At higher B(0) fields, specific absorption rate (SAR) deposition increases. Due to maximum SAR limitation, slice coverage decreases and/or scan time increases. Conventional selective RF pulses are played out in conjunction with a time independent field gradient. Variable rate selective excitation (VERSE) is a technique that modifies the original RF and gradient waveforms such that slice profile is unchanged. The drawback is that the slice profile for off-resonance spins is distorted. A new VERSE algorithm based on modeling the scaled waveforms as a Fermi function is introduced. It ensures that system related constraints of maximum gradient amplitude and slew rate are not exceeded. The algorithm can be used to preserve the original RF pulse duration while minimizing SAR and peak b1 or to minimize the RF pulse duration. The design is general and can be applied to any symmetrical or asymmetrical RF waveform. The algorithm is demonstrated by using it to (a) minimize the SAR of a linear phase RF pulse, (b) minimize SAR of a hyperbolic secant RF pulse, and (c) minimize the duration of a linear phase RF pulse. Images with a T1-FLAIR (T1 FLuid Attenuated Inversion Recovery) sequence using a conventional and VERSE adiabatic inversion RF pulse are presented. Comparison of images and scan parameters for different anatomies and coils shows increased scan coverage and decreased SAR with the VERSE inversion RF pulse, while image quality is preserved.

A number of materials MR developments require that measurements be made in a large magnetic field gradient, including unilateral (single-sided) magnet designs for portability and open access. In such cases, all radiofrequency (RF) pulses are slice selective. Typically, little effort is made to tailor the shape of the selected slice, because shaped RF excitations are viewed as too lengthy in duration to be useful in materials MRI, where signal lifetimes are mostly less than 1 ms. We compare measured magnetization responses to various standard shaped pulses under extreme conditions of application (30 μs duration, offset frequencies up to 0.3 MHz, and in the presence of a 13 T/m permanent magnetic field gradient). We discuss the feasibility of their implementation for materials MRI in a large gradient, including the difficulty of choosing optimized pulse area, and propose viable solutions.

The purpose of this study was to investigate how flow affects slice-selective excitation, particularly for radiofrequency (rf) pulses optimized for slice-selective excitation of stationary material. Simulation methods were used to calculate the slice profiles for material flowing at different velocities, using optimal flow compensation when appropriate. Four rf pulses of very different shapes were used in the simulation study: a 90° linear-phase Shinnar-LeRoux pulse; a 90° self-refocusing pulse; a minimum-phase Shinnar-LeRoux inversion pulse; and a SPINCALC inversion pulse. Slice profiles from simulations with a laminar flow model were compared with experimental studies for two different rf pulses using a clinical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system. We found that, for a given rf pulse, the effect of flow on slice-selective excitation depends on the product of the selection gradient amplitude, the component of velocity in the slice selection direction, and the square of the rf pulse duration. The shapes of the slice profiles from the Shinnar-LeRoux pulses were relatively insensitive to velocity. However, the slice profiles from the self-refocusing pulse and the SPINCALC pulse were significantly degraded by velocity. Experimental slice profiles showed excellent agreement with simulation. In conclusion, our study demonstrates that slice-selective excitation can be significantly degraded by flow depending on the velocity, the gradient amplitude, and characteristics of the rf excitation pulse used. The results can aid in the design of rf pulses for slice-selective excitation of flowing material.

