Employing the surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), a kind of coupled metallic squareness ring waveguide structure is presented. Its properties has been analyzed with the finite different time domain method and the coupling length has been derived from the coupled mode theory. It is demonstrated that the SPPs excited by the light with different wavelength will come out from different output port due to different coupling length. By appropriately designing the structure, it can be utilized to realize some optics devices such as multiple-wavelength sorter and beam splitter. This will break through the diffraction limit of traditional optical devices.  相似文献

A novel adiabatic mode multiplexer enables a 2 x 2 optical switch whose operation does not depend on accumulated phase due to evanescent coupling between waveguides. The adiabatic mode multiplexer has a negligible insertion loss over C+L bands and modal cross talk better than -40 dB for any polarization state. Mode multiplexing is achieved by adiabatic transition from the fundamental mode of the single-mode waveguide to the higher mode of the multimode waveguide. Experimental measurement results for a device realized in silica-on-silicon technology are presented. By directly measuring the nonadiabatic transition probability, we show that the adiabatic mode multiplexer operates in the Landau-Zener regime.  相似文献

利用光学谐振器结构的色散可提高旋转传感的灵敏度, 耦合谐振器光波导可实现强色散, 本文利用传输矩阵理论, 研究耦合谐振器光波导旋转传感的相位灵敏度, 讨论谐振器布局和波导参数对相位灵敏度的影响, 结果表明波导的相位曲线和相位灵敏度依赖于波导中谐振器的布局, 谐振器数量和耦合系数不仅会影响波导旋转传感相位灵敏度曲线峰值的数量和带宽, 还会影响相位灵敏度的大小, 而损耗会降低波导的相位灵敏度, 本文的结果可用于利用谐振器布局和波导参数设计耦合谐振器光波导的相位灵敏度, 对其在旋转传感方面的应用有重要意义. 关键词: 谐振器 旋转传感 光波导  相似文献

We study adiabatic transformation in optical waveguides with discrete translational symmetry. We calculate the reflection and transmission coefficient for a structure consisting of a slab waveguide that is adiabatically transformed into a photonic crystal waveguide and then back into a slab waveguide. The calculation yields high transmission over a wide frequency range of the photonic crystal waveguide band and indicates efficient coupling between the slab waveguide and the photonic crystal waveguide. Other applications of adiabatic mode transformation in photonic crystal waveguides and the coupled-resonator optical waveguides are also discussed.  相似文献

Two mode-evolution-based low-loss compact-size integrated polarization rotators and transformers are presented. They are designed to fulfill the tasks of rotating mode polarizations between Gaussian-like strip waveguide modes and non-Gaussian-like slotted waveguide modes, as well as the mode transforming between horizontal and vertical slotted waveguides. Consisting of several adiabatic tapers, the presented devices can achieve complete polarization rotations and transformations between different classes of waveguide modes with a device length of tens of micrometers and with a negligible insertion loss.  相似文献

In this article, we propose a quantum regime for Cherenkov free-electron laser (CFEL) and surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) excited in dielectric and multilayer graphene waveguides, respectively. This quantum regime is realized when the momentum spread induced in the interaction is smaller than the photon recoil. The discrete momentum exchange characterizing this interaction yields a significantly narrow single emission line. To determine the condition of the quantum regime, we derive an expression for the gain in the Cherenkov effect using a quantum mechanical treatment. It is assumed that the effective spread in momentum is due to the finite interaction length L (or the propagation length in the case of SPPs). For both cases, CFEL and SPPs, the effects of electron beam and waveguide parameters on the possibility of the quantum regime are studied. We conclude that the quantum regime can be basically verified at low electron beam energy (<40 keV) and at emission wavelengths in the near infrared range (<5 μm) when L is in the order of millimeters. In the case of SPPs, we also show that the feasibility to realize quantum SPPs is enhanced by increasing the chemical potential and number of graphene layers.  相似文献

金属纳米线波导可以将光局域在亚波长尺度内传播, 在纳米光子集成回路方面有着重要的作用. 本文应用有限元方法, 研究了十字结构银纳米线的表面等离极化激元分束特性. 结果表明, 不同模式的表面等离极化激元在十字结构三个分支的输出依赖于端面的几何结构参数. 此外, 研究还发现由于不同模式表面等离极化激元叠加, 在十字结构的分支上出现了周期性电场分布.  相似文献

