The determination of kinetic isotope effects (KIEs) for different reaction pathways and steps in a complex reaction network, where KIEs may affect the overall reaction in various different ways including dominant and minority pathways or the buildup of a reaction-inhibiting adlayer, is demonstrated for formic acid electrooxidation on a Pt film electrode by quantitative electrochemical in situ IR spectroscopic measurements under controlled mass-transport conditions. The ability to separate effects resulting from different contributions--which is not possible using purely electrochemical kinetic measurements--allows conclusions on the nature of the rate-limiting steps and their transition state in the individual reaction pathways. The potential-independent values of approximately 1.9 for the KIE of formic acid dehydration (CO(ad) formation) in the indirect pathway and approximately 3 for the CO(ad) coverage-normalized KIE of formic acid oxidation to CO2 (direct pathway) indicate that 1) C-H bond breaking is rate-limiting in both reaction steps, 2) the transition states for these reactions are different, and 3) the configurations of the transition states involve rather strong bonds to the transferred D/H species, either in the initial or in the final state, for the direct pathway and--even more pronounced--for formic acid dehydration (CO(ad) formation).  相似文献

The mechanism and kinetics of electrocatalytic oxidation of formic acid at Pt electrodes is discussed in detail based on previous electrochemical in-situ ATR-FTIRS data [Langmuir 22, 10399 (2006) and Angewa. Chem. Int. Ed. 50, 1159 (2011)]. A kinetic model withformic acid adsorption (and probably the simultaneous C-H bond activation) as the rate determining step, which contributes to the majority of reaction current for formic acid oxi-dation, was proposed for the direct pathway. The model simulates well the IR spectroscopic results obtained under conditions where the poisoning effect of carbon monoxide (CO) is negligible and formic acid concentration is below 0.1 mol/L. The kinetic simulation predicts that in the direct pathway formic acid oxidation probably only needs one Pt atom as active site, formate is the site blocking species instead of being the active intermediate. We review in detail the conclusion that formate pathway (with either 1st or 2nd order reaction kinetics) is the direct pathway, possible origins for the discrepancies are pointed out.  相似文献

A mechanistic study of electrocatalytic oxidation of formic acid on Pd in sulfuric and perchloric acids is reported. Surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy in the attenuated total reflection mode (ATR-SEIRAS) shows the adsorption of CO, bridge-bonded formate, bicarbonate, and supporting anions on the electrode surface. Poisoning of the Pd surface by CO, formed by dehydration of formic acid, is very slow and scarcely affects formic acid oxidation. The anions are adsorbed more strongly in the order of (bi)sulfate > bicarbonate > perchlorate, among which the most strongly adsorbed (bi)sulfate considerably suppresses formic acid oxidation in the double layer region. The oxidation is suppressed also at higher potentials in both acids by the oxidation of the Pd surface. Adsorbed formate is detected only when formic acid oxidation is suppressed. The results show that formate is a short-lived reactive intermediate in formic acid oxidation and is hence detected when its decomposition yielding CO(2) is suppressed. The high electrocatalytic activity of Pd can be ascribed to the high tolerance to CO contamination and also high catalytic activity toward formate decomposition.  相似文献

The oxidation of formic acid and carbon monoxide was studied at a gold electrode by a combination of electrochemistry, in situ surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), differential electrochemical mass spectrometry, and first-principles DFT calculations. Comparison of the SERS results and the (field-dependent) DFT calculations strongly suggests that the relevant surface-bonded intermediate during oxidation of formic acid on gold is formate HCOO- ad*. Formate reacts to form carbon dioxide via two pathways: at low potentials, with a nearby water to produce carbon dioxide and a hydronium ion; at higher potentials, with surface-bonded hydroxyl (or oxide) to give carbon dioxide and water. In the former pathway, the rate-determining step is probably related to the reaction of surface-bonded formate with water, as measurements of the reaction order imply a surface almost completely saturated with adsorbate. The potential dependence of the rate of the low-potential pathway is presumably governed by the potential dependence of formate coverage. There is no evidence for CO formation on gold during oxidation of formic acid. The oxidation of carbon monoxide must involve the carboxyhydroxyl intermediate, but SERS measurements do not reveal this intermediate during CO oxidation, most likely because of its low surface coverage, as it is formed after the rate-determining step. Based on inconclusive spectroscopic evidence for the formation of surface-bonded OH at potentials substantially below the surface oxidation region, the question whether surface-bonded carbon monoxide reacts with surface hydroxyl or with water to form carboxyhydroxyl and carbon dioxide remains open. The SERS measurements show the existence of both atop and bridge-bonded CO on gold from two distinguishable low-frequency modes that agree very well with DFT calculations.  相似文献

Surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (SEIRAS) combined with cyclic voltammetry or chronoamperometry has been utilized to examine kinetic and mechanistic aspects of the electrocatalytic oxidation of formic acid on a polycrystalline Pt surface at the molecular scale. Formate is adsorbed on the electrode in a bridge configuration in parallel to the adsorption of linear and bridge CO produced by dehydration of formic acid. A solution-exchange experiment using isotope-labeled formic acids (H(12)COOH and H(13)COOH) reveals that formic acid is oxidized to CO(2) via adsorbed formate and the decomposition (oxidation) of formate to CO(2) is the rate-determining step of the reaction. The adsorption/oxidation of CO and the oxidation/reduction of the electrode surface strongly affect the formic acid oxidation by blocking active sites for formate adsorption and also by retarding the decomposition of adsorbed formate. The interplay of the involved processes also affects the kinetics and complicates the cyclic voltammograms of formic acid oxidation. The complex voltammetric behavior is comprehensively explained at the molecular scale by taking all these effects into account.  相似文献

We present and discuss the results of an in situ IR study on the mechanism and kinetics of formic acid oxidation on a Pt film/Si electrode, performed in an attenuated total reflection (ATR) flow cell configuration under controlled mass transport conditions, which specifically aimed at elucidating the role of the adsorbed bridge-bonded formates in this reaction. Potentiodynamic measurements show a complex interplay between formation and desorption/oxidation of COad and formate species and the total Faradaic current. The notably faster increase of the Faradaic current compared to the coverage of bridge-bonded formate in transient measurements at constant potential, but with different formic acid concentrations, reveals that adsorbed formate decomposition is not rate-limiting in the dominant reaction pathway. If being reactive intermediate at all, the contribution of formate adsorption/decomposition to the reaction current decreases with increasing formic acid concentration, accounting for at most 15% for 0.2 M DCOOH at 0.7 VRHE. The rapid build-up/removal of the formate adlayer and its similarity with acetate or (bi-)sulfate adsorption/desorption indicate that the formate adlayer coverage is dominated by a fast dynamic adsorption-desorption equilibrium with the electrolyte, and that formate desorption is much faster than its decomposition. The results corroborate the proposal of a triple pathway reaction mechanism including an indirect pathway, a formate pathway, and a dominant direct pathway, as presented previously (Chen, Y. X.; et al. Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2006, 45, 981), in which adsorbed formates act as a site-blocking spectator in the dominant pathway rather than as an active intermediate.  相似文献

We have modeled temporal potential oscillations during the electrooxidation of formic acid on platinum on the basis of the experimental results obtained by time-resolved surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (J. Phys. Chem. B 2005, 109, 23509). The model was constructed within the framework of the so-called dual-path mechanism; a direct path via a reactive intermediate and an indirect path via strongly bonded CO formed by dehydration of formic acid. The model differs from earlier ones in the intermediate in the direct path. The reactive intermediate in this model is formate, and the oxidation of formate to CO2 is rate-determining. The reaction rate of the latter process is represented by a second-order rate equation. Simulations using this model well reproduce the experimentally observed oscillation patterns and the temporal changes in the coverages of the adsorbed formate and CO. Most properties of the voltammetric behavior of formic acid, including the potential dependence of adsorbate coverages and a negative differential resistance, are also reproduced.

