With each metric space (X,d) we can associate a bornological space (X,Bd) where Bd is the set of all subsets of X with finite diameter. Equivalently, Bd is the set of all subsets of X that are contained in a ball with finite radius. If the metric d can attain the value infinite, then the set of all subsets with finite diameter is no longer a bornology. Moreover, if d is no longer symmetric, then the set of subsets with finite diameter does not coincide with the set of subsets that are contained in a ball with finite radius. In this text we will introduce two structures that capture the concept of boundedness in both symmetric and non-symmetric extended metric spaces.  相似文献

Let X be a nonarchimedean space and C be the union of all compact open subsets of X. The following conditions are listed in increasing order of generality. (Conditions 2 and 3 are equivalent.) 1. X is perfect; 2. C is an Fσ in X; 3. C? is metrizable; 4. X is orderable. It is also shown that X is orderable if C??C is scattered or X is a GO space with countably many pseudogaps. An example is given of a non-orderable, totally disconnected, GO space with just one pseudogap.  相似文献

This paper studies the compact-open topology on the set KC(X) of all real-valued functions defined on a Tychonoff space, which are continuous on compact subsets of X. In addition to metrizability, separability and second countability of this topology on KC(X), various kinds of topological properties of this topology are studied in detail. Actually the motivation for studying the compact-open topology on KC(X) lies in the attempt of having a simpler proof for the characterization of a completeness property of the compact-open topology on C(X), the set of all real-valued continuous functions on X.  相似文献

A space X is κ-resolvable (resp. almost κ-resolvable) if it contains κ dense sets that are pairwise disjoint (resp. almost disjoint over the ideal of nowhere dense subsets of X).Answering a problem raised by Juhász, Soukup, and Szentmiklóssy, and improving a consistency result of Comfort and Hu, we prove, in ZFC, that for every infinite cardinal κ there is an almost κ2-resolvable but not ω1-resolvable space of dispersion character κ.  相似文献

We show that a metrizable space Y is completely metrizable if there is a continuous surjection f:XY such that the images of open (clopen) subsets of the (0-dimensional paracompact) ?ech-complete space X are resolvable subsets of Y (in particular, e.g., the elements of the smallest algebra generated by open sets in Y).  相似文献

For a non-compact metrizable space X, let E(X) be the set of all one-point metrizable extensions of X, and when X is locally compact, let EK(X) denote the set of all locally compact elements of E(X) and be the order-anti-isomorphism (onto its image) defined in [M. Henriksen, L. Janos, R.G. Woods, Properties of one-point completions of a non-compact metrizable space, Comment. Math. Univ. Carolin. 46 (2005) 105-123; in short HJW]. By definition λ(Y)=?n<ωclβX(UnX)\X, where Y=X∪{p}∈E(X) and {Un}n<ω is an open base at p in Y. We characterize the elements of the image of λ as exactly those non-empty zero-sets of βX which miss X, and the elements of the image of EK(X) under λ, as those which are moreover clopen in βX\X. This answers a question of [HJW]. We then study the relation between E(X) and EK(X) and their order structures, and introduce a subset ES(X) of E(X). We conclude with some theorems on the cardinality of the sets E(X) and EK(X), and some open questions.  相似文献

For a Tychonoff space X, we denote by Cλ(X) the space of all real-valued continuous functions on X with set-open topology. In this paper, we study the topological-algebraic properties of Cλ(X). Our main results state that (1) Cλ(X) is a topological vector space (a topological group) iff λ is a family of C-compact sets and Cλ(X)=Cλ(X), where λ consists of all C-compact subsets of every set of λ. In particular, if Cλ(X) is a topological group, then the set-open topology coincides with the topology of uniform convergence on a family λ; (2) a topological group Cλ(X) is ω-narrow iff λ is a family of metrizable compact subsets of X.  相似文献

For every space X let K(X) be the set of all compact subsets of X. Christensen [J.P.R. Christensen, Necessary and sufficient conditions for measurability of certain sets of closed subsets, Math. Ann. 200 (1973) 189-193] proved that if X,Y are separable metrizable spaces and F:K(X)→K(Y) is a monotone map such that any LK(Y) is covered by F(K) for some KK(X), then Y is complete provided X is complete. It is well known [J. Baars, J. de Groot, J. Pelant, Function spaces of completely metrizable space, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 340 (1993) 871-879] that this result is not true for non-separable spaces. In this paper we discuss some additional properties of F which guarantee the validity of Christensen's result for more general spaces.  相似文献

