Among a number of stable and unstable nuclides formed in material exposed to cosmic radiation the spallation nuclide53Mn (T=2·106 a) is investigated in meteoritic manganese by combined techniques of neutron activation and advanced γ-spectrometry. The need for an economic use of precious meteorites is so ensured best. Intense neutron bombardment transforms the long-livedK-emitter53Mn into54Mn, which is detected by its 0.84 MeV γ-rays. Using the (n,γ) cross section—recently derived byMillard53Mn-values in the range of 60–600 dpm/kg (10−11 g/g) are found in a larger number of iron meteorite samples, which are only 1–3 g in weight. The determination is very specific and under appropriate conditions unaffected by side reactions. The attempt to use the44Ti (n,γ)45Ti reactions for the analysis of spallogenic titanium failed, because the σtherm of44Ti was found to be unexpectedly low (10 barns). Additionally,45Sc was determined after (n,γ) reaction by the46Sc γ,γ-cascades.   相似文献

The nuclide53Mn was produced by the following three nuclear reactions,52Cr(d, n)53Mn,51V(3He n)53Mn and50Cr(α, n), (α, p)53Mn. Enriched52Cr and50Cr metal targets were prepared on copper plate holder by electrodeposition. The commercially available natural vanadium foil was used for the51V(3He, n)53Mn reaction. Each target was bombarded in a cyclotron. Manganese was extracted and purified without using carrier from the bombarded targets by anion and cation exchanges and solvent extraction. The isotopic ratio53Mn/55Mn was measured by mass spectrometry and the amount of55Mn was determined by neutron activation analysis. The activity of53Mn obtained was 7 dpm by 750 millicoulombs in3He bombardment (E3He=20 MeV). The activity due to by-product54Mn was about several thousands times higher than that of53Mn in3He and deuteron bombardments, which were produced through51V(3He, γ)54Mn and53Cr(d, n)54Mn. In alpha bombardment (Eα=15 MeV), the activity of53Mn produced was 8 dpm by 95 millicoulombs. The activity ratio, dpm54Mn/dpm53Mn, was about 3, and this ratio was the best one among the results so far obtained.  相似文献

The determination of boron in rocks by charged particle activation using the10B(d, n)11C reaction is studied. A sample holder that allows reproducible irradiation of powdered samples is developed.11C is separated as11CO2. For boron concentrations between 2.35 and 25.2 μg·g−1, the standard deviations ranges from 7.1 to 22.8%. The results for USGS reference silicate rocks and Moroccan phosphate rock are compared to those obtained by other techniques.  相似文献

Radiochemical neutron activation analysis is the only method to determine the galactic cosmic ray (GCR) produced radionuclide53Mn (T=3.8·106) in small meteorite samples. A large number of such samples was analyzed using extremely thermalized neutrons of the DIDO reactor at the KFA Jülich. The detection limit of 10–14 g/g was recently achieved in our laboratory through the improvement of pre- and postirradiation chemistry. The main purpose of our studies of meteorite finds from Antarctica and the Southwestern United States is to establish their exposure ages up to 12·106 a by means of53Mn. Especially in the case of Antarctic meteorites terrestrial ages up to several 105 years have been observed by combining53Mn and26Al (T=7.2·105 a) measurements.  相似文献

A simple method for calculating the sensitivity for detecting a nuclide distributed uniformly in any given matrix through charged particle activation is described. This method takes into account the actual values of the reaction cross section at different energies as the beam traverses through a thick target and the corresponding stopping power values. The detection sensitivity for fluorine in a number of matrices through the19F(p, αγ)16O reaction have been calculated as a function of the energy from threshold to 4.16 MeV using this method and the sensitivity curves plotted. The sensitivity values (dps/ppm/μA) for a thick or thin target and even for a layer of known thickness at a particular depth within a sample can be directly read from these curves for known bombarding conditions. The comparator methods for charged particle activation analysis of RICCI1 and of CHAUDHRI,2 especially when the matrices of the sample and standard are different, have been compared in the case of F determination through the19F(p, αγ)16O reaction. It has been found that the errors are reduced by almost a factor of two when the latter method is used compared to the former one. The fluorine concentration in animal bones and teeth, apatite crystal, and rocks have been determined through the19F(p, αγ)16O reaction using the Melbourne University Pelletron.  相似文献

A fast (10 min), non-destructive simultaneous determination of silicon and phosphorus in cast iron and steel by 14 MeV neutron activation was developed. The 1.78 MeV28Al activity (T=2.24 min) induced by the reaction28Si(n, p)28Al is counted on a NaI(Tl) detector. Two measurements are made to correct for the 1.81 MeV56Mn activity (T=2.58 hr) from the iron matrix. However,28Al is also produced via31P(n, α)28Al. By (n, 2n) reaction, phosphorus yields also30P (T=2.6 min), the 0.511 MeV annihilation radiation of which is counted by two opposite NaI(Tl) detectors in coincidence. Again, two successive coincidence measurements are carried out in order to take into account the53Fe activity (β+; T=8.9 min) from54Fe(n, 2n)53Fe. The28Al measurement is appropriately corrected via the computed phosphorus content. An oxygen flux monitor was used to normalize to the same flux. Nuclear interferences have been examined. Special attention has been paid to the presence of copper. The standard deviation for phosphorus being as high as ca. 0.09% P for a single determination, this technique can only be practical as an independent phosphorus analysis for high phosphorus cast irons. The precision on the28Al measurement is 5% relative for 0.2% Si and 2.5% above 1% Si. Aspirant of the N.F.W.O.  相似文献

