The dynamical behavior of two coupled parametrically excited van der pol oscillators is investigated in this paper. Based on the averaged equations, the transition boundaries are sought to divide the parameter space into a set of regions, which correspond to different types of solutions. Two types of periodic solutions may bifurcate from the initial equilibrium. The periodic solutions may lose their stabilities via a generalized static bifurcation, which leads to stable quasi-periodic solutions, or via a generalized Hopf bifurcation, which leads to stable 3D tori. The instabilities of both the quasi-periodic solutions and the 3D tori may directly lead to chaos with the variation of the parameters. Two symmetric chaotic attractors are observed and for certain values of the parameters, the two attractors may interact with each other to form another enlarged chaotic attractor.

The bifurcations and chaotic dynamics of parametrically and externally excited suspended cables are investigated in this paper. The equations of motion governing such systems contain quadratic and cubic nonlinearities, which may result in two-to-one and one-to-one internal resonances. The Galerkin procedure is introduced to simplify the governing equations of motion to ordinary differential equations with two-degree-of-freedom. The case of one-to-one internal resonance between the modes of suspended cables, primary resonant excitation, and principal parametric excitation of suspended cables is considered. Using the method of multiple scales, a parametrically and externally excited system is transformed to the averaged equations. A pseudo arclength scheme is used to trace the branches of the equilibrium solutions and an investigation of the eigenvalues of the Jacobian matrix is used to assess their stability. The equilibrium solutions experience pitchfork, saddle-node, and Hopf bifurcations. A detailed bifurcation analysis of the dynamic (periodic and chaotic) solutions of the averaged equations is presented. Five branches of dynamic solutions are found. Three of these branches that emerge from two Hopf bifurcations and the other two are isolated. The two Hopf bifurcation points, one is supercritical Hopf bifurcation point and another is primary Hopf bifurcation point. The limit cycles undergo symmetry-breaking, cyclic-fold, and period-doubling bifurcations, whereas the chaotic attractors undergo attractor-merging, boundary crises. Simultaneous occurrence of the limit cycle and chaotic attractors, homoclinic orbits, homoclinic explosions and hyperchaos are also observed.

Three-to-One Internal Resonances in Hinged-Clamped Beams

The nonlinear planar response of a hinged-clamped beam to a primary excitation of either its first mode or its second mode is investigated. The analysis accounts for mid-plane stretching, a static axial load and a restraining spring at one end, and modal damping. For a range of axial loads, the second natural frequency is approximately three times the first natural frequency and hence the first and second modes may interact due to a three-to-one internal resonance. The method of multiple scales is used to attack directly the governing nonlinear partial-differential equation and derive two sets of four first-order nonlinear ordinary-differential equations describing the modulation of the amplitudes and phases of the first two modes in the case of primary resonance of either the first or the second mode. Periodic motions and periodically and chaotically modulated motions of the beam are determined by investigating the equilibrium and dynamic solutions of the modulation equations. For the case of primary resonance of the first mode, only two-mode solutions are possible, whereas for the case of primary resonance of the second mode, single- and two-mode solutions are possible. The two-mode equilibrium solutions of the modulation equations may undergo a supercritical or a subcritical Hopf bifurcation, depending on the magnitude of the axial load. A shooting technique is used to calculate limit cycles of the modulation equations and Floquet theory is used to ascertain their stability. The limit cycles correspond to periodically modulated motions of the beam. The limit cycles are found to undergo cyclic-fold bifurcations and period-doubling bifurcations, leading to chaos. The chaotic attractors may undergo boundary crises, resulting in the destruction of the chaotic attractors and their basins of attraction.

