Let \({f(x)=(x-a_1)\cdots (x-a_m)}\), where a 1, . . . , a m are distinct rational integers. In 1908 Schur raised the question whether f(x) ± 1 is irreducible over the rationals. One year later he asked whether \({(f(x))^{2^k}+1}\) is irreducible for every k ≥ 1. In 1919 Pólya proved that if \({P(x)\in\mathbb{Z}[x]}\) is of degree m and there are m rational integer values a for which 0 < |P(a)| < 2?N N! where \({N=\lceil m/2\rceil}\), then P(x) is irreducible. A great number of authors have published results of Schur-type or Pólya-type afterwards. Our paper contains various extensions, generalizations and improvements of results from the literature. To indicate some of them, in Theorem 3.1 a Pólya-type result is established when the ground ring is the ring of integers of an arbitrary imaginary quadratic number field. In Theorem 4.1 we describe the form of the factors of polynomials of the shape h(x) f(x) + c, where h(x) is a polynomial and c is a constant such that |c| is small with respect to the degree of h(x) f(x). We obtain irreducibility results for polynomials of the form g(f(x)) where g(x) is a monic irreducible polynomial of degree ≤ 3 or of CM-type. Besides elementary arguments we apply methods and results from algebraic number theory, interpolation theory and diophantine approximation.  相似文献

Assume that we observe a stationary Gaussian process X(t), \({t \in [-r, T]}\) , which satisfies the affine stochastic delay differential equation
$d X(t) = \int\limits_{[-r,0]}X(t+u)\, a_\vartheta (du)\,dt +dW(t), \quad t\ge 0,$
where W(t), t ≥ 0, is a standard Wiener process independent of X(t), \({t\in [-r, 0]}\) , and \({a_\vartheta}\) is a finite signed measure on [?r, 0], \({\vartheta\in\Theta}\) . The parameter \({\vartheta}\) is unknown and has to be estimated based on the observation. In this paper we consider the case where \({\Theta=(\vartheta_0,\vartheta_1)}\) , \({-\infty\,<\,\vartheta_0 <0 \,<\,\vartheta_1\,<\,\infty}\) , and the measures \({a_\vartheta}\) are of the form
$a_\vartheta = a+b_\vartheta-b,$
where a and b are finite signed measure on [?r, 0] and \({b_\vartheta}\) is the translate of b by \({\vartheta}\) . We study the limit behaviour of the normalized likelihoods
$Z_{T,\vartheta}(u) = \frac{dP_T^{\vartheta+\delta_T u}}{dP_T^\vartheta}$
as T→ ∞, where \({P_T^\vartheta}\) is the distribution of the observation if the true value of the parameter is \({\vartheta}\) . A necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a rescaling function δ T such that \({Z_{T,\vartheta}(u)}\) converges in distribution to an appropriate nondegenerate limiting function \({Z_{\vartheta}(u)}\) is found. It turns out that then the limiting function \({Z_{\vartheta}(u)}\) is of the form
$Z_\vartheta(u)=\exp\left(B^H(u) - E[B^H(u)]^2/2\right),$
where \({H\in[1/2,1]}\) and B H (u), \({u\in\mathbb{R}}\) , is a fractional Brownian motion with index H, and δ T  = T ?1/(2H) ?(T) with a slowly varying function ?. Every \({H\in[1/2,1]}\) may occur in this framework. As a consequence, the asymptotic behaviour of maximum likelihood and Bayes estimators is found.