Spatially selective excitation pulses have been designed to produce uniform flip angles in the presence of the RF and static field inhomogeneities typically encountered in MRI studies of the human brain at 7 T. Pulse designs are based upon non-selective, composite pulses numerically optimized for the desired performance over prescribed ranges of field inhomogeneities. The non-selective pulses are subsequently transformed into spatially selective pulses with the same field-insensitive properties through modification of the spectral composition of the individual sub-pulses which are then executed in conjunction with an oscillating gradient waveform. An in-depth analysis of the performance of these RF pulses is presented in terms of total pulse durations, slice profiles, linearity of in-slice magnetization phase, sensitivity to RF and static field variations, and signal loss due to T(2) effects. Both simulations and measurements in phantoms and in the human brain are used to evaluate pulses with nominal flip angles of 45° and 90°. Target slice thickness in all cases is 2mm. Results indicate that the described class of field-insensitive RF pulses is capable of improving flip-angle uniformity in 7 T human brain imaging. There appears to be a subset of pulses with durations ?10 ms for which non-linearities in the magnetization phase are minimal and signal loss due to T(2) decay is not prohibitive. Such pulses represent practical solutions for achieving uniform flip angles in the presence of the large field inhomogeneities common to high-field human imaging and help to better establish the performance limits of high-field imaging systems with single-channel transmission.

Hyperpolarized 13C offers high signal-to-noise ratios for imaging metabolic activity in vivo, but care must be taken when designing pulse sequences because the magnetization cannot be recovered once it has decayed. It has a short lifetime, on the order of minutes, and gets used up by each RF excitation. In this paper, we present a new dynamic chemical-shift imaging method that uses specialized RF pulses designed to maintain most of the hyperpolarized substrate while providing adequate SNR for the metabolic products. These are multiband, variable flip angle, spectral-spatial RF pulses that use spectral selectivity to minimally excite the injected prepolarized 13C-pyruvate substrate. The metabolic products of lactate and alanine are excited with a larger flip angle to increase SNR. This excitation was followed by an RF amplitude insensitive double spin-echo and an echo-planar flyback spectral-spatial readout gradient. In vivo results in rats and mice are presented showing improvements over constant flip angle RF pulses. The metabolic products are observable for a longer window because the low pyruvate flip angle preserves magnetization, allowing for improved observation of spatially varying metabolic reactions.

Almost all NMR imaging and localized spectroscopic methods fundamentally rely on the use of magnetic field gradients. It follows that precise information on gradient waveform shape and rise-times is often most useful in experimental MRI. We present a very simple and robust method for measuring the time evolution of a magnetic field gradient. The method is based on the analysis of the NMR signal in the time domain, and requires no specialized field measurement probes for its implementation. The technique makes use of the principal that for small flip angles the excitation profile is a good approximation to the Fourier transform of the radio frequency pulse shape. Creation of the NMR signal can be considered as an inverse Fourier transform and thus variation of the gradient strength during the excitation pulse influences the shape of the NMR signal. Although originally designed for measurement of the rise time only, we have now extended the technique to measure the exact time course of the gradient. The theory is confirmed by experimental results for gradient waveform field measurements in a high-field vertical bore system.

The FLASH technique for fast magnetic resonance (MR) imaging often employs strong magnetic field gradients, called spoiler gradients, to dephase the transverse magnetization after it has been measured. Otherwise, image artifacts can develop. The effectiveness of spoiler gradients at suppressing these artifacts was evaluated experimentally on two-dimensional MR images of a uniform phantom and patients. It was informative to compare the magnetization immediately before the RF excitation in each phase encoding step. Only spoiler gradients in the slice selection direction were effective. Spoiler gradients that decreased steadily from a large amplitude in the first phase encoding step to zero in the last minimized the transverse magnetization and suppressed the image artifact, without changing the image contrast.

Single quantum heteronuclear cross-polarization in solids is strongly sensitive to resonance offsets. In the presence of main field- or radio-frequency field gradients, the cross-polarization efficiency, therefore, shows a strong spatial dependence, which represents a new principle for localized NMR in solids. Since slices-selective excitation is achieved simultaneously to cross-polarization, the suggested pulse sequences avoid the use of shaped pulses, the application of which is problematic with solid. The dependence of the localization efficiency on experimental and sample parameters is analyzed theoretically for a spin-1/2 system in the presence of a static or a radio-frequency magnetic field gradient. The resulting slice profiles and the calculated dependence of the slice thickness on the parameters of the basic cross-polarization procedures are discussed and confirmed experimentally on the example of1H-3C spin systems.