We consider an autoparametric system consisting of an oscillator coupled with an externally excited subsystem. The oscillator and the subsystem are in one-to-one internal resonance. The excited subsystem is in primary resonance. The method of second-order averaging is used to obtain a set of autonomous equations of the second-order approximations to the externally excited system with autoparametric resonance. The Šhilnikov-type homoclinic orbits and chaotic dynamics of the averaged equations are studied in detail. The global bifurcation analysis indicates that there exist the heteroclinic bifurcations and the Šhilnikov-type homoclinic orbits in the averaged equations. The results obtained above mean the existence of the amplitude-modulated chaos for the Smale horseshoe sense in the externally excited system with autoparametric resonance. Furthermore, a detailed bifurcation analysis of the dynamic (periodic and chaotic) solutions of the averaged equations is presented. Nine branches of dynamic solutions are found. Two of these branches emerge from two Hopf bifurcations and the other seven are isolated. The limit cycles undergo symmetry-breaking, cyclic-fold and period-doubling bifurcations, whereas the chaotic attractors undergo attractor-merging and boundary crises. Simultaneous occurrence of the limit cycle and chaotic attractors, homoclinic orbits, intermittency chaos and homoclinic explosions are also observed.

In this effort, a six-degree-of-freedom (DOF) model is presented for the study of a machine-tool spindle-bearing system. The dynamics of machine-tool spindle system supported by ball bearings can be described by a set of second order nonlinear differential equations with piecewise stiffness and damping due to the bearing clearance. To investigate the effect of bearing clearance, bifurcations and routes to chaos of this nonsmooth system, numerical simulation is carried out. Numerical results show when the inner race touches the bearing ball with a low speed, grazing bifurcation occurs. The solutions of this system evolve from quasi-periodic to chaotic orbit, from period doubled orbit to periodic orbit, and from periodic orbit to quasi-periodic orbit through grazing bifurcations. In addition, the tori doubling process to chaos which usually occurs in the impact system is also observed in this spindle-bearing system.

The weakly nonlinear resonant response of an orthogonal double pendulum to planar harmonic motions of the point of suspension is investigated. The two pendulums in the double pendulum are confined to two orthogonal planes. For nearly equal length of the two pendulums, the system exhibits 1:1 internal resonance. The method of averaging is used to derive a set of four first order autonomous differential equations in the amplitude and phase variables. Constant solutions of the amplitude and phase equations are studied as a function of physical parameters of interest using the local bifurcation theory. It is shown that, for excitation restricted in either plane, there may be as many as six pitchfork bifurcation points at which the nonplanar solutions bifurcate from the planar solutions. These nonplanar motions can become unstable by a saddle-node or a Hopf bifurcation, giving rise to a new branch of constant solutions or limit cycle solutions, respectively. The dynamics of the amplitude equations in parameter regions of the Hopf bifurcations is then explored using direct numerical integration. The results indicate a complicated amplitude dynamics including multiple limit cycle solutions, period-doubling route to chaos, and sudden disappearance of chaotic attractors.

This paper presents a detailed analysis on the dynamics of a delayed oscillator with negative damping and delayed feedback control. Firstly, a linear stability analysis for the trivial equilibrium is given. Then, the direction of Hopf bifurcation and stability of periodic solutions bifurcating from trivial equilibrium are determined by using the normal form theory and center manifold theorem. It shows that with properly chosen delay and gain in the delayed feedback path, this controlled delayed system may have stable equilibrium, or periodic solutions, or quasi-periodic solutions, or coexisting stable solutions. In addition, the controlled system may exhibit period-doubling bifurcation which eventually leads to chaos. Finally, some new interesting phenomena, such as the coexistence of periodic orbits and chaotic attractors, have been observed. The results indicate that delayed feedback control can make systems with state delay produce more complicated dynamics.

Nonlinear flexural vibrations of a rectangular plate with uniform stretching are studied for the case when it is harmonically excited with forces acting normal to the midplane of the plate. The physical phenomena of interest here arise when the plate has two distinct linear modes of vibration with nearly the same natural frequency. It is shown that, depending on the spatial distribution of the external forces, the plate can undergo harmonic motions either in one of the two individual modes or in a mixed-mode. Stable single-mode and mixed-mode solutions can also coexist over a wide range in the amplitudes and frequency of excitation. For low damping levels, the presence of Hopf bifurcations in the mixed-mode response leads to complicated amplitude-modulated dynamics including period doubling bifurcations, chaos, coexistence of multiple chaotic motions, and crisis, whereby the chaotic attractors suddenly disappear and the plate resumes small amplitude harmonic motions in a single-mode. Numerical results are presented specifically for 1 : 1 resonance in the (1, 2) and (3, 1) plate modes.

