Accurate determination of the diurnal variability and daily insolation of surface (0+) and subsurface (0?) irradiance are essential to estimate several physical, chemical and biological processes occurring at the surface layer of marine environments. Natural downwelling PAR and spectral UVR were examined on eight occasions at 0+ and 0? to refine empirical models, particularly in the UVR spectrum. The diurnal variability in UVR and PAR were wavelength dependent and were modeled by a sinusoidal equation. The best fit for PAR at 0+ and 0? was the sinusoid power of = 2 and = 2.5, respectively. In the UVR spectrum, sinusoids increased as wavelengths decreased ranging from = 2–5. Higher n values in the UV‐B spectrum suggest sharper increase/decrease near sunrise and sunset hours, ultimately reducing the final value of daily insolation at specified wavelengths. Calculated daily insolation of UV‐B/(UV‐A + PAR) ratio suggests that photoinhibition from exposure to UV‐B occurs within a shorter biologically effective day length than PAR, and is high during summer and low during winter. These results suggest that biogeochemical calculations based on diurnal models of irradiance measurements would benefit from accurate solar noon references and wavelength specificity, particularly in the UVR spectrum.  相似文献

The variation characteristics of Ultraviolet‐B (UVB; 280–315 nm) radiation over Beijing were explored using measured data that were collected in Beijing from November 2010 to October 2011. Seasonal variations in UVB radiation and influence of ozone and clearness index on the ratio of UVB to broadband solar radiation (G) were investigated. The annual value of UVB radiation in Beijing is 6.37 MJ m?2, and monthly average value ranges from 4.96 to 28.37 kJ m?2 d?1. The maximum daily total UVB radiation ranges from 6.55 kJ m?2 d?1 in November to 54.22 kJ m?2 d?1 in July. The monthly minimum of daily total UVB radiation varies from 0.5 kJ m?2 d?1 in February to 11.52 kJ m?2 d?1 in July. The monthly average of the ratio of UVB radiation to G ranges from 0.007 to 0.017%, with an annual average value of 0.012%. The variation in slant ozone column causes annual cycle of the ratio UVB radiation to G, with maximum value in summer. In addition, clouds have a greater effect on G than UVB radiation. Thus, the ratio increases by more than 17% when the atmospheric conditions change from clear to cloudy.  相似文献

The effect of ultraviolet (UV) radiation and copper (Cu) on apical segments of Pterocladiella capillacea was examined under two different conditions of radiation, PAR (control) and PAR+UVA+UVB (PAR+UVAB), and three copper concentrations, ranging from 0 (control) to 0.62, 1.25 and 2.50 μm . Algae were exposed in vitro to photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) at 70 μmol photons m?2 s?1, PAR + UVB at 0.35 W m?2 and PAR +UVA at 0.70 W m?2 during a 12‐h photocycle for 3 h each day for 7 days. The effects of radiation and copper on growth rates, content of photosynthetic pigments and photosynthetic performance were analyzed. In addition, samples were processed for light and transmission electron microscopy. The content of photosynthetic pigments decreased after exposure to radiation and Cu. Compared with PAR radiation and copper treatments modified the kinetics patterns of the photosynthesis/irradiance curve. The treatments also caused changes in the ultrastructure of cortical and subcortical cells, including increased cell wall thickness and accumulation of plastoglobuli, as well as changes in the organization of chloroplasts. The results indicate that the synergistic interaction between UV radiation and Cu in P. capillacea, led to the failure of protective mechanisms and causing more drastic changes and cellular imbalances.  相似文献

This article reported UV‐B radiation effects on biochemical traits in postharvest flowers of chrysanthemum. The experiment included six levels of UV‐B radiation (UV0, 0 μW cm?2; UV50, 50 μW cm?2; UV200, 200 μW cm?2; UV400, 400 μW cm?2; UV600, 600 μW cm?2 and UV800, 800 μW cm?2). Enhanced UV‐B radiation significantly increased hydrogen peroxide content (except for UV50), but did not evidently affect malondialdehyde content in flowers. Chlorophyll b and total chlorophyll content were significantly increased by UV600 and UV800. UV400 and UV600 significantly increased anthocyanins, carotenoids and UV‐B absorbing compounds content, and the activities of phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) and cinnamic acid‐4‐hydroxylase (C4H) over the control. 4‐coumarate CoA ligase (4CL) activity was significantly decreased by enhanced UV‐B radiation (except for UV50). The relationships between UV‐B radiation intensities and the activities of secondary metabolism enzymes were best described by a second‐order polynomial. The R2 values for UV‐B radiation intensities and the activities of PAL, C4H and 4CL were 0.8361, 0.5437 and 0.8025, respectively. The results indicated that enhanced UV‐B radiation could promote secondary metabolism processes in postharvest flowers, which might be beneficial for the accumulation of medically active ingredients in medicinal plants. The optimal UV‐B radiation intensities in the study were between UV400‐UV600.  相似文献

