We report a density functional theory study of confinement induced solid/solid phase transitions in a thin film (modeled as methane) at T=0. The solid film is confined by two graphite surfaces represented by a mean-field potential. As the wall separation is varied the structure of the confined film changes, which influences its density and the solvation force. Using the directly accessible grand canonical potential density we determine the stable phases and calculate the exact location of the phase transitions. We observe a series of phases having square and triangular symmetry. At low wall separations we find zig-zag buckling and an asymmetric buckled phase, whose structure is consistent with the strongest buckling instability of a triangular monolayer predicted by Chou and Nelson [Phys. Rev. E 48, 4611 (1993)] but, to our knowledge, has not been observed as a stable phase before. We find that the two-dimensional order parameters Psi(4) (square symmetry) and Psi(6) (triangular symmetry) show unphysical behavior in the transition region between square and triangular symmetry. Thus, in the present model they fail to predict the right location of the phase transitions.  相似文献

In this communication, we report the coexistence of liquid and solid phases of room temperature ionic liquid (IL) [Bmim][PF6] on mica surfaces, observed by tapping mode atomic force microscopy (AFM) in air. Multilayers as well as drop-on-the-layer structures of the ionic liquid are revealed. The solid layers were very stable, and their orientations were affected by the mica lattice, indicating that the ionic liquid undergoes a template-induced ordering process. These results are helpful for advancing the understanding of interfacial structures of ILs on solid surfaces, the analogous structural patterns in both of its solid and liquid phases, and its heterogeneity.  相似文献

A new molecular dynamics simulation technique for simulating fluids in confinement [H. Eslami, F. Mozaffari, J. Moghadasi, F. Müller-Plathe, J. Chem. Phys. 129 (2008) 194702] is employed to simulate the diffusion coefficient of nanoconfined Lennard-Jones fluid. The diffusing fluid is liquid Ar and the confining surfaces are solid Ar fcc (100) surfaces, which are kept frozen during the simulation. In this simulation just the fluid in confinement is simulated at a constant temperature and a constant parallel component of pressure, which is assumed to be equal to the bulk pressure. It is shown that the calculated parallel (to the surfaces) component of the diffusion coefficients depends on the distance between the surfaces (pore size) and shows oscillatory behavior with respect to the intersurface separations. Our results show that on formation of well-organized layers between the surfaces, the parallel diffusion coefficients decrease considerably with respect to the bulk fluid. The effect of pressure on the parallel diffusion coefficients has also been studied. Better organized layers, and hence, lower diffusion coefficients are observed with increasing the pressure.  相似文献

The nanotribological responses of a series of nonionic polyoxyethylene surfactants (Tween 20, Tween 40, Tween 60, and Tween 80) were investigated after they were adsorbed from aqueous solution onto atomically smooth hydrophobic substrates. The hydrophobic surfaces were composed of a condensed monolayer of octadecyltriethoxysilane (OTE; contact angle theta>110 degrees ). The nanorheological measurements were performed using a modified surface forces apparatus after coating atomically smooth mica with these OTE monolayers, while adsorption measurements were performed using phase-modulated ellipsometry on silicon wafers coated with these same monolayers. The minimum surface-surface separation observed under high load in friction studies agreed quantitatively with the thickness obtained from ellipsometry. For Tweens 20, 40, and 60, the thickness of the adsorbed film increases with increasing alkyl chain length. Systematic investigations of the nanorheological response showed that there is a "solid-like" elastic response from confined surfactant layers, which is the case for the smallest separations to separations up to slightly larger than twice the adsorbed film thickness. In kinetic friction, these confined layers are characterized by a shear stress of approximately 3 MPa with minimal dependence on shear rate. The magnitude of the sliding shear stress is the same as the apparent yield stress at approximately 3 MPa; it is independent of alkyl chain length within the Tween family of surfactants and corresponds to a nominal friction coefficient of mu approximately 1. A similar friction coefficient is observed for boundary lubrication on the macroscopic scale in a tribometer utilizing hydrophobic surfaces and mu approximately 1.1 for Tweens 20, 40, and 60. These results suggest that while Tween molecules adsorb onto hydrophobic surfaces to form a robust separating layer, the lubricating properties of these layers are dominated by a highly dissipative slip plane, the same for all alkyl chain lengths.  相似文献

