The flow fields surrounding a sphere sedimenting through a liquid near a vertical wall are characterized using 3D stereoscopic particle-image velocimetry (PIV) experiments. Three different fluids, a Newtonian reference fluid, a constant (shear) viscosity Boger fluid, and a shear-thinning elastic fluid, are used to determine the effects of both elasticity and shear-thinning on the flow field. All three fluids have similar zero shear viscosities. The Weissenberg number is manipulated by varying the diameter and the composition of the ball. Significant differences are found for the different types of fluid, demonstrating both the influence of elasticity and shear-thinning on the velocity fields. In addition, the impact of the wall on the flow field is qualitatively different for each fluid. We find that the flow behind the sphere is strongly dependent on the fluid properties as well as the elasticity. Also, the presence of a negative wake is found for the shear-thinning fluid at high Weissenberg number (Wi > 1).  相似文献

Finite element solutions are presented for the flow of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids around a sphere falling along the centreline of a cylindrical tube. Both rotating and stationary tube scenarios are considered. Calculations are reported for three different inelastic constitutive models that manifest shear-thinning, extension-thickening and their combination. The influence of inertia and these various forms of viscous response are examined for their influence upon the drag on the settling particle and the structure of the flow. Simulations are performed by employing a semi-implicit time marching Taylor–Galerkin/pressure-correction finite element algorithm, a fractional-staged scheme of second-order-accuracy. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The intrinsically coupled effects of the curvature of the flow-field and of the viscoelastic nature of suspending medium on the cross-stream lateral migration of a single non-Brownian sphere in wide-gap Couette flow are studied. Quantitative videomicroscopy experiments using a counterrotating device are compared to the results of 3D finite element simulations. To evaluate the effects of differences in rheological properties of the suspending media, fluids have been selected which highlight specific constitutive features, including a reference Newtonian fluid, a single relaxation time wormlike micellar surfactant solution, a broad spectrum shear-thinning elastic polymer solution and a constant viscosity, highly elastic Boger fluid. As expected for conditions corresponding to Stokes flow, migration is absent in the Newtonian fluid. In the wormlike micellar solution and the shear-thinning polymer solution, spheres are observed to migrate in the direction of decreasing shear rate gradient, i.e. the outer cylinder, except when the sphere is initially released close to the inner cylinder, in which case the migration is towards it. The migration is enhanced by faster relative angular velocities of the cylinders. Shear-thinning reduces the migration velocity, showing an opposite behavior as compared to previous results in planar shear flow. In the Boger fluid, within experimental error no migration could be observed, likely due to the large solvent contribution to the overall viscosity. For small Deborah numbers the migration results are well described by an heuristic argument based on a local stress balance.  相似文献

A hybrid finite volume/element method is analysed through the computation of creeping flows of viscoelastic fluids in plane 4:1 sharp and rounded-corner contraction geometries. Simulations are presented for three models: a constant viscosity Oldroyd-B fluid, and Phan-Thien/Tanner (PTT) shear thinning fluids of exponential and linear approximation form. A Taylor–Galerkin/pressure-correction scheme is implemented as the base time-stepping framework. The momentum equations are solved by a finite element method, whilst the constitutive equations are solved by a finite volume approach. Mesh convergence is analysed via refinement around the contraction to capture boundary layers and flow structure. Pressure drop is shown to increase with flow rate for a fixed fluid. For the Oldroyd-B model, singular behaviour is reported in the main stress component as one approaches the corner in the rounded, as with the sharp geometry. Velocity components display an asymptotic trend with a positive slope. Higher values of Weissenberg numbers (We) are reached with these finite volume schemes compared to their finite element counterparts, attributing this to superior accuracy properties.  相似文献