The adsorption and electro-oxidation of formaldehyde, formic acid and methanol at the Ru(0001) electrode in perchloric acid solution have been studied as a function of temperature, potential and time using in situ FTIR spectroscopy, and the results interpreted in terms of the surface chemistry of the Ru(000 1) electrode and compared to those obtained during our previous studies on the adsorption of CO under the same conditions. It was found that no dissociative adsorption or electro-oxidation of methanol takes place at Ru(0001) at potentials < 900 mV vs. Ag/AgCl, and at all three temperatures employed, 10, 25 and 50 degrees C. However, both formaldehyde and formic acid did undergo dissociative adsorption, even at -200 mV, to form linear (CO(L)) and 3-fold-hollow (COH) binding CO adsorbates. In contrast to the adsorption of CO, it was found that increasing the temperature to 50 degrees C markedly increased the amount of CO adsorbates formed on the Ru(0001) surface from the adsorption of both formaldehyde and formic acid. On increasing the potential, the electro-oxidation of the CO adsorbates to CO2 took place via reaction with the active (1 x 1)-O oxide. Formic acid was detected as a partial oxidation product during formaldehyde electro-oxidation. At all three temperatures employed, it was found that adsorbed CO species were formed from the adsorption of both formic acid and formaldehyde, and were oxidised to CO2 faster than was observed in the experiments involving CO adsorbed from CO(g), suggesting a higher mobility of the CO adsorbates formed from the adsorption of the HCOOH and HCHO. At potentials > 1000 mV, both the oxidation of formic acid to CO2 and the oxidation of formaldehyde to both CO2 and formic acid were significantly increased, and the oxidation of methanol to CO2 and methyl formate was observed, all of which were attributed to the formation of an active RuO2 phase on the Ru(0001) surface.  相似文献

An investigation has been made on the adsorption and decomposition of formic acid on slightly oxidized Nb(110) surface (0/Nb atom ratio = 0.2) using high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS),and a corresponding surface reaction mode is given. At 140 K,formic acid of low exposure on such an Nb(110) surface decomposed to formate, which bonded on Nb in monodentate configuration, simultaneously some formate decomposed to CO,which adsorbed on the surface.Formic acid multilayers formed when the exposure was high. While the temperature was increased to above 190 K,multilayer formic acid desorbed, and the surface was covered with mon-odentate-bonded formate and CO.In the temperature range of 250-300 K,chemisorbed formate changed from monodentate configuration into bridging configuration and CO molecules disappeared. The decomposition of formate at higher temperatures led to the oxidation of Nb.The formate formed in the high exposure case was so stable that it did not decompose even the temperature wa  相似文献

The mechanism of temporal potential oscillations that occur during galvanostatic formic acid oxidation on a Pt electrode has been investigated by time-resolved surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (SEIRAS). Carbon monoxide (CO) and formate were found to adsorb on the surface and change their coverages synchronously with the temporal potential oscillations. Isotopic solution exchange (from H13COOH to H12COOH) and potential step experiments revealed that the oxidation of formic acid proceeds dominantly through adsorbed formate and the decomposition of formate to CO2 is the rate-determining step of the reaction. Adsorbed CO blocks the adsorption of formate and also suppresses the decomposition of formate to CO2, which raises the potential to maintain the applied current. The oxidative removal of CO at a high limiting potential increases the coverage of formate and accelerates the decomposition of formate, resulting in a potential drop and leading to the formation of CO. This cycle repeats itself to give the sustained temporal potential oscillations. The oscillatory dynamics can be explained by using a nonlinear rate equation originally proposed to explain the decomposition of formate and acetate on transition metal surfaces in UHV.  相似文献

Electrocatalytic conversion of formic acid oxidation to CO2 and the related CO2 reduction to formic acid represent a potential closed carbon-loop based on renewable energy. However, formic acid fuel cells are inhibited by the formation of site-blocking species during the formic acid oxidation reaction. Recent studies have elucidated how the binding of carbon and hydrogen on catalyst surfaces promote CO2 reduction towards CO and formic acid. This has also given fundamental insights into the reverse reaction, i.e. the oxidation of formic acid. In this work, simulations on multiple materials have been combined with formic acid oxidation experiments on electrocatalysts to shed light on the reaction and the accompanying catalytic limitations. We correlate data on different catalysts to show that (i) formate, which is the proposed formic acid oxidation intermediate, has similar binding energetics on Pt, Pd and Ag, while Ag does not work as a catalyst, and (ii) *H adsorbed on the surface results in *CO formation and poisoning through a chemical disproportionation step. Using these results, the fundamental limitations can be revealed and progress our understanding of the mechanism of the formic acid oxidation reaction.

