The influence of Zetag and SNF FO cationic polyelectrolytes on the aggregation kinetics of bentonite particles in a flow system is studied in detail as a function of the dose of added polymer, charge density of its macromolecules, the regime and intensity of system stirring, and the type of stirrer (magnetic and mechanical stirrers). It is shown that there is an optimal regime, namely, the alternation of slow and rather rapid stirring, that provides the formation of the largest and strongest flocs. The rate of aggregation and the size of formed flocs increase with the amount of added reagent irrespective of the intensity of system stirring, as well as with an increase in the charge density of polyelectrolyte, which is responsible for the affinity of macromolecules for the surface. The effect of polymer charge on the flocculation kinetics is exhibited first of all upon the slow stirring of suspension. The difference in the sizes of aggregates resulted from the flocculation of macromolecules with different charges is leveled with an increase in stirring intensity. An empirical method for comparing the efficiency of the flocculating action of polymers in suspensions prepared using different types of stirrers is proposed.  相似文献

Peculiarities of the formation of polyelectrolyte complexes based on cationic and anionic copolymers of acrylamide having different macromolecule charge densities on the surfaces of kaolin particles in highly concentrated salt solution are investigated. The interactions of the copolymers with the clay particle surface and with each other are studied by electrokinetic and IR spectroscopy methods. The rheological properties of kaolin suspensions are investigated in a salt solution in the presence of the polyelectrolytes. The flocculation ability of the polyelectrolytes and their binary mixtures with respect to clay-salt dispersion is estimated. The mechanism for the formation of polyelectrolyte complexes on the surface of clay particles is discussed. It is shown that the complexation of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes on the surfaces of clay particles intensifies the flocculation of clay-salt dispersions.  相似文献

Studies of the adsorption of high molecular weight polymers on colloidal latex and silica particles and their subsequent flocculation were carried out. Neutral polyethylene oxide samples with both a narrow and a broad molecular weight distribution were used together with low charged cationic copolymers. The influence of the particle concentration and polymer dose on the flocculation were systematically investigated under quiescent conditions.Equilibrium bridging only occurred with polyelectrolyte, even in very dilute suspensions, at high particle coverage. In contrast to this, non-equilibrium bridging occurred with both neutral polymer and polyelectrolytes but only for more concentrated suspensions and small amounts of adsorbed polymer. Polymer adsorption in dilute suspensions, which did not show particle aggregation was measured an electrophoretic technique. In more concentrated suspensions, where flocculation takes place, we found that aggregation prevents further polymer adsorption and induces both an excluded volume and a surface effect. The consequences on the shape of the isotherms differ according to the aggregation mechanism.A significant decrease of the amount, , of adsorbed polymer is observed with non-equilibrium bridging. When both mechanisms simultaneously contribute to the aggregation, the value of depends on their relative importance. In the intermediate range of copolymer dose their respective contributions are critically sensitive to the details of the mixing step and stirring, leading to non reproducible experimental results.  相似文献

The role of sequential adsorption of a non-interacting pair of polymer (polyacrylic acidPAA) and surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulfate-SDS) on alumina particles and in determining the stability of their suspensions was studied with particular attention to the conformation of the polymer. It was found that the sequence of addition is of critical importance in determining the dispersion/flocculation of this system. When SDS was added first, both PAA conformation and suspension stability varied with SDS concentration. Whereas when PAA was added first, the subsequent adsorption of SDS molecules had no effect on either the polymer conformation or the suspension stability. This is attributed to masking of SDS species by the larger polymer chains. SDS can not however be completely masked by PAA chains once the PAA concentration is decreased below the optimal concentration for flocculation. When the stirring duration was increased, the mode of addition showed no effect suggesting that the system then reaches equilibrium. Interestingly, a small amount of pre-adsorbed PAA was found to facilitate the adsorption of SDS.  相似文献

