Jet impingement boiling is very efficient in cooling of hot surfaces as a part of the impinging liquid evaporates. Several studies have been carried out to measure and correlate the heat transfer to impinging jets as a function of global parameters such as jet subcooling, jet velocity, nozzle size and distance to the surface, etc. If physically based mechanistic models are to be developed, studies on the fundamentals of two-phase dynamics near the hot surface are required. In the present study the vapor–liquid structures underneath a subcooled (20 K) planar (1 mm × 9 mm) water jet, impinging the heated plate vertically with a velocity of 0.4 m/s, were analyzed by means of a miniaturized optical probe. It has a tip diameter of app. 1.5 μm and is moved toward the plate by a micrometer device. The temperature controlled experimental technique enabled steady-state experiments in all boiling regimes. The optical probe data provides information about the void fraction, the contact frequencies and the distribution of the vapor and liquid contact times as a function of the distance to the surface. The measured contact frequencies range from 40 Hz at the onset of nucleate boiling to nearly 20,000 Hz at the end of the transition boiling regime. Due to condensation in the subcooled jet vapor disappears at a distance to the surface of app. 1.2 mm in nucleate boiling. This vapor layer becomes smaller with increasing wall superheat. In film boiling a vapor film thickness of 8 ± 2 μm was found.  相似文献

An experimental study was performed to characterize the boiling heat transfer of impinging circular submerged jets on simulated microelectronic chips with a nominal area of 5 mm × 5 mm. The heat transfer modes included natural convection, partially developed nucleate boiling, fully developed nucleate boiling and critical heat flux. The study included the effects of jet parameters and fluid subcooling on the nucleate boiling. The results showed that the nucleate boiling data varied only with fluid subcooling regardless of jet parameters and that both the pool and impingement nucleate boiling curves at the same subcooling condition were well correlated. The high heat flux portions of the boiling curves with jet exit velocities greater than 10 m/s were corrected for the elevated saturation temperature. A new expression was developed with an interpolation method to construct the partially developed nucleate boiling curve.  相似文献

The detailed mean flow and turbulence measurements of a turbulent air slot jet impinging on two different semi-circular convex surfaces were investigated in both free jet and impingement wall jet regions at a jet Reynolds number Rew=12,000, using a hot-wire X-probe anemometer. The parametric effects of dimensionless circumferential distance, S/W=2.79-7.74, slot jet-to-impingement surface distance Y/W=1-13, and surface curvature D/W=10.7 and 16 on the impingement wall jet flow development along a semi-circular convex surface were examined. The results show that the effect of surface curvature D/W increases with increasing S/W. Compared with transverse Reynolds normal stress, [`(v2 )] /Um2 \overline {v^2 } /U_{\rm m}^2 , the streamwise Reynolds normal stress, [`(u2 )] /Um2 \overline {u^2 } /U_{\rm m}^2 , is strongly affected by the examined dimensionless parameters of D/W, Y/W and S/W in the near-wall region. It is also evidenced that the Reynolds shear stress, -[`(uv)] /Um2 - \overline {uv} /U_{\rm m}^2 is much more sensitive to surface curvature, D/W.  相似文献

The distributions of temperature and dye concentration produced by a cross flow jet impinging on a flat surface are examined experimentally. Measurements show that for sufficiently high jet injection speeds, a ground vortex region upstream of the jet develops. The dimensionless gross geometrical features of this recirculating region are related by a simple linear law and are independent of the jet — surface spacing or the injection speed ratio.  相似文献

Density effects on isothermal jet mixing in confined swirling flow are investigated. The experiment is carried out with helium/air as the jet fluid in the same facility as that used by So et al. (1984a, b) and the test conditions are chosen to be the same as before. Contrary to the homogeneous mixing results, the helium jet is preserved up to 40 jet diameters downstream. The behavior of the mean and turbulence field depends highly on the initial jet velocity. Since the jets are fully turbulent and the jet momentum fluxes for inhomogeneous mixing are less than those for homogeneous mixing, the cause of this difference in behavior is directly attributed to the combined action of density difference and swirl. In spite of this, near isotropy of the turbulence field is again observed at 40 jet diameters downstream.  相似文献

