The Chemistry of Hainanensine Derivatives

Hainanensine(1) and its analog 6 were obtained through intramolecular regiospecific cycliza-tion. Reduction of 6 under different conditions gave 7～12. The stereochemistry was established bychemical correlation, spectral analysis and X-ray diffraction.     

The Fascinating Chemistry of α-Haloamides

The aim of this review is to highlight the rich chemistry of α-haloamides originally mainly used to discover new C−N, C−O and C−S bond forming reactions, and later widely employed in C−C cross-coupling reactions with C(sp³), C(sp²) and C(sp) coupling partners. Radical-mediated transformations of α-haloamides bearing a suitable located unsaturated bond has proven to be a straightforward alternative to access diverse cyclic compounds by means of either radical initiators, transition metal redox catalysis or visible light photoredox catalysis. On the other hand, cycloadditions with α-halohydroxamate-based azaoxyallyl cations have garnered significant attention. Moreover, in view of the important role in life and materials science of difluoroalkylated compounds, a wide range of catalysts has been developed for the efficient incorporation of difluoroacetamido moieties into activated as well as unactivated substrates.

The Invention of Theoretische Chemie : Forms and Uses of German Chemistry Textbooks, 1775–1820

Abstract

The most significant outcome of an analysis of the German chemistry textbooks published between 1775 and 1820 was the emergence of the concept of theoretische Chemie. Rather than providing fundamental explanations for substances, affinities or reactions, theoretische Chemie ordered the available chemical facts. For the large group of university-based chemists who lacked technical facilities for experimental research, building these kinds of ordered systems proved an adequate way of contributing to chemistry. Furthermore, theoretische Chemie was important for the self-image of chemistry as a science by offering a framework for integrating new knowledge from various nonscientific fields of practice. In spite of this function, textbook authors discussed their very different ordered systems merely in terms of didactic appropriateness rather than in terms of scientific justification or correspondence with nature.     

The 14th Australian Symposium on Analytical Chemistry. Adelaide, 5–9 July 1997

 The Analytical Division of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI) held its 14th biennial symposium on analytical chemistry (14AC) in Adelaide, South Australia on 5–9 July 1997 [1]. The theme, "A broader view of the world" was an explicit invitation from the organisers to analysts to "take time away from their laboratories and consider how their work affects the world . . . A major challenge to chemists is to redefine their role in industry, education and the community and face, head-on, the demands brought about by free trade, economic rationalism and the environment." Part of this challenge, as reflected in invited plenary and keynote speakers as well as the cut and thrust of debate on the conference floor, is to address the important role of chemical measurement and confidence in the domestic and international systems of measurement.