Stratospheric ozone depletion has caused an increase in the amount of ultraviolet‐B (UV‐B) radiation reaching the earth's surface. Numerous investigations have demonstrated that the effect of UV‐B enhancements on plants includes reduction in grain yield, alteration in species competition, susceptibility to disease and changes in plant structure and pigmentation. Many experiments examining UV‐B radiation effects on plants have been conducted in growth chambers or greenhouses. It has been questioned whether the effect of UV‐B radiation on plants can be extrapolated to field responses from indoor studies because of the unnaturally high ratios of UV‐B/ ultraviolet‐A radiation (320–400 nm) and UV‐B/photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) in many indoor studies. Field studies on UV‐B radiation effect on plants have been recommended to use the UV and PAR irradiance provided by natural light. This study reports the growth and yield responses of a maize crop exposed to enhanced UV‐B radiation and the UV‐B effects on aize seed qualities under field conditions. Enhanced UV‐B radiation caused a significant reduction in the dry matter accumulation and the maize yield in turn was affected. With increased UV‐B radiation the flavonoid accumulation in maize leaves increased and the contents of chlorophyll a, b and (a+b) of maize leaves were reduced. The levels of protein, sugar and starch of maize seed decreased with enhanced UV‐B radiation, whereas the level of lysine increased with enhanced UV‐B radiation.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of salinity and artificial UV radiation on the accumulation of mycosporine‐like amino acids (MAAs) in sexual and parthenogenetic Artemia from Lake Urmia. The nauplii hatched from the cysts were cultured until adulthood under two salinities (150 and 250 g L?1) and two light treatments (PAR and PAR+UVR) in the laboratory. Finally, the Artemia were analyzed for their concentration of MAAs. In most of the cases, the higher salinity level applied was found to increase the MAA concentrations in both Artemia populations significantly. The acquisition efficiency of MAAs in both Artemia populations increased under exposure to UVR‐supplemented photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) compared to those raised under PAR, except for Porphyra‐334. It was observed that combination of UV radiation and elevated salinity significantly increased the bioaccumulation of MAAs. Thus, the presence of these compounds in these populations of Artemia may increase their adaptability for living in high‐UV and high‐salinity conditions prevailing in Lake Urmia. Higher concentrations of MAAs in the parthenogenetic population of Artemia could be probably attributed to its mono sex nature and higher adaptation capacities to extreme environmental conditions.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of radiation (PAR+UVA+UVB) on the development and growth rates (GRs) of young gametophytes of Gelidium floridanum. In addition, photosynthetic pigments were quantified, carotenoids identified, and photosynthetic performance assessed. Over a period of 3 days, young gametophytes were cultivated under laboratory conditions and exposed to photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) at 80 μmol photons m?2 s?1 and PAR+UVA (0.70 W m?2)+UVB (0.35 W m?2) for 3 h per day. The samples were processed for light and electron microscopy to analyze the ultrastructure features, as well as carry out metabolic studies of GRs, quantify the content of photosynthetic pigments, identify carotenoids and assess photosynthetic performance. PAR+UVA+UVB promoted increase in cell wall thickness, accumulation of floridean starch grains in the cytoplasm and disruption of chloroplast internal organization. Algae exposed to PAR+UVA+UVB also showed a reduction in GR of 97%. Photosynthetic pigments, in particular, phycoerythrin and allophycocyanin contents, decreased significantly from UV radiation exposure. This result agrees with the decrease in photosynthetic performance observed after exposure to ultraviolet radiation, as measured by a decrease in the electron transport rate (ETR), where values of ETRmax declined approximately 44.71%. It can be concluded that radiation is a factor that affects the young gametophytes of G. floridanum at this stage of development.  相似文献

Ultraviolet‐B radiation (280–320 nm) has long been associated with the inactivation of microorganisms in the natural environment. Determination of the environmental inactivation kinetics of specific indicator organisms [used as tools in the field of microbial source tracking (MST)] is fundamental to their successful deployment, particularly in geographic regions subject to high levels of solar radiation. Phage infecting Bacteroides fragilis host strain GB124 (B124 phage) have been demonstrated to be highly specific indicators of human fecal contamination, but to date, little is known about their susceptibility to UV‐B radiation. Therefore, B124 phage (= 7) isolated from municipal wastewater effluent, were irradiated in a controlled laboratory environment using UV‐B collimated beam experiments. All B124 phage suspensions possessed highly similar first order log‐linear inactivation profiles and the mean fluence required to inactivate phage by 4 ? log10 was 320 mJ cm?2. These findings suggest that phage infecting GB124 are likely to be inactivated when exposed to the levels of UV‐B solar radiation experienced in a variety of environmental settings. As such, this may limit the utility of such methods for determining more remote inputs of fecal contamination in areas subject to high levels of solar radiation.  相似文献

