The course of composition drift in copolymerization reactions is determined by reactivity ratios of the contributing monomers. Since polymer properties are directly correlated with the resulting chemical composition distribution, reactivity ratios are of paramount importance. Furthermore, obtaining correct reactivity ratios is a prerequisite for good model predictions. For vinyl acetate (VAc), vinyl 2,2-dimethyl-propanoate also known as vinyl pivalate (VPV), and vinyl 2-ethylhexanoate (V2EH), the reactivity ratios with methyl acrylate (MA) have been determined by means of low conversion bulk polymerization. The mol fraction of MA in the resulting copolymer was determined by 1H-NMR. Nonlinear optimization on the thus-obtained monomer feed–copolymer composition data resulted in the following sets of reactivity ratios: rMA = 6.9 ± 1.4 and rVAc = 0.013 ± 0.02; rMA = 5.5 ± 1.2 and rVPV = 0.017 ± 0.035; rMA = 6.9 ± 2.7 and rV2EH = 0.093 ± 0.23. As a result of the similar and overlapping reactivity data of the three methyl acrylate–vinyl ester monomer systems, for practical puposes these data can be described with one set of reactivity data. Nonlinear optimization of all monomer feed–copolymer composition data together resulted in rMA = 6.1 ± 0.6 and rVEst = 0.0087 ± 0.023. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

A novel slurry reactor was used to investigate the copolymerization behavior of ethylene and 1-butene in the presence of 1 wt % Cr on Davison silica (Phillips-type) catalyst over the temperature range of 0–50°C, space velocity of about 0.0051 [m3 (STP)]/(g of catalyst) h, and a fixed ethylene to 1-butene feed mole ratio of 95 : 5. The effect of varying the ethylene to 1-butene feed ratios, 100 : 0, 96.5 : 3.5, 95 : 5, 93 : 7, 90 : 10, 80 : 20, and 0 : 100 mol/mol at 50°C was also studied. The addition of 1-butene to ethylene typically increased both copolymerization rates and yields relative to ethylene homopolymerization with the same catalyst, reaching a maximum yield for an ethylene: 1-butene feed ratio of 95 : 5 at 50°C. The incorporation of 1-butene within the copolymer in all cases was less than 5 mol %. The average activation energy for the apparent reaction rate constant, ka, based on total comonomer mole fraction in the slurry liquid for the ethylene to 1-butene feed mole ratio of 95 : 5 in the temperature range of 50–30°C measured 54.2 kJ/mol. The behavior for temperatures between 30 to 0°C differed with an activation energy of 98.2 kJ/mol; thus, some diffusion limitation likely influences the copolymerization rates at temperatures above 30°C. A kinetics analysis of the experimental data at 50°C for different ethylene to 1-butene feed ratios gave the values of the reactivity ratios, r1 = 27.3 ± 3.6 and r2 ≅ 0, for ethylene and 1-butene, respectively. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The effect of the alkyl group on the relative reactivity of a homologous series of vinyl esters (2) has been studied with ethylene (1) as reference monomer, tert-butyl alcohol as solvent, at 62°C and 35 kg/cm2. The experimental method was based on frequent measurement of the monomer feed composition throughout the copolymerization reaction by means of quantitative gas-chromatographic analysis. Highly accurate monomer reactivity ratios were estimated in a statistically justified manner by a nonlinear least-squares method applied to the integrated copolymer equation. The reactivity of the vinyl ester monomers towards an ethylene radical increased with decreasing electron-with-drawing ability of the ester group. All vinyl ester radicals considered turned out to have the same preference for their own monomer over ethylene (constant r2 = 1.50). Reactivity ratios are discussed in terms of the Qe scheme and the Taft relation. It appeared that chiefly polar factors contribute to the observed relative reactivity, while probably resonance stabilization only plays a minor part. Steric hindrance seems to impair monomer reactivity, only from vinyl pivalate on. Relative reactivities of the vinyl esters are compared with literature values, where other reference monomers have been used.  相似文献

