Thermotropic nematic materials relax strong distortions by lowering the nematic order: the uniaxial symmetry is broken and is locally replaced by biaxial domains. We investigated the dynamics of the nematic order near a boundary surface of an asymmetric π-cell submitted to an external electric field, close to the electric order reconstruction threshold. An unexpected phenomenon is observed close, but below the threshold: the biaxial order spreads on the surface inducing a consequent bulk topological behaviour equivalent to the splay-bend fast transition allowed by order reconstruction at higher voltage.  相似文献

A thermomechanical flow of uniformly oriented nematic liquid crystal induced by a quasistatic electric field is observed. This flow occurs when the electric field strength exceeds the static Fréedericksz transition threshold. The effect is attributed to an electric-field-induced nonuniformity of the director orientation which is required for the onset of the thermomechanical effect. Infrared absorbance measurements have been carried out on two liquid crystalline organo-siloxane tetrapodes. Results unambiguously show the existence of a biaxial nematic phase below a uniaxial nematic phase. The three components of IR absorbance are used to calculate the various order parameters. On cooling, a weak first-order transition from isotropic to nematic is observed, followed by a second-order phase transition to biaxial nematic where the biaxiality parameters are found to be significantly large. Results are supported by observations from conoscopy and texture. Temperature dependences of the order parameters are well explained by the mean-field model for a biaxial phase.  相似文献

Possible mechanisms explaining the character of the relation I=I(V) for a nematic cell subjected to a large electric field are discussed, taking into account the reorientation effect of the nematic director induced by the external electric field. The analysis is performed in the quasi-static regime where the nematic orientation follows the time variation of the external field without delay. The time variation of the equivalent capacitance of the cell is equivalent to a pure resistance, and is responsible for a current peak when the applied voltage overcomes the threshold voltage for the transition of Fréedericksz.  相似文献

The destabilizing effect of a surface electric field, produced by selective ionic adsorption, on the molecular orientation of a nematic-liquid-crystal sample is analyzed for a cell in the shape of a slab of thickness d. The electric-field distribution considered in the analysis is the one obtained in the limit in which essentially all the positive ions are adsorbed. Because of the coupling of this surface field with the nematic director, the surface anchoring energy depends on the thickness of the sample as well as on the adsorption energy characterizing the surfaces. A relation connecting the threshold field for the destabilization of the homeotropic pattern to the adsorption energy and to the thickness of the sample is established in closed form, after solving a set of two coupled non-linear equations determining the electric-field distribution across the sample. It is shown that the values of surface electric field generated by adsorbed ions that can lead to a destabilization of the homeotropic alignment can be attained by real samples.  相似文献

Symmetry of a nematic liquid crystal phase is broken by an anchoring wall and also by an external field. Nematic system sandwiched between biaxial anchoring walls is introduced as a correspondent to a bulk nematic system exposed to a couple of fields, an electric field and a magnetic one in directions perpendicular to each other, and thermal behaviours of the system are studied. The crossover between a homeotropic structure and homogeneous one occurs, similarly to the bulk system in the fields, in which the anchoring condition of coexistence is shown to have the same expression as the one at the bulk. As to a characteristic phenomenon at the sandwiched system, it is proved that an appearance of a biaxial nematic order suppresses a uniaxial nematic order. A surface transition, i.e., a wetting phenomenon is shown to occur also in the biaxial nematics, even though the uniaxial order is suppressed therein.  相似文献

基于Landau-de Gennes理论, 利用松弛迭代法, 研究了混合排列向列相液晶薄盒中–1/2向错引起的有序重构的扩散现象, 给出了–1/2向错的核结构、双轴性结构, 以及盒厚减小时有序重构的扩散. 当盒厚小于15ξ时, 随着盒厚的减小, 向错范围和有序重构区域沿基板方向迅速扩散; 当盒厚减小到临界厚度10ξ时, 有序重构的范围扩散到整个液晶盒中, 以向错中心所对应的平面为界, 指向矢一部分垂面排列, 另一部分沿面排列. 本文的研究对拓扑缺陷对向列相液晶中的亚微米胶体粒子的调节作用具有一定的理论指导意义. 关键词: 混合排列向列相液晶薄盒 –1/2向错 有序重构扩散 松弛迭代法  相似文献

A local Frédericksz transition caused by electrically controlled surface anchoring in a nematic liquid crystal has been implemented owing to the displacement of surface-active ions. In the initial case, the nematic is homeotropically aligned by monomolecular layers of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide cations adsorbed on the surface of substrates. One of the substrates in a static electric field becomes free of a cation layer and specifies planar boundary conditions; as a result, a homeoplanar orientation structure is formed. The features of the dynamics of the optical response of the cell under study that are characteristic of the effect under consideration are discussed.  相似文献

Inspired by the observations of a remarkably stable biaxial nematic phase [van?den?Pol et?al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 258301 (2009)], we investigate the effect of size polydispersity on the phase behavior of a suspension of boardlike particles. By means of Onsager theory within the restricted orientation (Zwanzig) model we show that polydispersity induces a novel topology in the phase diagram, with two Landau tetracritical points in between which oblate uniaxial nematic order is favored over the expected prolate order. Additionally, this phenomenon causes the opening of a huge stable biaxiality regime in between uniaxial nematic and smectic states.  相似文献

