Large strain finite element method is employed to investigate the effect of straining mode on void growth. Axisymmetric cell model embedded with spherical void is controlled by constant triaxiality loading, while plane-stress model containing a circular void is loaded by constant ratio of straining. Elastic-plastic material is used for the matrix in both cases. It is concluded that, besides the known effect of triaxiality, the straining mode which intensifies the plastic concentration around the void is also a void growth stimulator. Experimental results are cited to justify the computation results. A dynamic void growth model in rate-sensitive plastic materials is derived. The constitutive relation of the matrix is in the overstress form proposed by Perzyna. When the rate of deformation sensitive parameter tends to zero, the Gurson model is retrieved. When the porous material element is under triaxial tension, the Carroll-Holt and Johnson models are retrieved. The normality condition of the plastic rate of deformation to the dynamic loading surface at constant equivalent rates of deformation (with the volumetric part also taken into account) is discussed, and it is shown that the normality rule no longer exists in general. Finally, an approximate expression of the dynamic loading surface that may be convenient for engineering applications is suggested.  相似文献

Ductile failure of metals is often treated as the result of void nucleation, growth and coalescence. Various criteria have been proposed to capture this failure mechanism for various materials. In this study, ductile failure of dual phase steels is predicted in the form of plastic strain localization resulting from the incompatible deformation between the harder martensite phase and the softer ferrite matrix. Microstructure-level inhomogeneity serves as the initial imperfection triggering the instability in the form of plastic strain localization during the deformation process. Failure modes and ultimate ductility of two dual phase steels are analyzed using finite element analyses based on the actual steel microstructures. The plastic work hardening properties for the constituent phases are determined by the in-situ synchrotron-based high-energy X-ray diffraction technique. Under different loading conditions, different failure modes and ultimate ductility are predicted in the form of plastic strain localization. It is found that the local failure mode and ultimate ductility of dual phase steels are closely related to the stress state in the material. Under plane stress condition with free lateral boundary, one dominant shear band develops and leads to final failure of the material. However, if the lateral boundary is constrained, splitting failure perpendicular to the loading direction is predicted with much reduced ductility. On the other hand, under plane strain loading condition, commonly observed necking phenomenon is predicted which leads to the final failure of the material. These predictions are in reasonably good agreement with experimental observations.  相似文献

Spall fracture and other rapid tensile failures in ductile materials are often dominated by the rapid growth of voids. Recent research on the mechanics of void growth clearly shows that void nucleation may be represented as a bifurcation phenomenon, wherein a void forms spontaneously followed by highly localized plastic flow around the new void. Although thermal, viscoplastic, and work hardening effects all play an essential role in the earliest stages of nucleation and growth, the flow becomes dominated by spherical radial inertia, which soon causes all voids to grow asymptotically at the same rate, regardless of differences in initial conditions or constitutive details, provided only that there is the same density of matrix material and the same excess loading history beyond the cavitation stress. These two facts, initiation by bifurcation at a cavitation stress, at which a void first appears, and rapid domination by inertia, are used to postulate a simple, but physically realistic, model for nucleation and early growth of voids in a ductile material under rapid tensile loading. A reasonable statistical distribution for the cavitation stress at various nucleation sites and a simple similarity solution for inertially dominated void growth permit a simple calculation of the initiation and early growth of porosity in the material.Parametric analyses are presented to show the effect that loading rate, peak loading stress, density of nucleation sites, physical properties of the material, etc. have on the applied pressure and distribution of void sizes when a critical porosity is reached.  相似文献

Finite element (FE) calculations of a cylindrical cell containing a spherical hole have been performed under large strain conditions for varying triaxiality with three different constitutive models for the matrix material, i.e. rate independent plastic material with isotropic hardening, visco-plastic material under both isothermal and adiabatic conditions, and porous plastic material with a second population of voids nucleating strain controlled. The “mesoscopic” stress-strain and void growth responses of the cell are compared with predictions of the modified Gurson model in order to study the effects of varying triaxiality and strain rate on the critical void volume fraction. The interaction of two different sizes of voids was modelled by changing the strain level for nucleation and the stress triaxiality. The study confirms that the void volume fraction at void coalescence does not depend significantly on the triaxiality if the initial volume fraction of the primary voids is small and if there are no secondary voids. The strain rate does not affect fc either. The results also indicate that a single internal variable, f, is not sufficient to characterize the fracture processes in materials containing two different size-scales of void nucleating particles.  相似文献