In the present paper, a comparative study of numerical solutions for Newtonian fluids based on the lattice‐Boltzmann method (LBM) and the classical finite volume method (FVM) is presented for the laminar flow through a 4:1 planar contraction at a Reynolds number of value one, Re=1. In this study, the stress field for LBM is directly obtained from the distribution function. The calculations of the stress based on the FVM‐data use the evaluations of velocity gradients with finite differences. The stress field for both LBM and FVM is expressed in the present study in terms of the shear stress and the first normal stress difference. The lateral and axial profiles of the velocity, the shear stress and the first normal stress difference for both methods are investigated. It is shown that the LBM results for the velocity and the stresses are in excellent agreement with the FVM results. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This numerical study focuses on regularised Bingham-type and viscoelastoplastic fluids, performing simulations for 4:1:4 contraction?Cexpansion flow with a hybrid finite element?Cfinite volume subcell scheme. The work explores the viscoplastic regime, via the Bingham?CPapanastasiou model, and extends this into the viscoelastoplastic regime through the Papanastasiou?COldroyd model. Our findings reveal the significant impact that elevation has in yield stress parameters, and in sharpening of the stress singularity from that of the Oldroyd/Newtonian models to the ideal Bingham form. Such aspects are covered in field response via vortex behaviour, pressure-drops, stress field structures and yielded?Cunyielded zones. With rising yield stress parameters, vortex trends reflect suppression in both upstream and downstream vortices. Viscoelastoplasticity, with its additional elasticity properties, tends to disturb upstream?Cdownstream vortex symmetry balance, with knock-on effects according to solvent-fraction and level of elasticity. Yield fronts are traced with increasing yield stress influences, revealing locations where relatively unyielded material aggregates. Analysis of pressure drop data reveals significant increases in the viscoplastic Bingham?CPapanastasiou case, O (12%) above the equivalent Newtonian fluid, that are reduced to 8% total contribution increase in the viscoelastoplastic Papanastasiou?COldroyd case. This may be argued to be a consequence of strengthening in first normal stress effects.  相似文献

A three-dimensional study of suspension of drops in simple shear flow has been performed at finite Reynolds numbers. Results are obtained using a finite difference/front tracking method in a periodic domain. The effects of the Reynolds number and the Capillary number are addressed at two volume fractions: 0.195 and 0.34. It is observed that suspensions of deformable drops exhibit a shear-thinning behavior. Similar to the motion of a single drop, drops migrate away from the walls. The effective viscosity, the first and the second normal stress differences oscillate around a mean value in all cases. The first normal stress difference increases with the Capillary number, the Reynolds number and the volume fraction. Results show that drops deform more and orient more in the flow direction as the Capillary number or the volume fraction is increased. Also, the average size of clusters is smaller than for suspension of rigid particles. The radial dependence of the pair distribution function across the channel has been studied. This dependency shows that the tendency to form clusters is reduced as the Capillary number increases or the volume fraction decreases.  相似文献

The two-dimensional and unsteady free stream flow of power law fluids past a long square cylinder has been investigated numerically in the range of conditions 60≤Re≤160 and 0.5≤n≤2.0. Over this range of Reynolds numbers, the flow is periodic in time. A semi-explicit finite volume method has been used on a non-uniform collocated grid arrangement to solve the governing equations. The global quantities such as drag coefficients, Strouhal number and the detailed kinematic variables like stream function, vorticity and so on, have been obtained for the above range of conditions. While, over this range of Reynolds number, the flow is known to be periodic in time for Newtonian fluids, a pseudo-periodic flow regime displaying more than one dominant frequency in the lift is observed for shear-thinning fluids. This seems to occur at Reynolds numbers of 120 and 140 for n=0.5 and 0.6, respectively. Broadly speaking, the smaller the value of the power law index, lower is the Reynolds number of the onset of the pseudo-periodic regime. This work is concerned only with the fully periodic regime and, therefore, the range of Reynolds numbers studied varies with the value of the power law index. Not withstanding this aspect, in particular here, the effects of Reynolds number and of the power law index have been elucidated in the unsteady laminar flow regime. The leading edge separation in shear-thinning fluids produces an increase in drag values with the increasing Reynolds number, while shear-thickening fluid behaviour delays this separation and shows the lowering of the drag coefficient with the Reynolds number. Also, the preliminary results suggest the transition from the steady to unsteady flow conditions to occur at lower Reynolds numbers in shear-thinning fluids than that in Newtonian fluids.  相似文献

A generalised form of the finitely extensible non-linear elastic (FENE) model for modelling non-linear flow of semi-dilute polymer solutions is proposed. It accounts for conformation-dependent polymer elasticity and predicts shear-thinning shear viscosity, non-linear elongational viscosity and first and second normal stress differences. The rheometric material functions predicted by the model are critically compared with the results of the linear Phan–Thien–Tanner model. The predictabilities of these constitutive models under benchmark flow problems are evaluated by time-dependent simulations, using finite volume method based on a CFD simulation toolbox. The effects of the model parameters, the inertia and the contraction ratio are numerically studied. The modified FENE model qualitatively captures the non-linear flow phenomena of polymer solution in the high elasticity number ( $\mathrm {El}$ ) flow regime observed in experiments. The results show that an accurate growth function of the elongational viscosity is the key to the prediction of the time-dependent highly asymmetric flow patterns.  相似文献

