We study approaches for obtaining convex relaxations of global optimization problems containing multilinear functions. Specifically, we compare the concave and convex envelopes of these functions with the relaxations that are obtained with a standard relaxation approach, due to McCormick. The standard approach reformulates the problem to contain only bilinear terms and then relaxes each term independently. We show that for a multilinear function having a single product term, this approach yields the convex and concave envelopes if the bounds on all variables are symmetric around zero. We then review and extend some results on conditions when the concave envelope of a multilinear function can be written as a sum of concave envelopes of its individual terms. Finally, for bilinear functions we prove that the difference between the concave upper bounding and convex lower bounding functions obtained from the McCormick relaxation approach is always within a constant of the difference between the concave and convex envelopes. These results, along with numerical examples we provide, give insight into how to construct strong relaxations of multilinear functions.  相似文献

We present a decomposition-approximation method for generating convex relaxations for nonconvex quadratically constrained quadratic programming (QCQP). We first develop a general conic program relaxation for QCQP based on a matrix decomposition scheme and polyhedral (piecewise linear) underestimation. By employing suitable matrix cones, we then show that the convex conic relaxation can be reduced to a semidefinite programming (SDP) problem. In particular, we investigate polyhedral underestimations for several classes of matrix cones, including the cones of rank-1 and rank-2 matrices, the cone generated by the coefficient matrices, the cone of positive semidefinite matrices and the cones induced by rank-2 semidefinite inequalities. We demonstrate that in general the new SDP relaxations can generate lower bounds at least as tight as the best known SDP relaxations for QCQP. Moreover, we give examples for which tighter lower bounds can be generated by the new SDP relaxations. We also report comparison results of different convex relaxation schemes for nonconvex QCQP with convex quadratic/linear constraints, nonconvex quadratic constraints and 0–1 constraints.  相似文献

 We define a convex extension of a lower semi-continuous function to be a convex function that is identical to the given function over a pre-specified subset of its domain. Convex extensions are not necessarily constructible or unique. We identify conditions under which a convex extension can be constructed. When multiple convex extensions exist, we characterize the tightest convex extension in a well-defined sense. Using the notion of a generating set, we establish conditions under which the tightest convex extension is the convex envelope. Then, we employ convex extensions to develop a constructive technique for deriving convex envelopes of nonlinear functions. Finally, using the theory of convex extensions we characterize the precise gaps exhibited by various underestimators of $x/y$ over a rectangle and prove that the extensions theory provides convex relaxations that are much tighter than the relaxation provided by the classical outer-linearization of bilinear terms. We study convex relaxations of nonconvex quadratic programs. We identify a family of so-called feasibility preserving convex relaxations, which includes the well-known copositive and doubly nonnegative relaxations, with the property that the convex relaxation is feasible if and only if the nonconvex quadratic program is feasible. We observe that each convex relaxation in this family implicitly induces a convex underestimator of the objective function on the feasible region of the quadratic program. This alternative perspective on convex relaxations enables us to establish several useful properties of the corresponding convex underestimators. In particular, if the recession cone of the feasible region of the quadratic program does not contain any directions of negative curvature, we show that the convex underestimator arising from the copositive relaxation is precisely the convex envelope of the objective function of the quadratic program, strengthening Burer’s well-known result on the exactness of the copositive relaxation in the case of nonconvex quadratic programs. We also present an algorithmic recipe for constructing instances of quadratic programs with a finite optimal value but an unbounded relaxation for a rather large family of convex relaxations including the doubly nonnegative relaxation.

Convex envelopes of nonconvex functions are widely used to calculate lower bounds to solutions of nonlinear programming problems (NLP), particularly within the context of spatial Branch-and-Bound methods for global optimization. This paper proposes a nonlinear continuous and differentiable convex envelope for monomial terms of odd degree, x 2k+1, where k N and the range of x includes zero. We prove that this envelope is the tightest possible. We also derive a linear relaxation from the proposed envelope, and compare both the nonlinear and linear formulations with relaxations obtained using other approaches.  相似文献

Convex underestimators of nonconvex functions, frequently used in deterministic global optimization algorithms, strongly influence their rate of convergence and computational efficiency. A good convex underestimator is as tight as possible and introduces a minimal number of new variables and constraints. Multilinear monomials over a coordinate aligned hyper-rectangular domain are known to have polyhedral convex envelopes which may be represented by a finite number of facet inducing inequalities. This paper describes explicit expressions defining the facets of the convex and concave envelopes of trilinear monomials over a box domain with bounds of opposite signs for at least one variable. It is shown that the previously used approximations based on the recursive use of the bilinear construction rarely yield the convex envelope itself.  相似文献

