It is shown that both TE and TM waves incident on the surface of a semi-infinite one-dimensional thin-layer gyrotropic magnetic photonic crystal of the magnetic-nonmagnetic dielectric type can experience a number of refraction anomalies in an external electric field due to the effect of hybridization of evanescent waves in magnetic and nonmagnetic layers. These anomalies are absent under the same conditions in spatially homogeneous media consisting of the same materials as the photonic crystal.  相似文献

By an example of a semibounded one-dimensional magnetic photonic crystal (MPC) of easy-axis antiferromagnet-nonmagnetic dielectric type placed in mutually orthogonal dc magnetic and electric fields, conditions are found under which the quadratic magneto-optic interaction leads to a number of anomalies in the reflection and propagation conditions for TM or TE waves incident from outside on the surface of the superlattice. We investigate the magnetic excitations for the magnetic problem arising from the absence of magnetic translation symmetry in one dimension due to the presence of an impurity layer embedded within a semi-infinite ferromagnet. A Heisenberg model is employed to investigate the possibility that localized modes can occur with an impurity layer implanted within a semi-infinite ferromagnet. No electronic effects are considered. The theoretical approach employs the matching procedure in the mean field approximation and determines the propagating and evanescent spin amplitude fields including the contribution due to an applied field. The results are used to calculate the energies of localized modes associated with the impurity layer and with the surface. Numerical examples of the modes are given and they are found to exhibit various effects due to the interplay between the impurity layer and surface modes. It is shown that more localized modes can occur and the modification of the spin wave spectra can be signaled by the appearance of surface and impurity modes, besides the bulk excitations. Also, the bulk spin fluctuations field, the spin waves localized on the surface as well as on impurity layer depend are shown to depend on the nature of the exchange coupling between spin sites, the values of spin sites and the position of the impurity layer from the surface.  相似文献

We propose a type of photonic heterostructure by combining dielectric one-dimensional (1D) defective photonic crystals (PCs) and magnetic 1D defective PCs. Both of the two PCs consist of alternating positive-index-material (PIM) layers with a negative-index-material (NIM) defect layer. It is demonstrated by transfer matrix method that there is a polarization- and direction-independent defect mode in a wide incident-angle range within Bragg gaps in the heterostructure. The field distributions prove that the dielectric 1D defective PC benefits to achieve the approximately omnidirectional defect mode for TE waves while the magnetic 1D defective PC benefits for TM waves. Such a structure is useful for designing polarization-independent and omnidirectional or large incident angle narrow-passband filters in optical devices.  相似文献

We study electromagnetic waves localized near the surface of a semi-infinite dielectric medium covered by a graphene layer in the presence of a strong external magnetic field. We demonstrate that a novel type of hybrid TE-TM polarized surface plasmons can propagate along the graphene layer. We analyze the effect of the Hall conductivity on the polarization properties of these hybrid surface waves and suggest a possibility to tune the graphene plasmons by the external magnetic field.  相似文献

The propagation of transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) waves in a waveguide of arbitrary cross section with an anisotropic periodically space-and time-modulated insert is considered. Under the assumption that the modulation indices are small, analytical expressions for the TE and TM fields in the domain of weak interaction between the signal wave and modulating wave are derived. We propose a polarization splitter (PS) based on the slow light effect in a three-layer waveguide that consists of left-handed material (LHM) and dielectric layers with no birefringence. Transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) waves can be split by the intrinsic configuration of permittivity and permeability of LHM and dielectric layers. Simulation results are given to discuss the influence of electromagnetic parameters on the properties of our PS, and the capture and release of TE or TM waves are also realized in our PS which provides a flexible method to modulate the switching of different polarization waves.  相似文献

Based on the matrix method, a theory of generation of evanescent Bessel light beams (BLBs) in a structure containing a dielectric layer is developed. An exact solution is obtained for the problem of the tunneling of vector BLBs (TE and TM modes and their linear superposition) through the layer surrounded by various dielectric media in conditions of the total internal reflection at its boundaries. Abstract

The optical characteristics of the TE and TM guided modes of a multilayer anisotropic two-dimensional waveguide are investigated by using the field component transformation matrix, and also taking into account the substrate intrinsic dispersion. The embedded thin metal layer effects on the propagation constant for both lossless approximated and exact solutions are presented. The lossless approach is accurate enough for the TE waves, but it is not for the TM ones, which exhibit changes of about 10?6 for the equivalent index. The TM modes also present attenuation constant changes between the lossy and weakly-lossy solutions of the order of 9 dB/cm. Several complex field component mappings are drawn, and the surface plasma waves are also examined.  相似文献

This study presents the electromagnetic wave propagation through the frequency-dispersive and lossy double-negative slab embedded between two different semi-infinite media. The double-negative slab is realized by using two models, the Lorentz and Drude medium models. The properties and the required equations for the frequency-dispersive and lossy double-negative slab, the Lorentz medium and Drude medium are given in detail. After the construction of the problem, the reflection and transmission coefficients are derived for both TE and TM waves. Then, the reflected, transmitted and loss powers are determined using these coefficients. Finally, in the numerical results, the mentioned powers for TE and TM waves are computed and illustrated as a function of the incidence angle, the frequency and the slab thickness when the damping frequency changes.  相似文献

Transverse magnetic (TM) waves in a four-layer slab waveguide structure are studied for optical sensing applications. The structure consists of a semi-infinite substrate, a thin metal layer, a medium with negative permittivity and permeability as a guiding layer, and a semi-infinite layer as a cover. The proposed sensor is operated in reflection mode in which the angular position of the reflectance peak is used to detect small changes in the refractive index of the cover medium. The optimal structure parameters that correspond to the sharpest and highest peak are presented. The results reveal that for aluminum metal layer, a thickness of about 9 nm represents the optimum metal thickness. Moreover, the thickness, negative permittivity, and negative permeability of the guiding layer are found to have great impacts on the performance of the proposed optical waveguide sensor.  相似文献
