While the general notion of ‘metaphor’ may offer a thoughtful analysis of the nature of mathematical thinking, this paper suggests that it is even more important to take into account the particular mental structures available to the individual that have been built from experience that the individual has ‘met-before.’ The notion of ‘met-before’ offers not only a principle to analyse the changing meanings in mathematics and the difficulties faced by the learner—which we illustrate by the problematic case of the minus sign—it can also be used to analyse the met-befores of mathematicians, mathematics educators and those who develop theories of learning to reveal implicit assumptions that support our thinking in some ways and act as impediments in others.  相似文献

Student motivation has long been a concern of mathematics educators. However, commonly held distinctions between intrinsic and extrinsic motivations may be insufficient to inform our understandings of student motivations in learning mathematics or to appropriately shape pedagogical decisions. Here, motivation is defined, in general, as an individual's desire, power, and tendency to act in particular ways. We characterize details of motivation in mathematical learning through qualitative analysis of honors calculus students’ extended, collaborative problem solving efforts within a longitudinal research project in learning and teaching. Contextual Motivation Theory emerges as an interpretive means for understanding the complexities of student motivations. Students chose to act upon intellectual-mathematical motivations and social-personal motivations that manifested simultaneously. Students exhibited intellectual passion in persisting beyond obtaining correct answers to build understandings of mathematical ideas. Conceptually driven conditions that encourage mathematical necessity are shown to support the growth of intellectual passion in mathematics learning.  相似文献

We analyze heuristic worked-out examples as a tool for learning argumentation and proof. Their use in the mathematics classroom was motivated by findings on traditional worked-out examples, which turned out to be efficient for learning algorithmic problem solving. The basic idea of heuristic worked-out examples is that they encourage explorative processes and thus reflect explicitly different phases while performing a proof. We tested the hypotheses that teaching with heuristic examples is more effective than usual classroom instruction in an experimental classroom study with 243 grade 8 students. The results suggest that heuristic worked-out examples were more effective than the usual mathematics instruction. In particular, students with an insufficient understanding of proof were able to benefit from this learning environment.  相似文献

In this paper, we address the problem of allocating the work elements, belonging to the products of a lot, to the stations of an assembly line so as to minimize the makespan. The lots that are processed on the assembly line are characterized by a low overall demand for each product. There is no buffer permitted in between the stations, and the line operates under learning. In particular, the stations’ learning slopes are assumed to be different. We present a procedure to determine the optimal assignments of the workload to the stations under learning variability and show that it considerably affects these assignments.  相似文献

Regularization Networks and Support Vector Machines are techniques for solving certain problems of learning from examples – in particular, the regression problem of approximating a multivariate function from sparse data. Radial Basis Functions, for example, are a special case of both regularization and Support Vector Machines. We review both formulations in the context of Vapnik's theory of statistical learning which provides a general foundation for the learning problem, combining functional analysis and statistics. Meaningful learning of formal mathematics in regular classrooms remains a problem in mathematics education. Research shows that instructional approaches in which students work collaboratively on tasks that are tailored to problem solving and reflection can improve students’ learning in experimental classrooms. However, these sequences involve often carefully constructed reinvention route, which do not fit the needs of teachers and students working from conventional curriculum materials. To help to narrow this gap, we developed an intervention—‘shift problem lessons’. The aim of this article is to discuss the design of shift problems and to analyze learning processes occurring when students are working on the tasks. Specifically, we discuss three paradigmatic episodes based on data from a teaching experiment in geometrical proof. The episodes show that is possible to create a micro-learning ecology where regular students are seriously involved in mathematical discussions, ground their mathematical understanding and strengthen their relational framework.  相似文献

Problem solving lies at the core of engineering and remains central in school mathematics. Word problems are a traditional instructional mechanism for learning how to apply mathematics to solving problems. Word problems are formulated so that a student can identify data relevant to the question asked and choose a set of mathematical operations that leads to the answer. However, the complexity and interconnectedness of contemporary problems demands that problem‐solving methods be shaped by systems thinking. This article presents results from three clinical interviews that aimed at understanding the effects that traditional word problems have on a student’s ability to use systems thinking. In particular, the interviews examined how children parse word problems and how they update their answers when contextual information is provided. Results show that traditional word problems create unintended dispositions that limit systems thinking.  相似文献

Undergraduate mathematics is traditionally designed and taught by content experts with little contribution from students. Indeed, there are signs that there is resistance from mathematics lecturers to involve students in the creation of material to support their peers – notwithstanding the fact that students have been successfully engaged as co-creators of material in other disciplines. There appears to be little research into what issues may lead to reservations to using student-created content in mathematics learning. This paper takes a case study approach to investigate the reasons for lecturers’ resistance to undergraduate student contributions to learning material, in particular with a view to the production of screencasts of mathematical explanations. It also investigates the views of students producing mathematical screencasts. This study is part of a larger research project investigating undergraduate involvement in mathematics module design. Four second-year students, who were producing mathematics screencasts as part of an internship, and five academics, were interviewed to gain an understanding of their views of the value of student screencasts. The interviews focused on the particular contributions students make to screencasts, outcomes for the students and level of lecturer acceptance of these resources. We argue that students benefit from creating screencasts for their peers by gaining deeper mathematical understanding, improved technological skills and developing other generic skills required of today's graduates. In contrast, we confirm lecturer resistance to using student-generated screencasts in their teaching materials. Lecturer reservations pertain to students’ lack of mathematical maturity and concerns over the mathematical integrity of the content that students produce. We conclude that close collaboration between students and lecturers during the design and production phases of screencasts may help lecturers overcome reservations, whilst preserving the benefits for students. In addition, we provide evidence that the process is a valuable professional development opportunity for the lecturers themselves.  相似文献

