Binary droplet collisions are of importance in a variety of practical applications comprising dispersed two-phase flows. In the present work we focus on the collision of miscible droplets, where one droplet is composed of a high viscous liquid and the other one is of lower viscosity. This kind of collisions take place in, for instance, spray drying processes when droplets with different solid content collide in recirculation zones. The aim of this paper is to investigate the details of the flow inside the colliding droplets. For this purpose, two prototype cases are considered, namely the collision of equal sized droplets and the collision between a small and highly viscous droplet and a bigger low viscous droplet. A new experimental method has been developed in order to visualize the penetration and mixing process of two colliding droplets, where a fluorescence marker is added to one liquid and the droplets are excited by a laser. The results show a delay in the coalescence which takes place during the initial stage of a collision of droplets with different viscosities. Direct Numerical Simulations based on the Volume-of-Fluid method are used to study these collisions and to allow for a more detailed inspection of the mixing process. The method is extended to consider a second liquid with a different viscosity. In order to reproduce the delay of coalescence, an algorithm for the temporal suppression of the coalescence is applied. A predictive simulation of the delay is not possible, because the extremely thin air gap separating the droplets cannot be resolved by the numerics. This approach is validated by comparison with experimental data. The results provide local field data of the flow inside the collision complex, showing in particular a pressure jump at the liquid–liquid interface although no surface tension is present. The detailed analysis of the terms in the momentum balance show that the pressure jump results from the viscosity jump at the liquid–liquid interface.  相似文献

In this paper, we focused on modeling the collision phenomenon between two liquid droplets for application in spray simulations. It has been known that the existing O’Rourke collision model widely used in CFD codes is inaccurate in determining collision outcomes and droplet behavior. In addition, since the collision probability of the model follows a statistical approach involving computational cell geometry, the prediction results should be strongly dependent on the cell size. As a result, to more accurately calculate droplet collisions, the technique for predicting the droplet velocity and its direction after collision must be extended for use in spray modeling. Further, it is also necessary to consider all the possible collision outcomes, such as bouncing, stretching separation, reflexive separation and coalescence. Therefore, this paper describes the appropriateness of a composite concept for modeling collision outcomes and the implementation of deterministic collision algorithms into a multidimensional CFD code for the calculation of post-collisional droplet movements. Furthermore, the existing model does not consider the formation of satellite droplets. For this reason, our present modeling concept includes a fragmenting droplet collision model. Using the present model, we have validated the collision interactions between liquid droplets under high Weber number conditions by comparing our calculations with experimental results from a binary droplet collision. This paper also deals with the application of the model to inter-impingement sprays by analyzing the atomization characteristics, such as mean droplet size and velocity, spray tip penetrations and spray-shapes of the impinging spray using the suggested collision algorithms and then comparing the results with available experimental data.  相似文献

The purpose of this research was to investigate the dependence of effervescent spray unsteadiness on operational conditions and atomizer internal design by the ideal spray theory of Edwards and Marx. The convergent–divergent effervescent atomizer spraying water with air as atomizing medium in the “outside-in” gas injection was used in this study. Results demonstrated that droplet formation process at various air to liquid ratio (ALR) led to the spray unsteadiness and all droplet size classes exhibited unsteadiness behavior in spray. The spray unsteadiness reduced quickly at ALR of 3% and decreased moderately at ALR of other values as the axial distance increased. When the axial distance was 200 mm, the spray unsteadiness reduced dramatically with the increase in radial distance, but lower spray unsteadiness at the center of spray and higher spray unsteadiness at the edge of spray were shown as the axial distance increased. The spray unsteadiness at the center region of spray increased with the injection pressure. Low spray unsteadiness and good atomization performance can be obtained when the diameter of incline aeration holes increased at ALR of 10%. Although short mixing chamber with large discharge orifice diameter for convergent–divergent effervescent atomizer produced good atomization, the center region of spay showed high spray unsteadiness and maybe formed the droplet clustering.  相似文献