Given two compatible metrics on a metrizable space X. It is well known that they give rise to the same Hausdorff hypertopologies and upper Hausdorff hypertopologies, on the collection of all closed subsets of X, if and only if they are uniformly equivalent. This is no longer true for the lower Hausdorff hypertopology; indeed a weaker condition is needed, and this condition has been found by Costantini and Vitolo.  相似文献

Say that a cardinal number κ is small relative to the space X if κ<Δ(X), where Δ(X) is the least cardinality of a non-empty open set in X. We prove that no Baire metric space can be covered by a small number of discrete sets, and give some generalizations. We show a ZFC example of a regular Baire σ-space and a consistent example of a normal Baire Moore space which can be covered by a small number of discrete sets. Our main result states that the hyperspace of convex compact subsets of a compact convex subset X in a locally convex space is an absolute retract if and only if X is an absolute retract of weight ?ω1. It is also proved that the hyperspace of convex compact subsets of the Tychonov cube Iω1 is homeomorphic to Iω1. An analogous result is also proved for the cone over Iω1. Our proofs are based on analysis of maps of hyperspaces of compact convex subsets, in particular, selection theorems for such maps are proved.  相似文献

A space X is said to satisfy condition (C) if for every Y?X with |Y|=ω1, any family G of open subsets of Y with |G|=ω1 has a countable network. It is easy to see that if X satisfies condition (C), then its Pixley-Roy hyperspace F[X] is CCC. We study conditions under which the Hausdorff quasi-uniformity UH of a quasi-uniform space (X,U) on the set P0(X) of the nonempty subsets of X is bicomplete.Indeed we present an explicit method to construct the bicompletion of the T0-quotient of the Hausdorff quasi-uniformity of a quasi-uniform space. It is used to find a characterization of those quasi-uniform T0-spaces (X,U) for which the Hausdorff quasi-uniformity of their bicompletion on is bicomplete.  相似文献

In this paper we show that if X is an infinite compactum cleavable over an ordinal, then X must be homeomorphic to an ordinal. X must also therefore be a LOTS. This answers two fundamental questions in the area of cleavability. We also leave it as an open question whether cleavability of an infinite compactum X over an ordinal λ implies X is embeddable into λ.  相似文献

A space X is said to be selectively separable (=M-separable) if for each sequence {Dn:nω} of dense subsets of X, there are finite sets FnDn (nω) such that ?{Fn:nω} is dense in X. On selective separability and its variations, we show the following: (1) Selective separability, R-separability and GN-separability are preserved under finite unions; (2) Assuming CH (the continuum hypothesis), there is a countable regular maximal R-separable space X such that X2 is not selectively separable; (3) c{0,1} has a selectively separable, countable and dense subset S such that the group generated by S is not selectively separable. These answer some questions posed in Bella et al. (2008) [7].  相似文献

For X a metrizable space and (Y,ρ) a metric space, with Y pathwise connected, we compute the density of (C(X,(Y,ρ)),σ)—the space of all continuous functions from X to (Y,ρ), endowed with the supremum metric σ. Also, for (X,d) a metric space and (Y,‖⋅‖) a normed space, we compute the density of (UC((X,d),(Y,ρ)),σ) (the space of all uniformly continuous functions from (X,d) to (Y,ρ), where ρ is the metric induced on Y by ‖⋅‖). We also prove that the latter result extends only partially to the case where (Y,ρ) is an arbitrary pathwise connected metric space.To carry such an investigation out, the notions of generalized compact and generalized totally bounded metric space, introduced by the author and A. Barbati in a former paper, turn out to play a crucial rôle. Moreover, we show that the first-mentioned concept provides a precise characterization of those metrizable spaces which attain their extent.  相似文献

Komjáth in 1984 proved that, for each sequence (An) of analytic subsets of a Polish space X, if lim supnHAn is uncountable for every Hω[N] then ?nGAn is uncountable for some Gω[N]. This fact, by our definition, means that the σ-ideal [X]?ω has property (LK). We prove that every σ-ideal generated by X/E has property (LK), for an equivalence relation EX2 of type Fσ with uncountably many equivalence classes. We also show the parametric version of this result. Finally, the invariance of property (LK) with respect to various operations is studied.  相似文献