This paper considers an ensemble of Chua oscillators bidirectionally coupled in a ring geometry where locally coupled circuits form a closed loop of signal transmission. The spontaneous dynamics of this system is studied numerically for different coupling strength. A transition from periodic to chaotic regimes is observed when the coupling decreases. In the former situation, characterized by high coupling, all the circuits oscillate with pseudo-sinusoidal dynamics on periodic attractors; in the latter they evolve on the same-type of chaotic attractor with a progression of the dynamics from the Chua's spiral to the double scroll as the coupling decreases. The emerging global dynamics is markedly different in the two cases and a phase transition between highly ordered and highly disordered global dynamics is observed. Synchronization and traveling waves moving along the ring are identified in the non-chaotic regime, while spatio-temporal chaos results for very low coupling. Complex patterns formation appears at the “edge of chaos”, for a small couplings interval after the transition between these two regimes.

The Hopf and double Hopf bifurcations analysis of asymmetrical rotating shafts with stretching nonlinearity are investigated. The shaft is simply supported and is composed of viscoelastic material. The rotary inertia and gyroscopic effect are considered, but, shear deformation is neglected. To consider the viscoelastic behavior of the shaft, the Kelvin–Voigt model is used. Hopf bifurcations occur due to instability caused by internal damping. To analyze the dynamics of the system in the vicinity of Hopf bifurcations, the center manifold theory is utilized. The standard normal forms of Hopf bifurcations for symmetrical and asymmetrical shafts are obtained. It is shown that the symmetrical shafts have double zero eigenvalues in the absence of external damping, but asymmetrical shafts do not have. The asymmetrical shaft in the absence of external damping has a saddle point, therefore the system is unstable. Also, for symmetrical and asymmetrical shafts, in the presence of external damping at the critical speeds, supercritical Hopf bifurcations occur. The amplitude of periodic solution due to supercritical Hopf bifurcations for symmetrical and asymmetrical shafts for the higher modes would be different, due to shaft asymmetry. Consequently, the effect of shaft asymmetry in the higher modes is considerable. Also, the amplitude of periodic solutions for symmetrical shafts with rotary inertia effect is higher than those of without one. In addition, the dynamic behavior of the system in the vicinity of double Hopf bifurcation is investigated. It is seen that in this case depending on the damping and rotational speed, the sink, source, or saddle equilibrium points occur in the system.

In this paper, the Hopf bifurcations and limit cycle oscillations (LCOs) of an airfoil with cubic nonlinearity in supersonic\hypersonic flow are investigated. The harmonic balance method and multivariable Floquet theory are applied to analyze the LCOs of the airfoil. Four distinct cases of the LCOs response are detected in this system: (I) supercritical Hopf bifurcation, (II) a single subcritical Hopf bifurcation, (III) two subcritical Hopf bifurcations, and (IV) no Hopf bifurcation. Furthermore, the parameter variations domains separating the supercritical and subcritical Hopf bifurcations are presented using singularity theory.

A generalized Sprott C system with only two stable equilibria is investigated by detailed theoretical analysis as well as dynamic simulation, including some basic dynamical properties, Lyapunov exponent spectra, fractal dimension, bifurcations, and routes to chaos. In the parameter space where the equilibria of the system are both asymptotically stable, chaotic attractors coexist with period attractors and stable equilibria. Moreover, the existence of singularly degenerate heteroclinic cycles for a suitable choice of the parameters is investigated. Periodic solutions and chaotic attractors can be found when these cycles disappear.

