On the Lipschitz classification of normed spaces, unit balls, and spheres

For every normed space , we note its closed unit ball and unit sphere by and , respectively. Let and be normed spaces such that is Lipschitz homeomorphic to , and is Lipschitz homeomorphic to .

We prove that the following are equivalent:

1. is Lipschitz homeomorphic to .

2. is Lipschitz homeomorphic to .

3. is Lipschitz homeomorphic to .

This result holds also in the uniform category, except (2 or 3) 1 which is known to be false.

     

On classification of polarized varieties with non-integral nef values

Let be an -dimensional normal projective variety with only Gorenstein, terminal, -factorial singularities. Let be an ample line bundle on . Let denote the nef value of . The classification of via the nef value morphism is given for the situations when satisfies or .

     

Minimal index of a -crossed product by a finite group

Let be the -crossed product of a simple unital -algebra by a finite group . In this paper we show that the canonical conditional expectation from to has the minimal index if is simple. It is also proved that if is an outer action, then the canonical one is the unique conditional expectation of index-finite type from to , while there are infinitely many conditional expectations when a nontrivial subgroup of acts innerly on .

     

Almost-everywhere discontinuity of the spectral radius

A new construction of semi-free actions on Menger manifolds

A new construction of semi-free actions on Menger manifolds is presented. As an application we prove a theorem about simultaneous coexistence of countably many semi-free actions of compact metric zero-dimensional groups with the prescribed fixed-point sets: Let be a compact metric zero-dimensional group, represented as the direct product of subgroups , a -manifold and (resp., ) its pseudo-interior (resp., pseudo-boundary). Then, given closed subsets of , there exists a -action on such that (1) and are invariant subsets of ; and (2) each is the fixed point set of any element .

     

On the slope of bielliptic fibrations

Let be a bielliptic fibration. We prove is, up to base change, a rational double cover of an elliptic fibration and that is isotrivial provided it is smooth. Finally, we prove that the slope of is at least four provided the genus of the fibre is at least six.     

Necessary and sufficient conditions for s-Hopfian manifolds to be codimension-2 fibrators

Fibrators help detect approximate fibrations. A closed, connected -manifold is called a codimension-2 fibrator if each map defined on an -manifold such that all fibre , are shape equivalent to is an approximate fibration. The most natural objects to study are s-Hopfian manifolds. In this note we give some necessary and sufficient conditions for s-Hopfian manifolds to be codimension-2 fibrators.

     

Types in reductive -adic groups: The Hecke algebra of a cover

In this paper, is a non-Archimedean local field and is the group of -points of a connected reductive algebraic group defined over . Also, is an irreducible representation of a compact open subgroup of , the pair being a type in . The pair is assumed to be a cover of a type in a Levi subgroup of . We give conditions, generalizing those of earlier work, under which the Hecke algebra is the tensor product of a canonical image of and a sub-algebra , for a compact open subgroup of containing .

     

Non-invertibility of certain almost Mathieu operators

It is shown that the almost Mathieu operators of the type where is real and is a rational multiple of and an orthonormal basis for a Hilbert space, is not invertible.

     

-semigroups generated by second order differential operators with general Wentzell boundary conditions

Let us consider the operator where is positive and continuous in and is equipped with the so-called generalized Wentzell boundary condition which is of the form at each boundary point, where This class of boundary conditions strictly includes Dirichlet, Neumann and Robin conditions.

Under suitable assumptions on , we prove that generates a positive -semigroup on and, hence, many previous (linear or nonlinear) results are extended substantially.

Subsemivarieties of -algebras

A variety is a class of Banach algebras , for which there exists a family of laws such that is precisely the class of all Banach algebras which satisfies all of the laws (i.e. for all , . We say that is an -variety if all of the laws are homogeneous. A semivariety is a class of Banach algebras , for which there exists a family of homogeneous laws such that is precisely the class of all Banach algebras , for which there exists 0$"> such that for all homogeneous polynomials , , where . However, there is no variety between the variety of all -algebras and the variety of all -algebras, which can be defined by homogeneous laws alone. So the theory of semivarieties and the theory of varieties differ significantly. In this paper we shall construct uncountable chains and antichains of semivarieties which are not varieties.

     

On local irreducibility of the spectrum

Let be the algebra of complex matrices, and for denote by and the spectrum and spectral radius of respectively. Let be a domain in containing 0, and let be a holomorphic map. We prove: (1) if for , then for ; (2) if for , then again for . Both results are special cases of theorems expressing the irreducibility of the spectrum near .

     

Projections of polytopes on the plane and the generalized Baues problem

Given an affine projection of a -polytope onto a polygon , it is proved that the poset of proper polytopal subdivisions of which are induced by has the homotopy type of a sphere of dimension if maps all vertices of into the boundary of . This result, originally conjectured by Reiner, is an analogue of a result of Billera, Kapranov and Sturmfels on cellular strings on polytopes and explains the significance of the interior point of present in the counterexample to their generalized Baues conjecture, constructed by Rambau and Ziegler.

     

Invariant subspaces of arbitrary multiplicity for the shift on

A matrix-valued Choquet-Deny theorem

Let be a positive matrix-valued measure on a locally compact abelian group such that is the identity matrix. We give a necessary and sufficient condition on for the absence of a bounded non-constant matrix-valued function on satisfying the convolution equation . This extends Choquet and Deny's theorem for real-valued functions on .

We prove the existence of invariant projections from the Banach space of -pseudomeasures onto with for closed neutral subgroup of a locally compact group . As a main application we obtain that every closed neutral subgroup is a set of -synthesis in and in fact locally -Ditkin in . We also obtain an extension theorem concerning the Fourier algebra.