The copolymerization of a highly fluorinated cyclic monomer, octafluorocyclopentene (OFCPE, M1), with ethyl vinyl ether (EVE, M2) was investigated with a radical initiator in bulk. Despite the poor homopolymerizability of each monomer, the copolymerization proceeded successfully, and the molecular weights of the copolymers reached up to more than 10,000. Incorporation of the OFCPE units into the copolymer led to an increase in the glass‐transition point. The copolymer composition was determined from 1H NMR spectra and elemental analysis data. The molar fraction of the OFCPE unit in the copolymer increased and approached but did not exceed 0.5. The monomer reactivity ratios were estimated by the Yamada–Itahashi–Otsu nonlinear least‐squares procedure as r1,OFCPE = ?0.008 ± 0.010 and r2,EVE = 0.192 ± 0.015. The reactivity ratios clearly suggest that the copolymerization proceeds alternatively in the case of an excessive feed of OFCPE. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Free radical solution copolymerization of phenyl methacrylate and N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone was carried out using benzoyl peroxide in 2-butanone solution at 70°C. The composition of the copolymer was determined using 1H-NMR spectra by comparing the intensities of aromatic protons to that of total protons. The results were used to calculaie the copolymerization reactivity ratios by both the Fineman-Ross (F-R) and Kelen-Tüdös (K-T) methods. The reactivity ratios are r 1 = 4.49 ± 1.27 and r 2 = 0.05 ± 0.09 as determined by the K-T method. These values are in good agreement with those determined by the F-R method. The FT-infrared and 13C-NMR spectra of the copolymer are discussed.  相似文献

The copolymerization of N-phenylmaleimide (NPMI) with ethyl phenylacrylate (EPA) in a mixture of dioxane (DIO) and pyridine (Py) was investigated. The apparent monomer reactivity ratio r1 (NPMI) = 0.07 ± 0.01 and r2 (EPA) = 0.09 ± 0.02 in DIO was turned to r1 (NPMI) = 3.67 ± 0.07 and r2 (EPA) = 0 ± 0.03 in Py. The copolymerization of NPMI and EPA with the fixed feed ratio (mol/mol 1 : 1) in different volume ratio of DIO/Py showed that the copolymer composition might be varied in a wide range from the 93.5% of NPMI contents in copolymer to 48.7%. When the volume fraction of Py in the mixture of DIO and Py was <10%, the copolymer with nice alternating structure was obtained and the copolymerization could be inhibited completely by hydroquinone; if the fraction of Py was >10%, the following two kinds of copolymers were formed: a copolymer in which the content of NPMI increased with the Py and the copolymerization also could be inhibited by hydroquinone and a copolymer with low molecular weight almost completely composed of homopolymer of NPMI and is not affected by radical inhibitor as hydroquinone. The transformation of the copolymerization mechanism from the radical to anionic, which was dependent on the volume ratio of DIO and Py, was suggested. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The newly synthesized 1‐TiCl (C3 symmetric) and 2‐TiCl (Cs symmetric) precatalysts in combination with MAO polymerized ethylene, cyclic olefins, and copolymerized ethylene/norbornene in good yields. The catalyst with C3 symmetry exhibits moderate catalytic activity and efficient norbornene incorporation for E/NBE copolymerization in the presence of MAO [activity = 360 kg polymer/(mol Ti h), ethylene 1 atm, NBE 5 mmol/mL, 10 min], affording poly(ethylene‐co‐NBE)s with high norbornene contents (42.0%) and the Cs symmetric catalyst showed an activity of 420 kg polymer/(mol Ti h), ethylene 1 atm, NBE 5 mmol/mL affording poly(ethylene‐co‐NBE)s with 33.0% norbornene content. The effect of monomer concentration at ambient temperature and constant Al/Ti ratio for the homo and copolymerization was studied in a detailed manner. We found that apart from the electronic environment around the metal center the steric environment provided by the symmetry of the catalyst systems has a considerable influence on the percentage of norbornene content of the copolymer obtained. We also found that with a given catalyst a variable clearly influencing the copolymer microstructure, hence also the copolymer properties, is the monomer concentration at a given feed ratio. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Copolymerization of ethylene with styrene, catalyzed by 1,4‐dithiabutanediyl‐linked bis(phenolato) titanium complex and methylaluminoxane, produced exclusively ethylene–styrene copolymers with high activity. Copolymerization parameters were calculated to be rE = 1.2 for ethylene and rS = 0.031 for styrene, with rE rS = 0.037 indicating preference for alternating copolymerization. The copolymer microstructure can be varied by changing the ratio between the monomers in the copolymerization feed, affording copolymers with styrene content up to 68%. The copolymer microstructure was fully elucidated by 13C NMR spectroscopy revealing, in the copolymers with styrene content higher than 50%, the presence of long styrene–styrene homosequences, occasionally interrupted by isolated ethylene units. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract

