The adsorption of sodium dodecyl sulfate to colloidal titanium dioxide was investigated using the electrophoretic fingerprinting approach. An electrophoretic fingerprint is a contour diagram of the observed electrophoretic mobility as a function of the bulk solution pH and plambda, the log of the bulk solution conductivity. Surfactant adsorption was observed to be strong under acidic conditions, as illustrated in the dramatic changes in the electrophoretic fingerprints. Electrokinetic data were compared with adsorption isotherm data obtained by a depletion method and good qualitative agreement was found. The observed pH changes associated with surfactant adsorption suggested ligand exchange as a possible mechanism of adsorption. Electrophoretic fingerprinting was shown to be a powerful means of examining surfactant adsorption to colloidal particles. Copyright 2000 Academic Press.  相似文献

The electrophoretic mobility and temperature-dependent particle size of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNiPAM) microgels after alternating adsorption of poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) and poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) have been determined. First a PNiPAM-co-acrylic acid (AAc) shell was added to the PNiPAM microgel, then PDADMAC and PSS were adsorbed alternately. The studies of the electrophoretic mobility revealed charge reversal when a polyelectrolyte (PE) layer was adsorbed. Particle size measurements revealed a strong influence of polyelectrolyte adsorption on the temperature-dependent particle swelling. The strong influence of the adsorbed polyelectrolyte on the particle size is in contrast to polyelectrolyte multilayer adsorption on rigid particles.  相似文献

Various amino acid derivatives of monascus pigments were synthesized. The effects of pigment derivatives on the pigment adsorption ratio, electrophoretic mobility (EPM) of bacterial cells, and antibacterial activity were investigated under varying conditions of pigment type, pigment concentration, pH, and ionic strength. Two hydrophobic and two hydrophilic derivatives were selected as model pigments. There was a close relationship between the antimicrobial activity and the pigment adsorption ratio. Against Escherichia coli, the hydrophobic l-Tyr and l-Phe derivatives (log P = 3.18 and 3.57) exhibited high antimicrobial activities (MIC = 8 and 16 mg/L) and high cellular adsorption ratios (9.6 and 10.9 mg/L). The hydrophilic l-Glu and l-Asn derivatives (log P = 1.40 and 0.47) exhibited low activities (MIC = 64 and 128 mg/L) and low adsorption ratios (4.7 and 4.0 mg/L). The electrophoretic mobility of 11 different bacteria varied between −1.93 × 10−8 and −1.19 × 10−8 m2 V−1 s−1 regardless of Gram+ or Gram. The l-Phe derivative showed low MIC values (high antimicrobial activities) against bacteria with a high electrophoretic mobility. A positive linearity between the pigment adsorption ratio and the electrophoretic mobility was established. When the four pigment derivatives were added to E. coli solutions, the electrophoretic mobility of cells in all cases sharply increased with an increasing pigment concentration. The mobility value was high for hydrophobic pigment derivatives in descending order of l-Phe (0.8 × 10−8 m2 V−1 s−1), l-Tyr (0.68 × 10−8 m2 V−1 s−1), l-Glu (0.46 × 10−8 m2 V−1 s−1), and l-Asn (0.44 × 10−8 m2 V−1 s−1). Additional adsorption of the hydrophobic derivatives probably occurred due to a hydrophobic interaction between the pigment and the pigment-coated cells. The electrophoretic mobility decreased gradually with an increasing pH and/or ionic strength with both addition and no addition of the pigment derivatives. The pattern of change of the pigment adsorption ratio under varying pH and/or ionic strength values was similar to the pattern for electrophoretic mobility.  相似文献

Understanding the adsorption of polymers onto particles is crucial for many technological and biomedical applications. Even though polymer adsorption on particles is a dynamic process, most experimental techniques can only study the adsorption indirectly, in equilibrium and on the ensemble level. New analysis methods are required to overcome these limitations. We investigated the use of single-particle electrophoresis to study the adsorption kinetics of cationic polymers onto anionic particles and compared the resulting data to a theoretical model. In this approach, the electrophoretic mobility of single polystyrene (PS) particles, exposed to different concentrations of poly(2-guanidinoethyl methacrylate), was measured as a function of time. The polymer adsorption leads to an electrophoretic mobility change of the PS particle over time, from the initial negative value to a positive value at equilibrium. By fitting the kinetics data to the Langmuir model, the adsorption rate, desorption rate and equilibrium constant were determined. Finally, the adsorption kinetics of several other polymers was investigated. This showed that the presented technique enables direct analysis and comparison of the kinetics of polymer adsorption on the single-particle level.  相似文献

