In this paper we discuss the direct isotropic to chiral smectic-C phase transition on the basis of a phenomenological theory. The model free energy is written in terms of the coupled order parameters including the spontaneous polarization. We present a detailed analysis of the different phases that can occur and analyze the question under which conditions a direct isotropic to chiral smectic-C phase transition is possible when compared to other phase transitions. On the basis of this model the isotropic-smectic-C* transition is always of first order. The theoretical predictions are compared with the available experimental results.-1  相似文献

We have experimentally studied for the first time the electro-optical Kerr effect and the pre-transitional behavior in the isotropic phase of two antiferroelectric liquid crystal mixtures, W-232 and W-204D, composed of rod-like ester molecules exhibiting the direct smectic-A to isotropic (SmA-I) phase transition. The Kerr law has been confirmed for the two compounds and the variation of inverse Kerr constant with temperature above the smectic–isotropic transition temperatures were determined. Both the mixtures with very broad antiferroelectric phase around room temperature have similar sequence of the phases (i.e., Cr-SmC*A-SmC*-SmA-I). Although, the pre-transitional behavior is usually complex in the isotropic phase of the chiral smectic liquid crystal compounds, the investigated compounds showed a similar behavior compared to that of nematic–isotropic behavior.  相似文献

In this work, the effect of thin films on the thermo-morphologic and thermotropic properties of the phase transitions between the nematic mesophase and isotropic liquid has been investigated. Investigations have been carried out for both the heating and cooling processes. The temperature and linear widths of the biphasic regions of the direct and reverse phase transitions in nematic liquid crystals versus thickness of the thin films have been calculated with a high accuracy. The shift of the nematic mesophase–isotropic liquid and the isotropic liquid–nematic mesophase phase transition temperatures to higher temperatures and the enlargement of the temperature and linear widths of the biphasic regions as the effect of surfaces have been found.  相似文献

We report permittivity studies in the isotropic liquid and anisotropic liquid crystalline (nematic or N) phases of a binary system, in which one component has molecules with a strongly polar longitudinal group, and the other has a weakly polar transverse group. The dielectric constant in the isotropic phase as well as its anisotropy in the N phase show, surprisingly, an anomalous non-monotonic dependence with concentration having a peak-like behavior for 10.2 mol% concentration of the weakly polar constituent. The transition between the two phases, being weakly first order, exhibits pretransitional effects signifying the appearance of the N-like regions in the isotropic phase. The coordinates of the maximum point of the convex shaped temperature-dependence of the dielectric constant in the isotropic phase, characteristic of strongly polar systems, also exhibit a non-monotonic dependence with concentration. Possible causes for these observations are discussed.  相似文献

We have used the density functional theory of freezing to study the liquid crystalline phase behavior of a system of highly elongated ellipsoidal conjugated oligomers dispersed in three different solvents namely chloroform, toluene and their equimolar mixture. The molecules are assumed to interact via solvent-implicit coarse-grained Gay–Berne potential. Pair correlation functions needed as input in the density functional theory have been calculated using the Percus–Yevick (PY) integral equation theory. Considering the isotropic and nematic phases, we have calculated the isotropic–nematic phase transition parameters and presented the temperature–density and pressure–temperature phase diagrams. Different solvent conditions are found not only to affect the transition parameters but also determine the capability of oligomers to form nematic phase in various thermodynamic conditions. In principle, our results are verifiable through computer simulations.  相似文献

Based on a thermodynamic model, we investigate how the density variation influences the smectic (Sm A)–isotropic (I) phase transition. We find that the density variation shifts the smectic A–isotropic transition temperature, however, first-order nature of the transition remains the same. Here, we also examine the effect of high pressure on the thermodynamic quantities. The present analysis shows that the pressure strongly influences the enthalpy and density step at the clearing transition. The pressure dependence of the thermodynamic properties is incorporated through the pressure dependent second Landau coefficient and the coefficients which couple the nematic and smectic order parameters to the density. We find a close agreement between theoretical and experimental results. Furthermore, we discuss the implications of the results for achiral liquid crystals.  相似文献