The photoacclimation responses of the brown macroalga Sargassum cymosum were studied to determine its cytochemical and ultrastructural organization, as well as photosynthetic pigments and performance. S. cymosum was cultivated in three salinities (30, 35 and 40 psu) under four irradiation treatments: PAR‐only, PAR + UVA, PAR + UVB and PAR + UVA + UVB. Plants were exposed to PAR at 70 μmol photons m?2 s?1, PAR + UVB at 0.35 W m?2 and PAR +UVA at 0.70 W m?2 for 3 h per day during 7 days in vitro. Growth rate was not significantly affected by any type of radiation or salinity. The amount of pigments in S. cymosum was significantly influenced by the interaction of salinity and radiation treatments. Compared with PAR‐only, UVR treatments modified the kinetics patterns of the photosynthesis/irradiance curve. After exposure to UVR, S. cymosum increased cell wall thickness and the presence of phenolic compounds. The number of mitochondria increased, whereas the number of chloroplasts showed few changes. Although S. cymosum showed insensitivity to changes in salinity, it can be concluded that samples treated under four irradiation regimes showed structural changes, which were more evident, but not severe, under PAR + UVB treatment.  相似文献

Enantioselective capillary GC on a Supelco β-DEX 225 column (heptakis(2,3-di-O-acetyl-6-O-tert-butyldimethylsilyl)-β-cyclodextrin SPB 20poly—20% diphenyl, 80% dimethylsiloxane) and isotope-ratio mass spectrometry, coupled online with capillary GC on an HP5 column have been used for origin-specific analysis and authenticity control of essential oils, for example lemon (Citrus limon), lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus and Cymbopogon flexuosus), citronella (Cymbopogon nardus L.—Ceylon type and Cymbopogon winterianus—Java type), Litsea cubeba, Lippia citriodora, lemon myrtle (Backhousia citriodora), lemon gum (Eucalyptus citriodora), and, especially, precious lemon balm oil (Melissa officinalis L.). Isotope data (δ13CPDB and δ2HV-SMOW) for citral (neral + geranial) and citronellal from on-line GC–C/Py–IRMS and chiral data for citronellal in these essential oils are reported. The possibility of using these data to determine the origin of these essential oils and to detect adulteration is discussed. Principal-components analysis (PCA) of specific compounds in two essential oils of lemongrass and Litsea cubeba was performed as a practical statistical method for distinguishing between these two types of oil.  相似文献

The picoplanktonic cyanobacteria, Synechococcus spp., (Nägeli) are important contributors to global ocean primary production that can be stressed by solar radiation, both in the photosynthetically active (PAR) and ultraviolet (UV) range. We studied the responses of PSII quantum yield (active fluorescence), carbon fixation (14C assimilation) and oxygen evolution (membrane inlet mass spectrometry) in Synechococcus WH8102 under moderate UV and PAR. PSII quantum yield decreased during exposure to moderate UV and UV+PAR, with response to the latter being faster (6.4 versus 2.8 min, respectively). Repair processes were also faster when UV+PAR exposure was followed by moderate PAR (1.68 min response time) than when UV was followed by very low PAR (10.5 min response time). For the UV+PAR treatment, the initial decrease in quantum yield was followed by a 50% increase (“rebound”) after 7 min exposure, showing an apparent photoprotection induction. While oxygen uptake increased with PAR, it did not change under UV, suggesting that this oxygen‐dependent mechanism of photoprotection, which may be acting as an electron sink, is not an important strategy against UV. We used propyl gallate, an antioxidant, to test for plastid terminal oxidase (ptox) or ptox‐like enzymes activity, but it caused nonspecific and toxic effects on Synechococcus WH8102.  相似文献

