For the year 2001 the theme of National Chemistry Week, the American Chemical Societys annual outreach program, is Celebrating Chemistry and Art. Various examples of chemists who also made contributions to music, literature, and poetry are presented. The relationship of chemistry to such visual arts as painting, sculpture, photography, and art conservation is discussed. Useful resource articles are also cited. The history of National Chemistry Day, the brainchild of 1989 ACS President George C. Pimentel, and its successor, National Chemistry Week, are briefly discussed, as well as the desirability of a change in date because of competition from election news in the media. This article describes an on-campus celebration program for National Chemistry Week (NCW) at the University of Pittsburgh at Titusville (UPT). The program, consisting of a chemistry magic show, hands-on chemistry fun, and a poster display session, was presented free of charge to the public on the Saturday of NCW. Presenting the program on campus avoided the transportation of the necessary materials, allowed the incorporation of many interesting demonstrations, and provided an opportunity for the school to showcase its state-of-the-art facilities. The program reached the public through different media, such as flyers, newspapes, and TV and radio. Over 100 people of all ages from the local community participated in the program. One of the most successful characteristics of the program was the substantial involvement of college students taking chemistry classes. Directly doing or seeing various reactions that involved changes in color or production of sound, heat, or light was stimulating and memorable. Many student participants became chemistry club members right after the events and were excited about more opportunities to explore the world of chemistry. The discovery of vitamins as essential factors in the diet was a scientific breakthrough that changed the world. Diseases such as scurvy, rickets, beriberi, and pellagra were recognized to be curable with an adequate diet. These diseases had been prevalent for thousands of years and had a dramatic impact on societies as well as on economic development. Asymmetric organocatalysis has experienced an incredible development since the beginning of this century. The expansion of the field has led to a large number of efficient types of catalysts. One group, the diarylprolinol silyl ethers, was introduced in 2005 and has been established as one of the most frequently used in aminocatalysis. In this Minireview, we will take a look in the rear‐view mirror, ten years after the introduction of the diarylprolinol silyl ethers. We will focus on the perspectives of the different activation modes made available by this catalytic system. Starting with a short introduction to aminocatalysis, we will outline the properties that have made the diarylprolinol silyl ethers a common choice of catalyst. Furthermore, we will describe the major tendencies in the activation and reaction concepts developed with regard to reactivity patterns and combinations with other activation concepts. 相似文献

Nitridophosphates and phosphorus nitrides are thoroughly investigated classes of nitrides. During thirty years of research, the methods for their synthesis evolved from the condensation of molecular precursors at moderate temperatures and ambient pressures to state‐of‐the‐art high‐pressure and high‐temperature processes. Landmark breakthroughs made in recent years led to a comprehension‐based proficiency in nitridophosphate synthesis that is illustrated by the large compositional and structural diversity of the nitridophosphates known today. The versatile sulfur chemistry, as exemplified by the reactive yet tractable thiol group (-SH), offers unique opportunities for bypassing the obstacles in accessing stable and electroactive metal-organic frameworks. Of particular interest are recent advances in assembling MOF materials equipped with free-standing thiol functions: metal guests can be conveniently inserted to install electroactive metal-sulfur bonds, which, as crosslinks, also stabilize the host coordination net. Here the historical development of the bifunctional, two-step design embodied by the thiol-tagged MOF solids is traced, in order to highlight the underlying spirit that has driven research efforts in the past two decades. Going forward, broad new horizons are foreseen in solid-state materials synthesis, for example, arising from various sulfur-based hard-and-soft combinations, in synergy with the crystalline and modular MOF structural platform. 相似文献