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have been performed to investigate the shear dynamics of hydration layers of the thickness of D=0.61-2.44 nm confined between two mica surfaces. Emphases are placed on the external shear response and internal relaxation properties of aqueous films. For D=0.92-2.44 nm liquid phase, the shear responses are fluidic and similar to those observed in surface force balance experiments [U. Raviv and J. Klein, Science 297, 1540 (2002)]. However, for the bilayer ice (D=0.61 nm) [Y. S. Leng and P. T. Cummings, J. Chem. Phys. 124, 74711 (2006)] significant shear enhancement and shear thinning over a wide range of shear rates in MD regime are observed. The rotational relaxation time of water molecules in this bilayer ice is found to be as high as 0.017 ms (10(-5) s). Extrapolating the shear rate to the inverse of this longest relaxation time, we obtain a very high shear viscosity for the bilayer ice, which is also observed quite recently for D< or =0.6+/-0.3 nm hydration layers [H. Sakuma et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 46104 (2006)]. We further investigate the boundary slip of water molecules and hydrated K(+) ions and concluded that no-slip boundary condition should hold for aqueous salt solution under extreme confinement between hydrophilic mica surfaces, provided that the confined film is of Newtonian fluid.  相似文献

Molecular dynamics simulations demonstrate that there are at least two classes of quasi-two-dimensional solid water into which liquid water confined between hydrophobic surfaces freezes spontaneously and whose hydrogen-bond networks are as fully connected as those of bulk ice. One of them is the monolayer ice and the other is the bilayer solid which takes either a crystalline or an amorphous form. Here we present the phase transformations among liquid, bilayer amorphous (or crystalline) ice, and monolayer ice phases at various thermodynamic conditions, then determine curves of melting, freezing, and solid-solid structural change on the isostress planes where temperature and intersurface distance are variable, and finally we propose a phase diagram of the confined water in the temperature-pressure-distance space.  相似文献

Using self-consistent-field and density-functional theories, we first investigate colloidal self-assembly of colloid-polymer films confined between two soft surfaces grafted by polymers. With increasing colloidal concentrations, the film undergoes a series of transitions from disordered liquid --> sparse square --> hexagonal (or mixed square-hexagonal) --> dense square --> cylindrical structures in a plane, which results from the competition between the entropic elasticity of polymer brushes and the steric packing effect of colloidal particles. A phase diagram displays the stable regions of different in-layer ordering structures as the colloidal concentration is varied and layering transitions as the polymer-grafted density is decreased. Our results show a new control mechanism to stabilize the ordering of structures within the films.  相似文献

The structure of N,N-dimethylethylenediammonium pentachloroantimonate(III), [(CH3)2NH(CH2)2NH3][SbCl5], NNDP, was investigated at 100 and 15 K at ambient pressure, as well as at pressures up to 4.00 GPa at room temperature in the diamond-anvil cell. The stable structure at low temperatures and low pressures consists of isolated [SbCl5]2- anions and [(CH3)2NH(CH2)2NH3]2+ cations. The inorganic anions have a distorted square pyramidal geometry. They are arranged in linear chains parallel to the c axis. In contrast to the low-temperature studies, where no phase transition was detected, pressure induces a P2(1)/c --> P2(1)/n phase transition between 0.55 and 1.00 GPa, accompanied by a doubling of the a unit-cell parameter. This solid-solid transition results from changes in the electron configuration of the Sb(III) atom and formation of the Sb-Cl bridging bonds between inorganic polyhedra to form, at approximately 1.0 GPa, isolated [Sb2Cl10]4- units consisting of [SbCl6]3- octahedra and [SbCl5]2- square pyramids connected by a common corner. The intermolecular distances continuously decrease with further increase in pressure, and at approximately 3.1 GPa, zigzag [{SbCl5}n]2n- chains containing corner-sharing [SbCl6]3- octahedra are formed. The unit-cell volume of NNDP decreases by 18.15% between room pressure and 4.00 GPa. The linear distortions of the [SbCl5]2- and [SbCl6]3- polyhedra decrease with increasing pressure and decreasing temperature and indicate a reduction in the stereochemical activity of the lone electron pair on the Sb(III) atom.  相似文献

