Acid-base properties of hydrazones derived from 8-hydrazinoquinoline and substituted salicylaldehydes were studied. Under the experimental conditions, only the first step of ionization of the hydrazones is realized. The ionization constants were calculated quantum-chemically. Copper(II) complexes of these hydrazones, (HL)Cu(X)(CH3OH)n, were isolated (HL? is the monodeprotonated form of hydrazones, and X? is the acid residue). According to the data of elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, conductometry, and magnetochemistry, the majority of the complexes have a binuclear structure. The copper(II) ions in the dimeric complex show antiferromagnetic exchange coupling. The ionization constants of the hydrazones and the exchange parameters strongly depend on the substituent in the salicylaldehyde moiety.

Dioxomolybdenum(VI) complexes [MoO2L(CH3OH)] (L?=?L1?=?N′-(2-hydroxy-5nitrobenzylidene)isonicotinoylhydrazide for 1, L?=?L2?=?N′-(4-diethylamino-2-hydroxybenzylidene)-4-methylbenzohydrazide for 2) were prepared and structurally characterized by physicochemical and spectroscopic methods and single-crystal X-ray determination. Mo in the complexes is octahedrally coordinated. Both complexes show effective catalysis in oxidation of cyclohexene, vinylbenzene, 1-butylene, and 1-pentene, to their corresponding epoxides. In general, high epoxide yields (over 89%) and selectivity (100%) were observed for all aliphatic and aromatic substrates.

The results of static magnetic susceptibility studies of spacer-armed dinuclear copper(II) complexes with dicarboxylic acid acylhydrazones are described. Weak exchange coupling between paramagnetic centers has been detected with an exchange parameter value of −2J ∼ 1–7 cm−1. Short intermolecular contacts give rise to additional weak antiferromagnetic exchange coupling between copper cations comparable in terms of energy with superexchange inside the dinuclear complex (−zJ′ ∼ 0.6–5.0 cm−1).

The acid-base properties of acetyl-and heptoylhydrazones of substituted salicylaldehyde derivatives and the stability of their copper(II) complexes have been studied. For both sets of compounds, the ionization constants of the hydrazones and the stability constants of hydrazone complexes are linear functions of the substituent constants σ. An analogous tendency is found for the antiferromagnetic exchange interaction parameters in dimeric copper(II) nitrate complexes of heptoylhydrazones of substituted salicylaldehyde derivatives. A correlation between the protolytic properties of hydrazones and the magnetic properties of their complexes is suggested.

Summary Copper(II) complexes with the Schiff bases derived from Salicylaldehyde and its 5-chloro-, 5-bromo-, 5-nitro-, 3-ethoxy- and 3,5-dichloro derivatives, or from 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde ando-hydroxybenzylamine, have been synthesized and characterized on the basis of elemental analysis, i.r. and electronic spectra and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The Schiff bases behave as tridentate dibasic O, N and O donor ligands and form complexes with 11 metal: ligand stoichiometry which exhibit subnormal magnetic moments ( eff=0.88–0.98 B.M.) and are involved in strong antifer-romagnetic exchange (–J=482–525 cm–1). The complexes exhibit a d-d band atca. 1600 cm–1. A dimeric structure with aminophenolic oxygen atoms as the bridging atoms is proposed on the basis of i.r. and magnetic data.

Hydrazones and azines of 5-chloro-, 5-bromo-, 3,5-di-iodo-, 5-nitro- and 3-nitro salicylaldehydes have been prepared by condensation with hydrazine. They have been characterized by their melting points, solubilities, elemental analysis and infrared spectra. Ambiguous literature on some of the compounds has also been clarified. Conditions for smooth condensation have been worked out. The extent of the condensation is found to depend on the nature of the substituent group in the salicylaldehydes.