The effervescent atomization from an industrial Coker feed nozzle is compared for two different gas densities (air and mixed gas of 81.4 vol.% helium/18.6 vol.% nitrogen) at equivalent operating temperatures. The application is to observe the similarity of lab tests using air at 20 °C to the industrial process using steam at 300-400 °C. The effects of operating conditions, such as gas to liquid mass ratio, mixing pressure and void fraction on the flow regime, bubble size, and droplet size distribution were also examined in this study. The experiments were performed using mixtures of water with air or mixed gas, which resulted in gas to liquid mass ratios ranging from 1% to 4%.Stroboscopic back scattered imagery (SBSI) indicates that the average bubble size inside the nozzle conduit is similar when air and water are used as the process fluids, when compared to the case when mixed gas and water are used as the process fluids. Under similar conditions, the Phase Doppler Particle Anemometer (PDPA) data indicate that the droplet size in the spray is similar when using either mixed gas or air as the atomization gas.Experimental results obtained by high-speed video shadowgraphy (HSVS) indicate that the flow pattern inside the nozzle feeding conduit was slug flow with a tendency to attain annular flow with increased air to liquid mass ratios. Thus, from the experimental results it is evident that the smaller molecular weight of the mixed gas versus air (8.4 versus 29) does not significantly reduce the bubble (<±10% difference) and droplet size (<±1.5% difference), indicating a weak dependence of the gas phase density on two-phase atomization. This confirms that laboratory experiments on effervescent nozzles using air have reliable similarity to systems that use high temperature steam for the gas phase.  相似文献

This paper describes the tests of accuracy and the first application of a combined planar visualization technique. Its goal is two-phase flow discrimination, i.e. simultaneous measurements of velocity of droplets and ambient gas in the case of two-phase flow mixing, at the same location and with possible conditioning by “apparent diameter” (AD) of the droplets. It combines the mature techniques of particle image velocimetry (PIV), planar Mie scattering diffusion (PMSD), planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF), and it necessitates two synchronized cross-correlation systems, digital image treatment and analysis. This technique was developed with the objective of better describing the mixing between liquid and gaseous phases as in the case of high-pressure spray atomization in quiescent ambient gas. The basic principle of separation is to seed the ambient gas with micrometer particles and to tag the liquid with fluorescent dye. We use digital image treatment and analysis to discriminate between the phases. We use two cross-correlation PIV systems in order to obtain the velocity field of the droplets and gas simultaneously and separately at the same location. The digital image processing for separating the phases involves geometric measurement of droplet shapes. This leads to measurement of droplet parameters close to their real diameter, which could be used for analysis of actual mixing. A synchronized system composed of two CCD cameras is used for image recording, and two Nd:YAG lasers are used for generating pulsed light sheets at times t and t + δt. Tests were performed to check for different sources of errors. The combined technique was applied to measurements in high-pressure spray flow atomizing in a quiescent ambient gas, and first results are presented.  相似文献

An experimental and theoretical investigation has been made of an agglomeration technique for small solid particles suspended in a liquid. In this technique the particles are agglomerated under the action of a binding liquid, which is added to the turbulently flowing suspension and wets the particles. Special attention was paid to the first part of the wetting period of the technique.Using existing particle collision theories it was found, that the collision efficiency for solid particles and binding liquid droplets during the first part of the wetting period is extremely low; only one out of every thousand to ten thousand collisions results in an adhesion of a particle to a droplet. The influence of the energy dissipation rate and of the viscosity of the suspension liquid on the collision process as predicted by one of the theories is in reasonably good agreement with the experimental results.  相似文献

Improved numerical methods and physical models have been applied to droplet collision modeling. Numerically, an adaptive collision mesh method is developed to calculate collision rate. This method produces a collision mesh that is independent of the gas phase mesh and adaptively refined according to local parcel number density. An existing model describing the satellite droplet formation during the collision process is improved to reflect the experimental findings that the satellite droplets are much smaller than the parent droplets. The adaptive collision mesh and the improved satellite model have been used to simulate three impinging spray experiments. The model was able to qualitatively predict the occurrence of small satellite drops and bi-modal post-collision drop size distributions. The effect of the collision mesh and the satellite droplet model on a high-speed non-evaporating diesel spray is also assessed.  相似文献

Coaxial injectors have proven to be advantageous for the injection, atomization and mixing of propellants in cryogenic H2/O2 rocket engines. Thereby, a round liquid oxygen jet is atomized by a fast, coaxial gaseous hydrogen jet. This article summarizes phenomenological studies of coaxial spray generation under a broad variation of influencing parameters including injector design, inflow, and fluid conditions. The experimental investigations, performed using spark light photography and high speed cinematography in a shadow graph setup as main diagnostic means, illuminate the most important processes leading to atomization. These are identified as turbulence in the liquid jet, surface instability, surface wave growth and droplet detachment. Numerical simulations including free surface flow phenomena are a further diagnostic tool to elucidate some atomization particulars. The results of the study are of general importance in the field of liquid atomization.  相似文献