Associating polymers are hydrophilic long-chain molecules containing a small number of hydrophobic groups, and act as flocculants in aqueous suspensions. The effects of associating and nonassociating polymers on viscosity behavior are studied for silica suspensions. Since flocculation is induced by polymer bridging, the viscosity behavior is converted from Newtonian to shear-thinning profiles. The additions of surfactant cause an increase in viscosity for suspensions prepared with associating polymer, whereas the flow behavior of suspensions with nonassociating polymer is not significantly influenced. In adsorption of associating polymers onto silica particles, the chain may adopt a conformation with a water-soluble backbone attached to the particle surfaces. The hydrophobic groups extending from the chains adsorbed onto different particles can form a micelle by association with surfactant. Therefore, the bridging flocculation is enhanced by surfactant. The cooperative micellar formation between associating polymer and surfactant is responsible for viscosity increase in suspensions.  相似文献

Successive adsorption of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes, namely, cationic and anionic acrylamide copolymers, on a solid phase surface from solutions with high ionic strength is investigated. The constants of the Freundlich equation are calculated for the adsorption of different polymers. The interrelation between the adsorption values of polymers and their flocculation activity with respect to clay-salt suspensions is determined. The successive adsorption of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes strongly affects the flocculation due to the formation of polyelectrolyte complexes on the surface of clay particles. The mechanism for complexation is proposed.  相似文献

The adsorption of cationic polyelectrolytes on colloidal silica-particles is investigated. The polyelectrolytes poly(diallyl-dimethyl-ammoniumchloride) PDADMAC of different molar mass have been used. The adsorbed amount is influenced by the ionic strength and pH of the suspension and the molar mass of the macromolecule. The adsorption determines the zetapotential of the covered particles. The electrostatic interaction between the particles as well as the structure of the adsorbed polyelectrolytes play an important role in the stabilization and flocculation behaviour of the polyelectrolyte covered suspensions.  相似文献

The flocculation kinetics of kaolin particles induced by two polyelectrolytes is studied by using small-angle laser light scattering (SALLS). Two different methods, image analysis and SALLS, are used to calculated the fractal dimensions of flocs formed under different flocculation mechanisms. For a high charge density of polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride (PDADMAC), the initially flocculation rates are slow due to the quite low molecular weight. Smaller and more compact flocs are in the particle–particle connections, and restructuring of the flocs occurs in the flocculation process. With cationic polyacrylamide C498 of very high molecular weight and low charge density, however, the initially flocculation rates are much higher due to its rapid adsorption on kaolin particles, but it will take the adsorbed polymer a much longer time to reach equilibrium due to re-conformation. High potentialities of adsorption prevent the particles from entering the interior of the floc structure or rearrangement, which results in a more open floc structure. Different underlying flocculation mechanisms are evident for these two kinds of polyelectrolytes, in which charge neutralization is mainly involved for the low molecular weight and high charge density polymer of PDADMAC while polymer bridging is suggested to be the dominant mechanism for the high molecular weight polyelectrolyte of C498.  相似文献

Flocculation of model silica suspensions by cationic polyelectrolytes was studied using optical and microelectrophoretic techniques. Polymer charge density effects were determined by varying the degree of quaternization or by changing pH, depending on the nature of the amine group present.Charge neutralization appears to be the principal flocculation mechanism, although polymer bridging may play a role once the particle surface charge is significantly reduced. Silica retains a net negative ζ-potential (−25 ± 5 mV) under optimal flocculation conditions. This finding is discussed semi-quantitatively in terms of an “electrostatic patch” adsorption model for flocculation.  相似文献