Uranium in human bone, drinking water and daily diet has been determined by neutron activation analysis using the238U(n, γ)239U reaction. An improved scheme for the separation of the239U is proposed; with this scheme, after neutron irradiation in a 100 kW TRIGA reactor, a uranium content as low as 5·10−11 g can be determined reliably, rapidly and easily. A wide range of uranium concentrations, from about 0.1 ppb up to about 10 ppb has been found in the bones of normal Japanese. Water from several Japanese city water services, and the daily diet taken in two Japanese cities, have been found to contain an average 9·10−9 g/l and 1.5 μg per person-day uranium, respectively.  相似文献

Charged particle activation analysis of phosphorus in biological materials using the31P (α,n)34mCl reaction has been studied. Since34mCl is also produced by the32S (α,pn) and the35Cl (α, α′ n) reactions, the thick-target yield curves on phosphorus, sulfur and chlorine were determined in order to choose the optimum irradiation conditions. As a result, it was found that the activation analysis for phosphorus without interferences from surfur and chlorine is possible by bombarding with less than 17 MeV alphas. The applicability of this method to biological samples was then examined by irradiating several standard reference materals. It was confirmed that phosphorus can readily be determined at the detection limit of 1 μg free from interferences due to the matrix elements.  相似文献

Fluorine is measured in a bone matrix using cyclic activation in a reactor system. The detection limit and hence precision is considerably improved when compared with other neutron activation techniques and includes an accurate method for correction of sodium matrix interference due to20F (T=11 s) by measurement of the24Na and23Ne photopeaks. In an interference free matrix the sensitivity is 0.6 μg F. Cyclyc activation, also applied to standard biological materials, will detect ≥10 other elements simultaneously.  相似文献

A neutron activation method is described for the analysis of small concentrations of Cu, Cd, Mn, Co, Cr and Zn contaminants in thorium and zirconium compounds used for telecommunication and reactor techniques. The thorium matrix is separated from the contaminants by pre-irradiation paper chromatography and the233Pa is isolated after irradiation by extraction into methyl isobutyl ketone and precipitation with cupferron. For the analysis of the contaminant in zirconium compounds only precipitation with cupferron is used after irradiation. The individual impurities are determined by γ-spectrometry following separation.  相似文献

A method has been developed for determining silicon in aluminium by fast neutron activation. It is based on the separation of two gamma lines by a Ge(Li) detector: the 1.73 MeV line from the product of27Al(n, α)24Na and the 1.78 MeV line from the28Si(n, p)28Al reaction. In the case of aluminium-silicon alloys 100 μg silicon can be determined, with an error of 10% in an aluminium sample of 1 g. The determination of nickel in atmospheric aerosols, collected on filter paper, is performed by thermal neutron activation analysis using the65Ni (T=2.56 h) isotope. Liquid-liquid extraction and anion-exchange are applied in the chemical separation. The absolute sensitivity of the method is ≌0.02 μg Ni. The relative sensitivity is 0.005 μg Ni/m3 if an air sample of about 1000 m3 is used.  相似文献

The difficulties of determining gold in rocks and ores are due to two causes: low gold concentrations in rocks (Clark 1 to 4·10−7%), and non-uniform distribution of gold in ores. A method is proposed which is based on neutron activation of the lead alloy obtained by cupel melting in the procedure of determining gold by cupel assay. Samples of 50 to 100 g are used for cupel melting. Such large samples guarantee their representativeness. Discs of 2 to 3 g are cut from the lead alloy block and activated in a neutron flux of 1011 to 1013 n·cm−2 sec−1. The gold content is determined from the photopeak of198Au using a standard for comparison. The sensitivity of the method is 0.02 g/metric ton, its accuracy at a gold content in the order of 1.0 g/metric ton is 10% relative. The method is distinguished by the fact that it is fast and requires little labour.  相似文献

The induced activity of the99Mo isotope is mostly determined via the 140.5 keV γ-line, which is the strongest gamma-ray of its daughter,99mTc. Some recent literature, however, indicates a direct feeding of this energy level from the mother isotope as well. Considering the importance of this line in practice as well as the large controversy and scattering in relevant nuclear data available at present, a combined effort was made to remeasure this questionable absolute intensity. A relative method of irradiating a Mo-target with reactor neutrons and repeatedly measuring its (n,γ) induced activity relative to the 181.1 keV and 739.5 keV gamma lines of99Mo as internal references was used. The weighted average of different runs yielded γ(99Mo, 140.5 keV)=(5.07±0.37)%. As a consequence, when the 140.5 keV gamma line is used, the contribution from the99Mo mother isotope should always be taken into account, e.g. in neutron cross-section measurements and neutron activation analysis.  相似文献