The approximation of the convex envelope of nonconvex functions is an essential part in deterministic global optimization techniques (Floudas in Deterministic Global Optimization: Theory, Methods and Application, 2000). Current convex underestimation algorithms for multilinear terms, based on arithmetic intervals or recursive arithmetic intervals (Hamed in Calculation of bounds on variables and underestimating convex functions for nonconvex functions, 1991; Maranas and Floudas in J Global Optim 7:143–182, (1995); Ryoo and Sahinidis in J Global Optim 19:403–424, (2001)), introduce a large number of linear cuts. Meyer and Floudas (Trilinear monomials with positive or negative domains: Facets of convex and concave envelopes, pp. 327–352, (2003); J Global Optim 29:125–155, (2004)), introduced the complete set of explicit facets for the convex and concave envelopes of trilinear monomials with general bounds. This study proposes a novel method to underestimate posynomial functions of strictly positive variables.  相似文献

We propose in this paper a general D.C. decomposition scheme for constructing SDP relaxation formulations for a class of nonconvex quadratic programs with a nonconvex quadratic objective function and convex quadratic constraints. More specifically, we use rank-one matrices and constraint matrices to decompose the indefinite quadratic objective into a D.C. form and underestimate the concave terms in the D.C. decomposition formulation in order to get a convex relaxation of the original problem. We show that the best D.C. decomposition can be identified by solving an SDP problem. By suitably choosing the rank-one matrices and the linear underestimation, we are able to construct convex relaxations that dominate Shor’s SDP relaxation and the strengthened SDP relaxation. We then propose an extension of the D.C. decomposition to generate an SDP bound that is tighter than the SDP+RLT bound when additional box constraints are present. We demonstrate via computational results that the optimal D.C. decomposition schemes can generate both tight SDP bounds and feasible solutions with good approximation ratio for nonconvex quadratically constrained quadratic problems.  相似文献

In a recent work, we introduced the concept of convex extensions for lower semi-continuous functions and studied their properties. In this work, we present new techniques for constructing convex and concave envelopes of nonlinear functions using the theory of convex extensions. In particular, we develop the convex envelope and concave envelope of z=x/y over a hypercube. We show that the convex envelope is strictly tighter than previously known convex underestimators of x/y. We then propose a new relaxation technique for fractional programs which includes the derived envelopes. The resulting relaxation is shown to be a semidefinite program. Finally, we derive the convex envelope for a class of functions of the type f(x,y) over a hypercube under the assumption that f is concave in x and convex in y.  相似文献

In Speakman and Lee (Math Oper Res 42(4):1230–1253, 2017), we analytically developed the idea of using volume as a measure for comparing relaxations in the context of spatial branch-and-bound. Specifically, for trilinear monomials, we analytically compared the three possible “double-McCormick relaxations” with the tight convex-hull relaxation. Here, again using volume as a measure, for the convex-hull relaxation of trilinear monomials, we establish simple rules for determining the optimal branching variable and optimal branching point. Additionally, we compare our results with current software practice.  相似文献

Based on the authors’ previous work which established theoretical foundations of two, conceptual, successive convex relaxation methods, i.e., the SSDP (Successive Semidefinite Programming) Relaxation Method and the SSILP (Successive Semi-Infinite Linear Programming) Relaxation Method, this paper proposes their implementable variants for general quadratic optimization problems. These problems have a linear objective function c T x to be maximized over a nonconvex compact feasible region F described by a finite number of quadratic inequalities. We introduce two new techniques, “discretization” and “localization,” into the SSDP and SSILP Relaxation Methods. The discretization technique makes it possible to approximate an infinite number of semi-infinite SDPs (or semi-infinite LPs) which appeared at each iteration of the original methods by a finite number of standard SDPs (or standard LPs) with a finite number of linear inequality constraints. We establish:?•Given any open convex set U containing F, there is an implementable discretization of the SSDP (or SSILP) Relaxation Method which generates a compact convex set C such that F⊆C⊆U in a finite number of iterations.?The localization technique is for the cases where we are only interested in upper bounds on the optimal objective value (for a fixed objective function vector c) but not in a global approximation of the convex hull of F. This technique allows us to generate a convex relaxation of F that is accurate only in certain directions in a neighborhood of the objective direction c. This cuts off redundant work to make the convex relaxation accurate in unnecessary directions. In 1951, Fenchel discovered a special duality, which relates the minimization of a sum of two convex functions with the maximization of the sum of concave functions, using conjugates. Fenchel's duality is central to the study of constrained optimization. It requires an existence of an interior point of a convex set which often has empty interior in optimization applications. The well known relaxations of this requirement in the literature are again weaker forms of the interior point condition. Avoiding an interior point condition in duality has so far been a difficult problem. However, a non-interior point type condition is essential for the application of Fenchel's duality to optimization. In this paper we solve this problem by presenting a simple geometric condition in terms of the sum of the epigraphs of conjugate functions. We also establish a necessary and sufficient condition for the ε-subdifferential sum formula in terms of the sum of the epigraphs of conjugate functions. This paper presents new approximation bounds for trilinear and biquadratic optimization problems over nonconvex constraints. We first consider the partial semidefinite relaxation of the original problem, and show that there is a bounded approximation solution to it. This will be achieved by determining the diameters of certain convex bodies. We then show that there is also a bounded approximation solution to the original problem via extracting the approximation solution of its semidefinite relaxation. Under some conditions, the approximation bounds obtained in this paper improve those in the literature.  相似文献