The regularities, kinetics and mechanisms of flocculation of Escherichia coli and B. thuringiensis var. israelensis (Bti) cellular suspensions by water-soluble polymers-and first of all cationic polyelectrolytes of different charge density and stiffness of the macromolecule chain have been investigated. The effect of the focculant dose and nature, its charge density, the hydrophobic-hydrophilic balance in macromolecule, the suspension concentration, the mode of adding the reagent, the pH and the medium composition on the degree of aggregation of cells both in perikinetic regime and in a flowing system is considered. It has been shown that the main laws of microorganism's suspension flocculation are the same as the laws of flocculation of inorganic dispersions but at the same time the first process is much more complicated because the cell-flocculant interactions are strongly affected by products of cell metabolism, components of the culture liquor, pH value, electrolyte content as well as by the changing structure of the cell surface. On the basis of complex measurements of polymer adsorption and its effect on the electrokinetic potential and degree of aggregation of cells, a conclusion is made that the aggregation of E. coli cells by flexible polyelectrolytes like polydiethylaminoethylmetacrylate and its copolymers with acrylic acid, acrylamide and vinylpyrrolidone is due to charge neutralization, while the flocculation in the presence of rigid-chain chitosan and its derivatives is caused mainly by "bridging" between cells via adsorbed macromolecules. Extraction of cells from suspension can be enhanced by combination of electroflotation and flocculation by cationic polyelectrolytes. It has been shown that dilute suspensions of Bti bacteria can be effectively flocculated and concentrated using different cationic and anionic polyelectrolytes that is necessary for its formulation and use as anti-mosquito agent.  相似文献

The regularities of the flocculation of kaolin suspensions with binary mixtures of cationic polyelectrolytes are studied. The relationship between the viscosity of flocculant solutions and the conditions of efficient flocculation is studied. It is established that an increase in the sedimentation rate upon the application of binary mixtures of flocculants results form their synergistic effect. The synergistic effect is assumed to be due to a reduction in the swelling coefficient of adsorbed polyelectrolyte macromolecules, which gives rise to the formation of floccules with enhanced density and strength.  相似文献

The focused beam reflectance measurement (FBRM), also known as scanning laser microscopy (SLM), was used as a real-time monitor to study the flocculation and reflocculation of clay suspensions under different shear conditions in the presence of single polymer, dual polymer, microparticle and poly(ethylene oxide)/phenolformaldehyde (PEO/PFR) flocculation systems. For initial flocculation, the high molecular weight PEO and cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) produced larger flocs than others. However, reflocculation of clay suspensions formed by these non- or low-charged polymers was insignificant after the initial flocs were broken under high shear force. In contrast, high charge density polymers, such as poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC), do not form large initial flocs, but they showed significant reflocculation ability under a continuous shear condition. It is concluded that high flocculation can be obtained by effective polymer bridging, but high reflocculation can only be induced by high electrostatic attractive forces between suspended particles.  相似文献

The stabilization and flocculation behavior of colloidal silica-particles with cationic polyelectrolytes (PE) is investigated. The zetapotentials, diffusion coefficients and flocculation rate constants of silica particles have been measured as a function of the adsorbed amount of cationic polyelectrolytes poly(diallyl-dimethyl-ammoniumchloride) (PDADMAC) of different molar masses and of statistic copolymers of DADMAC and N-methyl-N-vinyl-acetamide (NMVA) of various compositions at different salt concentrations and pH-values. Very fast flocculation due to van der Waals attraction occurs if the zetapotential is small. At low ionic strength this condition occurs just below the plateau of the adsorption isotherms where the surface charges are screened by adsorbed polycations. Additionally with high molecular polycations slow mosaic flocculation is observed at lower PE concentrations. At high ionic strength fast flocculation takes place at low macroion concentration due to the screening of the surface charges by adsorbed polycations and salt ions. At medium concentrations of polycations below plateau adorption slow bridging flocculation is observed. At plateau adsorption the suspensions become stabilized up to high ionic strength. At low salt concentration charge reversal at full coverage with polycations results in electrostatic repulsion. At high ionic strength the particles are stabilized sterically due to the osmotic repulsion of the long adsorbed PE tails. Therefore macroions of high molar mass are necessary to stabilize the suspension at high ionic strength. Received: 27 January 1998 Accepted: 23 March 1988  相似文献