For large-particulated fluids encountered in natural debris flow, building materials, and sewage treatment, only a few rheometers exist that allow the determination of yield stress and viscosity. In the present investigation, we focus on the rheometrical analysis of the ball measuring system as a suitable tool to measure the rheology of particulated fluids up to grain sizes of 10 mm. The ball measuring system consists of a sphere that is dragged through a sample volume of approximately 0.5 l. Implemented in a standard rheometer, torques exerted on the sphere and the corresponding rotational speeds are recorded within a wide measuring range. In the second part of this investigation, six rheometric devices to determine flow curve and yield stress of fluids containing large particles with maximum grain sizes of 1 to 25 mm are compared, considering both rheological data and application in practical use. The large-scale rheometer of Coussot and Piau, the building material learning viscometer of Wallevik and Gjorv, and the ball measuring system were used for the flow curve determination and a capillary rheometer, the inclined plane test, and the slump test were used for the yield stress determination. For different coarse and concentrated sediment–water mixtures, the flow curves and the yield stresses agree well, except for the capillary rheometer, which exhibits much larger yield stress values. Differences are also noted in the measuring range of the different devices, as well as for the required sample volume that is crucial for application.  相似文献

Numerical simulations of the flow of rigid fibres through a 4:1 planar contraction, and the predicted flow pattern and fiber orientation are presented. Entirely new is the examination of the nature of the suspending matrix which may consist of either a Newtonian fluid or a polymer melt. In the case of a polymer matrix three rheological models, the Phan-Thien–Tanner, FENE-CR, and Carreau models have been used to investigate the effects of shear-thinning and elasticity on the flow and the orientation of the fibers. The effects of inertia are neglected, and the governing equations for the flow field, polymer stress, and fiber orientation are coupled and simultaneously solved. A parametric study is used to explore the effects of different dimensionless parameters on the velocity field, the fiber orientation, the pressure drop, as well as the vortex size measured by the dimensionless reattachment length. We particularly focus on the role of the fibers aspect ratio, volume fraction, and interaction coefficient which measures the intensity of fiber interaction in the suspension. Furthermore, we evaluate and compare the results of four different closure approximations: the quadratic, linear, hybrid A and T, and natural closures.  相似文献

In this work we investigate the three-dimensional laminar flow of Newtonian and viscoelastic fluids through square–square expansions. The experimental results obtained in this simple geometry provide useful data for benchmarking purposes in complex three-dimensional flows. Visualizations of the flow patterns were performed using streak photography, the velocity field of the flow was measured in detail using particle image velocimetry and additionally, pressure drop measurements were carried out. The Newtonian fluid flow was investigated for the expansion ratios of 1:2.4, 1:4 and 1:8 and the experimental results were compared with numerical predictions. For all expansion ratios studied, a corner vortex is observed downstream of the expansion and an increase of the flow inertia leads to an enhancement of the vortex size. Good agreement is found between experimental and numerical results. The flow of the two non-Newtonian fluids was investigated experimentally for expansion ratios of 1:2.4, 1:4, 1:8 and 1:12, and compared with numerical simulations using the Oldroyd-B, FENE-MCR and sPTT constitutive equations. For both the Boger and shear-thinning viscoelastic fluids, a corner vortex appears downstream of the expansion, which decreases in size and strength when the elasticity of the flow is increased. For all fluids and expansion ratios studied, the recirculations that are formed downstream of the square–square expansion exhibit a three-dimensional structure evidenced by a helical flow, which is also predicted in the numerical simulations.  相似文献

Mean and rms axial velocity-profile data obtained using laser Doppler anemometry are presented together with pressure-drop data for the flow through a concentric annulus (radius ratio κ = 0.506) of a Newtonian (a glycerine–water mixture) and non-Newtonian fluids—a semi-rigid shear-thinning polymer (a xanthan gum) and a polymer known to exhibit a yield stress (carbopol). A wider range of Reynolds numbers for the transitional flow regime is observed for the more shear-thinning fluids. In marked contrast to the Newtonian fluid, the higher shear stress on the inner wall compared to the outer wall does not lead to earlier transition for the non-Newtonian fluids where more turbulent activity is observed in the outer wall region. The mean axial velocity profiles show a slight shift (~5%) of the location of the maximum velocity towards the outer pipe wall within the transitional regime only for the Newtonian fluid.  相似文献

In chemical and oil industry gas/shear-thinning liquid two-phase flows are frequently encountered. In this work, we investigate experimentally the flow characteristics of air/shear-thinning liquid systems in horizontal and slightly inclined smooth pipes. The experiments are performed in a 9-m-long glass pipe using air and three different carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) solutions as test fluids. Flow pattern maps are built by visual observation using a high-speed camera. The observed flow patterns are stratified, plug, and slug flow. The effects of the pipe inclination and the rheology of the shear-thinning fluid in terms of flow pattern maps are presented. The predicted existence region of the stratified flow regime is compared with the experimental observation showing a good agreement. A mechanistic model valid for air/power-law slug flow is proposed and model predictions are compared to the experimental data showing a good agreement. Slug flow characteristics are investigated by the analysis of the signals of a capacitance probe: slug velocity, slug frequency, and slug lengths are measured. A new correlation for the slug frequency is proposed and the results are promising.  相似文献