We consider quadratic functions f that satisfy the additional equation y2 f(x) =  x2 f(y) for the pairs \({ (x,y) \in \mathbb{R}^2}\) that fulfill the condition P(x, y) =  0 for some fixed polynomial P of two variables. If P(x, y) =  axbyc with \({ a , b , c \in \mathbb{R}}\) and \({(a^2 + b^2)c \neq 0}\) or P(x,y) =  x n ? y with a natural number \({n \geq 2}\), we prove that f(x) =  f(1) x2 for all \({x \in \mathbb{R}}\). Some related problems, admitting quadratic functions generated by derivations, are considered as well.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with the following periodic Hamiltonian elliptic system
$$\left \{\begin{array}{l}-\Delta u+V(x)u=g(x,v)\, {\rm in }\,\mathbb{R}^N,\\-\Delta v+V(x)v=f(x,u)\, {\rm in }\, \mathbb{R}^N,\\ u(x)\to 0\, {\rm and}\,v(x)\to0\, {\rm as }\,|x|\to\infty,\end{array}\right.$$
where the potential V is periodic and 0 lies in a gap of the spectrum of ?Δ + V, f(x, t) and g(x, t) depend periodically on x and are superlinear but subcritical in t at infinity. By establishing a variational setting, existence of a ground state solution and multiple solution for odd f and g are obtained.

This paper is concerned with the existence of positive solutions of the third-order boundary value problem with full nonlinearity
$$\begin{aligned} \left\{ \begin{array}{lll} u'''(t)&{}=f(t,u(t),u'(t),u''(t)),\quad t\in [0,1],\\ u(0)&{}=u'(1)=u''(1)=0, \end{array}\right. \end{aligned}$$
where \(f:[0,1]\times \mathbb {R}^+\times \mathbb {R}^+\times \mathbb {R}^-\rightarrow \mathbb {R}^+\) is continuous. Under some inequality conditions on f as |(xyz)| small or large enough, the existence results of positive solution are obtained. These inequality conditions allow that f(txyz) may be superlinear, sublinear or asymptotically linear on x, y and z as \(|(x,y,z)|\rightarrow 0\) and \(|(x,y,z)|\rightarrow \infty \). For the superlinear case as \(|(x,y,z)|\rightarrow \infty \), a Nagumo-type growth condition is presented to restrict the growth of f on y and z. Our discussion is based on the fixed point index theory in cones.

Let R be a prime ring with extended centroid C, λ a nonzero left ideal of R and f (X 1, . . . , X t ) a nonzero multilinear polynomial over C. Suppose that d and δ are derivations of R such that
$d(f(x_{1},\ldots,x_{t}))f(x_{1},\ldots,x_{t})-f(x_{1},\ldots,x_{t})\delta(f(x_{1},\ldots,x_{t}))\in C$
for all \({x_1,\ldots,x_t\in\lambda}\). Then either d = 0 and λ δ(λ) = 0 or λ C = RCe for some idempotent e in the socle of RC and one of the following holds:
  1. (1)
    f (X1, . . . , X t ) is central-valued on eRCe;

  2. (2)
    λ(d + δ)(λ) = 0 and f (X1, . . . , X t )2 is central-valued on eRCe;

  3. (3)
    char R = 2 and eRCe satisfies st 4(X 1, X 2, X 3, X 4), the standard polynomial identity of degree 4.

In this paper, we consider solving the BTTB system \({\cal T}_{m,n}[f] {\bf{x}} = {\bf{b}}\) by the preconditioned conjugate gradient (PCG) method, where \({\cal T}_{m,n}[f]\) denotes the m × m block Toeplitz matrix with n × n Toeplitz blocks (BTTB) generated by a (2π, 2π)-periodic continuous function f(x, y). We propose using the BTTB matrix \({\cal T}_{m,n}[1/f]\) to precondition the BTTB system and prove that only O(m)?+?O(n) eigenvalues of the preconditioned matrix \({\cal T}_{m,n}[1/f] {\cal T}_{m,n}[f]\) are not around 1 under the condition that f(x, y)?>?0. We then approximate 1/f(x, y) by a bivariate trigonometric polynomial, which can be obtained in O(m n log(m n)) operations by using the fast Fourier transform technique. Numerical results show that our BTTB preconditioner is more efficient than block circulant preconditioners.  相似文献