Stereo-PIV study of flow around a maneuvering fish   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Stereoscopic PIV was used to measure the three-component velocity distribution around a live fish. At the same time, shadow images of the fish were captured by additional cameras in order to reconstruct the three-dimensional shape of the fish. The side jet shed against the swept tail during turning was evident in the results. The height of the jet was approximately equal to the height of the tail fin, and a vortex ring was observed around the side jet. Based on the circulation and diameter of the vortex ring, the impulse and time-averaged force in terms of the side jet were estimated.  相似文献

This study investigates the flow past a confined circular cylinder built into a narrow rectangular duct with a Reynolds number range of 1,500 ≤ Re d ≤ 6,150, by employing the particle image velocimetry technique. In order to better explain the 3-D flow behaviour in the juncture regions of the lower and upper plates and the cylinder, respectively, as well as the dynamics of the horseshoe vortex system, both time-averaged and instantaneous flow data are presented for regions upstream and downstream of the cylinder. The size, intensity and interaction of the vortex systems vary substantially with the Reynolds number. Although the narrow rectangular duct with a single built-in cylinder is a geometrically symmetrical arrrangement, instantaneous flow data have revealed that the flow structures in both the lower and upper plate–cylinder junction regions are not symmetrical with respect to the centreline of the flow passage. The vortical flow structures obtained in side-view planes become dominant sometimes in the lower juncture region and sometimes in the upper juncture region in unsteady mode.  相似文献

Velocity measurements in a confined swirl driven recirculating flow   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Laser-doppler measurements of the three components of mean velocity and their intensities have been made in an axisymmetric swirling isothermal turbulent combustion chamber flow. Swirl is generated by a gas-turbine aerodynamic swirler and the flow is representative of that found in the primary zone of many practical combustors. Two configurations were studied. In the first the fuel injector was removed and a central core jet entered the chamber via the resulting circular hole in the centre of the swirler. In the second case the injector was retained but a circular baffle was located at the exit plane: this latter device being necessary to prevent an inflow — not present for combusting flow — arising at the exit plane. The velocity data is sufficiently detailed to aid the testing and further development of methods for calculating combustion chamber flows.  相似文献

Algorithm of retrieving the heat transfer coefficient (HTC) from transient temperature measurements is presented. The unknown distributions of two types of boundary conditions: the temperature and heat flux are parameterized using a small number of user defined functions. The solutions of the direct heat conduction problems with known boundary temperature and flux are expressed as a superposition of auxiliary temperature fields multiplied by unknown parameters. Inverse problem is formulated as a least squares fit of calculated and measured temperatures and is cast in a form of a sum of two objective functions. The first results originates from an inverse problem for retrieving the boundary temperature the second comes from the inverse problem for reproducing the boundary heat flux. The final form of the objective function is obtained by enforcing constant in time value of the heat transfer coefficient. This approach leads to substantial regularization of the results, when compared with the standard technique, where HTC is calculated from separately reconstructed temperature and heat flux on the boundary. The validation of the numerical procedure is carried out by reconstructing a known distribution of the HTC using simulated measurements laden by stochastic error. The proposed approach is also used to reconstruct the distribution of the HTC in a physical experiment of heating a cylindrical sample using an impinging jet.  相似文献

Spatial and temporal variations of channel wall temperature during flow boiling microchannel flows using infrared thermography are presented and analyzed. In particular, the top channel wall temperature in a branching microchannel silicon heat sink is measured non-intrusively. Using this technique, time-averaged temperature measurements, with a spatial resolution of 10 μm, are presented over an 18 mm × 18 mm area of the heat sink. Also presented, within a specific sub-region of the heat sink, are intensity maps that are recorded at a rate of 120 frames per second. Time series data at selected point locations in this sub-region are analyzed for their frequency content, and dominant temperature fluctuations are extracted using proper orthogonal decomposition. Results at low-vapor-quality boiling condition indicate that temperatures can be determined from recorded radiation intensities with a temperature uncertainty varying from 0.9 °C at 25 °C to 1.0 °C at 125 °C. The time series data indicate periodic wall temperature fluctuations of approximately 2 °C that are attributed to the passage of vapor slugs. A dominant band of frequencies around 2–4 Hz is suggested by the frequency analysis. Proper orthogonal decomposition results indicate that first six orthogonal modes account for approximately 90% of the variance in temperature. The first mode reconstruction accounts for temporal variations in the dataset in the sub-region analyzed; however the magnitude of fluctuations and spatial variations in temperature are not accurately captured. A reconstruction using the first 25 modes is considered sufficient to capture both the temporal and spatial variations in the data.  相似文献

