In this paper we investigate the mixture adsorption of ethylene, ethane, nitrogen and argon on graphitized thermal carbon black and in slit pores by means of the Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulations. Pure component adsorption isotherms on graphitized thermal carbon black are first characterized with the GCMC method, and then mixture simulations are carried out over a wide range of pore width, temperature, pressure and composition to investigate the cooperative and competitive adsorption of all species in the mixture. Results of mixture simulations are compared with the experimental data of ethylene and ethane (Friederich and Mullins, 1972) on Sterling FTG-D5 (homogeneous carbon black having a BET surface area of 13 m2/g) at 298 K and a pressure range of 1.3–93 kPa. Because of the co-operative effect, the Henry constant determined by the traditional chromatography method is always greater than that obtained from the volumetric method.  相似文献

The performance of intermolecular potential models on the adsorption of benzene on graphitized thermal carbon black at various temperatures is investigated. Two models contain only dispersive sites, whereas the other two models account explicitly for the dispersive and electrostatic sites. Using numerous data in the literature on benzene adsorption on graphitized thermal carbon black at various temperatures, we have found that the effect of surface mediation on interaction between adsorbed benzene molecules must be accounted for to describe correctly the adsorption isotherm as well as the isosteric heat. Among the two models with partial charges tested, the WSKS model of Wick et al. that has only six dispersive sites and three discrete partial charges is better than the very expensive all-atom model of Jorgensen and Severance. Adsorbed benzene molecules on graphitized thermal carbon black have a complex orientation with respect to distance from the surface and also with respect to loading. At low loadings, they adopt the parallel configuration relative to the graphene surface, whereas at higher loadings (still less than monolayer coverage) some molecules adopt a slant orientation to maximize the fluid-fluid interaction. For loadings in the multilayer region, the orientation of molecules in the first layer is influenced by the presence of molecules in the second layer. The data that are used in this article come from the work of Isirikyan and Kiselev, Pierotti and Smallwood, Pierce and Ewing, Belyakova, Kiselev, and Kovaleva, and Carrott et al.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate the effect of the solid surface on the fluid-fluid intermolecular potential energy. This modified fluid-fluid interaction energy due to the inducement of a solid surface is used in the grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulation of various noble gases, nitrogen, and methane on graphitized thermal carbon black. This effect is such that the effective interaction potential energy between two particles close to surface is less than the potential energy if the solid substrate is not present. With this modification the GCMC simulation results agree extremely well with the experimental data over a wide range of pressures while the simulation results with the unmodified potential energy give rise to a shoulder near the neighborhood of monolayer coverage and the significant overprediction of the second and higher layer coverages. In particular the unmodified GCMC results exhibit very sharp change in those higher layers while the experimental data have a much gradual change in the uptake. We will illustrate this theory with adsorption data of argon, xenon, neon, nitrogen, and methane on graphitized thermal carbon black.  相似文献

We model nongraphitized carbon black surfaces and investigate adsorption of argon on these surfaces by using the grand canonical Monte Carlo simulation. In this model, the nongraphitized surface is modeled as a stack of graphene layers with some carbon atoms of the top graphene layer being randomly removed. The percentage of the surface carbon atoms being removed and the effective size of the defect (created by the removal) are the key parameters to characterize the nongraphitized surface. The patterns of adsorption isotherm and isosteric heat are particularly studied, as a function of these surface parameters as well as pressure and temperature. It is shown that the adsorption isotherm shows a steplike behavior on a perfect graphite surface and becomes smoother on nongraphitized surfaces. Regarding the isosteric heat versus loading, we observe for the case of graphitized thermal carbon black the increase of heat in the submonolayer coverage and then a sharp decline in the heat when the second layer is starting to form, beyond which it increases slightly. On the other hand, the isosteric heat versus loading for a highly nongraphitized surface shows a general decline with respect to loading, which is due to the energetic heterogeneity of the surface. It is only when the fluid-fluid interaction is greater than the surface energetic factor that we see a minimum-maximum in the isosteric heat versus loading. These simulation results of isosteric heat agree well with the experimental results of graphitization of Spheron 6 (Polley, M. H.; Schaeffer, W. D.; Smith, W. R. J. Phys. Chem. 1953, 57, 469; Beebe, R. A.; Young, D. M. J. Phys. Chem. 1954, 58, 93). Adsorption isotherms and isosteric heat in pores whose walls have defects are also studied from the simulation, and the pattern of isotherm and isosteric heat could be used to identify the fingerprint of the surface.  相似文献

The thermodynamic characteristics of adsorption of sulfur-containing amino acids and their derivatives on the surface of graphitized thermal carbon black were calculated by the molecular statistical method. The parameters of the atom-atom potential function of intermolecular interaction between the S atom in amino acids and the graphite C atom were determined. It was shown that an intramolecular H-bond influenced the adsorption of amino acids on the surface of graphitized thermal carbon black.  相似文献