In this work, we propose a constitutive model for the finite-strain, macroscopic response of porous viscoplastic solids, accounting for deformation-induced changes in the size, shape and distribution of the voids. The model makes use of consistent homogenization estimates obtained by the “iterated variational linear comparison” procedure of Agoras and Ponte Castañeda (2013) to characterize both the instantaneous effective response of the porous material and the evolution of the underlying microstructure. The proposed model applies for general, three-dimensional loading conditions and can be implemented numerically for use in standard FEM codes. We also investigate the interplay between the evolution of the microstructure and the macroscopic stress–strain response, in the context of displacement-controlled, plane strain loading (bi-axial straining) of initially isotropic, porous, rigid-plastic materials with power-law hardening. We focus on the effect of strain triaxiality, and consider both extensional and contractile loading conditions leading to porosity growth and collapse, respectively. For both types of loadings, it is found that the macroscopic behavior of the material exhibits an initial hardening regime followed by a softening regime at sufficiently large strains. Consistent with earlier models and experimental results, the softening regime for extensional loadings is a consequence of porosity growth. On the other hand, the softening behavior predicted for contractile loadings is found to be a consequence of void collapse, i.e., of rapid changes in the average shape of the pores leading to crack-like shapes. For both types of loadings, the transition from hardening to softening in the macroscopic response can be identified with the onset of macroscopic strain localization. The associated critical conditions at the onset of localization are determined as a function of the strain triaxiality. The type of localization band ranges from dilatational to compaction bands as the bi-axial straining varies from uniaxial extension to uniaxial contraction.  相似文献

Beyond pressure-sensitivity, plastic deformation of glassy polymers exhibits intrinsic softening followed by progressive rehardening at large strains. This highly nonlinear stress–strain behavior is captured by a constitutive model introduced in this work. In the first part of the paper, we focus on void growth and coalescence in an axisymmetric representative material volume consisting of a single large void and a population of discrete microvoids. Our study shows that microvoid cavitation, enhanced by strain softening, accelerates the process of void coalescence resulting in brittle-like failure at lowered stresses and strains. Pressure-sensitivity also reduces stress-carrying capacity as well as influences the strain for void coalescence; plastic dilatancy effects are relatively milder. In the second part of the paper, we introduce a population of discrete spherical voids within a three-dimensional computational model to study void growth and damage ahead of a crack front. Our studies reveal a distinctive change in the deformed void shape from oblate to prolate when strain softening is followed by high rehardening at large plastic strains. By contrast, an extended strain softening regime promotes oblacity and facilitates multiple void interaction and their cooperative growth over large distances ahead of the crack front. This multi-void failure mechanism is exacerbated by pressure-sensitivity.  相似文献

The fracture toughness of ductile materials depends upon the ability of the material to resist the growth of microscale voids near a crack tip. Mechanics analyses of the elastic–plastic deformation state around such voids typically assume the surrounding material to be isotropic. However, the voids exist predominantly within a single grain of a polycrystalline material, so it is necessary to account for the anisotropic nature of the surrounding material. In the present work, anisotropic slip line theory is employed to derive the stress and deformation state around a cylindrical void in a single crystal oriented so that plane strain conditions are admitted from three effective in-plane slip systems. The deformation state takes the form of angular sectors around the circumference of the void. Only one of the three effective slip systems is active within each sector. Each slip sector is further subdivided into smaller sectors inside of which it is possible to derive the stress state. Thus the theory predicts a highly heterogeneous stress and deformation state. In addition, it is shown that the in-plane pressure necessary to activate plastic deformation around a cylindrical void in an anisotropic material is significantly higher than that necessary for an isotropic material. Experiments and single crystal plasticity finite element simulations of cylindrical voids in single crystals, both of which exhibit a close correspondence to the analytical theory, are discussed in a companion paper.

A three-dimensional micromechanical unit cell model for particle-filled materials is presented. The cell model is based on a Voronoi tessellation of particles arranged on a body-centered cubic (BCC) array. The three-dimensionality of the present cell model enables the study of several deformation modes, including uniaxial, plane strain and simple shear deformations, as well as arbitrary principal stress states. The unit cell model is applied to studies on the micromechanical and macromechanical behavior of rubber-toughened polycarbonate. Different load cases are examined, including plane strain deformation, simple shear deformation and principal stress states. For a constant macroscopic strain rate, the different load cases show that the macroscopic flow strength of the blend decreases with an increase in void volume fraction, as expected. The main mechanism for plastic deformation is broad shear banding across inter-particle ligaments. The distributed nature of plastic straining acts to reduce the amount of macroscopic strain softening in the blend as the initial void volume fraction is increased. In the case of plane strain deformation, the plastic flow is observed to initiate across inter-particle ligaments in the direction of constraint. This particular mode of deformation could not have been captured using a two-dimensional, plane strain idealization of cylindrical voids in a matrix. The potential for localized crazing and/or cavitation in the matrix is addressed. It is observed that the introduction of voids acts to relieve hydrostatic stress in the matrix material, compared to the homopolymer. It is also seen that the predicted peak hydrostatic stress in the matrix is higher under plane strain deformation than under triaxial tension (with equal lateral stresses), for the same macroscopic stress triaxiality. The effect of void volume fraction on the macroscopic uniaxial tension behavior of the different blends is examined using a Considère construction for dilatant materials. The natural draw ratio was predicted to decrease with an increase in void volume fraction.  相似文献