Normal and shear forces were measured as a function of surface separation, D, between hydrophobized mica surfaces bearing layers of a hydrophobic-polyelectrolytic diblock copolymer, poly(methyl methacrylate)- block-poly(sodium sulfonated glycidyl methacrylate) copolymer (PMMA- b-PSGMA). The copolymers were attached to each hydrophobized surface by their hydrophobic PMMA moieties with the nonadsorbing polyelectrolytic PSGMA tails extending into the aqueous medium to form a polyelectrolyte brush. Following overnight incubation in 10 (-4) w/v aqueous solution of the copolymer, the strong hydrophobic attraction between the hydrophobized mica surfaces across water was replaced by strongly repulsive normal forces between them. These were attributed to the osmotic repulsion arising from the confined counterions at long-range, together with steric repulsion between the compressed brush layers at shorter range. The corresponding shear forces on sliding the surfaces were extremely low and below our detection limit (+/-20-30 nN), even when compressed down to a volume fraction close to unity. On further compression, very weak shear forces (130 +/- 30 nN) were measured due to the increase in the effective viscous drag experienced by the compressed, sliding layers. At separations corresponding to pressures of a few atmospheres, the shearing motion led to abrupt removal of most of the chains out of the gap, and the surfaces jumped into adhesive contact. The extremely low frictional forces between the charged brushes (prior to their removal) is attributed to the exceptional resistance to mutual interpenetration displayed by the compressed, counterion-swollen brushes, together with the fluidity of the hydration layers surrounding the charged, rubbing polymer segments.  相似文献

Superlubricity using repulsive van der Waals forces   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Using colloid probe atomic force microscopy, we show that if repulsive van der Waals forces exist between two surfaces prior to their contact then friction is essentially precluded and supersliding is achieved. The friction measurements presented here are of the same order as the lowest ever recorded friction coefficients in liquid, though they are achieved by a completely different approach. A gold sphere attached to an AFM cantilever is forced to interact with a smooth Teflon surface (templated on mica). In cyclohexane, a repulsive van der Waals force is observed that diverges at short separations. The friction coefficient associated with this system is on the order of 0.0003. When the refractive index of the liquid is changed, the force can be tuned from repulsive to attractive and adhesive. The friction coefficient increases as the Hamaker constant becomes more positive and the divergent repulsive force, which prevents solid-solid contact, gets switched off.  相似文献

We report Monte Carlo simulation results for freezing of Lennard-Jones carbon tetrachloride confined within model multiwalled carbon nanotubes of different diameters. The structure and thermodynamic stability of the confined phases, as well as the transition temperatures, were determined from parallel tempering grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations and free-energy calculations. The simulations show that the adsorbate forms concentric molecular layers that solidify into defective quasi-two-dimensional hexagonal crystals. Freezing in such concentric layers occurs via intermediate phases that show remnants of hexatic behavior, similar to the freezing mechanism observed for slit pores in previous works. The adsorbate molecules in the inner regions of the pore also exhibit changes in their properties upon reduction of temperature. The structural changes in the different regions of adsorbate occur at temperatures above or below the bulk freezing point, depending on pore diameter and distance of the adsorbate molecules from the pore wall. The simulations show evidence of a rich phase behavior in confinement; a number of phases, some of them inhomogeneous, were observed for the pore sizes considered. The multiple transition temperatures obtained from the simulations were found to be in good agreement with recent dielectric relaxation spectroscopy experiments for CCl(4) confined within multiwalled carbon nanotubes.  相似文献

The orientational relaxation dynamics of water confined between mica surfaces is investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. The study illustrates the wide heterogeneity that exists in the dynamics of water adjacent to a strongly hydrophilic surface such as mica. Analysis of the survival probabilities in different layers is carried out by normalizing the corresponding relaxation times with bulk water layers of similar thickness. A 10-fold increase in the survival times is observed for water directly in contact with the mica surface and a non-monotonic variation in the survival times is observed moving away from the mica surface to the bulk-like interior. The orientational relaxation time is highest for water in the contact layer, decreasing monotonically away from the surface. In all cases the ratio of the relaxation times of the 1st and 2nd rank Legendre polynomials of the HH bond vector is found to lie between 1.5 and 1.9 indicating that the reorientational relaxation in the different water layers is governed by jump dynamics. The orientational dynamics of water in the contact layer is particularly novel and is found to undergo distinct two-dimensional hydrogen bond jump reorientational dynamics with an average waiting time of 4.97 ps. The waiting time distribution is found to possess a long tail extending beyond 15 ps. Unlike previously observed jump dynamics in bulk water and other surfaces, jump events in the mica contact layer occur between hydrogen bonds formed by the water molecule and acceptor oxygens on the mica surface. Despite slowing down of the water orientational relaxation near the surface, life-times of water in the hydration shell of the K(+) ion are comparable to that observed in bulk salt solutions.  相似文献