Living copolymerization of the isobutylene (IB)-p-methylstyrene (pMeSt) monomer pair in combination with the constant copolymer composition (CCC) technique produces high molecular weight ( M n ≈ 100,000 g·mol?1) and narrow molecular weight distribution ( M w/ M n ≈ 1.45) compositionally uniform IB/pMeSt copolymer molecules in the industrially important IB/pMeSt = 97–99/3–1 mol% composition range. Syntheses were carried out with TiCl4 coinitiator in n-butyl chloride homogeneous solution at ?85°C by the use of the Leidenfrost reactor (i.e., by direct cooling of the charge with liquid nitrogen). In order to carry out the CCC technique it was necessary to obtain reliable copolymerization reactivity ratios. These investigations led to rIB = 0.5 ± 0.1 and r pMeSt = 10 ± 4. The attainment of CCC and living copolymerization conditions has been quantitatively demonstrated by dedicated diagnostic plots. Specifically, the attainment of CCC conditions was proven by the analysis of composite rate plots (comonomers input and corresponding copolymer formed versus time) and composition plots (comonomer composition in feed and copolymer formed versus weight of copolymer formed, W p), and living copolymerization was proven by linearly ascending number-average molecular weight of copolymer ( M n) versus W p plots starting at the origin.  相似文献

The alternating copolymerization of styrene and methyl α-chloroacrylate (MCA) with diethylaluminum chloride (Et2AlCl) in benzene at 0°C has been investigated. The copolymer has an equimolar composition irrespective of the feed monomer composition, the copolymer yield and the amount of Et2AlCl used. The copolymerization proceeds first very rapidly and then rather slowly after attaining a certain yield which varies proportionally to the amount of Et2AlCl used. A maximum copolymer yield is observed at about 60% MCA feed composition. The 1H-NMR analyses of dyad, triad, and pentad of the alternating deuterated α-d-St-MCA copolymer indicate that the configuration of this copolymer can be explained by a single parameter, coisotacticity σ(σ = 0.69). A favorable mechanism of the alternating propagation as well as of the stereoregularity control is discussed.  相似文献

Bulk radical copolymerization of methyl acrylate (MeA, M1) with styrene (St, M2) in presence and absence of ZnCl2 as complexing agent was studied. 1H-NMR spectra were used to establish copolymer composition and sequence distribution. The methoxy group signal was observed to be split due to pentads, but the analysis of sequence distribution is possible only at triad level. Both composition and sequence distribution data confirmed that bulk radical copolymerization respects quite well the terminal addition model; the values of r1 = 0.14 ± 0.02 (from composition data) and r1 = 0.25 ± 0.03 (from sequence distribution data) and r2 = 0.83 ± 0.10 (from composition data) were found. The presence of ZnCl2 increases the probability of alternating addition, e.g., for [ZnCl2]/[MeA] = 0.2, r1 = 0.03 ± 0.02 and r2 = 0.17 ± 0.03. The radical copolymer obtained in bulk in the absence of ZnCl2 presents a coisotactic configuration with σ = 0.75 ± 0.03, but the presence of the complexing agent reduces the probability of coisotactic addition, e.g., for [ZnCl2]/[MeA] = 0.2, σ = 0.52 ± 0.03.  相似文献

Free radical solution copolymerization of styrene (St) and itaconic acid (IA) in dimethylsulfoxide‐d6 (DMSO‐d6) as the solvent and the use of 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as the initiator at 78°C was investigated by an on‐line 1H‐NMR spectroscopy technique. Individual monomer conversion vs. reaction time, which was calculated from the 1H‐NMR spectra data, was used to study the drift in monomer mixture composition vs. conversion. It was found that in general, both monomers were incorporated almost equally into the copolymer. However, when the mole fraction of IA was low, the tendency of IA toward incorporation into the copolymer chain was somewhat higher than St and by increasing the mole fraction of IA in the reaction mixture, the inverse tendency was observed. Overall monomer conversion as a function of time was calculated from individual monomer conversion data and used for the estimation of kp /kt 0.5 for various monomer mixture compositions. This ratio was decreased with increasing the amount of IA in the initial feed, indicating a decrease in the rate of copolymerization. Changes in the copolymer composition vs. overall monomer conversion were investigated experimentally from the NMR spectra. This was in good agreement with the changes in monomer mixture composition vs. reaction progress. Plotting the copolymer composition vs. initial monomer feed showed tendency of the system toward alternating copolymerization.  相似文献