The stabilization and flocculation behaviour of colloidal latex particles covered with cationic polyelectrolytes (PE) is studied with photon correlation spectroscopy and zetapotential measurements. Diffusion coefficients, flocculation rate constants and zetapotentials have been determined as a function of adsorbed amount of cationic poly-(diallyl-dimethyl-ammoniumchloride) (PDADMAC) of different molar masses and of statistic copolymers of DADMAC and N-methyl-N-vinyl-acetamide (NMVA) of various compositions in water and at high ionic strength. Flocculation by van der Waals attraction can be observed if the zetapotential is low. This occurs, if the surface charge is screened by the oppositely charged cations. Furthermore, in the case of adsorption of high molecular polycations mosaic flocculation occurs if the adsorbed amount is low. At high ionic strength, flocculation takes place if the adsorbed amount is below the adsorption plateau. If the adsorption plateau is reached the suspensions become stabilized. In water the charge reversal at full coverage leads to electrosteric stabilization both with low and high molar mass polycations. At high ionic strength only polycations with high molar mass are able to stabilize the suspension. If a certain molar mass of the polycation is exceeded, steric stabilization of the suspension occurs due to the formation of long adsorbed PE tails and their osmotic repulsion. The layer thicknesses are determined as a function of the molar mass. Received: 4 July 2000/Accepted: 18 August 2000  相似文献

The mechanisms of eight anionic polyelectrolytes stabilizing colloidal sized alpha-Al(2)O(3), pure ZrO(2), and Y(2)O(3)-doped ZrO(2) particles in aqueous solution are discussed. The polyelectrolytes studied were the Na(+) and NH(4)(+) salts of polyacrylic acid and polymethacrylic acid having different molecular weights. The particle-dispersant interactions were studied by measuring adsorption isotherms, particle size, thickness of adsorbed layer, and zeta potentials by elektrokinetic sonic analysis at different powder volume fractions (straight phi=0.01-0.3), pH, and electrolyte (KCl) content. The dissociation of the polyelectrolytes was studied by potentiometric titrations. The dissociation constant of the polymethacrylates was found to be 0.6 pH unit higher than that for the polyacrylates. High-affinity adsorption isotherms were observed over the pH range when the polyelectrolytes were fully ionized. The results show good correlation between adsorption isotherms and zeta potential data in systems of dispersed, dilute alumina particles. When particles and polymers were of equal charge (the same sign of charge) the polymer shell was thicker. At higher volume fractions (straight phi=0.3), and when alumina particles/added ammonium polyelectrolyte were of equal charge, a maximum in the absolute value of zeta potential resulted. Due to adsorption all the anionic polyelectrolytes studied provided electrosteric stabilization of the alpha-Al(2)O(3), and Y(2)O(3)-doped ZrO(2) suspensions by enhancing the zeta potential to 40 mV or over and by shifting the isoelectric point to lower pH, the low-molecular-weight polyelectrolytes decreasing the isoelectric point more than the polyelectrolytes having higher molecular weight. The polyelectrolytes studied failed to stabilize pure monoclinic ZrO(2) particles. Due to the shortness of the chain of polyelectrolytes studied, no bridging was observed between oppositely charged polyelectrolyte/alumina particles. Copyright 2000 Academic Press.  相似文献

Standardized mixing procedure was applied to the analysis of flocculation of polystyrene latex (PSL) particles with polyelectrolytes. After confirming the initial enhancement of flocculation rate in the very beginning followed by abrupt stop with excess dosage, attention was shifted to the system of moderate dosage. In the former, effects of ionic strength were further analyzed to find the consistency with adsorption isotherm. In the latter, flocculation started slowly in the beginning, sometime slower than salt-induced rapid coagulation, however, the rate gradually increases in the middle stage. Often, the increased rate exceeds that of salt-induced rapid coagulation. This behavior emerged more clearly in the case of lower ionic strength. This is the indication that the rate of relaxation of polymer on the colloidal surface is a function of surface coverage and ionic strength. The ultimate degree of flocculation is usually higher than that observed for excess dosage. The size distribution of flocs was also examined, however, no clear difference between different experimental conditions was confirmed for the same degree of flocculation.  相似文献