根据电泳与电导的测量得出,聚苯乙烯胶乳质点的ξ电势随电解质浓度增加而变大,主要是质点表面基团与溶液间离子交换的结果。根据Langmuir吸附公式与Stern双电层模型,由电泳数据求出了表面活性阳离子在聚苯乙烯胶乳上的吸附自由能与吸附位数。增大电解质浓度使质点表面吸附位数增加,表面活性阳离子的吸附量也因此变大。  相似文献

An experimental study on the electrophoretic mobility (μe) of polystyrene particles after the adsorption of non-ionic surfactants with different chain lengths is described. Two sulphate latexes with relatively low surface charge densities (3.2 and 4.8 μC cm−2) were used as solid substrate for the adsorption of four non-ionic surfactants, Triton X-100, Triton X-165, Triton X-305 and Triton X-405, each one with 9–10, 16, 30 and 40 molecules of ethylene oxide (EO), respectively. The electrophoretic mobility of the polystyrene–non-ionic surfactant complexes was studied versus the amount of adsorbed surfactant (Γ). The presence of non-ionic surfactant onto particles surface seems to produce a slight shifting of the slipping plane because the mobilities of the different complexes display a very small decreasing. The increase in the number of EO chains in the surfactant molecule seems to operate as a steric impediment which decreases the number of adsorbed large surfactant molecules. The electrophoretic mobilities of the latex–surfactant complexes with maximum adsorption were measured versus the pH and ionic strength of the dispersion. While the different complexes showed a similar qualitative behaviour compared with that of the bare latex against the pH, the adsorption of the surfactant reduces the typical maximum in the μe−log[electrolyte].  相似文献

An experimental study on the electrophoretic mobility (µe) of polystyrene particles after adsorption of Triton X-100 (TX100) is described. Three polystyrene particles with different functionality (sulphate, carboxyl and amidine) were used as solid substrate for the adsorption of the surfactant. The electrophoretic mobility of the polystyrene-TX100 complexes at different electrolyte concentrations has been studied versus the amount of adsorbed surfactant. The presence of TX100 onto the colloidal particles seems to produce a slight shifting of the slipping plane. This is observed for electrolyte concentrations above ~10-3 M. On the other hand, the electrophoretic mobilities of the latex-surfactant complexes with maximum surface coverage were measured versus pH and salt concentration. Specific ion interactions between H+/carboxyl groups and OH-/amidine groups appeared at extreme pH which explain the anomalous electrophoretic behaviour encountered in the region where surface charge change.  相似文献

The adsorption of ethyl and amyl xanthate ions on galena and sphalerite fines has been studied using electrophoretic light-scattering (ELS) measurements. It was performed on galena and sphalerite (<2&mgr;m) in aqueous solution at different potassium ethyl xanthate (PEX) and potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) concentrations. It has been observed that the presence of PEX or PAX caused the isoelectric points (IEP) of galena and sphalerite fines to shift and the electrophoretic mobility to reverse in sign, indicating that the xanthate ions chemisorbed on galena and sphalerite surfaces. This adsorption markedly broadened the electrophoretic mobility distribution of the mineral fines, suggesting that the populations of the particles have quite different adsorption densities of xanthate ions, and therefore the particle hydrophobicity was different. This phenomenon might be attributable to the effect of the hemimicelle adsorption of the xanthate ions on the minerals, the nonuniform distribution of active sites and their degree of activity, the effect of particle size and shape, etc. The nonuniform adsorption has been found to increase with increasing PEX or PAX concentration, reaching a maximum at a medium concentration followed by a decline. Also, experimental results have demonstrated that the nonuniform adsorption of the xanthate ions is much stronger on sphalerite than on galena, which may explain why sphalerite has a worse flotation response than galena when alkyl xanthates are used as collectors in flotation systems. The electrophoretic behaviors of five bases and corresponding nucleosides in the oil in water (o/w) microemulsion capillary electrophoresis, microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography (MEEKC), were examined in comparison with those in normal capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE). The microemulsion systems were composed of heptane, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), 1-butanol and 10 mM phosphate buffer (pH 7.0) or toluene, SDS, 1-butanol and 5 mM carbonate buffer (pH 10.0). CZE was carried out in the range of pH 9.7-10.9, and the dissociation constants, pKa, of the bases and nucleosides and the electrophoretic mobilities of the anionic forms were determined. The electrophoretic behaviors of the solutes in the microemulsion systems were analyzed from their pKa, the electrophoretic mobilities of the anions determined by CZE, and the distribution constants, K(D), of the neutral forms between the microemulsion droplets and the outer aqueous phase. The importance of adsorption mechanism in MEEKC system was suggested from the correlation between log K(D) and log P.  相似文献