At high magnetic field, B(1)(+) non-uniformity causes undesired inhomogeneity in SNR and image contrast. Parallel RF transmission using tailored 3D k-space trajectory design has been shown to correct for this problem and produce highly uniform in-plane magnetization with good slice selection profile within a relatively short excitation duration. However, at large flip angles the excitation k-space based design method fails. Consequently, several large-flip-angle parallel transmission designs have recently been suggested. In this work, we propose and demonstrate a large-flip-angle parallel excitation design for 90 degrees and 180 degrees spin-echo slice-selective excitations that mitigate severe B(1)(+) inhomogeneity. The method was validated on an 8-channel transmit array at 7T using a water phantom with B(1)(+) inhomogeneity similar to that seen in human brain in vivo. Slice-selective excitations with parallel RF systems offer means to implement conventional high-flip excitation sequences without a severe pulse-duration penalty, even at very high B(0) field strengths where large B(1)(+) inhomogeneity is present.

This work explores slice profile effects in 2D slice-selective gradient-echo MRI of hyperpolarized nuclei. Two different sequences were investigated: a Spoiled Gradient Echo sequence with variable flip angle (SPGR-VFA) and a balanced Steady-State Free Precession (SSFP) sequence. It is shown that in SPGR-VFA the distribution of flip angles across the slice present in any realistically shaped radiofrequency (RF) pulse leads to large excess signal from the slice edges in later RF views, which results in an undesired non-constant total transverse magnetization, potentially exceeding the initial value by almost 300% for the last RF pulse. A method to reduce this unwanted effect is demonstrated, based on dynamic scaling of the slice selection gradient. SSFP sequences with small to moderate flip angles (<40°) are also shown to preserve the slice profile better than the most commonly used SPGR sequence with constant flip angle (SPGR-CFA). For higher flip angles, the slice profile in SSFP evolves in a manner similar to SPGR-CFA, with depletion of polarization in the center of the slice.

Susceptibility artifacts due to metallic prostheses are a major problem in clinical magnetic resonance imaging. We theoretically and experimentally analyze slice distortion arising from susceptibility differences in a phantom consisting of a stainless steel ball bearing embedded in agarose gel. To relate the observed image artifacts to slice distortion, we simulate images produced by 2D and 3D spin-echo (SE) and a view angle tilting (VAT) sequence. Two-dimensional SE sequences suffer from extreme slice distortion when a metal prosthesis is present, unlike 3D SE sequences for which--since slices are phase-encoded--distortion of the slice profile is minimized, provided the selected slab is larger than the region of interest. In a VAT sequence, artifacts are reduced by the application of a gradient along the slice direction during readout. However, VAT does not correct for the excitation slice profile, which results in the excitation of spins outside the desired slice location and can lead to incorrect anatomical information in MR images. We propose that the best sequences for imaging in the presence of a metal prosthesis utilize 3D acquisition, with phase encoding replacing slice selection to minimize slice distortion, combined with excitation and readout gradient strengths at their maximum values.

Sensitivity-encoded phase undersampling has been combined with simultaneous slice excitation to produce a parallel MRI method with a high volumetric acquisition acceleration factor without the need for auxiliary stepped field coils. Dual-slice excitation was produced by modulating both spin and gradient echo sequences at +/-6 kHz. Frequency aliasing of simultaneously excited slices was prevented by using an additional gradient applied along the slice axis during data acquisition. Data were acquired using a four-channel receiver array and x4 sensitivity encoding on a 1.5 T MR system. The simultaneous parallel inclined readout image technique has been successfully demonstrated in both phantoms and volunteers. A multiplicative image acquisition acceleration factor of up to x8 was achieved. Image SNR and resolution was dependent on the ratio of the readout gradient to the additional slice gradient. A ratio of approximately 2:1 produced acceptable image quality. Use of RF pulses with additional excitation bands should enable the technique to be extended to volumetric acquisition acceleration factors in the range of x16-24 without the SNR limitations of pure partially parallel phase reduction methods.

