroidal particle which has a magnetic moment normal to the particle axis; such a particle may typically be a hematite particle. In the present study, an external magnetic field is applied in the direction normal to the shear plane of a simple shear flow. The basic equation of the orientational distribution function has been derived from the balance of torques and solved numerically. The results obtained here are summarized as follows. Although the orientational distribution function shows a sharp peak in the shear flow direction for a very strong magnetic field, such a peak is not restricted to the field direction alone, but continues in every direction of the shear plane. This is due to the characteristic particle motion that the particle can rotate around the axis of the magnetic moment in the shear plane, although the magnetic moment nearly points to the magnetic field direction. This particle motion in the shear plane causes negative values of the viscosity due to the magnetic field. The viscosity decreases, attains a minimum value, and then converges to zero as the field strength increases. Additionally, the diffusion coefficient is significantly influenced by such characteristic particle motion in the shear plane for a strong magnetic field.  相似文献