The objective of this study is to gain an understanding of the kinetics of adsorption of complexes formed in aqueous solution by oppositely charged polyelectrolytes. The properties of the complexes were characterized by means of dynamic light scattering and electrophoretic mobility and the reaction stoichiometry was studied by titration. The stoichiometry in the complexes depends on the polymer weight ratio w(p). Their point of zero charge (pzc) is shifted toward lower w(p) when simple cations of higher valence are added to the solution. The adsorption kinetics of the complexes on silica was studied by stagnation point reflectometry. The sign of charge of the complexes as well as the valence and concentration of simple cations governs the occurrence of adsorption in the electrolytes studied. Five different types of adsorption kinetics were found. Copyright 2001 Academic Press.  相似文献

The adsorption properties and surface charge creation for the stearic acid and octadecane/aqueous electrolyte solutions are considered. The hairy structure of surface charge for these systems was confirmed on the basis of potentiometric titration, ion adsorption and electrophoretic measurement data. For the system with stearic acid the reaction of ionization and complexation of carboxyl groups of stearic acid molecules from subsurface layer are responsible for the creation of surface charge and adsorption properties. The surface charge at octadecane particle is probably the results in adsorption and orientation of water molecules at the interface.  相似文献

Surface-charging behavior of Zn-Cr layered double hydroxide   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A Zn-Cr layered double hydroxide (LDH) having the formula Zn(2)Cr(OH)(6)Cl(0.7)(CO(3))(0.15)2.1H(2)O was synthesized and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, acid-base potentiometric titration, mass titration, electrophoretic mobility, and modeling of the electrical double layer. Adsorption of alizarin was also performed in order to show some particular features of the HDL. Net hydroxyl adsorption, which increases with increasing pH and decreasing supporting electrolyte concentration, takes place above pH 5. The electrophoretic mobility of the particles was always positive and it decreased when the pH was higher than 9. An isoelectric point of 12 could be estimated by extrapolating the data. The modified MUSIC model was used to estimate deprotonation constants of surface groups and different adsorption models were compared. Good fit of hydroxyl adsorption and electrophoresis could be achieved by considering both OH(-)/Cl(-) exchange at structural sites and proton desorption from surface hydroxyl groups. The modeling, in agreement with alizarin adsorption, indicates that most of the structural positive charge of the LDH is screened at the surface by exchanged anions and negatively charged surface groups. It also suggests that only structural charge sites initially neutralized by chloride ions are active for anion exchange. The remaining sites are blocked by carbonate and do not participate in the exchange.  相似文献

The adsorption of human serum albumin (HSA) onto colloidal TiO2 (P25 Degussa) particles was studied in NaCl electrolyte at different solution pH and ionic strength. The HSA-TiO2 interactions were studied using adsorption isotherms and the electrokinetic properties of HSA-covered TiO2 particles were monitored by electrophoretic mobility measurements. The adsorption behavior shows a remarkable dependence of the maximum coverage degree on pH and was almost independent of the ionic strength. Other characteristic features such as maximum adsorption values at the protein isoelectric point (IEP approximately 4.7) and low-affinity isotherms that showed surface saturation even under unfavorable electrostatic conditions (at pH values far away from the HSA IEP and TiO2 PZC) were observed. Structural and electrostatic effects can explain the diminution of HSA adsorption under these conditions, assuming that protein molecules behave as soft particles. Adsorption reactions are discussed, taking into account acid-base functional groups of the protein and the surface oxide in different pH ranges, considering various types of interactions.  相似文献