We presented a detailed thermodynamic analysis of argon adsorption on a graphitized carbon black with a kinetic Monte Carlo scheme. In this study, we particularly paid attention to the formation of a hexagonal two-dimensional molecular layer on a graphite surface and discuss conditions of its stability and thermodynamic properties of the adsorbed phase as a function of loading. It is found that the simulation results are substantially affected by the dimensions of the simulation box when the monolayer forms a hexagonal ordered structure. This is due to the fact that the lattice constant is constrained by the dimensions of the surface. To circumvent this, we presented a thermodynamic technique, which allows for the variation of the box size as a function of loading, to determine the "intrinsic" lattice constant (rather than apparent average value because of the fixed dimensions of the simulation box) and the thermodynamic functions for the adsorbed phase: the Helmholtz free energy, the chemical potential, and the surface tension. The tangential and normal pressures as a function of the distance from the surface are also discussed.  相似文献

Comparative patterns of equilibrium adsorption of argon on the surface of graphitized thermal carbon black (GCB) and the inhomogeneous surfaces of nongraphitized carbon black and silica at 77 and 87.3 K were considered. It was shown that argon acquires the properties of a special phase with a layered structure and exhibits two-dimensional phase transitions with the formation of crystal-like layers near the homogeneous surface of GCB even at a temperature exceeding the triple point. However, already at a distance of three-four molecular diameters from the surface, adsorbed argon behaves as a bulk phase in a weak external field. The defect surface of nongraphitized carbon black and the amorphous surface structure of silica destroy the longrange order of adsorbed argon and lower its solidification temperature. Therefore, argon adsorbed at a temperature of 77 K, i.e., below the triple point, exhibits the properties of a supercooled liquid. The applicability of density functional theory to describe argon isotherms and heat of adsorption on inhomogeneous surfaces was demonstrated.

The isosteric heat of adsorption of methane in an activated carbon adsorbent has been modeled by Monte Carlo simulation, using a pore-size distribution (PSD) to relate simulation results for pores of different sizes to the experimental adsorbent. Excellent fits were obtained between experimental and simulated isosteric heats of adsorption of methane in BPL activated carbon. The PSD was then used to predict the adsorption of methane and ethane in the same carbon adsorbent, with good results. The PSD derived from isosteric heat data was shown to be richer in information than PSDs obtained by the more conventional method of fitting to isotherm data.  相似文献

Adsorption behavior of carbon dioxide confined in pillared clays is analyzed by using constant pressure Gibbs ensemble Monte Carlo (GEMC) method. In our simulation, 1-site and 3-site models are used to represent carbon dioxide. At the 1-site model, carbon dioxide is described as a Lennard-Jones (LJ) sphere, while at the 3-site model, carbon dioxide is modeled as a three-sites linear chain represented by EPM2 potential considering the quadrapolar effect. The potential model from Yi et al. for pillared clays is used to emphasize its quasi two-dimensional structure. Comparing the calculated results from the 1-site and the 3-site models at T=228.15 and 258.15 K, we observe that the adsorption amount from the two models is the same basically. However, the local density presents a significant difference, because the shoulder in the main peak near the wall from 3-site model can reflect the orientation of carbon dioxide. Accordingly, in the systematical investigation to explore the effect of porosity and pore width on the adsorption of carbon dioxide in pillared clays, the 3-site model was only used. We observe that for a narrow pore of H=1.02 nm, each isotherm shape displays type I curve, suggesting that it is not inflected by the porosity. However, for the larger pores of H=1.70 and H=2.38 nm, the increase of the porosity alters the shape of adsorption isotherms from a simple linear relation to the first order jump, indicating that the porosity is of very important factor to affect adsorption and phase behavior of fluids confined in pillared clays. The excess adsorptions of carbon dioxide at supercritical temperatures of T=323.15 and 348.15 K are also investigated. We find that the maximum exists for each excess isotherm, and the optimal pressure corresponding to the maximum increases with the pore width. However, the porosity has no significant effect on the optimal pressure.  相似文献

The thermodynamic characteristics of adsorption on the surface of graphitized thermal carbon black at 300 K were determined by the molecular statistical method for three phenylalklylamines. The influence of the intramolecular H-bond on the conformation of the molecules compared with structurally related n-alkyl-benzenes was considered. It was shown that the conformations of the molecules could influence chromatographic retention. Conformational isomers stabilized by intramolecular H-bonds were found to retain their structure in adsorption on graphitized thermal carbon black.  相似文献