In this paper we investigate the existence of permutation polynomials of the form x d  + L(x) on \({{\mathbb{F}_{2^n}}}\) , where \({{L(x)\in\mathbb{F}_{2^n}[x]}}\) is a linearized polynomial. It is shown that for some special d with gcd(d, 2 n ?1) > 1, x d  + L(x) is nerve a permutation on \({{\mathbb{F}_{2^n}}}\) for any linearized polynomial \({{L(x)\in\mathbb{F}_{2^n}[x]}}\) . For the Gold functions \({{x^{2^i+1}}}\) , it is shown that \({{x^{2^i+1}+L(x)}}\) is a permutation on \({{\mathbb{F}_{2^n}}}\) if and only if n is odd and \({{L(x)=\alpha^{2^i}x+\alpha x^{2^i}}}\) for some \({{\alpha\in\mathbb{F}_{2^n}^{*}}}\) . We also disprove a conjecture in (Macchetti Addendum to on the generalized linear equivalence of functions over finite fields. Cryptology ePrint Archive, Report2004/347, 2004) in a very simple way. At last some interesting results concerning permutation polynomials of the form x ?1 + L(x) are given.  相似文献

In this paper we present a new algorithm for solving polynomial equations based on the Taylor series of the inverse function of a polynomial, f P (y). The foundations of the computing of such series have been previously developed by the authors in some recent papers, proceeding as follows: given a polynomial function \(y=P(x)=a_0+a_1x+\cdots+a_mx^m\), with \(a_i \in \mathcal{R}, 0 \leq i \leq m\), and a real number u so that P′(u)?≠?0, we have got an analytic function f P (y) that satisfies x?=?f P (P(x)) around x?=?u. Besides, we also introduce a new proof (completely different) of the theorems involves in the construction of f P (y), which provide a better radius of convergence of its Taylor series, and a more general perspective that could allow its application to other kinds of equations, not only polynomials. Finally, we illustrate with some examples how f P (y) could be used for solving polynomial systems. This question has been already treated by the authors in preceding works in a very complex and hard way, that we want to overcome by using the introduced algorithm in this paper.  相似文献

Let β > 1 and let m > β be an integer. Each \({x\in I_\beta:=[0,\frac{m-1}{\beta-1}]}\) can be represented in the form
$$x=\sum_{k=1}^\infty \epsilon_k\beta^{-k},$$
where \({\epsilon_k\in\{0,1,\ldots,m-1\}}\) for all k (a β-expansion of x). It is known that a.e. \({x\in I_\beta}\) has a continuum of distinct β-expansions. In this paper we prove that if β is a Pisot number, then for a.e. x this continuum has one and the same growth rate. We also link this rate to the Lebesgue-generic local dimension for the Bernoulli convolution parametrized by β. When \({\beta < \frac{1+\sqrt5}2}\), we show that the set of β-expansions grows exponentially for every internal x.

Let R be a 6-torsion-free prime ring and let \({D : R \rightarrow R}\) be an additive mapping satisfying the relation 2D(x 4) = D(x 3)x + x 3 D(x) + D(x)x 3 + xD(x 3) for all \({x \in R}\) . The purpose of this paper is to show that D is a derivation. This result is related to a classical result of Herstein, which states that any Jordan derivation on a 2-torsion-free prime ring is a derivation.  相似文献

One of the classical problems concerns the class of analytic functions f on the open unit disk |z| < 1 which have finite Dirichlet integral Δ(1, f), where
$$\Delta(r ,f) = \iint_{|z| < r} |f' (z)| ^ 2 \, {\rm d} x {\rm d}y \quad (0 < r \leq 1)$$
The class \({\mathcal{S} ^*(A,B)}\) of normalized functions f analytic in |z| < 1 and satisfies the subordination condition \({zf'(z)/f(z)\prec (1+Az)/(1+Bz)}\) in |z| < 1 and for some \({-1\leq B\leq 0}\) , \({A \in \mathbb{C}}\) with \({A\neq B}\) , has been studied extensively. In this paper, we solve the extremal problem of determining the value of
$$\max_{f\in \mathcal{S}^*(A,B)}\Delta(r,z/f)$$
as a function of r. This settles the question raised by Ponnusamy and Wirths (Ann Acad Sci Fenn Ser AI Math 39:721–731, 2014). One of the particular cases includes solution to a conjecture of Yamashita which was settled recently by Obradovi? et al. (Comput Methods Funct Theory 13:479–492, 2013).