Heavy ion activation has been studied as a method for determining hydrogen. The reactions used [e.g.1H(7Li, n)7Be] are the “inverse” of well known reactions [e.g.7Li(p, n)7Be]. Nuclear activation parameters for the ion beams of interest (7Li2+,10B2+) have been studied. The analytical feasibility is demonstrated with the determination of hydrogen in titanium at the 100 and 30 ppm levels with relative precisions of 8 to 10%. Detection limits in titanium are in the 0.1 to 0.5 ppm range. Heavy ion bombardment is also accompanied by the emission of characteristic X-rays (“atomic” activation). The parameters governing X-ray emission and background production have been investigated. Experimental K and L X-ray yields from thick targets have been measured for many elements excited by On+ beams of 0.5 to 7 MeV/amu and Kr7+ beams of 0.5 to 1 MeV/amu. The simultaneous determination of trace elements at levels of 10 to several 100 ppm in microsamples (∼10−5 g) is demonstrated on biological specimens. K and L X-ray yields and corresponding detection limits have also been measured with the7Li2+ and10B2+ beams used for the nuclear activation of hydrogen. With these beams (∼6 MeV/amu) simultaneous nuclear and atomic activation is possible, yielding an unusual multielement trace analysis capability covering hydrogen and medium and high Z elements.  相似文献

Silicon as silicon dioxide in iron and steel-making slags and fluorspars was analyzed by 14 MeV neutron activation high-resolution γ-ray spectrometry. Silicon was detected by measuring the 1.78 MeV γ-ray of28Al, the product of the28Si(n, p) reaction, using a 30 cm3 coaxial Ge(Li) detector. A modified TPA method was used for the calculation.28Al is also produced from phosphorus by the31P(n,α) reaction, and from aluminium by the27Al(n,γ) reaction. The contribution from the former reaction could be corrected experimentally when the P2O5 content of the sample was known, while the latter reaction could be neglected in this neutron energy region. The experimental correction coefficient for phosphorus agreed well with the theoretical value calculated from the nuclear properties of silicon and phosphorus. Yields of28Al from SiO2, P2O5 and Al2O3 of the same weight percentages were calculated as 1, 0.426 (experimentally 0.44) and 0.0022, respectively. The results of this method agreed well with the results of the usual chemical methods. The limit of detection of SiO2 in iron and steel-making slags and fluorspars was calculated as 0.07%. The coefficient of variation of repeated experiments was compared with the statistical one.  相似文献

Oxygen in silicon nitride films on silicon wafers was analyzed by activation with the16O(3He, p)18F reaction. By3He bombardment of samples propertly arranged under consideration of the18F recoil effect, total oxygen was reliably determined and its predominant part was estimated to be located whether on film surface, in film interior, or on film-substrate interface. Sample films with 0.1 to 2 μm thicknesses were found to contain 0.2 to 2 μg/cm2 of oxygen in locations varying with preparation conditions. This method has been compared with ESCA and other methods for surface analysis.  相似文献

The possible application of cyclotron-produced fast neutrons to activation analysis for oxygen based on the16O(n, p)16N reaction has been investigated. Neutrons were produced by bombarding a thick beryllium target with 22 to 45 MeV deuterons. It was found that the sensitivity increases rapidly with the energy of the deuterons. Using 45 MeV deuterons and a 10 μA beam current a sensitivity of about 20 counts per 1 μg oxigen could be achieved, enabling the determination of less than 1 μg oxigen. In a direct comparison it was experimentally established that the sensitivity for cyclotron-produced neutrons assuming a deuteron beam of about 10 μA, is up to two orders of magnitude higher than that achievable for 14 MeV neutrons with a flux of about 1010 n/s. The interference of fluorine is at about the same level for both the cyclotron-produced and 14 MeV neutrons. Using cyclotron-produced fast neutrons in the investigated energy range, sodium and magnesium can also interfere, but only to a very much lower extent.  相似文献

 Seven rain and 2 snow samples collected in October and November 1993 were analyzed by GFAAS. Manganese concentrations ranging from 0.3 to 11.3 μg/L were found. pH-values (4.04–4.89, mean 4.52) and redox potentials (528–665 mV, mean 581 mV) were additionally determined. This is important with respect to a qualified specification of Mn in atmospheric samples. A 0.45 μm-filtration of the samples prior to GFAAS-analysis showed the same manganese concentrations in the filtrate as in the unfiltered samples. Hence, the amount of solid Mn species in the investigated samples is negligible. For an examination of the oxidation state of Mn some investigations concerning the stability of Mn(III) were carried out. They indicated that Mn(III) is unstable under atmospheric conditions. For checking whether all the manganese in rainwater exists as Mn(II), a sensitive IC method for the detection of Mn(II) was developed. By adapting a photometric procedure based on the oxidation of Leucomalachite Green (LMG) to Malachite Green (MG) by permanganate (MnO- 4) to the IC-flow-through-system, a limit of determination of 1 μg/L Mn(II) could be achieved. A comparison of the IC measurements with GFAAS-results of the filtered samples showed agreeing results. Thus, manganese in rainwater and snow exists entirely as soluble Mn(II).