Numerical solutions are presented for the flow past a sphere placed at the centreline of a cylindrical tube for Reynolds numbers ranging from 0 to 150, using a boundary element method. Fluids are modelled by a variety of constitutive equations including the Newtonian, the Carreau and the Phan-Thien-Tanner models. The influence of inertia, shear-thinning and fluid elasticity on the flow field, drag and the pressure drop force-drag ratio is examined. Some results are compared with available experimental data.  相似文献

The aim of the present study is the numerical investigation of the shear-thinning and shear-thickening effects of flow in a T-junction of rectangular ducts. The employed CFD code incorporates the SIMPLE scheme in conjunction with the finite volume method with collocated arrangement of variables. The code enables multi-block computations in domains with multiple apertures, thus coping with the two-block, two-outlet layout of the current 3D computational domain. The shear-thinning and shear-thickening behaviours of the flow are covered by changing the index n of the Power-Law model within a range from 0.20 to 1.25, and the subsequent effects are investigated by means of different flow parameters namely the Reynolds (Re) number and the boundary conditions at the outlets. Results exhibit the extent of the effect of the Re number on the velocity profiles at different positions in the domain for both Newtonian and non-Newtonian cases. Similarly, the trend of the effect of shear-thinning and shear-thickening behaviours on the flow rate ratio between inlet and outlets, in the case of equal pressure imposed on outlets, is shown.  相似文献

The motion of a single bubble rising freely in quiescent non-Newtonian viscous fluids was investigated experimentally and computationally. The non-Newtonian effects in the flow of viscous inelastic fluids are modeled by the Carreau rheological model. An improved level set approach for computing the incompressible two-phase flow with deformable free interface is used. The control volume formulation with the SIMPLEC algorithm incorporated is used to solve the governing equations on a staggered Eulerian grid. The simulation results demonstrate that the algorithm is robust for shear-thinning liquids with large density (ρ1/ρg up to 103) and high viscosity (η1/ηg up to 104). The comparison of the experimental measurements of terminal bubble shape and velocity with the computational results is satisfactory. It is shown that the local change in viscosity around a bubble greatly depends on the bubble shape and the zero-shear viscosity of non-Newtonian shear-thinning liquids. The shear-rate distribution and velocity fields are used to elucidate the formation of a region of large viscosity at the rear of a bubble as a result of the rather stagnant flow behind the bubble. The numerical results provide the basis for further investigations, such as the numerical simulation of viscoelastic fluids.  相似文献

In microfluidic devices it has been suggested a scheme for enhancing the mixing of two fluids is to use patterned, slip boundary conditions. This has been shown to induce significant transverse flow for Newtonian fluids [S.C. Hendy, M. Jasperse, J. Burnell, Effect of patterned slip on micro- and nanofluidic flows, Phys. Rev. E 72 (2005) 016303]. Here we study the effect of patterned slip on non-Newtonian fluids. Using a power-law model it is shown for shear-thickening fluids patterned slip can induce significant transverse flows comparable in size to those produced for Newtonian fluids. However, for shear-thinning fluids this transverse flow is suppressed. We predict a convenient way to increase the transverse flow for shear-thinning fluids is to use a patterned slip boundary condition coupled to a sinusoidally time-varying pressure gradient. This system is studied using a simple linearized White–Metzner model which has a power-law viscosity function [R.B. Bird, R.C. Armstrong, O. Hassager, Dynamics of Polymeric Liquids, Volume 1: Fluid Mechanics, John Wiley & Sons, New York, 1987]. In this case it is shown the two variations combine to produce transverse flow, which can be increased by increasing the frequency of the sinusoidal time-dependent fluctuation.  相似文献

To simulate filling flow in injection moulding for viscoelastic fluids, a numerical method, based on a finite element method and a finite volume method, has been developed for incompressible isothermal viscoelastic flow with moving free surfaces. The advantages of this method are, first, good applicability to arbitrarily shaped mould geometries and, second, accurate treatment for boundary conditions on the free surface. Typical filling flows are simulated, namely filling flow into a 1:4 expansion cavity with and without an obstacle. Numerical results predict the position of weld lines and air-traps. The method also indicates the effects of elongational flow on molecular orientation.  相似文献