An in vitro analysis of the effects of photosynthetically active and ultraviolet radiations was executed to assess the photostability of biologically relevant pigments phycocyanin (PC), phycoerythrin (PE) and allophycocyanin (APC) isolated from Lyngbya sp. A09DM. Ultraviolet (UV) irradiances significantly affected the integrity of PC, PE and APC; however, PAR showed least effect. UV radiation affected the bilin chromophores covalently attached to phycobiliproteins (PBPs). Almost complete elimination of the chromophore bands associated with α‐ and β‐subunit of PE and APC occurred after 4 h of UV‐B exposure. After 5 h of UV‐B exposure, the content of PC, PE and APC decreased by 51.65%, 96.8% and 96.53%, respectively. Contrary to PAR and UV‐A radiation, a severe decrease in fluorescence of all PBPs was observed under UV‐B irradiation. The fluorescence activity of extracted PBP was gradually inhibited immediately after 15–30 min of UV‐B exposure. In comparison to the PC, the fluorescence properties of PE and APC were severely lost under UV‐B radiation. Moreover, the present study indicates that UV‐B radiation can damage the structural and functional integrity of phycobiliproteins leading to the loss of their ecological and biological functions.  相似文献

This study demonstrates that UV radiation (UVR) reduces the photoprotective capacity of the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum by affecting xanthophyll cycle (XC) activity. The short‐term reduction of photosystem II (PSII) maximum efficiency of charge separation (Fv/Fm) in cells exposed to UVR could be explained mainly by a reduced photoprotective capacity under this condition. Phaeodactylum tricornutum cells acclimated to two different photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) intensities, high light (HL, 200 μmol quanta m?2 s?1) and low light (LL, 50 μmol quanta m?2 s?1), were exposed to saturating irradiance (1100 μmol quanta m?2 s?1) in the presence (PAR + UVR) and absence of UVR (PAR). HL cells exhibited a greater reduction in Fv/Fm in PAR + UVR when compared with the PAR treatment that was related to a reduction in the de‐epoxidation of XC pigments. In contrast, in LL cells, UVR did not considerably affect XC de‐epoxidation even though the reduction in Fv/Fm was greater than in HL cells. The negative effect of UVR on photoprotection was more pronounced in HL cells because they synthesized more XC pigments than LL cells. This was confirmed when XC activity was blocked with dithiothreitol and when PSII repair was inhibited with chloramphenicol (CAP). The differential reduction of Fv/Fm between PAR + UVR and PAR treatments disappeared when XC was blocked in HL cells. A higher reduction and an incomplete recovery of Fv/Fm were observed in cells incubated with CAP in the presence of UVR. Such responses confirm that UVR had a negative effect on photoprotective mechanisms causing an enhancement of damage by PAR, especially in HL‐acclimated cells in which heat dissipation is important for PSII regulation.  相似文献

The injury and cumulative effects of UV emission from fluorescence lamp were studied. UV intensity from fluorescence lamp was measured, and human skin samples (hips, 10 volunteers) were exposed to low‐dose UV irradiation (three times per week for 13 consecutive weeks). Three groups were examined: control group without UV radiation; low‐dose group with a cumulative dose of 50 J cm?2 which was equivalent to irradiation of the face during indoor work for 1.5 years; and high‐dose group with 1000 J cm?2 cumulative dose equivalent to irradiation of the face during outdoor activities for 1 year. Specific indicators were measured before and after UVA irradiation. The findings showed that extending the low‐dose UVA exposure decreased the skin moisture content and increased the transepidermal water loss as well as induced skin color changes (decreased L* value, increased M index). Furthermore, irradiated skin showed an increased thickness of cuticle and epidermis, skin edema, light color and unclear staining collagen fibers in the dermis, and elastic fiber fragmentation. In addition, MMP‐1, p53 and SIRT1 expression was also increased. Long‐term exposure of low‐dose UVA radiation enhanced skin photoaging. The safety of the fluorescent lamp needs our attention.  相似文献

Macroalgae play a crucial role in coastal marine ecosystems, but they are also subject to multiple challenges due to tidal and seasonal alterations. In this work, we investigated the photosynthetic response of Pyropia yezoensis to ultraviolet radiation (PAR: 400–700 nm; PAB: 280–700 nm) under changing temperatures (5, 10 and 15°C) and light intensities (200, 500 and 800 μmol photons m?2 s?1). Under low light intensity (200 μmol photons m?2 s?1), P. yezoensis showed the lowest sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation, regardless of temperature. However, higher temperatures inhibited the repair rates (r) and damage rates (k) of photosystem II (PSII) in P. yezoensis. However, under higher light intensities (500 and 800 μmol photons m?2 s?1), P. yezoensis showed higher sensitivity to UV radiation. Both r and the ratio of repair rate to damage rate (r:k) were significantly inhibited in P. yezoensis by PAB, regardless of temperature. In addition, higher temperatures significantly decreased the relative UV‐inhibition rates, while an increased carbon fixation rate was found. Our study suggested that higher light intensities enhanced the sensitivity to UV radiation, while higher temperatures could relieve the stress caused by high light intensity and UV radiation.  相似文献