Two new nematogens, copper complexes derived from Schiff's bases, bis(N-n-pentyl-4-[(4'-decyloxy)benzoyloxy]salicylaldiminate) copper(II) (labelled as Cu5) and bis(N-(4'-n-pentoxyphenyl)-4-[(4'-decyloxy)benzoyloxy]salicylaldiminate) copper(II) (CuO5) have been studied by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy at different temperatures in their different mesophases. Both compounds show a nematic phase and CuO5 also presents a smectic C mesophase at lower temperatures. The copper coordination geometry in frozen solutions in toluene and in concentrated samples is square planar, while in solutions in their analogous zinc complexes, a twist of the N-Cu-O coordination planes is found. In the stable solid phases, the spectra reveal the existence of intermolecular magnetic exchange coupling. The fluid phases of Cu5 can be frozen forming different structures that depend on the freezing process rate. In Cu5 the exchange interaction is strongly reduced in the nematic phase because of the loss of positional correlation of the molecules. The EPR spectra indicate differences in the local arrangement of this mesophase compared to the nematic phases of cylindrically symmetric molecules.  相似文献

Employing the colloidal probe AFM technique we have investigated normal and friction forces between flat mica surfaces and silica particles coated with mucin and combined mucin-chitosan layers in presence and absence of anionic surfactant, SDS, in 30 mM NaCl solution. We have shown that the normal interactions between mucin coated mica and silica surfaces are dominated by long-range steric repulsion on both compression and decompression. Friction forces between such mucin layers are characterized by a low effective friction coefficient, mu(eff)=0.03+/-0.02, which is lower than the value of 0.13+/-0.02 observed when chitosan layers were adsorbed. Forces between combined mucin-chitosan layers have also been measured. Adsorption of chitosan on mucin results in considerable compaction of the layer, and development of attractive forces detectable on separation. Friction between mucin-chitosan layers in 30 mM NaCl solution is high, with mu(eff) approximately 0.4. Adsorption of additional mucin to this layer results in no improvement with respect to lubrication as compared to the mucin-chitosan layer, and mu(eff) approximately 0.4 is observed. We argue that the layers containing both mucin and chitosan are not strictly layered but rather strongly entangled. As a result attractive interactions between oppositely charged moieties of sialic acid residues from mucin and amine groups from chitosan residing on the opposing surfaces contribute to the increased friction. The effects of SDS on normal and friction forces between combined mucin-chitosan layers were also investigated. The relation between surface interactions and friction properties is discussed.  相似文献

In this work we revisit the surface forces measured between two atomically flat mica surfaces submerged in a reservoir of potassium nitrate (KNO(3)) solution. We consider a comprehensive range of concentrations from 0.08 mM to 2.6 M. The significantly improved resolution available from the extended surface force apparatus (eSFA) allows the distinction of hydration structures and hydrated-ion correlations. Above concentrations of 0.3 mM, hydrated-ion correlations give rise to multiple collective transitions (4 ± 1 ?) in the electrical double layers upon interpenetration. These features are interpreted as the result of hydrated-ion ordering (e.g. layering), in contrast to the traditional interpretation invoking water layering. The hydrated-ion layer adjacent to the surface (i.e. outer Helmholtz layer) is particularly well defined and plays a distinctive role. It can be either collectively expelled in a 5.8 ± 0.3 ? film-thickness transition or collectively forced to associate with the surface by external mechanical work. The latter is observed as a characteristic 2.9 ± 0.3 ? film-thickness transition along with an abrupt decrease of surface adhesion at concentrations above 1 mM. At concentrations as low as 20 mM, attractive surface forces are measured in deviation to the DLVO theory. The hydration number in the confined electrolyte seems to be significantly below that of the bulk. A 1-3 nm thick ionic layer solidifies at the surfaces at concentrations >100 mM, i.e. below bulk saturation.  相似文献