We have used the density functional theory to study the effect of molecular elongation on the isotropic-nematic, isotropic-smectic A and nematic-smectic A phase transitions of a fluid of molecules interacting via the Gay-Berne intermolecular potential. We have considered a range of length-to-width parameter 3.0 ⩽ x0 ⩽ 4.0 in steps of 0.2 at different densities and temperatures. Pair correlation functions needed as input information in density functional theory are calculated using the Percus-Yevick integral equation theory. Within the small range of elongation, the phase diagram shows significant changes. The fluid at low temperature is found to freeze directly from isotropic to smectic A phase for all the values of x0 considered by us on increasing the density while the nematic phase stabilizes in between isotropic and smectic A phases only at high temperatures and densities. Both isotropic-nematic and nematic-smectic A transition density and pressure are found to decrease as we increase x0. The phase diagram obtained is compared with computer simulation result of the same model potential and is found to be in good qualitative agreement.  相似文献

We use a phenomenological model to find theoretically the non-linear dielectric effect (NDE) in the isotropic phase above the isotropic to chiral smectic-C (I-SmC*) phase transition. We find an analytical expression for the NDE in the isotropic phase above the I-SmC* phase transition. The temperature dependence of the NDE is presented in the isotropic phase of the I-SmC* phase transition.  相似文献

Within the framework of Landau-de-Gennes formulation, we analyse the effect of pressure on electric-field-induced phase transitions in a liquid crystal which shows spontaneously an isotropic-smectic A transition. Inferring from the experimental pressure dependences on the layer spacing in smectic A phase, as well as the nematic-smectic A metastable temperature T*AN, we incorporated the pressure dependence in the free energy through (the surface energy term) and the coupling between the quadrupolar nematic ordering Qij and the smectic order parameter ψ. From the S-T phase diagram, we found that the stability of field-induced nematic phase increases with pressure, whereas the discontinuity of the transition decreases. Also, the region where paranematic phase transits directly to smectic A phase increases with pressure.  相似文献

This work reexamines and updates earlier investigations on the phase behaviour of the Gay-Berne liquid crystal model, concentrating on the effect of varying temperature. Constant volume and constant pressure Monte Carlo simulations are combined for systems consisting of N = 500 molecules along different isotherms over the reduced temperature range 0.60 ≤ T ≤ 1.25. As in previous simulation studies of the model, the study identifies nematic and smectic B phases on compressing the isotropic fluid, the particular phase sequence depending on temperature. The nematic phase is found to be stable with respect to the isotropic phase for reduced temperatures T ≥ 0.75. In the temperature range 0.75 ≤ T ≤ 1.25, the phase boundaries of the isotropic-nematic transition are obtained by computing the Helmholtz free energy of both phases from thermodynamic integration. From the simulation data, the relative volume change at the isotropic-nematic transition is about 2%, and this value appears to be rather insensitive to changes in temperature. On compressing the nematic phase, the Gay-Berne fluid undergoes a strong first-order transition to the smectic B phase. This transition is studied by using constant pressure simulation, and the coexistence properties are estimated from the limits of mechanical stability of the nematic phase. Larger relative volume changes are found at the transition than those suggested by previous studies, with typical values increasing up to 10.5% as the temperature is decreased. The results are consistent with the existence of strong coupling between nematic and smectic order parameters. For temperatures T ≤ 0.70 the nematic phase is no longer stable, and the phase sequence isotropic-smectic B is observed. Therefore, the Gay-Berne model exhibits an isotropic-nematic-smectic B triple point. Extrapolating the present simulation data, this triple point is located approximately at reduced temperature TINB ? 0.70 and reduced pressure PINB ? 1.825.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

We confine a colloidal liquid crystal between parallel plates separated down to several times the rod length. By connecting the system to a reservoir we effectively create a grand canonical system, in which the liquid crystal displays an isotropic phase in the reservoir, but upon strong confinement becomes nematic between the parallel plates. This capillary nematisation transition can be followed down to the single particle level by means of laser scanning confocal microscopy. We compare the experimental findings to density functional theories (DFTs), within the Zwanzig model as well as a more advanced DFT, in which the effect of rod flexibility is taken into account.  相似文献

A suspension of long rodlike colloids and long stiff polymers is modelled as a mixture of hard rods. The diameter of the colloid particle is finite, while the polymer is considered in the limit of zero diameter. Two types of first-order phase transition may occur in such mixtures: an isotropic-nematic phase transition if the density (or the pressure) is high enough, and a demixing transition involving two isotropic phases. The demixing transition has a critical point, and a triple point with one nematic and two isotropic phases may also exist. Phase diagrams are calculated. For the demixing isotropic-isotropic transition to be observed the ratio between the polymer length and the colloid length must exceed 0.36.  相似文献

