Nuclear science summer school for high school students

We have developed a two-week summer lecture and laboratory course that introduces high school students to concepts in nuclear science. The program has operated at the San Jose State University Nuclear Science Facility for two years. Experienced high school science teachers run the summer school, assisted by other science teachers. Students consider the program to be effective. Interpolation of relative retentions as a tool for identification of perhalogenated compounds

Summary Separation of perhalogenated compounds resulting from thermolysis, photolysis or radiolysis of mixtures of halogens in carbon tetrachloride was carried out by programmed temperature gas chromatography. Plots of relative retentions (to CBr₄) vs the number of bromine atoms present for known compounds of the general formula C_xBr_yCl_z (x=1 and 2; y+z=4 or 6) gave three linear correlations (all with r>0.99). These correlations permitted projections of the identities of reaction products for which no standards were available. Interlaboratory comparison of INAA of semiconductor silicon

Formation of an unusual charge-transfer network from an ionic liquid

An intriguing and novel charge-transfer complex between dimethyldihydrophenazine and diethylviologen has been crystallized from an ionic liquid at room temperature, resulting in an interesting stacking motif of interrupted D***A***D type triads: efficient formation of the complex is seen within an ionic liquid and acetone, with the complex absorbing strongly across nearly the entire visible-NIR spectral region.

Report On ‘Planning And Implementing Curriculum Change in Chemistry: A Case Study in Creating a Blended General/Organic Course Sequence’

A new curriculum involving a blended general and organic chemistry course is being introduced at San Jose State University this fall by Stephen Branz and Maureen Scharberg. They shared their experiences in creating this new curriculum and described how they overcame resistance to this change from the university community to the workshop participants. The participants of the workshop then had the opportunity to examine the new curriculum and consider how they would approach problems in both the planning and implementation phase of such a project. The workshop participants created a final list of ‘pros and cons’ for the planning stage (content, pedagogy, and transportability) and a list of possible strategies for the implementation stage (marketing, resources, and logistics).

Determination of 25 elements in biological standard reference materials by neutron activation analysis

Trace element analysis has been carried out on standard biological reference samples such as bovine liver, orchard and tomato leaves. Computer aided instrumental neutron activation analysis and, in some cases, preliminary chemical group separation followed by NAA were used. The Missouri University Research Reactor (MURR) Nuclear Analysis Program

The University of Missouri-Columbia (MU) Research (MURR) began operations in 1966 and has operated at 10 megawatts over 90 percent of the time since 1977. The MURR organizational structure includes reactor operations, health physics and technical service and research groups. Education in nuclear science at IPEN - CNEN,São Paulo,Brazil: Advanced School of Nuclear Energy—EAEN

EAEN (Advanced School of Nuclear Energy, 2010) is an annual school that consists of a week of activities in the area of Nuclear Physics, Radiochemistry and uses of Nuclear Energy for a public made of high school students. The EAEN project represents a pioneering program on science education and dissemination of knowledge, conducted by researchers and focused mainly on high school and scientific education for the population in general. The school’s priority is to explore the failures and the lack of education in the dissemination of nuclear energy for high school students as well as to attract prospective students with great potential for graduate courses of IPEN and other institutions in Sao Paulo and in Brazil.     

Über die Isomerenverteilung bei der Darstellung substituierter Aryldichlorphosphine mit Aluminiumchlorid

The distribution of isomers at the preparation of substituted aryldichlorophosphines using AlCl₃ was determined by means of IR spectroscopy. The isomers of the methylphenyl- and chlorophenyl dichlorophosphines as well as the 1,4-fluorophenyl dichlorphosphine (prepared for the first time) were prepared by way of the corresponding substituted phenylphosphonic bis(diethylamides). Thus calibration curves were obtained for quantitative evaluation. Alkyl- as well as halogene benzenes yield mainly 1,4-substituted aryl dichlorophosphines. Halogenobenzenes yield little 1,2 and little 1,3 isomers, whereas up to 40% 1,3 isomers with little 1,2 product are obtained from alkylbenzenes. *** DIRECT SUPPORT *** A3615112 00022

N-1-Oxythymine (IV) has been prepared in two different ways, one of which proves the structure. The same applies to N-3-oxy-5-methylcytosine (X). Attempts to deaminate X to give N-3-oxythymine XV failed. Analytical determination of microelements in well waters

Well water analysis was carried out starting with liquid samples which have been evaporated to dryness. The salt deposit crust has ensured an enrichment in microelements which were approximately determined by emission spectroscopy. Once the order of magnitude was established, the exact measurements were carried out based on the following techniques: mass spectrometry, atomic absorption spectrophotometry, activation with slow neutrons, and γ-spectrometry.