The flocculation of colloidal suspensions is an important unit operation in many industries, as it greatly improves the performance of solid separation processes. The number of available techniques for evaluating flocculation processes on line is limited, and most of these are only functional in dilute suspensions. Thus, techniques usable for flocculation characterization in high-solids suspensions are desirable. This study investigates the use of dielectric spectroscopy to monitor the flocculation of polystyrene particles with a cationic polymer. The frequency-dependent permittivity is modeled and the model parameters are used to describe the particle aggregation. The results show a peak in the modeled time constants of the dielectric relaxation at the onset of flocculation. Further, the adsorption of polymeric flocculant onto the particle surface results in a reduction in particle charge, evident as a decrease in the magnitude of the dielectric dispersion. The use of dielectric spectroscopy is found to be valuable for assessing flocculation processes in high-solids suspensions, as changes in parameters such as floc size and charge can be detected.  相似文献

In order to elucidate the mechanisms of flocculation by polymer mixtures, the effect of adsorption of non-ionic poly(ethylene oxide) — PEO, two samples of strongly (SNF FO 4800) and medium charged (SNF FO 4350) cationic and two samples of medium (SNF AN 935) and weakly charged (SNF AN 905) anionic polyelectrolytes (PE) as well as their binary mixtures on the electrokinetic potential of bentonite and kaolin particles has been studied. It is shown that in the presence of PEO-anionic/cationic polymer mixture, the electrokinetic potential of particles is determined by the adsorption of the polyelectrolyte; neither cationic nor anionic segments can be displaced by the non-ionic polymer. In mixtures of cationic and anionic polyelectrolytes, the ζ-potential of particles is determined by the adsorbed amount of anionic polymer independently of the charge density of PE and way of addition of the mixture components to the suspension, i.e. (1) first adding the cationic polymer, then the anionic one, or (2) first adding the anionic polymer then the cationic one, or (3) adding an increasing amount of pre-prepared 1: 1 mixture. The highest absolute ζ-potential values are observed for pH 7.5 when the surface of bentonite or kaolin particles is “purely” negatively charged and the anionic PE layer is most extended because of few contacts to the surface. With decreasing the pH, the (negative) ζ-potential of particles decreases due to appearance of a small amount of positive charges on the surface that bond an increasing amount of negative segments and results in shrinking of the adsorbed layer of the anionic PE. It is shown also that the electrokinetic potential of particles in anionic and cationic PE mixtures at all studied pH (4, 5, and 7.5) depends on the spatial distribution of negatively charged segments near the surface. The regularities observed are explained by formation of long loops and tails of anionic segments on the surface because of the small number of contacts to the surface; the cationic polyelectrolyte forms on the surface a thin layer with a big number of contacts and which is hidden behind the more extended anionic polymer layer.  相似文献

New polymeric aza-crown ethers (PACE), soluble in water and organic solutions and cross-linked ones, containing different macrocycles in side chains have been synthesised by polymerisation and chemical modification reactions. The coordination próperties of these PACE are studied. It is shown that during coordination of the VO2+, Cu2+ ions with PACE, cross-linking of macromolecules by metal ions takes place by “sandwich” complex formation. The character of complexes distribution along PACE coils may be equal or nonequal, depending on polymer reactivity. The synthesised PACE are used as high specific polymer reagents for colloid rare metals recovery. It is shown that flocculation of negatively charged inorganic sols with PACE is due to electrostatic adsorption and specific binding. In acid and neutral media, dispersions of gold, silver, copper ferrocyanide and silicon dioxide undergo high flocculation as a result of non-specific electrostatic adsorption. Alkaline media provide conditions for donor-acceptor binding, increasing flocculation selectivity. In the uncharged state (pH 11,2) PACE exhibit high selectivity in binding gold particles. Stability of colloidal dispersions in the presence of monomer aza-crown ether (ACE) indicates an important polymer influence on the fine metal particles flocculation.