Cyclic voltammetry and in situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy were employed to study the electrocatalytic properties of a Pt electrode modified with adatoms of antimony (Sb) or sulfur (S) for 1,3-butanediol (1,3-BD) oxidation. The results demonstrated the possibility of manipulating the reaction pathways involved in 1,3-BD oxidation through chemical modification of the Pt electrode surface. Both Sb and S adatoms (Sb(ad) and S(ad)) can inhibit the dissociative reaction of 1,3-BD into CO, which is the main source of self-poisoning in electrocatalysis of small organic molecules. On Pt electrodes modified with a high coverage of Sb(ad) (Pt/Sb(ad)) the onset oxidation potential of 1,3-BD has been significantly decreased, which is attributed to the fact that the oxidation of Sb(ad) occurs at lower potentials than that of the Pt surface. In situ FTIR results illustrated that, although at potentials below 0.5 V (vs a saturated calomel electrode), at which the Sb(ad) is stable on the Pt electrode surface, both carbonyl and CO2 species have been observed, the principal oxidation products of 1,3-BD are carbonyl species. Such results indicate that the reaction is mainly the dehydrogenation of 1,3-BD molecules. However, at potentials above 0.5 V the proportion of CO2 species in the oxidation products increases quickly, implying that the reaction has turned to the breakage of C-C bonds in 1,3-BD molecules and the subsequent oxidation of the cleaved fragments. In contrast with the cases of 1,3-BD oxidation on Pt and Pt/Sb(ad) electrodes, the reaction of 1,3-BD oxidation on a Pt electrode modified with S adatoms (Pt/S(ad)) is oriented completely to the production of carbonyl species when electrode potentials are below 0.9 V, though the reaction activity is relatively low. When the electrode potential is increased above 0.9 V, the intensity of the CO2 IR band in the FTIR spectra increases rapidly, corresponding to a fast oxidation of 1,3-BD on surface Pt sites recovered by the oxidation and desorption of S(ad) from the Pt surface.  相似文献

The catalytic dehydration reaction processes of formic acid on a TiO2(110) surface at 350 K have been studied to visualize reaction intermediates and their dynamic behaviors by scanning tunneling microscopy. Three types of configurations of adsorbed formates on the surface were identified by their shapes and positions in STM images. Successive STM observations revealed transformations among the three configurations, i.e., bridge formate on a 5-fold coordinated Ti4+ row, bridge formate on an oxygen vacancy site with an oxygen atom of formate and on a 5-fold coordinated Ti4+ ion and with the other formate oxygen atom, and a monodentate formate on an oxygen vacancy site with an oxygen atom of formate. The decomposition of the monodentate formate to carbon monoxide and hydroxyl was also imaged, which is a rate-determining step in the catalytic dehydration of formic acid. Combined with first-principle DFT calculations, the overall reaction processes of the catalytic dehydration of formic acid on the surface have been elucidated. Oxygen vacancies on the surface that can be produced by dehydration of two hydroxyls in situ under the catalytic reaction conditions are essential for the reaction.  相似文献

Reaction pathways during CO(2) hydrogenation catalyzed by the Ru dihydride complex [Ru(dmpe)(2)H(2)] (dmpe=Me(2)PCH(2)CH(2)PMe(2)) have been studied by DFT calculations and by IR and NMR spectroscopy up to 120 bar in toluene at 300 K. CO(2) and formic acid readily inserted into or reacted with the complex to form formates. Two formate complexes, cis-[Ru(dmpe)(2)(OCHO)(2)] and trans-[Ru(dmpe)(2)H(OCHO)], were formed at low CO(2) pressure (<5 bar). The latter occurred exclusively when formic acid reacted with the complex. A RuHHOCHO dihydrogen-bonded complex of the trans form was identified at H(2) partial pressure higher than about 50 bar. The trans form of the complex is suggested to play a pivotal role in the reaction pathway. Potential-energy profiles along possible reaction paths have been investigated by static DFT calculations, and lower activation-energy profiles via the trans route were confirmed. The H(2) insertion has been identified as the rate-limiting step of the overall reaction. The high energy of the transition state for H(2) insertion is attributed to the elongated Ru--O bond. The H(2) insertion and the subsequent formation of formic acid proceed via Ru(eta(2)-H(2))-like complexes, in which apparently formate ion and Ru(+) or Ru(eta(2)-H(2))(+) interact. The bond properties of involved Ru complexes were characterized by natural bond orbital analysis, and the highly ionic characters of various complexes and transition states are shown. The stability of the formate ion near the Ru center likely plays a decisive role for catalytic activity. Removal of formic acid from the dihydrogen-bonded complex (RuHHOCHO) seems to be crucial for catalytic efficiency, since formic acid can easily react with the complex to regenerate the original formate complex. Important aspects for the design of highly active catalytic systems are discussed.  相似文献