A mechanism of ductile fracture involving the interaction of relatively large voids with small-scale voids is studied by a computational model. The larger voids are described as circular cylindrical holes arranged in a doubly periodic array in the initial state. In the matrix material between these voids the nucleation and growth of much smaller voids is accounted for by using approximate constitutive equations for a ductile, porous medium. The computations show bands of highly localized straining and void growth, initiating at the surfaces of larger voids and growing into the matrix material, until the bands connect two neighbouring voids. The materials are analysed both under plane strain conditions and under conditions approximating those in a round tensile bar. The failure strains obtained under different principal stress ratios show rather good agreement when plotted against a measure of the stress-triaxiality.  相似文献

The effects of void size and hardening in a hexagonal close-packed single crystal containing a cylindrical void loaded by a far-field equibiaxial tensile stress under plane strain conditions are studied. The crystal has three in-plane slip systems oriented at the angle 60° with respect to one another. Finite element simulations are performed using a strain gradient crystal plasticity formulation with an intrinsic length scale parameter in a non-local strain gradient constitutive framework. For a vanishing length scale parameter the non-local formulation reduces to a local crystal plasticity formulation. The stress and deformation fields obtained with a local non-hardening constitutive formulation are compared to those obtained from a local hardening formulation and to those from a non-local formulation. Compared to the case of the non-hardening local constitutive formulation, it is shown that a local theory with hardening has only minor effects on the deformation field around the void, whereas a significant difference is obtained with the non-local constitutive relation. Finally, it is shown that the applied stress state required to activate plastic deformation at the void is up to three times higher for smaller void sizes than for larger void sizes in the non-local material.  相似文献

A combined physico-mechanical approach to research and modeling of forming processes for metals with predictable properties is developed. The constitutive equations describing large plastic deformations under complex loading are based on both plastic flow theory and continuum damage mechanics. The model which is developed in order to study strongly plastically deformed materials represents their mechanical behavior by taking micro-structural damage induced by strain micro-defects into account. The symmetric second-rank order tensor of damage is applied for the estimation of the material damage connected with volume, shape, and orientation of micro-defects. The definition offered for this tensor is physically motivated since its hydrostatic and deviatoric parts describe the evolution of damage connected with a change in volume and shape of micro-defects, respectively. Such a representation of damage kinetics allows us to use two integral measures for the calculation of damage in deformed materials. The first measure determines plastic dilatation related to an increase in void volume. A critical amount of plastic dilatation enables a quantitative assessment of the risk of fracture of the deformed metal. By means of an experimental analysis we can determine the function of plastic dilatation which depends on the strain accumulated by material particles under various stress and temperature-rate conditions of forming. The second measure accounts for the deviatoric strain of voids which is connected with a change in their shape. The critical deformation of ellipsoidal voids corresponds to their intense coalescence and to formation of large cavernous defects. These two damage measures are important for the prediction of the meso-structure quality of metalware produced by metal forming techniques. Experimental results of various previous investigations are used during modeling of the damage process.   相似文献

A mechanism of plastic flow localization in ductile matter near microvoids is studied. The voids with the size-scale of micromillimeter exist in sheet specimens under tensile loading, and the plastic strain field around voids is obtained by digital image processing of deformed grids. The size growth of the microvoids, the spacing change of the neighboring voids, and the development of shear bands in the ligament between the voids, are presented by experimental results accompanied with the plastic strain distribution, that gives good interpretation to the process of void growth and coalescence with the flow localization in the ligaments. The size-effect in metals containing distributed spherical voids is analyzed numerically using a finite strain generalization of a length scale dependent plasticity theory. Results are obtained for stress-triaxialities relevant in front of a crack tip in an elastic-plastic metal. The influence of different material length parameters in a multi-parameter theory is studied, and it is shown that the important length parameter is the same as under purely hydrostatic loading. It is quantified how micron scale voids grow less rapidly than larger voids, and the implications of this in the overall strength of the material is emphasized. The size effect on the onset of coalescence is studied, and results for the void volume fraction and the strain at the onset of coalescence are presented. It is concluded that for cracked specimens not only the void volume fraction, but also the typical void size is of importance to the fracture strength of ductile materials.  相似文献

An isotropic formulation of the viscoplasticity theory for small strain and based on overstress with a differential growth law for the equilibrium stress is introduced. The four material constants and the two material functions of the theory are determined from uniaxial tensile tests involving strain-rate changes at room temperature and performed on a 6061 T6 Aluminum Alloy. Subsequently the theory is used to predict the biaxial behavior under axialtorsion loading. All tests are under strain control and involve proportional loading and axial followed by torsional straining (and vice versa). Cyclic histories include in-phase and out-of-phase cycling. The predictions of the theory are very reasonable for this cyclically neutral alloy. For cyclic hardening or softening materials a modification of the theory is necessary and is under development.  相似文献
