The present status and recent results from direct mass measurements of exotic nuclei are presented. ISOL, in-flight, and combined facilities provide a wide variety of nuclides far-off stability covering a wide range of half-lives down to the sub-millisecond region. Modern direct mass measurements are carried out using frequency and time-of-flight techniques. The obtained accurate mass data point to nuclear-structure phenomena and serve as a basis for astrophysical and weak-interaction studies. For a detailed study of the accuracy of the Penning trap mass spectrometer ISOLTRAP all expected sources of uncertainty were investigated with respect to their contributions to the uncertainty of the final result. In the course of these investigations, cross-reference measurements with singly charged carbon clusters 12C+ n were carried out. The carbon cluster ions were produced by use of laser-induced desorption, fragmentation, and ionization of C60 fullerenes and injected into and stored in the Penning trap system. The comparison of the cyclotron frequencies of different carbon clusters has provided detailed insight into the residual systematic uncertainty of ISOLTRAP and yielded a value of 8×10-9. This also represents the current limit of mass accuracy of the apparatus. Since the unified atomic mass unit is defined as 1/12 of the mass of the 12C atom, it will be possible to carry out absolute mass measurements with ISOLTRAP in the future. We recall the main features of the recently published mass formula, HFBCS-1, based on the Hartree-Fock-BCS method, and compare its extrapolations out to the neutron drip line with those given by the fine-range droplet model. A new Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov mass formula, HFB-1, is described: the rms error of the fit to 1888 masses is 0.766 MeV, compared with 0 .738 MeV for HFBCS-1, but there are no substantial changes in the predictions relevant to the r-process. After a critical examination of various questions relating to the effective nucleon mass and to the requirements of the relativistic mean-field theory, we conclude that the greatest remaining ambiguity concerns the nature of the pairing force. Transport properties of ion swarms in presence of Resonant Charge Transfer (RCT) collisions are studied using Momentum Transfer Theory (MTT). It was shown that, not surprisingly, RCT collisions may be represented as a special case of elastic scattering. Using the developed MTT we tested a previously available anisotropic set of cross-sections for Ar+Ar + collisions by making the comparisons with the available data for the transverse diffusion coefficient. We also developed an anisotropic set of Ne+Ne + integral cross-sections based on the available data for mobility, longitudinal and transverse diffusion. Anisotropic sets of cross-sections are needed for Monte Carlo simulations of ion transport and plasma models. The cyclotron frequencies of singly charged carbon clusters Cn + (n ≥ 2) were measured with the Penning-trap mass spectrometer ISOLTRAP at ISOLDE/CERN. The present limit of mass accuracy δm/m = 1.2 . 10-8 and the extent of the mass-dependent systematic shift (δm/m)sys = 1.7(0.6) . 10-10/u . (m - m ref) of the setup were investigated for the first time. In addition, absolute mass measurements by use of pure clusters of the most abundant carbon isotope 12C are now possible at ISOLTRAP. The electromagnetic form factor of the kaon meson is calculated in the light-cone formalism of the relativistic constituent quark model. The calculated K+ form factor is consistent with almost all of the available experimental data at low-energy scale, while other properties of the kaon could also be interrelated in this representation with reasonable parameters. Predictions of the form factors for the charged and neutral kaons at a higher-energy scale are also given, and we find the non-zero K0 form factor at Q 2≠ 0 due to the mass difference between the strange and down quarks inside K0. We study the quark mass expansion of the magnetic moments of the nucleon in a chiral effective field theory including nucleons, pions and delta-resonances as explicit degrees of freedom. We point out that the usual power counting applied so far to this problem misses important quark mass structures generated via an intermediate isovector M1 nucleon-delta transition. We propose a modified power counting and compare the resulting chiral extrapolation function to available (quenched) lattice data. The extrapolation is found to work surprisingly well, given that the lattice data result from rather large quark masses. Our calculation raises the hope that extrapolations of lattice data utilizing chiral effective field theory might be applicable over a wider range in quark masses than previously thought, and we discuss some open questions in this context. Furthermore, we observe that within the current lattice data uncertainties the extrapolations presented here are consistent with the Padé fit ansatz introduced by the Adelaide group a few years ago. The Gaussian Effective Potential in a fixed transverse unitarity gauge is studied for the static three-dimensional U(1) scalar electrodynamics (Ginzburg-Landau phenomenological theory of superconductivity). In the broken-symmetry phase the mass of the electromagnetic field (inverse penetration depth) and the mass of the scalar field (inverse correlation length) are both determined by solution of the coupled variational equations. At variance with previous calculations, the choice of a fixed unitarity gauge prevents from the occurrence of any unphysical degree of freedom. The theory provides a nice interpolation of the experimental data when approaching the critical region, where the standard mean-field method is doomed to failure. An explicit model realizing parton-hadron duality and fitting the data is suggested. Complex nonlinear