Summary Capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) was applied to the characterization of the transmembrane serine receptor in biosynthetic samples. The serine receptor, otherwise known as Tsr (taxis to serine and repellents), is a ∼ 60,000 Dalton intrinsic membrane protein whose periplasmic domain (ligand binding domain) reversibly binds the amino acid serine. In general, the electrophoresis of intrinsic membrane proteins is difficult due to severe solubility problems and adsorption which occurs during the electrophoretic run. This is due to the tendency of these types of proteins to undergo aggregation, self-aggregation and precipitation in aqueous environments. The addition of percentage levels of the surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), to a tetraborate run buffer was shown to be effective both in enhancing the solubility of intact Tsr and in preventing the adsorption of intact Tsr to the fused-silica capillary wall during electrophoretic analysis. Critical separation parameters such as run buffer concentration, surfactant concentration and surfactant type were optimized to give the best separation profiles.  相似文献

Potential drops at the boundary of the bilayer lipid membrane (BLM) due to amphiphilic anion (dodecylsulfate) adsorption have been investigated. The magnitude of these drops was determined by different experimental methods: inner field compensation (IFC), electrophoretic mobility and current relaxation (tetraphenylboron and dipicrylamine were taken as probe anions). The boundary potential (BP) drops (IFC method) do not depend on the electrolyte concentration for neutral membranes. The ζ-potential values in the same conditions are considerably smaller than the BP drops measured by the IFC method. The potential drops, determined with the help of the initial BLM conductivity changes (current relaxation method) coincide with the BP drops (IFC method). The adsorption of amphiphilic ions leads to a decrease in the rate constant of the movement of hydrophobic ions through the BLM (current relaxation method). To explain the results obtained, it is suggested that a potential drop due to amphiphilic ion adsorption is located not only in the diffuse double layer, but also in a layer inside the membrane. The latter is not screened by electrolyte solution ions and could not be registered by the electrophoretic method.  相似文献

Apparent surface coverage (ASC) of a series of tungsten-alumina catalysts was determined by the electrophoretic migration method (EM). A linear increase in W coverage with increasing W loading (up to 13.1 wt.% W) was observed. The results were in close agreement with those obtained previously by ion scattering spectroscopy (ISS) and low temperature CO adsorption.  相似文献

Adsorption of protein from saliva on hydroxyapatite was compared with adsorption of several typical proteins with different electric charges, i.e. lysozyme, human serum albumin, β-lactoglobulin and ovalbumin. Adsorbed amounts of these proteins were determined and electrophoretic mobilities of protein-covered hydroxyapatite particles were measured, at different values for the adsorbed mass and, therefore, at various degrees of surface coverage. Also, adsorption kinetics were investigated by streaming potential measurements of a hydroxyapatite surface in contact with a protein solution, allowing monitoring of changes in the zeta-potential of the protein-covered hydroxyapatite surface in real time. The adsorbed amounts show that, as compared to most of the other proteins, the saliva proteins have remarkably low adsorption affinity. The measured values for the electrophoretic mobilities indicate that the positively charged proteins in the saliva mixture preferentially adsorb onto the negatively charged hydroxyapatite surface; this is most pronounced at low protein concentration in solution (i.e. at low coverage of the surface by the protein). Preferential uptake of the positively charged saliva proteins during the initial stages of the adsorption process is also concluded from the results of the kinetics experiments. Preferential adsorption of positive proteins is somewhat suppressed by the presence of Ca2+ ions in the medium. The results suggest that an acquired pellicle on a tooth in an oral environment contains a significant fraction of positively charged proteins. The positively charged proteins in the pellicle reduce the zeta-potential at the tooth surface to low values; consequently, electrostatic forces are expected to play only a minor role in the interaction with other components (e.g. bacterial cells).  相似文献

The adsorption of Pb(II) onto hydrous sandy loam soil was investigated with batch equilibrium adsorption experiments. Results show that the amount of Pb(II) adsorbed increases with increasing pH and surface loading. It was demonstrated that the surface acidity of the soil could be determined using electrophoretic mobility measurements. The surface acidity constants, pK(a1)(int) and pK(a2)(int), were 1.57 and 3.43, respectively. A surface complex formation model (SCFM) was employed to describe the adsorption. The intrinsic stability constants, pK(i)(s), for the surface reaction between the Pb species and the ionized soil surface hydroxyl groups were determined from SCFM fitting. The adsorption free energy of Pb2+ and Pb(OH)+ ions ranges from -5.74 to -6.48 kcal/mol and from -9.68 to -10.00 kcal/mol, respectively, for surface loadings between 1.21 x 10(-5) and 2.41 x 10(-4) mol/g. The adsorption binding calculation indicated that the specific chemical interaction is the major mechanism responsible for the adsorption process.  相似文献