The effects induced in a coaxial circular channel flow by an axisymmetric turbulent jet are investigated for various values of the velocity and radius ratios 0.16m<1 and 2.5f30.9. The problem is solved by means of an e-L model of turbulence [1, 2]. The calculation scheme differs from the usual one for boundary layers, jets and wakes in that the pressure p is assumed to be unknown and is determined by assigning the boundary conditions for the radial velocity component and the transverse gradient of the longitudinal velocity component on both boundaries. On the basis of the calculations and the experimental data of [3, 4] generalized relations are obtained. These make it possible to estimate the turbulence characteristics of an axisymmetric jet in a confined cocurrent flow when the pressure is variable along the flow.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 5, pp. 14–19, September–October, 1986.In conclusion, the author wishes to thank G. Simultaneous velocity and concentration fields in a confined liquid-phase rectangular jet with a Reynolds number based on the hydraulic diameter of 50,000 (or 10,000 based on the velocity difference between streams and the jet exit dimension) and a Schmidt number of 1,250 were obtained by means of a combined particle image velocimetry (PIV) and planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) system. Data were collected at the jet exit and six further downstream locations. The velocity and concentration field data were analyzed for flow statistics such as turbulent fluxes, turbulent viscosity and diffusivity, and turbulent Schmidt number (Sc T ). The streamwise turbulent flux was found to be larger than the transverse turbulent flux, and the mean concentration gradient was not aligned with the turbulent flux vector. The average Sc T was found to vary both in streamwise and in cross stream directions and had a mean value around 0.8, a value consistent with the literature. Spatial correlation fields of turbulent fluxes and concentration were then determined. The R u′ϕ′ correlation was elliptical in shape with a major axis tilted downward with respect to the streamwise axis, whereas the R v′ϕ′ correlation was an ellipse with a major axis aligned with the cross-stream direction. Negative regions of R u′ϕ′ were observed in the outer streams, and these negatively correlated regions decayed with downstream distance and finally disappeared altogether. The R ϕ′ϕ′ correlation field was found to be an ellipse with the major axis inclined at about 45° with respect to the streamwise direction. Linear stochastic estimation was used to interpret spatial correlation data and to determine conditional flow structures. It is believed that a vortex street formed near the splitter plate is responsible for the negatively correlated region observed in the R u′ϕ′ spatial correlations of turbulent fluxes. A positive concentration fluctuation event was observed to correspond to a finger of nearly uniform concentration fluid reaching out into the outer stream, whereas a negative event corresponds to a pocket of nearly uniform fluid being entrained from the outer stream into the center jet region. Large-scale vortical structures were observed in the conditional velocity fields with an elliptical shape and a streamwise major axis. The growth of the structure size increased linearly initially but then grew more slowly as the flow transitioned toward channel flow. We measured velocity distributions in the anterior chamber of porcine eyes under simulated cataract surgery using stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (stereo-PIV). The surface of the cornea was detected based on the images of laser-induced fluorescent light emitted from fluorescent dye solution introduced in a posterior chamber. A coaxial phacoemulsification procedure was simulated with standard size (standard coaxial phacoemulsification) and smaller (micro coaxial phacoemulsification) surgical instruments. In both cases, an asymmetric flow rate of irrigation was observed, although both irrigation ports had the same dimensions prior to insertion into the eye. In cases where the tip of the handpiece was placed farther away from the top of the cornea, i.e., closer to the crystalline lens, direct impingement of irrigation flow onto the cornea surface was avoided and the flow turned back toward the handpiece along the surface of the corneal endothelium. Viscous shear stress on the corneal endothelium was computed based on the measured mean velocity distribution. The maximum shear stress for most cases exceeded 0.1 Pa, which is comparable to the shear stress that caused detachment of the corneal endothelial cells reported by Kaji et al. in Cornea 24:S55–S58, (2005). When direct impingement of the irrigation flow was avoided, the shear stress was reduced considerably.