Regge trajectories are important ingredients of the model. The inclusion of Δ and N* trajectories should account for all resonances in the direct channel. The exotic trajectory is responsible for the smooth background. An overview is given of the present status of low-energy tests of the Standard Model in nuclear beta-decay and neutron decay, covering the unitarity problem, searches for right-handed currents, scalar- and tensor-type currents, tests of time-reversal violation, as well as experiments to set the neutrino mass scale. In view of the large amount of ongoing and planned experiments in this sector, many new results can be expected in the coming decade. The nuclear shell model predicts that the next doubly magic shell-closure beyond 208Pb is at a proton number between Z = 114 and 126 and at a neutron number N = 184. The outstanding aim of experimental investigations is the exploration of this region of spherical “Superheavy Elements”. This article describes the experiments that were performed at the GSI SHIP. They resulted in an unambiguous identification of elements 107 to 112. They were negative so far in searching for elements 113, 116 and 118 at SHIP; however, positive results were reported from experiments in Dubna on elements 114 and 116 and from experiments in Berkeley on element 118. The measured decay data are compared with theoretical predictions. Some aspects concerning the reaction mechanism and the use of radioactive beams are also presented. The two systems 40Ca + 90,96Zr have been studied by measuring nucleon transfer reactions at two energies near the Coulomb barrier, thus complementing the available sub-barrier fusion cross-sections. Angular distributions for various transfer channels have been determined. Significantly larger neutron transfer cross-sections are found for the target 96Zr that exhibits the larger enhancement in the sub-barrier fusion cross-sections. All data have been analyzed with a new model for heavy-ion collisions that calculates simultaneously transfer cross-sections, fusion excitation functions and barrier distributions. The model gives a good account of both transfer and fusion data. Total Compton, individual shell and Compton energy-absorption scattering cross-sections are evaluated in the energy region 0.005 to 10 MeV for H, C, N, O, P and Ca. Compton energy absorption cross-sections deviate numerically with available values. The cause of the numerical discrepancies are not fully understood but can be attributed to Doppler broadening of the Compton scattered photons through a given angle. We present the first application of Genetic Algorithms to the analysis of data from an aperiodically ordered system, high resolution X-Ray diffraction spectra from multilayer heterostructures arranged according to a deterministic or random scheme. This method paves the way to the solution of the “inverse problem”, that is the retrieval of the generating disorder from the investigation of the spectra of an unknown sample having non crystallographic, non quasi-crystallographic order. The experimental data of the antideuteron production in proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions are analyzed within a simple model based on the diagrammatic approach to the coalescence model. The intranuclear cascade model is generally considered to be valid when the incident particle has a sufficiently small de Broglie wavelength to interact with individual nucleons. On this basis, a lower limit of 200 MeV is usually quoted for the incident energy in nucleon-induced reactions. Here this statement is questioned. A pragmatic approach is used, which compares the predictions of the Liège intranuclear cascade model with available data at incident energy between 40 and 250 MeV. It is found that this model gives surprisingly good results at energies well below the limit mentioned above. Results are also compared with the predictions of other models commonly used in this energy range. We study the static scalar susceptibility of the nuclear medium, i.e., the change of the quark condensate for a small modification of the quark mass. In the linear sigma model it is linked to the in-medium sigma propagator and its magnitude increases due to the mixing with the softer modes of the nucleon-hole excitations. We show that the pseudoscalar susceptibility, which is large in the vacuum, owing to the smallness of the pion mass, follows the density evolution of the quark condensate and thus decreases. At normal nuclear matter density the two susceptibilities become much closer, a partial chiral symmetry restoration effect as they become equal when the full restoration is achieved. We study the breaking of parity symmetry in the 2+1 Gross-Neveu model at finite temperature with chemical potential μ, in the presence of an external magnetic field. We find that the requirement of gauge invariance, which is considered mandatory in the presence of gauge fields, breaks parity at any finite temperature and provides for dynamical mass generation, preventing symmetry restoration for any non-vanishing μ. The dynamical mass becomes negligibly small as temperature is raised. Mass measurements of 34Ar, 73-78Kr, and 74,76Rb were performed with the Penning-trap mass spectrometer ISOLTRAP. Very accurate Q EC-values are needed for the investigations of the t-value of 0+ → 0+ nuclear β-decays used to test the standard model predictions for weak interactions. The necessary accuracy on the Q EC-value requires the mass of mother and daughter nuclei to be measured with δm/m ⩽ 3 . 10-8. For most of the measured nuclides presented here this has been reached. The 34Ar mass has been measured with a relative accuracy of 1.1 . 10-8. The Q EC-value of the 34Ar 0+ → 0+ decay can now be determined with an uncertainty of about 0.01%. Furthermore, 74Rb is the shortest-lived nuclide ever investigated in a Penning trap.