We construct the complete liquid crystal phase diagram of hard plate-like cylinders for variable aspect ratio using Onsager's second virial theory and employing the Parsons–Lee decoupling approximation to account for higher-body interactions in the isotropic and nematic fluid phases. The stability of the solid (columnar) state at high packing fraction is included by invoking a simple equation of state based on a Lennard–Jones–Devonshire cell model which has proven to be quantitatively reliable over a large range of packing fractions. By employing an asymptotic analysis based on the Gaussian approximation we are able to show that the nematic–columnar transition is universal and independent of particle shape. The predicted phase diagram is in qualitative agreement with simulation results.  相似文献

The surface photo charge effect (SPCE) was applied for the first time at structure and phase transitions study of hydrogen bonded in dimer liquid crystals (HBDLCs). Due to the high sensitivity of this method, besides first-order phase transitions, characteristic for the p,n-octyloxibenzoic acids (8OBA), an order transition was definitely detected within the nematic range. We state that the SPCE, arising at the solid–HBDLCs interface due to the double electrical layer, is invariably concomitant with solid surface–liquid interfaces, and indicates that the changes of the characteristics of this layer, under incident optical irradiation, induce surface charge rearrangement and alternating potential difference. A mechanism of induction of the SPCE at the interface of solid surface–anisotropic liquids is proposed. We also indicate that this mechanism can be adapted for solid surface–isotropic liquid interface, including colloids (milk) and fog (aerosols)–condensed medium.  相似文献

BaTiO3 single crystals were grown by the melt-grown method. The effect of uniaxial pressure (0–1700 bar) on the dielectric properties of these crystals has been systematically studied. The external stress showed obvious effects on these properties. An increase in the difference between the Curie Tc and Curie–Weiss T0 temperatures induced by the applied pressure is observed. This could be ascribed to the inducing of non-ferroelectric cubic islands in the tetragonal phase by the applied compressive stress. On the other hand, the pressure behavior of thermal hysteresis and the ??/?T vs. T plot strongly suggests that the phase transition changes to second-order type with increasing pressure. The Curie–Weiss constant obtained from a modified Curie–Weiss law strongly decreases with increasing pressure, suggesting that the mechanism of phase transition is going to order–disorder type. An increase in the difference between the Curie Tc and Burn's TB temperatures with increasing pressure is observed. This could be ascribed to the narrowing of the temperature range on which the Curie–Weiss law is valid. In general, the obtained results are in good agreement with hydrostatic pressure data. Some kind of relaxation near Tc, which is strongly coupled with strain caused by applied compressive stress, is postulated.  相似文献

The effect of static external field is studied on the isotropic–nematic phase transition of a system of hard non-spherical particles (rods or platelets) with negative anisotropic polarizability (susceptabilities). On the basis of Onsager theory, the phase coexistence curve is calculated numerically without any approximation. It is found that a weakly ordered nematic phase (uniaxial planar) is in coexistence with a highly ordered biaxial nematic phase which ends at a tricritical point. In the limit of infinite field strength, the orientations of the particles are confined in a plane perpendicular to the field and continuous isotropic–nematic phase transition takes place.  相似文献

The paper presents a review of recent results on static dielectric behaviour in vicinity of weakly first order transition from isotropic liquid to a liquid crystalline nematic phase of compounds used in opto-electronic devices. Temperature behaviour of static permittivity and its derivative are interpreted in terms of a basic thermodynamic quantities increment (internal energy, entropy and Helmholtz free energy) induced by a probing electric field.  相似文献

A theory is developed of the anomalous magnetic and electric birefringence in the isotropic phase of nematic liquid crystals taking into account orientational correlations between neighbouring molecules. Use is made of a modification of Bethe’s method due to Krieger and James, and the properties of the system are derived in terms of a single parameter, viz., the two-particle interaction constant. The expressions for the magnetic and electric birefringence are similar in form to those given by the phenomenological model of de Gennes. Theoretical curves forp-azoxyanisole reproduce the trends in the observed data. A calculation of the nematic-isotropic transition point confirms that this treatment is an improvement over the mean field approximation in describing pre-transition phenomena in the isotropic phase.  相似文献