Let X and Y be two Banach spaces, and f: XY be a standard ε-isometry for some ε ≥ 0. In this paper, by using a recent theorem established by Cheng et al. (2013–2015), we show a sufficient condition guaranteeing the following sharp stability inequality of f: There is a surjective linear operator T: YX of norm one so that
$$\left\| {Tf(x) - x} \right\| \leqslant 2\varepsilon , for all x \in X.$$
As its application, we prove the following statements are equivalent for a standard ε-isometry f: XY:
  1. (i)
    lim inf t→∞ dist(ty, f(X))/|t| < 1/2, for all yS Y ;

  2. (ii)
    \(\tau(f)\equiv sup_{y\epsilon S_{Y}}\) lim inf t→∞dist(ty, f(X))/|t| = 0;

  3. (iii)
    there is a surjective linear isometry U: XY so that
    $$\left\| {f(x) - Ux} \right\| \leqslant 2\varepsilon , for all x \in X.$$

A stable set in a graph G is a set of pairwise non-adjacent vertices, and the stability number α(G) is the maximum size of a stable set in G. The independence polynomial of G is
$I(G; x) = s_{0}+s_{1}x+s_{2}x^{2}+\cdots+s_{\alpha}x^{\alpha},\alpha=\alpha(G),$
where s k equals the number of stable sets of cardinality k in G (Gutman and Harary [11]).
Unlike the matching polynomial, the independence polynomial of a graph can have non-real roots. It is known that the polynomial I(G; x) has only real roots whenever (a) α(G) = 2 (Brown et al. [4]), (b) G is claw-free (Chudnowsky and Symour [6]). Brown et al. [3] proved that given a well-covered graph G, one can define a well-covered graph H such that G is a subgraph of H, α(G) = α(H), and I(H; x) has all its roots simple and real.In this paper, we show that starting from a graph G whose I(G; x) has only real roots, one can build an infinite family of graphs, some being well-covered, whose independence polynomials have only real roots (and, sometimes, are also palindromic).  相似文献

Using the periodic unfolding method of Cioranescu, Damlamian and Griso, we study the homogenization for equations of the form
$-{\rm div}\,\,d_\varepsilon=f,\,\,{\rm with}\,\,\left(\nabla u_{\varepsilon , \delta }(x),d_{\varepsilon , \delta }(x)\right) \in A_\varepsilon(x)$
in a perforated domain with holes of size \({\varepsilon \delta }\) periodically distributed in the domain, where \({A_\varepsilon }\) is a function whose values are maximal monotone graphs (on R N ). Two different unfolding operators are involved in such a geometric situation. Under appropriate growth and coercivity assumptions, if the corresponding two sequences of unfolded maximal monotone graphs converge in the graph sense to the maximal monotone graphs A(x, y) and A 0(x, z) for almost every \({(x,y,z)\in \Omega \times Y \times {\rm {\bf R}}^N}\), as \({\varepsilon \to 0}\), then every cluster point (u 0, d 0) of the sequence \({(u_{\varepsilon , \delta }, d_{\varepsilon , \delta } )}\) for the weak topology in the naturally associated Sobolev space is a solution of the homogenized problem which is expressed in terms of u 0 alone. This result applies to the case where \({A_{\varepsilon}(x)}\) is of the form \({B(x/\varepsilon)}\) where B(y) is periodic and continuous at y = 0, and, in particular, to the oscillating p-Laplacian.