In this paper the non-linear dynamics of a state-dependent delay model of the turning process is analyzed. The size of the regenerative delay is determined not only by the rotation of the workpiece, but also by the vibrations of the tool. A numerical continuation technique is developed that can be used to follow the periodic orbits of a system with implicitly defined state-dependent delays. The numerical analysis of the model reveals that the criticality of the Hopf bifurcation depends on the feed rate. This is in contrast to simpler constant delay models where the criticality does not change. For small feed rates, subcritical Hopf bifurcations are found, similar to the constant delay models. In this case, periodic orbits coexist with the stable stationary cutting state and so there is the potential for large amplitude chatter and bistability. For large feed rates, the Hopf bifurcation becomes supercritical for a range of spindle speeds. In this case, stable periodic orbits instead coexist with the unstable stationary cutting state, removing the possibility of large amplitude chatter. Thus, the state-dependent delay in the model has a kind of stabilizing effect, since the supercritical case is more favorable from a practical viewpoint than the subcritical one.

In this paper, unstable dynamics is considered for the models of vibro-impact systems with linear differential equations coupled to an impact map. To provide a skeleton for the organization of chaotic attractors, we propose a method for detecting unstable periodic orbits embedded in chaotic attractors through a combination of unconstrained optimization technique and Poincaré map. Three numerical examples from different vibro-impact models demonstrate that the strategy can efficiently detect unstable periodic orbits in chaotic attractors. In order to explore the mechanism responsible for the creation of multi-dimensional tori attractors, we also present another method to detect unstable quasiperiodic orbits embedded multi-dimensional tori attractors by examining a specially transient time series. The upper bound and lower bound of the transient time series (in the Poincaré map) can be obtained by analyzing transient Lyapunov exponent and transient Lyapunov dimension. Some examples verify the effectiveness of the numerical algorithm.

We have performed a numerical study of the dynamics of a harmonically forced sliding oscillator with two degrees of freedom and dry friction. The study of the four-dimensional dynamical system corresponding to the two non-linear motion equations can be reduced, in this case, to the study of a three-dimensional Poincaré map. The behaviour of the system has been investigated calculating bifurcation diagrams, time series, periodic and chaotic attractors and basins of attraction. Furthermore, a systematic study of the stability of periodic solutions and their bifurcations has been carried out applying the Floquet theory. The results show rich dynamics being very sensitive to the changes in forcing amplitudes (control parameter), where periodic and chaotic states alternatively appear. It is shown how the system exhibits different types of bifurcational phenomena (saddle-node, symmetry-breaking, period-doubling cascades and intermittent transitions to chaos) into relatively narrow intervals of the control parameter. Moreover, a collection of chaotic attractors was computed to show the evolution of the chaotic regime. Finally, basins of attraction were calculated. In all the cases studied, the basins exhibit fractal structure boundaries and, when more of two attractors are coexisting, we have found Wada basin boundaries.

引入慢变周期激励项取代其中一个开折参数, 随慢变激励项的变化, 会存在两类轨迹访问子区域途径, 产生周期Hopf/LPC, Hopf/LPC/Hopf/LPC, fold/LPC/Hopf/Homoclinic和fold/LPC 4种簇发振荡类型.

Nonlinear planar oscillations of suspended cables subjected to external excitations with three-to-one internal resonances are investigated. At first, the Galerkin method is used to discretize the governing nonlinear integral–partial-differential equation. Then, the method of multiple scales is applied to obtain the modulation equations in the case of primary resonance. The equilibrium solutions, the periodic solutions and chaotic solutions of the modulation equations are also investigated. The Newton–Raphson method and the pseudo-arclength path-following algorithm are used to obtain the frequency/force–response curves. The supercritical Hopf bifurcations are found in these curves. Choosing these bifurcations as the initial points and applying the shooting method and the pseudo-arclength path-following algorithm, the periodic solution branches are obtained. At the same time, the Floquet theory is used to determine the stability of the periodic solutions. Numerical simulations are used to illustrate the cascades of period-doubling bifurcations leading to chaos. At last, the nonlinear responses of the two-degree-of-freedom model are investigated.