A model is proposed for the reorientation dynamics of a confined nematic liquid crystal elastomer, where the effect of crosslinks is to couple the director to deformations of the elastic matrix. The model combines the (equilibrium) `neo-classical' theory of liquid crystal rubber elasticity with the simplest time evolution equations for a system described by two coupled, non-conserved order parameters. Relaxation from an orientation imposed by an electric field is studied as a function of elastic softness, starting angle, surface pretilt, and the relative mobilities of director and strain. Most importantly, the absence of a `semi-soft' elastic threshold changes the long-time behaviour of the effective refractive index of the medium from exponential to inverse power law decay. Predictions are compatible with recent experimental results by Chang, Chien and Meyer [Phys. Rev. E 56, 595 (1997)]. Received 22 June 1998  相似文献

The orientational relaxation of the director to its equilibrium orientation under electric, elastic, and viscous torques arising in twisted nematic liquid-crystal cells is investigated. It is shown that the relaxation time of the director depends strongly on the external electric field strength and weakly on the energy of anchoring of liquid-crystal molecules to the surfaces of the cell. The relaxation time of the director anomalously increases in electric fields close to the Fréedericksz threshold. It is established that, at specific strengths of the external electric field, the relaxation can occur in the form of traveling waves propagating from one edge to the other edge of the twisted nematic liquid-crystal cell. The calculations of the relaxation processes in the vicinity of the nematic-smectic A phase transition temperature demonstrate that the distortion of the director field is uniform over the entire cross section of the liquid-crystal cell and does not depend on the strength of anchoring of the liquid-crystal molecules to the surfaces of the cell.  相似文献

The electric field-induced orientational transition in a homeotropically oriented nematic liquid crystal cell is investigated. The interaction with the field as a result of anisotropy of the permittivity and flexoelectric polarization is taken into account. For an arbitrary energy of interaction of the nematic with the substrate simple relations are derived for determining the threshold characteristics of the phase transition. It is shown that, in contrast with planar orientation, in fields above a critical value a periodic structure can occur only by virtue of the flexoelectric effect. The resulting dependences for the threshold parameters in the given geometry are exceptionally useful for determining experimentally the surface energy and the difference in the flexoelectric coefficients. The effect of static external field is studied on the isotropic–nematic phase transition of a system of hard non-spherical particles (rods or platelets) with negative anisotropic polarizability (susceptabilities). On the basis of Onsager theory, the phase coexistence curve is calculated numerically without any approximation. It is found that a weakly ordered nematic phase (uniaxial planar) is in coexistence with a highly ordered biaxial nematic phase which ends at a tricritical point. In the limit of infinite field strength, the orientations of the particles are confined in a plane perpendicular to the field and continuous isotropic–nematic phase transition takes place.  相似文献

Symmetry considerations yield the general form, up to second order terms, for the deformation elastic energy of a nematic monolayer, composed by symmetric achiral molecules, on a rigid planar substrate. The deformation energy contains an elastic contribution linear in the deformation tensor, whose elements are the spatial derivatives of the average molecular orientation. This linear Lifshitz-invariant-like term can be responsible for a ground state of the nematic monolayer periodically deformed if the relevant elastic constant is stiffer than a critical value. The wave-length of the modulation diverges at the transition threshold. We show that only large variations of the tilt angle form stable states. The effect of a destabilizing electric or magnetic field on the layer is to induce (i) the transition towards the tilt-modulated phase, while (ii) for higher enough values of the field the modulation is destroyed.  相似文献

Aqueous suspensions of V2O5 ribbons are one of the very few examples of mineral liquid crystals. In the concentrated regime, we show that these ribbons organize in a biaxial nematic gel phase. A Couette shear cell was used to produce a well oriented sample for in situ synchrotron X-ray scattering studies. We observed two perpendicular anisotropic sections of reciprocal space, which proves the biaxial symmetry of the nematic order. The thermodynamic and flow properties of the biaxial nematic are well described by hard-core theories. We suggest the use of a shear geometry to produce and investigate single domains of other biaxial nematics, reported but still questioned in the literature. Received 26 May 1999  相似文献

We examine the robustness of order in nematic elastomers under mechanical strains imposed along and perpendicularly to the director when director rotation is prohibited. In contrast to electric and magnetic fields applied to conventional nematics, mechanical fields are shown theoretically and experimentally to greatly affect the degree of nematic order and related quantities. Unlike in liquid nematics, one can impose fields perpendicular to the director, thereby inducing biaxial order which should be susceptible to experimental detection. Nematic elastomers with unchanging director and degree of order should theoretically have the same elastic moduli for longitudinal and transverse extensions. This is violated when nematic order is permitted to relax in response to strains. Near the transition we predict the longitudinal modulus to be smaller than the transverse modulus; at lower temperatures the converse is true, with a crossover a few degrees below the transition. The differences are ascribed to the different temperature dependence of the stiffness of uniaxial and biaxial order. We synthesised side chain single-crystal nematic polymer networks, performed DSC, X-ray, birefringence, and thermo-mechanical characterisations, and then obtained linear moduli from stress-strain measurements. The effect of a surface electric field produced by ionic adsorption on the molecular orientation of a nematic liquid crystal sample is analyzed. The eigenvalue problem for a semi-infinite medium is analytically solved both for strong and weak anchoring situations. The threshold instabilities are numerically determined and it is shown that the homeotropic pattern can be destabilized also in the situation of strong anchoring. The dependence of the threshold field on the anchoring strength and on the surface polarization is determined by taking into account also the coupling of the quadrupolar component of the flexoelectric coefficient with the field gradient.