The present work comparably examines four different twin-fluid atomizers operated under the same operating conditions. Spray formation was examined by several approaches. The internal flow pattern was estimated using a simplified analytical approach, and the results were supported by the observation of the liquid discharge in the near-nozzle region. A high-speed back illumination was used for visualisation of the primary breakup. In the region of fully developed spray, the dynamics of droplets was studied using a phase-Doppler analyser (PDA). The information obtained from all methods was then correlated. Results show that the spray formation process depends mainly on the internal design of twin-fluid atomizer at low gas to liquid ratios (GLR). The amount of gas influences the character of the internal two-phase flow, a mechanism of the liquid breakup, droplet dynamics and a resulting drop size distribution. Differences among the atomizers are reduced with the increase in GLR. Moreover, it was shown that a certain mixing process can inherently create the annular internal flow which generates a stable spray characterized by relatively low mean droplet size.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of an experimental study of a twin-fluid internally mixed swirl atomizer. In this type of injectors, atomization is attained by injecting a small amount of air (i.e. of the order of less than 16% of the mass flow rate of liquid) into a liquid stream within the injector and the two-phase air liquid mixture is passed through a swirling passage to impart a swirling motion to the flow. Since most of the energy for atomization is supplied to the liquid by the atomizing air, a significantly small pressure drop can produce very fine spray with a small amount of atomizing air. At low values of air–liquid mass ratio (ALR), the appreciable tangential component of velocity with respect to the axial velocity provides a hollow cone spray structure, which turns into a solid cone spray with the increase in axial momentum, through either an increase in ALR or the liquid supply pressure. The results presented in this paper suggest that the investigated injector could be used to control the flow rate and spray characteristics (e.g. spray cone angle, spray solidity, breaking distance, and the droplet diameter) independent of each other by simultaneously varying the supply pressure of the liquid and the atomizing air flow rate. The controlled atomization studied in this paper for a twin-fluid internally mixed swirl atomizer makes it attractive to be used for various commercial applications as the atomizer is capable of providing various spray characteristics depending upon the application requirement.  相似文献

A planar and instantaneous visualization study of high-speed gas jets and their airblast sprays was performed to qualitatively examine the different atomization performances of different gas nozzles. For the visualization of high-speed gas jets (with no liquid injected), Nd:YAG pulsed laser sheets imaged the clustered vapor molecules in the Rayleigh range (d?λ), condensed from the natural humidity during the isentropic gas expansion through a nozzle. This method visualized both underexpanded sonic gas jets from a converging nozzle (SN-Type) and overexpanded supersonic gas jets from a converging-diverging nozzle (CD-Type). When liquid is cross-injected, the same laser sheet images the spray droplets of relatively large sizes (d?λ). The present visualization results show that the SN-Type nozzle develops a wider spray than the CD-Type nozzle, quite probably because the SN-Type nozzle has a wider gas jet (in the absence of liquid) than the CD-Type. Also, the wider spray of the SN-Type nozzle lowers the probability of droplet coalescence and generates finer sprays compared to the CD-Type nozzle. These visualization results qualitatively agree with the previous quantitative finding of the different atomization characteristics of the two types of nozzles (Park et al. 1996).  相似文献

The analysis of silica suspensions atomization   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The paper contains the results of experimental investigation of air–water and air–silica suspension atomization process in effervescent nozzles with internal mixing obtained by the use of the digital microphotography method. In experiments the different aqueous solutions of silica Aerosil 300 of different concentration have been used. The suspensions containing up to 0.04 (kg solid particles/kg solution) have Newtonian rheological properties. The observations were carried out at liquid flow rates changed from 0.0014 to 0.011 (kg/s) and gas flow rates from 0.00015 to 0.0065 (kg/s). It corresponded to gas to liquid mass ratios (GLR) values from 0.014 to 0.46. The analysis of photos shows that the droplets which have been formed during the liquid atomization have very different sizes. The differences between characteristics of effervescent atomization for water and suspensions used have not been observed. The present study confirmed the previous reports which suggested that the small particles added to solution do not change spray characteristics. The experimental results show that CD and SMD are non-linear functions of GLR. Their values are decreasing rapidly as GLR is increased from zero to around 0.07 and thereafter decreasing at a slower rate with further increase in GLR. In the same point (GLR = 0.07) the value of α is maximal. The first regime is characteristic for bubbly flow. The second is typical of annular flow regime. Boundary between bubbly and annular flow regime is observed at GLR = 0.07 for investigated systems. The correlations for CD and Sauter mean diameter were proposed. The results may be used for example to verify numerical models or comparisons with respect to similar atomization processes.  相似文献

