The propagation of electromagnetic waves along open periodic, dielectric waveguides is formulated in the case that surface wave is guided and propagates normally to the corrugation. Our approximate analysis with the propagation characteristics is to consider a corresponding bounded waveguide problem in which perfect electric or magnetic walls are introduced, and the periodic corrugation is regarded as consisting of step discontinuities connected by a length of uniform slab waveguide. By properly taking into account of both surface modes and only a few non-surface-modes, a novel network approach is proposed for characterizing step discontinuity based on the generalized conservation of complex power technique (GCCPT). Employing solution selection rule (SSR), we can readily derive propagation characteristics in the Bragg interaction region. A number of numerical results are shown to demonstrate the usefulness of our approach.  相似文献

The dispersion characteristics of a circular cylindrical waveguide with periodic surface corrugations consisting of rectangular grooves with smoothing are examined using the Space Harmonic Method (SHM). The whole structure is divided into two regions, one describing the propagation volume and one inside the grooves. In the first region, the Floquet theorem is applicable and the field distribution is expressed as a summation of spatial Bloch components, whereas in the second one an appropriate Fourier expansion of standing waves is used. Applying the boundary conditions an infinite system of equations is obtained, which is solved numerically by truncation. Several cases are considered, including the limiting cases of a sinusoidal and a rectangular corrugation profile, to check the accuracy of the method proposed as well as its dependence on the corrugation profile. Numerical results are presented only for transverse magnetic modes, although the formalism can be easily extended to include all kinds of waves that can in principle propagate in such a structure.  相似文献

In this paper, we show how the coupling of light into a photonic crystal waveguide can be greatly enhanced by creating a periodic modulation in the dielectric structure surrounding the entrance of the waveguide. In this way, surface modes supported by the system can funnel the light that impinges onto the surface into the interior of the waveguide. Moreover, we also demonstrate that the shape and direction of the beam that emerges from the structure can be tailored by constructing a periodic corrugation near the exit side of the waveguide.  相似文献

Abstract

Starting from the rigorous excitation equation, the propagation of waves through a 2D waveguide with the periodically corrugated finite-length insert is examined in detail. The corrugation profile is chosen to obey the property that its amplitude is small as compared to the waveguide width, whereas the sharpness of the asperities is arbitrarily large. With the aid of the method of mode separation, which was developed earlier for inhomogeneous-in-bulk waveguide systems [Waves Random Media 2000; 10: 395], the corrugated segment of the waveguide is shown to serve as the effective scattering barrier whose width is coincident with the length of the insert and the average height is controlled by the sharpness of boundary asperities. Due to this barrier, the mode spectrum of the waveguide can be substantially rarefied and adjusted so as to reduce the number of extended modes to the value arbitrarily less than that in the absence of corrugation (up to zero), without changing considerably the waveguide average width.  相似文献

Millimetre wave corrugated waveguide-horn structures are used as both single-moded and multi-moded bolometer feeds in a number of cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments (e.g. PLANCK, Archeops, QUaD). Such horns tend to be employed over a relatively wide bandwidth and for single-moded horns the waveguide acts as the high pass filter. In this paper we report on our investigation on how the waveguide details determine the exact location of the low frequency band edge of such corrugated horns. A sharp step-like band edge, below which there is negligible propagation, is ideally required. Furthermore any leakage below the expected cut-off, possible in corrugated guides, could lead to non-idealised cross-polar effects. Typically deeper corrugations are required in the waveguide filter than at the horn aperture for wide bandwidth operation, thus necessitating a transition section over which the corrugation depth smoothly varies. An electromagnetic mode matching technique and a surface impedance hybrid mode model are used to compute the horn transmission characteristics. We have also undertaken laboratory measurements of the band edge of prototype corrugated horns in order to test the models.  相似文献

The dispersion characteristics of a circular dielectric rod waveguide with period corrugations are analyzed with the mode matching method. After obtaining the rigorous dispersion equation, the dispersion curve for TE01 mode exciting is calculated by the improved Newton's method. The variations of the normalized center frequency and width as well as the maximum attenuation constant of the stopband with the geometry parameters of the periodic corrugation structure are given respectively. The convergence properties of numerical solutions are also discussed. Based on the analysis, some useful guidelines for the design of the band-rejection filters consisting of the periodic structure are thereby suggested.  相似文献

The propagation characteristics of metal clad planar optical waveguide as a function of wavelength are investigated theoretically for Al, Ag, and Au. The results obtained show that attenuation of the propagation modes in these guides is highly dependent on wavelength, which can be used to design an efficient integrated optical waveguide polarizer with high extinction ratios, or to select the wavelength for the surface plasmon based metal clad optical waveguide sensors. It is observed that Al is the only metal that still supports the surface plasmons in the UV region.  相似文献