Quadratic assignment problems (QAPs) are known to be among the hardest discrete optimization problems. Recent study shows that even obtaining a strong lower bound for QAPs is a computational challenge. In this paper, we first discuss how to construct new simple convex relaxations of QAPs based on various matrix splitting schemes. Then we introduce the so-called symmetric mappings that can be used to derive strong cuts for the proposed relaxation model. We show that the bounds based on the new models are comparable to some strong bounds in the literature. Promising experimental results based on the new relaxations are reported.  相似文献

We study lower bounding methods for indefinite integer quadratic programming problems. We first construct convex relaxations by D.C. (difference of convex functions) decomposition and linear underestimation. Lagrangian bounds are then derived by applying dual decomposition schemes to separable relaxations. Relationships between the convex relaxation and Lagrangian dual are established. Finally, we prove that the lower bound provided by the convex relaxation coincides with the Lagrangian bound of the orthogonally transformed problem.  相似文献

In this paper we present a methodology for finding tight convex relaxations for a special set of quadratic constraints given by bilinear and linear terms that frequently arise in the optimization of process networks. The basic idea lies on exploiting the interaction between the vector spaces where the different set of variables are defined in order to generate cuts that will tighten the relaxation of traditional approaches. These cuts are not dominated by the McCormick convex envelopes and can be effectively used in conjunction with them. The performance of the method is tested in several case studies by implementing the resulting relaxation within a spatial branch and bound framework.  相似文献

In connection with an unsolved problem of Bang (1951) we give a lower bound for the sum of the base volumes of cylinders covering a d-dimensional convex body in terms of the relevant basic measures of the given convex body. As an application we establish lower bounds on the number of k-dimensional flats (i.e. translates of k-dimensional linear subspaces) needed to cover all the integer points of a given convex body in d-dimensional Euclidean space for 1≤kd−1. Completely positive (CP) tensors, which correspond to a generalization of CP matrices, allow to reformulate or approximate a general polynomial optimization problem (POP) with a conic optimization problem over the cone of CP tensors. Similarly, completely positive semidefinite (CPSD) tensors, which correspond to a generalization of positive semidefinite (PSD) matrices, can be used to approximate general POPs with a conic optimization problem over the cone of CPSD tensors. In this paper, we study CP and CPSD tensor relaxations for general POPs and compare them with the bounds obtained via a Lagrangian relaxation of the POPs. This shows that existing results in this direction for quadratic POPs extend to general POPs. Also, we provide some tractable approximation strategies for CP and CPSD tensor relaxations. These approximation strategies show that, with a similar computational effort, bounds obtained from them for general POPs can be tighter than bounds for these problems obtained by reformulating the POP as a quadratic POP, which subsequently can be approximated using CP and PSD matrices. To illustrate our results, we numerically compare the bounds obtained from these relaxation approaches on small scale fourth-order degree POPs.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the class of linearly constrained nonconvex quadratic programming problems, and present a new approach based on a novel Reformulation-Linearization/Convexification Technique. In this approach, a tight linear (or convex) programming relaxation, or outer-approximation to the convex envelope of the objective function over the constrained region, is constructed for the problem by generating new constraints through the process of employing suitable products of constraints and using variable redefinitions. Various such relaxations are considered and analyzed, including ones that retain some useful nonlinear relationships. Efficient solution techniques are then explored for solving these relaxations in order to derive lower and upper bounds on the problem, and appropriate branching/partitioning strategies are used in concert with these bounding techniques to derive a convergent algorithm. Computational results are presented on a set of test problems from the literature to demonstrate the efficiency of the approach. (One of these test problems had not previously been solved to optimality). It is shown that for many problems, the initial relaxation itself produces an optimal solution.  相似文献
