In this paper it is shown that if and are two closed convex subsets of a Banach space and , then whenever the convex cone, , is weak* closed, where and are the support function and the normal cone of the set respectively. This closure condition is shown to be weaker than the standard interior-point-like conditions and the bounded linear regularity condition.

In this paper, we consider the explicit construction of local duals of and the poly-scale refinability of functions in when is an -refinable function. We show that the minimal hypersurface method of Schoen and Yau can be used for the ``quantitative' study of positive scalar curvature. More precisely, we show that if a manifold admits a metric with or , where is the scalar curvature of , any 2-tensor on and the Weyl tensor of , then any closed orientable stable minimal (totally geodesic in the second case) hypersurface also admits a metric with the corresponding positivity of scalar curvature. A corollary pertaining to the topology of such hypersurfaces is proved in a special situation.

A ring is said to be coprimely packed if whenever is an ideal of and is a set of maximal ideals of with , then for some . Let be a ring and be the localization of at its set of monic polynomials. We prove that if is a Noetherian normal domain, then the ring is coprimely packed if and only if is a Dedekind domain with torsion ideal class group. Moreover, this is also equivalent to the condition that each proper prime ideal of is a set theoretic complete intersection. A similar result is also proved when is either a Noetherian arithmetical ring or a Bézout domain of dimension one.

We revisit two results of Curto and Fialkow on moment matrices. The first result asserts that every sequence whose moment matrix is positive semidefinite and has finite rank is the sequence of moments of an -atomic nonnegative measure on . We give an alternative proof for this result, using algebraic tools (the Nullstellensatz) in place of the functional analytic tools used in the original proof of Curto and Fialkow. An easy observation is the existence of interpolation polynomials at the atoms of the measure having degree at most if the principal submatrix of (indexed by all monomials of degree ) has full rank . This observation enables us to shortcut the proof of the following result. Consider a basic closed semialgebraic set , where and . If is positive semidefinite and has a flat extension such that all localizing matrices are positive semidefinite, then has an atomic representing measure supported by . We also review an application of this result to the problem of minimizing a polynomial over the set .

Let be a complex Banach space and a bounded linear operator on . is called meromorphic if the spectrum of is a countable set, with the only possible point of accumulation, such that all the nonzero points of are poles of . By means of the analytical core we give a spectral theory of meromorphic operators. Our results are a generalization of some results obtained by Gong and Wang (2003).

A finitely presented group is said to be properly -realizable if there exists a compact -polyhedron with and whose universal cover has the proper homotopy type of a (p.l.) -manifold with boundary. In this paper we show that, after taking wedge with a -sphere, this property does not depend on the choice of the compact -polyhedron with . We also show that (i) all -ended and -ended groups are properly -realizable, and (ii) the class of properly -realizable groups is closed under amalgamated free products (HNN-extensions) over a finite cyclic group (as a step towards proving that -ended groups are properly -realizable, assuming -ended groups are).

B. Blackadar recently proved that any full corner in a unital C*-algebra has K-theoretic stable rank greater than or equal to the stable rank of . The proofs rely partly on algebraic analogs of Blackadar's methods and partly on a new technique for reducing problems of higher stable rank to a concept of stable rank one for skew (rectangular) corners . The convexity number of a set is the least size of a family of convex sets with . is countably convex if its convexity number is countable. Otherwise is uncountably convex.

Uncountably convex closed sets in have been studied recently by Geschke, Kubis, Kojman and Schipperus. Their line of research is continued in the present article. We show that for all , it is consistent that there is an uncountably convex closed set whose convexity number is strictly smaller than all convexity numbers of uncountably convex subsets of .

Moreover, we construct a closed set whose convexity number is and that has no uncountable -clique for any 1$">. Here is a -clique if the convex hull of no -element subset of is included in . Our example shows that the main result of the above-named authors, a closed set either has a perfect -clique or the convexity number of is in some forcing extension of the universe, cannot be extended to higher dimensions.

The Pontrjagin-Thom construction expresses a relation between the oriented bordism groups of framed immersions , and the stable homotopy groups of spheres. We apply the Pontrjagin-Thom construction to the oriented bordism groups of mappings n$">, with mildest singularities. Recently, O. Saeki showed that for , the group is isomorphic to the group of smooth structures on the sphere of dimension . Generalizing, we prove that is isomorphic to the -th stable homotopy group , , where is the group of oriented auto-diffeomorphisms of the sphere and is the group of rotations of .