We present a perfect graphene absorber with a compound waveguide grating at the near-infrared. The analytical approach is mainly based on the coupled leaky mode theory, which turns the design of the absorber to finding out the required leaky modes supported by the grating structure. Perfect absorption occurs only when the radiative loss of the leaky mode matches the intrinsic absorption loss, which is also named the critical coupling condition.Furthermore, we also demonstrate that the critical coupling of the system can be robustly controlled, and the perfect absorption wavelength can be easily tuned by adjusting the parameters of the compound waveguide grating.  相似文献

We have demonstrated a hybrid Mach-Zehnder optical modulator consisting of a large-core, low-loss fluorinated passive polymer waveguide and an electro-optic (EO) polymer waveguide. The combination exhibits low fiber coupling loss to the passive waveguide and reduced transmission loss because the EO polymer waveguide is used only in the active region. The two waveguides are connected by vertical tapers that permit low-loss adiabatic coupling between the two modes. The half-wave voltage and the insertion loss of the fabricated modulator are 3.6 V and 6 dB, respectively, at a wavelength of 1.55 microm . The estimated coupling loss with the standard single-mode fiber is ~0.5 dB.  相似文献

Characteristic Analysis of Bending Coupling Between Two Optical Waveguides   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
By means of the coupled mode theory and transfer matrix technique, a method is presented for analyzing the bending coupling between straight and bent rectangular waveguides, or between two bent rectangular waveguides. Calculations show that an effective coupling region exists around the central coupling point, in which the bending coupling appears, beyond which the bending coupling is very weak, and the propagation power in each waveguide becomes constant. When the bending radius becomes larger or the central coupling gap becomes smaller, this effective coupling region becomes wider, in which the coupling behavior becomes stronger.  相似文献

A polymeric wide-band electro-optic (EO) modulator array based on unidirectional mode-coupling between the guiding multi-mode waveguide array and a vertical configured planar dumping waveguide was developed. A low insertion loss of <1.7 dB was obtained due to asymmetrically designed guiding waveguide and the dumping waveguide. A modulation depth of 91% was achieved with the device length of 3.5 cm at a low driving voltage of 3.2 V. The employment of the dumping planar waveguide not only provides an efficient way to achieve the unidirectional coupling mechanism, but also effectively confines the light coupled from the guiding waveguides within the planar dumping waveguide. The combination of unidirectional coupling and light confinement effects ensures low cross talk of <22 dB between adjacent guiding waveguides. Since the proposed modulator is based on the unidirectional coupling mechanism, it is intrinsically wide-band. A wide-band operation from 1308 to 1324 nm was experimentally obtained. The unidirectional mode-coupling-based wide-band modulation principle can be readily applied to other wavelengths, such as 1330 and 1550 nm ranges.  相似文献

Asymmetric directional coupling between a hybrid plasmonic waveguide with subwavelength field confinement and a conventional dielectric waveguide is investigated. The proposed hybrid coupler features short coupling length, high coupling efficiency, high extinction ratio, and low insertion loss; it can also be integrated into a silicon-based platform. This coupler can be potentially adopted for signal routing between plasmonic waveguides and dielectric waveguides in photonic integrated circuits. 金属纳米结构的表面等离激元可以突破光学衍射极限,为光子器件的微型化和集成光学芯片的实现奠定基础.基于表面等离激元的各种基本光学元件已经研制出来.然而,由于金属结构的固有欧姆损耗以及向衬底的辐射损耗等,表面等离激元的传输能量损耗较大,极大地制约了其在纳米光子器件和回路中的应用.研究能量损耗的影响因素以及如何有效降低能量损耗对未来光子器件的实际应用具有重要意义.本文从纳米线表面等离激元的基本模式出发,介绍了它在不同条件下的场分布和传输特性,在此基础上着重讨论纳米线表面等离激元传输损耗的影响因素和测量方法以及目前常用的降低传输损耗的思路.最后给出总结以及如何进一步降低能量损耗方法的展望.表面等离激元能量损耗的相关研究对于纳米光子器件的设计和集成光子回路的构建有着重要作用.  相似文献