Colloid probe atomic force microscopy has been used to study the nanotribological properties of the silica-ethylammonium nitrate (EAN)-mica system. Normal force curve measurements reveal a series of steps at separations that are consistent with the size of an EAN ion pair (0.5 nm) due to displacement of structured solvent layers as the two surfaces are brought together. At closest separations, two steps are measured with widths of 0.3 nm and 0.1 nm, which are too small to be due to an ion pair layer. The 0.3 nm step is attributed to a partial displacement of a silica-bound cation-rich layer, with residual cations being removed in the subsequent 0.1 nm step. Lateral force measurements reveal that the frictional response is dependent on the number of ion pair layers between the surfaces. At low forces, when there is more than a single layer of EAN between silica and mica, the lateral force increases relatively steeply with applied load, and is independent of the sliding speed. At intermediate forces, a single layer of cations in an intercalated bilayer structure is present between the surfaces. The friction coefficient (μ) increases logarithmically with sliding speed consistent with an activated, discontinuous sliding process. At high force, μ is small and once again, independent of sliding velocity. The adsorbed cation layer is bound primarily to mica and compressed by the high normal force. This robust layering with a well-defined sliding plane permits the colloid probe to slide easily over the mica surface.  相似文献

Phase diagram is calculated by a recently proposed third-order thermodynamic perturbation theory (TPT) for fluid phase and a recently proposed first-order TPT for solid phases; the underlying interparticle potential consists of a hard sphere repulsion and a perturbation tail of an attractive inverse power law type or Yukawa type whose range varies with bulk densities. It is found that besides usual phase transitions associated with density-independent potentials, the density dependence of the perturbation tail evokes some additional novel phase transitions including isostructural solid-solid transition and liquid-liquid transition. Novel triple points are also exhibited which includes stable fluid (vapor or liquid)-face-centered cubic(fcc)-fcc and liquid-liquid-fcc, metastable liquid-body-centered cubic(bcc)-bcc. It also is found that the phase diagram sensitively depends on the density dependence and the concrete mathematical form of the underlying potentials. Some of the disclosed novel transitions has been observed experimentally in complex fluids and molecular liquids, while others still remain to be experimentally verified.  相似文献

We use molecular dynamics as a tool to understand the structure and phase transitions [Osman, M. A.; et al. J. Phys. Chem. B 2000, 104, 4433-4439. Osman, M. A.; et al. J. Phys. Chem. B 2002, 106, 653-662] in alkylammonium micas. The consistent force field 91 is extended for accurate simulation of mica and related minerals. We investigate mica sheets with 12 octadecyltrimethylammonium (C(18)) ions or 12 dioctadecyldimethylammonium (2C(18)) ions, respectively, as single and layered structures at different temperatures with periodicity in the xy plane by NVT dynamics. The alkylammonium ions reside preferably above the cavities in the mica surface with an aluminum-rich boundary. The nitrogen atoms are 380-390 pm away from the superficial silicon-aluminum plane. With increasing temperature, rearrangements of C(18) ions on the mica surface are found, while 2C(18) ions remain tethered due to geometric restraints. We present basal-plane spacings in the duplicate structures, tilt angles of the alkyl chains, and gauche-trans ratios to analyze the chain conformation. Agreement with experimental data, where available, is quantitative. In C(18)-mica with less than 100% alkali-ion exchange, the disordered C(18) rods in the island structures [Hayes, W. A.; Schwartz, D. K. Langmuir 1998, 14, 5913-5917] break at 40 degrees C. At 60 degrees C, the headgroups of the C(18) alkyl chains rearrange on the mica surface, and the broken chain backbones assume a coillike structure. The C(18)-mica obtained on fast cooling of this phase is metastable due to slow reverse rearrangements of the headgroups. In 2C(18)-mica with 70-80% ion exchange, the alkali ions are interspersed between the alkyl chains, corresponding to a single phase on the surface. The observed phase transition at approximately 53 degrees C involves an increase of chain disorder (partial melting) of the 2C(18) ions without significant rearrangements on the mica surface. We propose a geometric parameter lambda for the saturation of the surface with alkyl chains, which determines the preferred self-assembly pattern, that is, islands, intermediate, or continuous. lambda allows the calculation of tilt angles in continuous layers on mica or other surfaces. The thermal decomposition seems to be a Hofmann elimination with mica as a base-template.  相似文献