This study is based on dynamic mesh refinement and uses spray breakup models to simulate engine spray dynamics. It is known that the Lagrangian discrete particle technique for spray modeling is sensitive to gird resolution. An adequate spatial resolution in the spray region is necessary to account for the momentum and energy coupling between the gas and liquid phases. This study uses a dynamic mesh refinement algorithm that is adaptive to spray particles to increase the accuracy of spray modeling. On the other hand, the accurate prediction of the spray structure and drop vaporization requires accurate physical models to simulate fuel injection and spray breakup. The present primary jet breakup model predicts the initial breakup of the liquid jet due to the surface instability to generate droplets. A secondary breakup model is then responsible for further breakup of these droplets. The secondary breakup model considers the growth of the unstable waves that are formed on the droplet surface due to the aerodynamic force. The simulation results are compared with experimental data in gasoline spray structure and liquid penetration length. Validations are also performed by comparing the liquid length of a vaporizing diesel spray and its variations with different parameters including the orifice diameter, injection pressure, and ambient gas temperature and density. The model is also applied to simulate a direct-injection gasoline engine with a realistic geometry. The present spray model with dynamic mesh refinement algorithm is shown to predict the spray structure and liquid penetration accurately with reasonable computational cost.  相似文献

A twin-fluid nozzle was proposed for low-pressure atomization. The nozzle is featured by swirling air flows in the mixing chamber. Liquid medium is thereby inhaled due to the pressure difference. An experimental work was performed to investigate the atomization performance of the nozzle and the hydrogen peroxide solution served as the liquid medium. Droplet size and droplet velocity were measured. Effects of the diameter of the air-injection orifice and the air-injection pressure were investigated. The results show that small droplet size is achieved with the proposed nozzle. As the spray develops, Sauter mean diameter (SMD) of the droplets decreases first and then increases, irrespective of the variation of the air-injection orifice diameter and the air-injection pressure. Overall SMD varies inversely with the air-injection orifice diameter and air-injection pressure. Near the nozzle, cross-sectional velocity distribution exhibits a peak-valley pattern, which is replaced with uniformized velocity distributions away from the nozzle. Similarity of cross-sectional radial velocity distribution at different air pressures is evidenced. Furthermore, the correlation between droplet size and droplet velocity is established.

The impingement of coarse sprays with a mean diameter in the order of millimeters on vertical walls with and without an additionally supplied wall film was studied at conditions well below the Leidenfrost limit. The fraction of the sprayed liquid deposited on the wall was determined experimentally and theoretically for various impingement angles with the help of a flat fan spray directed against the wall. The deposition fraction shows a distinct minimum in the range of intermediate impingement angles. This fact cannot be described by single-droplet-based deposition-splash criteria when considering the droplet’s impact momentum alone. The investigation demonstrates that the measurement results can be explained by including the collision of splashed droplets with incoming ones. In principle, the entrainment of the primary spray’s fine fraction in the gas flow field may also be of relevance. For the coarse and relatively sparse sprays investigated, the importance of the collisions in determining the overall balance of deposited and splashed liquid was estimated by event statistics derived from Monte Carlo simulations. The main outcome of wall interaction for the coarse spray is splashing. The splashed droplets form a secondary spray. When the impingement angle is steep, the splashed liquid is redirected towards the wall as a result of the collision between the incoming primary spray and splashed droplets.  相似文献

This paper presents a detailed numerical analysis of diesel engine spray structure induced by the Engine Combustion Network (ECN) Spray A at different injection pressures. The non-reacting simulations are performed using OpenFOAM where an Eulerian–Lagrangian model is adopted in the large eddy simulation (LES) framework. Effects of the LES mesh resolution as well as the spray model parameters are investigated with the focus on their impact on spray structure as the injection pressure varies. The predicted liquid and vapour penetration lengths agree well with the measurements at different injection pressures. The mixture fraction is well captured for the injection pressure of 100 and 150 MPa while a slight deviation from the measurements is observed for the injection pressure of 50 MPa near the nozzle. The parametric analysis confirms that the LES mesh resolution has significant effects on the results. A coarser mesh leads to higher liquid and vapour penetration lengths where the deviation from the measurements is larger, resulting in the highest error at the lowest injection pressure. As the mesh size increases, the droplet size distribution becomes narrower, its pick moves to the smaller droplet size and the probability of droplets with higher temperature increases. On the other hand, with increasing the mesh size, the carrier gas velocity decays slower and its radial dispersion decreases. It is found that the droplet characteristics are more affected by the mesh resolution when the injection pressure is the lowest while the opposite is true for the carrier phase. The number of Lagrangian particles also affects the droplet characteristics and the fuel-air mixing but their effects are not as significant as the mesh size. The results become less sensitive to the number of Lagrangian particles as the pressure injection decreases. Finally, the importance of the initial droplet size distribution is investigated, confirming its impact is marginal, particularly on the liquid length. It is observed that the initial droplet size is only important at very close to the nozzle and its impact on the spray structure becomes quickly insignificant due to the high rates of breakup and evaporation. This trend is consistent at different injection pressures.  相似文献