The electrodynamic properties of coaxial two-dimensional Bragg resonators with two-dimensional distributed feedback are analyzed. These resonators are made of coaxial waveguide sections with doubly periodic corrugation, which provides coupling and mutual scattering of four partial waves. Two of them propagate along the waveguide, while the other two propagate in the transverse (azimuthal) direction. It is shown that the high azimuthal index selectivity of two-dimensional Bragg resonators may be related to a qualitative difference in topology of the dispersion characteristics of azimuth-symmetric and asymmetric normal waves propagating in infinite waveguides of such a geometry. For the finite-length systems used as two-dimensional Bragg resonators, the eigenmode spectrum is found for two types of boundary conditions that correspond to the limiting cases of perfectly matched (open) systems and, conversely, of systems closed for the extraction of transverse electromagnetic fluxes. Perimeter-to-length ratios of the resonator at which the Q factor of the fundamental azimuth-symmetric mode is greater than those of the other modes are determined. The applicability domain of the geometrical approach, which was earlier applied to two-dimensional Bragg resonators, is discussed.  相似文献

In this paper, the propagation characteristics of NRD waveguide loaded with periodic metallic strips are analyzed in terms of the method of lines. We demonstrate optical control over the transmission of terahertz (THz) radiation through a single subwavelength slit in an otherwise opaque silicon wafer. The addition of periodic corrugation on each side of the wafer allows coupling to surface plasmon polaritons, so that light not impinging directly on the slit can contribute to the transmission. A significant enhancement of the THz transmission can be achieved through control of the surface wave propagation length by excitation at optical wavelengths. The observed transmission increase is in distinct contrast to the reduction reported for photoexcitation of arrays of holes in semiconductors.  相似文献

Warm plasma theory is used to investigate the propagation of electromagnetic waves in a plasma filled parallel plate waveguide with one boundary plate corrugated. Dispersion relations for TE- and TM-modes are derived and it is found that the propagation of TE-modes is unaffected by corrugation of one boundary plane while the propagation of TM-modes is affected by it. For TM-modes the wave numberk depends on the frequency ta as well as on the distance through which the wave is propagated.The authors take the opportunity to thank Professor M. L. A simplified mathematical model of two-dimensionally(2D) periodic thin-film wavegmide is proposed and the characteristics of wave propagation are shown to be governed by a five-term recurrence relation with dyadic admittance coefficients. The generalized transverse resonance method can be used to analyze any complicated 2D periodic thin-film waveguide. The dispersion characteristics are described by both approximation analysis and numerical calculation. The theoretical explanation and physical understanding of the effecis of 2D periodic modulation provided by our analysis and resulis can give sound support to the engineering applications.  相似文献

We present a comprehensive experimental study of terahertz (THz) wave propagation utilizing surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) on the interfaces of a thin dielectric core layer sandwiched between two corrugated metallic claddings. THz wave impinges on the structured surfaces at normal incidence. Long-lasting oscillation propagation features are observed in the temporal waveform after traveling through the periodic arrays. The enhanced THz transmission can be achieved due to the coupling between incident waves to SPPs at the bottom and top interfaces. The finite element method is used to simulate the field distribution and the transmission mode in the waveguide. The hybrid waveguide with low absorption has great potential applications in THz integrated devices.  相似文献

We present the experimental observation of a spatial vector soliton formed by counterpropagation of coherent optical fields. This is to our knowledge the first observation of a vector soliton in which the induced waveguide (potential) is periodic in the propagation direction. This vector soliton induces a waveguide and a thick grating within the waveguide, which can be used as a tunable optical waveguide filter.  相似文献

We study a waveguide with layered-periodic walls for different relations between the dielectric permittivities of the central (guiding) layer and the superlattice layers. The characteristics of a three-mode coupling in a passive dielectric waveguide are investigated for the case of even TE modes. The index is assumed to have a doubly periodic harmonic variation in the propagation direction. By a singular perturbation procedure using multiple space scales, the coupled-mode equations governing the Bragg interactions are systematically deduced. The three-mode coupling causes a stop band in frequency and the characteristics of the resulting evanescent mode are analyzed. For a periodic dielectric waveguide of finite length, the three coupled-mode equations are solved subject to suitable boundary conditions to obtain the reflection and the transmission coefficients. The frequency response of the reflection and the transmission coefficients are investigated and compared with the results of the pair of corresponding two-mode couplings. Representative numerical results are presented to illustrate the characteristics of the interaction of the three modes.  相似文献

塑料类高分子材料甲基丙烯酸甲酯-亚克力(PMMA)圆柱中亚音速Rayleigh波低频隧穿共振可引起反向散射增强,在低频标准散射体设计等领域具有重要应用价值.提出一种微弱形变的规则波纹表面结构,可实现水中PMMA圆柱反向散射低频共振频率的无源调控.利用微扰法推导了水中微弱形变规则波纹圆柱反向散射低频共振频率偏移的近似解,讨论了波纹微扰系数、周期对规则波纹圆柱共振频率偏移的影响规律.基于Rayleigh波相位匹配方法分析了低频共振频率偏移的机理.研究表明:微弱形变规则波纹圆柱中亚音速Rayleigh波沿微弱形变波纹表面传播,与光滑圆柱体相比,传播路径的改变引起Rayleigh波传播相位变化,导致了Rayleigh波低频共振频率发生偏移.最后开展了微弱形变规则波纹圆柱体声散射特性水池实验,获取了其反向散射共振频率,明显观察到了规则波纹圆柱共振频率偏移现象,与理论预报结果吻合较好.  相似文献