We introduce a simple, efficient, low-SAR method for magnetic resonance imaging in the presence of a static field with a permanent, and possibly large gradient. The technique, which is called slant-slice imaging is essentially a spin-echo imaging sequence except that the imaging slice is oriented such that the static field gradient can be used in conjunction with applied gradients during readout. Data are collected for 2D slices. Unlike single point imaging techniques, entire lines of k-space are acquired with each readout. The slant-slice pulse sequence is used to obtain high quality images, using a clinical scanner to simulate a static field with a large permanent gradient. The effects of the inhomogeneity are quantified by two parameters nu and q, which are useful for assessing the utility of a magnet design for 3D-MR imaging.

A new PGSE NMR experiment, designed to measure molecular diffusion coefficients in systems with nonvanishing static dipolar coupling, is described. The fast static dipolar dephasing of the single-quantum (13)C coherences is removed by multiple-pulse heteronuclear decoupling. The resulting slow dephasing of the (13)C coherences allows for inserting appropriate gradient pulses into the pulse sequence. The presence of the large magnetic field gradient reduces the efficiency of the decoupling sequences which is compensated for by introducing a scheme of sequential slice selection across the sample. The method is demonstrated by (19)F-decoupled (13)C PGSE NMR experiments in a lyotropic nematic and lamellar liquid crystal.

Ultrashort TE (UTE) sequences allow direct visualization of tissues with very short T2 relaxation times, such as tendons, ligaments, menisci, and cortical bone. In this work, theoretical calculations, simulations, and phantom studies, as well as in vivo imaging were performed to maximize signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for slice selective RF excitation for 2D UTE sequences. The theoretical calculations and simulations were based on the Bloch equations, which lead to analytic expressions for the optimal RF pulse duration and amplitude to maximize magnetic resonance signal in the presence of rapid transverse relaxation. In steady state, it was found that the maximum signal amplitude was not obtained at the classical Ernst angle, but at an either lower or higher flip angle, depending on whether the RF pulse duration or amplitude was varied, respectively.

In this work, two distinct approaches to the tailoring of selective radiofrequency (RF) pulses were applied to a cos-sinc pulse of the DIGGER sequence used in localized spectroscopy. Ideally, three such pulses combined with a gradient in each direction destroy the Mz component of the magnetization everywhere but in the volume of interest. In the first approach, the optimal RF amplitude modulation is found by minimizing the difference between the ideal and the computed Mz profiles. In the second strategy, the RF pulse envelope is adjusted by optimization of the tip angle profile. Computed slice profiles optimized by each of these methods have been compared to experimental results. Simulations as well as experiments show that the second approach, which optimizes tip angles, is the most efficient.

Double-quantum heteronuclear coherence transfer in solids shows a strong spatial dependence when performed in the presence of a magnetic field gradient. This is a direct consequence of the off-resonance sensitivity of the coherence transfer process and represents a new principle for localized NMR spectroscopy of quadrupole nuclei in solids. Since the slice-selective excitation is achieved simultaneously to the cross-polarization, the suggested pulse sequences avoid the use of shaped pulses, the application of which is problematic in solids. In the present work, the localization efficiency of this new slice-selection principle was analyzed in dependence on the experimental parameters for a spin system consisting of abundant spin-1/2 and rare spin-1 nuclei. The resulting slice profiles and the calculated dependences of the slice thickness for the basic coherence transfer procedures are discussed on the example of1H?2H in monodeuterated benzene. The proposed method opens the possibility of volume-selective investigations of the structure and dynamics of materials using the well-established methodology of deuteron-NMR spectroscopy.