Separation of olefin/paraffin is an energy-intensive and difficult separation process in petrochemical industry. Energy-efficient adsorption process is considered as a promising alternative to the traditional cryogenic distillation for separating olefin/paraffin mixtures. In this work, we explored the feasibility of adsorptive separation of olefin/paraffin mixtures using a magnesium-based metal-organic framework, Mg-MOF-74. Adsorption equilibria and kinetics of ethane, ethylene, propane, and propylene on a Mg-MOF-74 adsorbent were determined at 278, 298, and 318 K and pressures up to 100 kPa. A dual-site Sips model was used to correlate the adsorption equilibrium data, and a micropore diffusion model was applied to extract the diffusivities from the adsorption kinetics data. A grand canonical Monte Carlo simulation was conducted to calculate the adsorption isotherms and to elucidate the adsorption mechanisms. The simulation results showed that all four adsorbate molecules are preferentially adsorbed on the open metal sites where each metal site binds one adsorbate molecule. Propylene and propane have a stronger affinity to the Mg-MOF-74 adsorbent than ethane and ethylene because of their significant dipole moments. Adsorption equilibrium selectivity, combined equilibrium and kinetic selectivity, and adsorbent selection parameter for pressure swing adsorption processes were estimated. The relatively high values of adsorption selectivity suggest that it is feasible to separate ethylene/ethane, propylene/propane, and propylene/ethylene pairs in a vacuum swing adsorption process using Mg-MOF-74 as an adsorbent.  相似文献

The thermodynamic characteristics of adsorption of iodobenzene, 2-iodothiophene, and 1- and 2-iodoadamantanes on the surface of graphitized thermal carbon black were determined experimentally. The influence of the special features of the molecular structure of the adsorbates on the thermodynamic characteristics of adsorption was studied. The atom-atom approximation of the semiempirical molecular-statistical theory of adsorption was used to calculate the thermodynamic characteristics of adsorption of the adsorbates using the newly determined potential function parameters of pair intermolecular interaction (φ(r)) of I with C atoms of the basal graphite face. For the example of isostructural monohalogenated benzenes, thiophenes, and adamantanes, a comparative analysis of the contributions of the F, Cl, Br, and I atoms to the thermodynamic characteristics of adsorption was performed for the nonspecific adsorption of these compounds on a plane graphitized carbon black surface.  相似文献

In this third article of the series, a new anisotropic united atoms (AUA) intermolecular potential parameter set has been proposed for the carbon force centers connecting the aromatic rings of polyaromatic hydrocarbons to predict thermodynamic properties using both the Gibbs ensemble and NPT Monte Carlo simulations. The model uses the same parameters as previous AUA models used for the aromatic CH force centers. The optimization procedure is based on the minimization of a dimensionless error criterion incorporating various thermodynamic data of naphthalene at 400 and 550 K. The new model has been evaluated on a series of polyaromatic and naphthenoaromatic hydrocarbons over a wide range of temperatures up to near-critical conditions. Vaporization enthalpy, liquid density, and normal boiling temperature are reproduced with good accuracy. The new potential parameters have also been tested successfully on toluene, 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene, styrene, m-xylene, n-hexylbenzene, and n-dodecylbenzene to demonstrate their transferability to alkylbenzenes.  相似文献

We analyze argon adsorption isotherms and isosteric heat of adsorption on graphitized and nongraphitized carbon black and silica surfaces by means of nonlocal density functional theory (NLDFT). It is shown that in the case of graphitized carbon black the behavior of the adsorbed phase is nearly identical to that in the bulk phase at a distance larger than about 3-4 molecular diameters from the surface. At a smaller distance argon forms solid-like molecular layers at a temperature at least 3.5 K above the triple point, with the interlayer distance being markedly smaller than the argon collision diameter. In the case of defected or amorphous surfaces adsorbed argon is liquid-like below its triple point. Our extension of the Tarazona NLDFT to amorphous solids (NLDFT-AS) and the Kierlik and Rosinberg version of NLDFT excellently fit argon adsorption isotherms and properly predict the isosteric heat of adsorption. We showed that the surface roughness affects the calculated heat of adsorption, which allowed us to adjust the width of the diffuse zone of the nongraphitized carbon black and the silica surface.  相似文献

A comparison of Sterling FT, a graphitized carbon black used widely in ad- sorption and gas chromatography, and Carbopack C, a commercially available graphitized carbon black, was made in terms of retention parameters, heats of adsorption and their behaviour at various coating percentages.

The effects induced by hydrogen treatment at high temperature are compared, and it is shown that graphs of the heat of adsorption versus percentage of liquid phase added are very useful in understanding the difference in the surface properties of the two materials. The advantages of the two carbon blacks in practical gas chromato- graphy are discussed.  相似文献

The experimentally determined thermodynamic characteristics of adsorption of adamantane derivatives with different numbers and chemical natures of functional groups on graphitized carbon black under the conditions of gas-adsorption chromatography were analyzed. The theoretical values of the entropy of adsorption calculated in terms of the two-dimensional ideal gas model were correlated with the corresponding experimental values, and some special features of the molecular structure of the compounds studied were determined. Using the method of structural fragments and sorption-structure correlations for the adamantane derivatives and cyclohexane, it was established that the adsorption potential of cage adamantane molecules was largely determined by the cyclohexane fragment with the largest number of substituents, which was situated in the immediate vicinity of the flat graphite-like adsorbent surface.  相似文献