To investigate light coupling between a long range surface plasmon polariton (LRSPP) waveguide and a conventional integrated optical component, a hybrid vertical directional coupler consisting of a LRSPP waveguides and a dielectric waveguide is investigated and fabricated. In the proposed coupler the dielectric waveguide and LRSPP waveguide are vertically configured for dense integration and strong coupling. The characteristics of the even and odd super-modes of the coupler are also analyzed to design the device. The fabricated device exhibits damped sinusoidal behavior along the coupling length due to propagation loss of the LRSPP waveguide. The maximum power transfer of 86% from the LRSPP waveguide to the dielectric waveguide is achieved at the coupling length of 600 μm. The measured characteristics of the device are in relatively good agreement with a theoretical analysis.  相似文献

The film mode matching method was used to analyze the inter waveguide coupling losses in a passive asymmetric twin waveguide caused by waveguide width and refractive index variation for both resonant and adiabatic coupling at a wavelength of 1,550 nm. The reasons for power losses are shown. It is demonstrated that tapering the mode beating section of the resonant coupler can increase the fabrication tolerance of resonant coupling without increasing the coupling length.  相似文献

Properties of the solutions of the coupled equations describing the flow of average mode power in optical waveguides are investigated. All of the important properties and their theoretical foundations are first reviewed for systems with arbitrary coupling and loss coefficients. It is then shown that, for the special class of systems with nearest-neighbour coupling, the solutions are expressible in terms of orthogonal polynomials. In particular, for systems obeying a quasi-uniform loss model and having coupling coefficients with simple dependence on mode number (uniform or linear), the solutions are associated with the classical polynomials. As illustrations of this analysis, the characteristics of optical power flow in three such systems are studied in detail. These include a slab-waveguide with uniform coupling, the corresponding cylindrical waveguide with uniform coupling, and a parabolic-index fibre with linear coupling dependence.  相似文献

Resonance cavity is a basic element in optics,which has wide applications in optical devices.Coupled cavities(CCs)designed in metal-insulator-metal(MIM)bus waveguide are investigated through the finite difference time domain method and coupled-mode theory.In the CCs,the resonant modes of the surface plasmon polaritons(SPPs)split with the thickness decreasing of the middle baffle.Through the coupled-mode theory analysis,it is found that the phase differences introduced in opposite and positive couplings between two cavities lead to mode splitting.The resonant wavelength of positive coupling mode can be tuned in a large range(about 644 nm)through adjusting the coupling strength,which is quite different from the classical adjustment of the optical path in a single cavity.Based on the resonances of the CCs in the MIM waveguide,more compact devices can be designed to manipulate SPPs propagation.A device is designed to realize flexible multiple-wavelength SPPs routing.The coupling in CC structures can be applied to the design of easy-integrated laser cavities,filters,multiple-wavelength management devices in SPPs circuits,nanosensors,etc.  相似文献

本文提出了一种基于U形波导耦合单微环结构的新型SOI(绝缘体上硅)温度传感器.温度变化引起感温部位有效折射率和长度变化,导致传感器的输出光谱发生漂移.根据传输矩阵法和耦合模理论,设计了新型传感器模型,并且分析了感温部位不同时系统输出光谱特性.结果表明:当U形波导耦合单微环整体结构感温时,输出光谱无伪模,消光比达到31 dB,可作为最佳感温元件.相比于传统的双直波导耦合单微环结构,当U形波导的两个耦合点间的距离为微环周长的整数倍数时,FSR(自由光谱范围)可加倍至56 nm,灵敏度提高到89.2 pm/?C,测量范围为298—720 K,实现了SOI微环谐振器的高温测量.  相似文献

The propagation length of surface plasmon polaritons(SPPs) is intrinsically limited by the metallic ohmic loss that is enhanced by the strongly confined electromagnetic field. In this paper, we propose a new class of hybrid plasmonic waveguides(HPWs) that can support long-range SPP propagation while keeping subwavelength optical field confinement. It is shown that the coupling between the waveguides can be well tuned by simply varying the structural parameters. Compared with conventional HPWs, a larger propagation length as well as a better optical field confinement can be simultaneously realized. The proposed structure with better optical performance can be useful for future photonic device design and optical integration research.  相似文献