We use Action-Process-Object-Schema (APOS) Theory to analyze the mental constructions made by students in developing a unit circle approach to the sine, cosine, and their corresponding inverse trigonometric functions. Student understanding of the inverse trigonometric functions has not received much attention in the mathematics education research literature. We conjectured a small number of mental constructions, (genetic decomposition) which seem to play a key role in student understanding of these functions. To test and refine the conjecture we held semi-structured interviews with eleven students who had just completed a traditional college trigonometry course. A detailed analysis of the interviews shows that the conjecture is useful in describing student behavior in problem solving situations. Results suggest that students having a process conception of the conjectured mental constructions can perform better in problem solving activities. We report on some observed student mental constructions which were unexpected and can help improve our genetic decomposition.  相似文献

The problem tackled in this paper deals with products of a finite number of triangular matrices in Max-Plus algebra, and more precisely with an optimization problem related to the product order. We propose a polynomial time optimization algorithm for 2×2 matrices products. We show that the problem under consideration generalizes numerous scheduling problems, like single machine problems or two-machine flow shop problems. Then, we show that for 3×3 matrices, the problem is NP-hard and we propose a branch-and-bound algorithm, lower bounds and upper bounds to solve it. We show that an important number of results in the literature can be obtained by solving the presented problem, which is a generalization of single machine problems, two- and three-machine flow shop scheduling problems. The branch-and-bound algorithm is tested in the general case and for a particular case and some computational experiments are presented and discussed.  相似文献

We apply our definition of Volterra operator on abstract spaces to some problems arising in metric spaces. In contrast to those known before, our definition requires only the existence of a σ-algebra on a metric space. Note that, being applied to such spaces, the new definition substantially extends the classes of operators of an evolutionary nature. It also allows one to relate different properties of the Volterra-type operators. In particular, the problem of quasi-nilpotentness studied traditionally in the Banach spaces only (since it requires equality to zero of the spectral radius of an operator) allows interpretation in complete locally convex spaces. Apparently, the question on preserving the Volterra property by a conjugate operator is posed for the first time. In this paper, we present, analyse and critique an episode from a secondary school lesson involving an introduction to the definition of the scalar product. Although the teacher attempted to be explicit about the difference between a definition and a theorem, emphasizing that a definition was just an arbitrary assumption, a student rejected the teacher's definition in favour of his own alternative. With reference to this particular case, we seek to explore some ways in which teachers can introduce mathematical definitions to students so as to support, rather than attempt to circumvent, their mathematical sense making. In this regard, we believe that it is important to develop learning opportunities for students which help them to gain some appreciation of important structural and historical reasons that underpin the definitional choices made.  相似文献

The calculation of crystal structure from X-ray diffraction data requires that the phases of the ``structure factors' (Fourier coefficients) determined by scattering be deduced from the absolute values of those structure factors. Motivated by a question of Herbert Hauptman, we consider the problem of determining phases by direct algebraic means in the case of crystal structures with equal atoms in the unit cell, with small. We rephrase the problem as a question about multiplicative invariants for a particular finite group action. We show that the absolute values form a generating set for the field of invariants of this action, and consider the problem of making this theorem constructive and practical; the most promising approach for deriving explicit formulas uses SAGBI bases.

Optimal Rates for the Regularized Least-Squares Algorithm   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We develop a theoretical analysis of the performance of the regularized least-square algorithm on a reproducing kernel Hilbert space in the supervised learning setting. The presented results hold in the general framework of vector-valued functions; therefore they can be applied to multitask problems. In particular, we observe that the concept of effective dimension plays a central role in the definition of a criterion for the choice of the regularization parameter as a function of the number of samples. Moreover, a complete minimax analysis of the problem is described, showing that the convergence rates obtained by regularized least-squares estimators are indeed optimal over a suitable class of priors defined by the considered kernel. Finally, we give an improved lower rate result describing worst asymptotic behavior on individual probability measures rather than over classes of priors.  相似文献

This paper deals with chain graphs under the Andersson–Madigan–Perlman (AMP) interpretation. In particular, we present a constraint based algorithm for learning an AMP chain graph a given probability distribution is faithful to. Moreover, we show that the extension of Meek's conjecture to AMP chain graphs does not hold, which compromises the development of efficient and correct score + search learning algorithms under assumptions weaker than faithfulness.We also study the problem of how to represent the result of marginalizing out some nodes in an AMP CG. We introduce a new family of graphical models that solves this problem partially. We name this new family maximal covariance–concentration graphs because it includes both covariance and concentration graphs as subfamilies.  相似文献

In this paper, I propose a genetic learning approach to generate technical trading systems for stock timing. The most informative technical indicators are selected from a set of almost 5000 signals by a multi-objective genetic algorithm with variable string length. Successively, these signals are combined into a unique trading signal by a learning method. I test the expert weighting solution obtained by the plurality voting committee, the Bayesian model averaging and Boosting procedures with data from the S&P 500 Composite Index, in three market phases, up-trend, down-trend and sideways-movements, covering the period 2000–2006. Computational results indicate that the near-optimal set of rules varies among market phases but presents stable results and is able to reduce or eliminate losses in down-trend periods.  相似文献