Abstract

Free radical copolymerization of styrene (St) and N(4-bro-mophenyl)maleimide (4BPMI) in dioxane solution gave an alternating copolymer in all proportions of feed comonomer compositions. The monomer reactivity ratios were found to be r 1, = 0.0218 ± 0.0064 (St) and r 2, = 0.0232 ± 0.0112 (4BPMI), and the activation energy of the copolymerization reaction for the equimolar ratios of comonomer was E a, = 51.1 kJ/mol. The molecular weights of the copolymers obtained are relatively high, the T g's showed similar values (490 K), and the thermal stability is higher than that of polystyrene. The initial rate of copolymerization depends on the total concentration of the comonomers and the maximum occurred at higher 4BPMI mol fractions; however, the overall conversion is highest at equimolar comonomer composition. It has been shown that a charge-transfer complex participates in the process of copolymerization. The initial reaction rate was measured as a function of the monomer molar ratios, and the participation of the charge-transfer complex monomer and the free monomers was quantitatively estimated.  相似文献

(Vinyl acetate)/(ethyl acrylate) (V/E) and (vinyl acetate)/(butyl acrylate) (V/B) copolymers were prepared by free radical solution polymerization. 1H-NMR spectra of copolymers were used for calculation of copolymer composition. The copolymer composition data were used for determining reactivity ratios for the copolymerization of vinyl acetate with ethyl acrylate and butyl acrylate by Kelen-Tudos (KT) and nonlinear Error in Variables methods (EVM). The reactivity ratios obtained are rv = 0.03 ± 0.03, rE = 4.68 ± 1.70 (KT method); rv = 0.03 ± 0.01, rE = 4.60 ± 0.65 (EV method) for (V/E) copolymers and rv ? 0.03 ± 0.01, rB ? 6.67 ± 2.17 (KT method); rv = 0.03 ± 0.01, rB = 7.43 ± 0.71 (EV method) for (V/B) copolymers. Microstructure was obtained in terms of the distribution of V- and E-centered triads and V- and B-centered triads for (V/E) and (V/B) copolymers respectively. Homonuclear 1H 2D-COSY NMR spectra were also recorded to ascertain the existence of coupling between protons in (V/E) as well as (V/B) copolymers. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Styrene was copolymerized with ethylene using the geometry constrained Me2Si(Me4Cp)(N‐tert‐butyl)TiCl2 Dow catalyst activated with methylaluminoxane. Increasing the styrene/ethylene ratio in the reactor feed had the effects of reducing both the activity of the catalyst and the molecular weight of the copolymers produced. However, the higher the styrene/ethylene ratio used, the greater the amount of styrene that became incorporated in the copolymer. We discuss these experimental findings within the framework of a computational analysis of ethylene/styrene copolymerization performed through hybrid density functional theory (B3LYP). In general, there was good agreement between the experimental and theoretical results. Our findings point to the suitability of combining experimental and theoretical data for clarifying the copolymerization mechanisms that take place in α‐olefin‐organometallic systems. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Ethylene/styrene copolymerizations using Cp′TiCl2(O‐2,6‐iPr2C6H3) [Cp′ = Cp* (C5Me5, 1 ), 1,2,4‐Me3C5H2 ( 2 ), tert‐BuC5H4 ( 3 )]‐MAO catalyst systems were explored under various conditions. Complexes 2 and 3 exhibited both high catalytic activities (activity: 504–6810 kg‐polymer/mol‐Ti h) and efficient styrene incorporations at 25, 40°C (ethylene 6 atm), affording relatively high molecular weight poly (ethylene‐co‐styrene)s with unimodal molecular weight distributions as well as with uniform styrene distributions (Mw = 6.12–13.6 × 104, Mw/Mn = 1.50–1.71, styrene 31.7–51.9 mol %). By‐productions of syndiotactic polystyrene (SPS) were observed, when the copolymerizations by 1 – 3 ‐MAO catalyst systems were performed at 55, 70 °C (ethylene 6 atm, SPS 9.0–68.9 wt %); the ratios of the copolymer/SPS were affected by the polymerization temperature, the [styrene]/[ethylene] feed molar ratios in the reaction mixture, and by both the cyclopentadienyl fragment (Cp′) and anionic ancillary donor ligand (L) in Cp′TiCl2(L) (L = Cl, O‐2,6‐iPr2C6H3 or N=CtBu2) employed. Co‐presence of the catalytically‐active species for both the copolymerization and the homopolymerization was thus suggested even in the presence of ethylene; the ratios were influenced by various factors (catalyst precursors, temperature, styrene/ethylene feed molar ratio, etc.). © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Copolymerization of the cyclic ketene acetal 5,6‐benzo‐2‐methylene‐1,3‐dioxepane (BMDO) with methyl methacrylate (MMA) is studied with respect to its copolymerization parameters and the suitability to control BMDO/MMA copolymerizations via the reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) technique to obtain linear and 4‐arm star polymers. BMDO shows disparate copolymerization behavior with MMA and r1 = 0.33 ± 0.06 and r2 = 6.0 ± 0.8 have been determined for polymerization at 110 °C in anisole from fitting copolymer composition vs. comonomer feed data to the Lewis–Mayo equation. Copolymerization of the two monomers is successful in RAFT polymerization employing a trithiocarbonate control agent. As desired, polymers contain only little amount of polyester units stemming from BMDO units and preliminary degradation experiment show that the polymer degrades slowly, but steadily in aqueous 1 M NaOH dispersion. Within ten days, the polymers are broken down to low molecular weight segments from an initial molecular weight of Mn = 6000 g mol?1. Star (co)polymerization with an erythritol‐based tetra‐functional RAFT agent following the Z‐group approach proceeds efficiently and polymers with a number‐average molecular weight of 10,000 g mol?1 are readily obtained that degrade in similar manner as the linear copolymer counterparts. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The controlled nitroxide‐mediated homopolymerization of 9‐(4‐vinylbenzyl)‐9H‐carbazole (VBK) and the copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) with varying amounts of VBK were accomplished by using 10 mol % {tert‐butyl[1‐(diethoxyphosphoryl)‐2,2‐dimethylpropyl]amino} nitroxide relative to 2‐({tert‐butyl[1‐(diethoxyphosphoryl)‐2,2‐dimethylpropyl]amino}oxy)‐2‐methylpropionic acid (BlocBuilder?) in dimethylformamide at temperatures from 80 to 125 °C. As little as 1 mol % of VBK in the feed was required to obtain a controlled copolymerization of an MMA/VBK mixture, resulting in a linear increase in molecular weight versus conversion with a narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw /Mn ≈ 1.3). Preferential incorporation of VBK into the copolymer was indicated by the MMA/VBK reactivity ratios determined: rVBK = 2.7 ± 1.5 and rMMA = 0.24 ± 0.14. The copolymers were found significantly “living” by performing subsequent chain extensions with a fresh batch of VBK and by 31P NMR spectroscopy analysis. VBK was found to be an effective controlling comonomer for NMP of MMA, and such low levels of VBK comonomer ensured transparency in the final copolymer. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Ring opening copolymerization of succinic anhydride (SA) with ethylene oxide (EO)was successfully carried out by using a series of aluminum-based catalyst in 1,4-dioxane at62±2℃. The results showed that in-situ AlR_3-H_2O (R=ethyl, iso-butyl) catalysts gavehigher molecular weight (M_w~10~4), while Al(OR)_3 catalysts gave the higher alternatingcopolymer structure with slightly lower molecular weight. The in-situ AlR_3-H_2O systemshave been evaluated in more detail for the reaction which showed the optimum H_2O/Almolar ratio to be 0.5. The copolymers with different composition (F_(SA)/F_(EO)= 36/64to 45/55 mol/mol) were synthesized by using different monomer feed ratio. The melt-ing point (T_m), glass transition temperature (T_g) and enthalpy of fusion (ΔH_f) of thesecopolymers are depended on the copolymer composition and in the range of 87~102℃,-12~-18℃, and 37~66J/g, respectively. The second heating scan of DSC also in-dicated that the higher alternating copolymer was more easily recrystallized. The onsetdecomposition temperature was more than 300℃ under nitrogen and influenced by thecopolymer composition.  相似文献