The aerobic oxidation of methanol to formic acid catalyzed by Au(20)(-) has been investigated quantum chemically using density functional theory with the M06 functional. Possible reaction pathways are examined taking account of full structure relaxation of the Au(20)(-) cluster. The proposed reaction mechanism consists of three elementary steps: (1) formation of formaldehyde from methoxy species activated by a superoxo-like anion on the gold cluster; (2) nucleophilic addition by the hydroxyl group of a hydroperoxyl-like complex to formaldehyde resulting in a hemiacetal intermediate; and (3) formation of formic acid by hydrogen transfer from the hemiacetal intermediate to atomic oxygen attached to the gold cluster. A comparison of the computed energetics of various elementary steps indicates that C-H bond dissociation of the methoxy species leading to formation of formaldehyde is the rate-determining step. A possible reaction pathway involving single-step hydrogen abstraction, a concerted mechanism, is also discussed. The stabilities of reactants, intermediates and transition state structures are governed by the coordination number of the gold atoms, charge distribution, cooperative effect and structural distortion, which are the key parameters for understanding the relationship between the structure of the gold cluster and catalytic activity in the aerobic oxidation of alcohols.  相似文献

The mechanism of the reverse water-gas shift reaction (CO(2) + H(2) → CO + H(2)O) was investigated using the 3d transition metal complexes L'M (M = Fe, Mn, and Co, L' = parent β-diketiminate). The thermodynamics and reaction barriers of the elementary reaction pathways were studied with the B3LYP density functional and two different basis sets: 6-311+G(d) and aug-cc-pVTZ. Plausible reactants, intermediates, transition states, and products were modeled, with different conformers and multiplicities for each identified. Different reaction pathways and side reactions were also considered. Reaction Gibbs free energies and activation energies for all steps were determined for each transition metal. Calculations indicate that the most desirable mechanism involves mostly monometallic complexes. Among the three catalysts modeled, the Mn complex shows the most favorable catalytic properties. Considering the individual reaction barriers, the Fe complex shows the lowest barrier for activation of CO(2).  相似文献

The heterogeneous uptake and reactivity of formic acid (HCOOH), a common gas-phase organic acid found in the environment, on calcium carbonate (CaCO(3)) particles have been investigated using a Knudsen cell reactor, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). FTIR measurements show that the adsorption of formic acid on the surface of calcium carbonate results in the formation of calcium formate. Besides calcium formate, carbonic acid is also a reaction product under dry conditions (<1% RH). Under dry conditions and at low pressures, the initial uptake coefficient of formic acid on CaCO(3) particles is measured to be 3 +/- 1 x 10(-3) and decreases as the surface saturates with adsorbed products. The maximum surface coverage of formic acid under dry conditions is determined to be (3 +/- 1)x 10(14) molecules cm(-2). Under humidified conditions (RH >10%), adsorbed water on the surface of the carbonate particles participates in the surface reactivity of these particles, which results in the enhanced uptake kinetics and extent of reaction of this organic acid on CaCO(3) as well as opens up several new reaction pathways. These reaction pathways include: (i) the water-assisted dissociation of carbonic acid to CO(2) and H(2)O and (ii) the formation of calcium formate islands and crystallites, as evident by SEM images. The results presented here show that adsorbed water plays a potentially important role in the surface chemistry of gas-phase organic acids on calcium carbonate particles.  相似文献
