Discrete Series Characters for GL(n, q)

The discrete series characters of the finite general linear group GL(n, q) are expressed as uniquely defined integral linear combinations of characters induced from linear characters on certain subgroups Hd, n of GL(n, q). The coefficients in these linear combinations are determined (for all n, q) by a family of polynomials r(T) Z[T] indexed by the set of all partitions .

Compact Laws of the Iterated Logarithm for B-Valued Random Variables with Two-Dimensional Indices

Let be a real separable Banach space and {X, X _{n, m}; (n, m) N ²} B-valued i.i.d. random variables. Set . In this paper, the compact law of the iterated logarithm, CLIL(D), for B-valued random variables with two-dimensional indices ranging over a subset D of N ² is studied. There is a gap between the moment conditions for CLIL(N ¹) and those for CLIL(N ²). The main result of this paper fills this gap by presenting necessary and sufficient conditions for the sequence to be almost surely conditionally compact in B, where, for 0, 1 r 2, N ^r (, ) = {(n, m) N ²; n m n exp{(log n) ^r–1 (n)}} and (·) is any positive, continuous, nondecreasing function such that (t)/(log log t) is eventually decreasing as t , for some > 0.

In this paper we prove that the moduli spaces MI _2n+1(k) of mathematical instanton bundles on ²ⁿ⁺¹ with quantum number k are singular for n 2 and k 3 ,giving a positive answer to a conjecture made by Ancona and Ottaviani in 1993.     

The Berry-Esseén theorem for strongly mixing Harris recurrent Markov chains

Summary Let ₀, ₁,... be a stationary Harris recurrent Markov chain with state space (E,), and let f E IR, X _i=f(_i). It is known that the sequence X _i, i0, is strongly mixing, i.e. (n)>0 where (n) are the strong (or Rosenblatt) mixing coefficients. If (n) decreases at a sufficiently fast rate and f is suitable, then a central limit holds for the partial sums . The present paper gives conditions in order that the convergence rates are O(n ^–1/2).