Photosynthetic bacteria are attractive for biotechnology because they produce no oxygen and so H2‐production is not inhibited by oxygen as occurs in oxygenic photoorganisms. Rhodopseudomonas palustris and Afifella marina containing BChl a can use irradiances from violet near‐UV (VNUV) to orange (350–650 nm) light and near‐infrared (NIR) light (762–870 nm). Blue diode‐based pulse amplitude modulation technology was used to measure their photosynthetic electron transport rate (ETR). ETR vs Irradiance curves fitted the waiting‐in‐line model—ETR = (ETRmax × E/Eopt) × exp (1 ? E/Eopt). The equation was integrated over pond depth to calculate ETR of Afifella and Rhodopseudomonas in a pond up to 30 cm deep (A376, 1 cm = 0.1). Afifella saturates at low irradiances and so photoinhibition results in very low photosynthesis in a pond. Rhodopseudomonas saturates at ≈15% sunlight and shows photoinhibition in the surface layers of the pond. Total ETR is ≈335 μmol (e?) m?2 s?1 in NUV + photosynthetically active radiation light (350–700 nm). Daily ETR curves saturate at low irradiances and have a square‐wave shape: ≈11–13 mol (e?) m?2 day?1 (350–700 nm). Up to 20–24% of daily 350–700 nm irradiance can be converted into ETR. NIR is absorbed by water and so competes with the bacterial RC‐2 photosystem for photons.  相似文献

This article is a highlight of the study by Maclean et al. in this issue of Photochemistry and Photobiology describing the sporicidal effects 405 nm visible light alone on endospores of the Clostridium and Bacillus genera. 1.73 kJ cm?2 was capable of reducing endospore colony‐forming units by up to 4‐log10. These findings have never been previously demonstrated and may be incorporated into decontamination methods that span medical, military and food preparatory applications.  相似文献

The tropical and subtropical oceans experience intense incident ultraviolet radiation (280–400 nm) while their water columns are thought to be highly transparent. This combination represents a high potential for harmful effects on organisms, yet only few reports on the UV penetration properties of oligotrophic tropical waters exist. Here, we present the pattern of UV attenuation over a wide latitudinal range of the oligotrophic Red Sea. We recorded spectroradiometer profiles of PAR and UV, together with chlorophyll‐a (Chl‐a) and light absorption by chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) to determine the contribution of phytoplankton and CDOM toward UV attenuation. Transparency to UV exhibited a distinct latitudinal gradient, with the lowest and highest diffuse attenuation coefficients at 313 nm (Kd (313)) of 0.130 m?1 and 0.357 m?1 observed at the northern coast off Duba, and in the south close to the Farasan islands, respectively. Phytoplankton and CDOM both modulated UV attenuation, but CDOM was found to be the key driver despite the lack of riverine inputs. We confirm that ultraviolet radiation can reach deeper into the Red Sea than previously described, which means its potential to act as a stressor and selective driver for Red Sea organisms may have been underestimated to date.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The dot-blot bioautography was used to evaluate the antibacterial properties of Thymus vulgaris L. and Salvia officinalis L. essential oils (EOs) produced by three different manufacturers. The whole samples were applied at three concentrations on thin-layer chromatography (TLC) plates which were then subjected to bioautography against Bacillus subtilis. The samples of the highest activity were found. Then, they were separated using TLC and once again subjected to bioautography against B. subtilis. As was proved, only the essential oils of T. vulgaris L. possessed strong antibacterial properties for which mostly thymol and carvacrol were responsible. Their contents were calculated using TLC–UV densitometry. The highest contents were found in the essential oils of the highest antibacterial activity revealed in the dot-blot test. It means that a dot-blot test can be used for simple and fast evaluation of antibacterial properties of essential oils.  相似文献

The analytical microextraction methods of gas chromatography coupled with flame ionisation detector (GC-FID) for determination of selected essential oils in herbs were proposed. Two microextraction methods for the isolation of essential oils from plants such as Lavandula spica L., Melissa officinalis L., Mentha piperita L. and Salvia officinalis L. were used. The methods of solid-phase and single-drop microextractions, were optimised and compared. The obtained LOD values for all studied essential oils were found to be within 2.5–20.5 μg for SDME and 57.0–139.8 μg for SPME method per 100 g of dried sample leaves. The appropriate LOQ values were then 8.4–68.4 μg for SDME and 189.8–466.1 μg for SPME of target analytes per 100 g of dried sample leaves.   相似文献