We report the results of an experimental investigation of the heat transfer during nucleate boiling on a spatially confined boiling surface. The heat flux as a function of the boiling surface temperature was measured in pool boiling pots with diameters ranging from 15 mm down to 4.5 mm. It was found that a reduction of the pool diameter leads to an enhancement of the nucleate boiling heat flux for most of the boiling curve. Our experimental results indicate that this enhancement is not affected by the depth of the boiling pot, the material of the bounding wall, or the diameter of the inlet water supply. High-speed camera imaging shows that the heat transfer enhancement for the spatially confined pool boiling occurs in conjunction with a stable circulating flow, which is in contrast to the chaotic and mainly upward motion for boiling in larger pool diameters. An explanation for the enhancement of the heat transfer and the associated change in flow pattern is found in the singularisation of the nucleate boiling process.  相似文献

This paper addresses the ability to reliably measure the fluctuating velocity field in variable-viscosity flows (herein, a propane–air mixture), using hot-wire anemometry. Because the latter is sensitive to both velocity and concentration fluctuations, the instantaneous concentration field also needs to be inferred experimentally. To overcome this difficulty, we show that the hot-wire response becomes insensitive to the concentration of the field, when a small amount of neon is added to the air. In this way, velocity measurements can be made independently of the concentration field. Although not necessary to velocity measurements, Rayleigh light-scattering technique is also used to infer the local (fluctuating) concentration, and, therefore, the viscosity of the fluid. Velocity and concentration measurements are performed in a turbulent propane jet discharging into an air–neon co-flow, for which the density and viscosity ratios are 1.52 and 1/5.5, respectively. The Reynolds number (based on injection diameter and velocity) is 15400. These measurements are first validated: the axial decay of the mean velocity and concentration, as well as the lateral mean and RMS profiles of velocity and concentration, is in full agreement with the existing literature. The variable-viscosity flow along the axis of the round jet is then characterized and compared with a turbulent air jet discharging into still air, for which the Reynolds number (based on injection diameter and velocity) is 5400. Both flows have the same initial jet momentum. As mixing with the viscous co-flow is enhanced with increasing downstream position, the viscosity of the fluid increases rapidly for the case of the propane jet. In comparison with the air jet, the propane jet exhibits: (1) a lower local Reynolds number based on the Taylor microscale (by a factor of four); (2) a reduced range of scales present in the flow; (3) the isotropic form of the mean energy dissipation rate is first more enhanced and then drastically diminishes and (4) a progressively increasing local Schmidt number (from 1.36 to 7.5) for increasing downstream positions. Therefore, the scalar spectra exhibit an increasingly prominent Batchelor regime with a ~ k ?1 scaling law. The experimental technique developed herein provides a reliable method for the study of variable-viscosity flows.  相似文献

Wall jets are important for a wide variety of engineering applications, including ventilation of confined spaces and cooling and drying processes. Although a lot of experimental studies have been devoted to wall jets, many of these have focused on laminar or turbulent wall jets. There is a lack of experimental data on transitional wall jets, especially transitional wall jets released into a confined space or enclosure. This paper presents flow visualizations and high-resolution Particle Image Velocimetry measurements of isothermal transitional plane wall jets injected through a rectangular slot in a confined space. As opposed to many previous studies, not only the wall jet region but also the recirculation region in the remainder of the enclosure is analyzed. The data and analysis in this paper provide new insights into the behavior of transitional plane wall jets in a confined space and will be useful for the validation of numerical simulations of this type of jets.  相似文献

Turbulent mixing takes an important role in chemical engineering, especially when the chemical reaction is fast compared to the mixing time. In this context a detailed knowledge of the flow field, the distribution of turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) and its dissipation rate is important, as these quantities are used for many mixing models. For this reason we conduct a direct numerical simulation (DNS) of a confined impinging jet reactor (CIJR) at Re = 500 and Sc = 1. The data is compared with particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements and the basic flow features match between simulation and experiment. The DNS data is analysed and it is shown that the flow is dominated by a stable vortex in the main mixing duct. High intensities of turbulent kinetic energy and dissipation are found in the impingement zone which decrease rapidly towards the exit of the CIJR. In the whole CIJR the turbulence is not in equilibrium. The strong mixing in the impingement zone leads to a rapid development of a monomodal PDF. Due to the special properties of the flow field, a bimodal PDF is generated in cross-sections downstream the impingement zone, that slowly relaxes under relaminarising conditions. The time required for meso-mixing is dominating the overall mixing performance.  相似文献