This paper describes the preparation of [Cu(bh)(2)(H(2)O)(2)](NO(3))(2)], [Cu(ibh)(2)(NO(3))(2)], [Cu(ibh)(2)(H(2)O)(2)](NO(3))(2) and [Cu(iinh)(2)(NO(3))(2)] (bh=benzoyl hydrazine (C(6)H(5)CONHNH(2)); ibh=isonicotinoyl hydrazine (NC(5)H(4)CONHNH(2)); ibh=isopropanone benzoyl hydrazone (C(6)H(5)CONHN=C(CH(3))(2); iinh=isopropanone isonicotinoyl hydrazone (NC(5)H(4)CONHN=C(CH(3))(2)). These copper(II) complexes are characterized by elemental analyses, molar conductances, dehydration studies, ESR, IR and electronic spectral studies. The electronic and ESR spectra indicate that each complex exhibits a six-coordinate tetragonally distorted octahedral geometry in the solid state and in DMSO solution. The ESR spectra of most of the complexes are typically isotropic type at room temperature (300K) in solid state as well as in DMSO solution. However, all the complexes exhibit invariably axial signals at 77K in DMSO solution. The trend g(||)>g( perpendicular)>g(e,) observed in all the complexes suggests the presence of an unpaired electron in the [Formula: see text] orbital of the Cu(II). The bh and inh ligands bond to Cu(II) through the >CO and NH(2) groups whereas, ibh and iinh bond through >CO and >CN groups. The IR spectra of bh and ibh complexes also show HOH stretching and bending modes of coordinated water.

In this study, simultaneous TG/DTG-DTA technique was used for two cobalt(II) complexes with neocuproine(neoc) and the anion of a substituted salicylaldehyde ligand (X-salo) (X?=?3-OCH3, or 5-CH3) with the general formula [Co(X-salo)2(neoc)], to determine their thermal degradation in inert atmosphere, which was found to be a multi-step decomposition related to the release of the ligand molecules. The solid material at 1300?°C (verified with PXRD) was a mixture of carbonaceous metal cobalt. Evolved gas analysis by coupled TG-MS verified the elimination of a formaldehyde molecule in the first decomposition stage, initially proposed by the percentage mass loss data. By single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis an octahedral geometry of the complex [Co(3-OCH3-salo)2(neoc)] was found. The variable temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements showed a paramagnetic nature of the complexes, in accordance with their molecular structure. Finally, for the determination of the activation energy (E) two different methods (the isoconversional methods of Ozawa, Flynn and Wall (OFW) and Friedman) were used comparatively.

Summary CuII complexes of 1-salicoyl-4-phenylthiosemicarbazide (SPT) have been synthesized and characterized by means of elemental analysis, magnetic measurements, and i.r. and e.p.r. spectroscopic methods; 1H- and 13C-n.m.r. and mass spectral data on the thiosemicarbazide are also reported. A paramagnetic complex eff= 1.298 B.M., is formed with copper(II) sulphate; the low magnetic moment and the e.p.r. spectral data suggest a binuclear species. A diamagnetic complex due to a strong Cu-Cu interaction has been isolated with copper(II) chloride.

Summary A QSAR based on a multiple regression analysis for 15 copper(II) semi- and thiosemicarbazone complexes with cytotoxic properties is presented. In vitro cytotoxicity was selected as the dependent variable and Van der Waals volumes (Vm), octanol- water partition coefficients (logP), specific rate constants of the copper(II) complexes towards superoxide radicals (k s ) and variation in C=N vibration bands (CN) in IR spectra of the complexes with respect to the free ligands were selected as the independent variables. The stepwise regression procedure and the all possible regressions were practiced in the analysis of the data. The orthogonality analysis proved noncollinearity among the variables. According to the obtained equation the two best copper(II) complexes were submitted to a broad in vivo screening study and resulted to be active against La, P-388 and L-1210 leukemias.

A series of copper(II) complexes with substituted phenanthroline ligands has been synthesized and characterized electronically and structurally. The compounds that have been prepared include the monosubstituted ligand complexes of the general formula [Cu(5-R-phen)(2)(CH(3)CN)](BF(4))(2), where R = NO(2), Cl, H, or Me, and the disubstituted ligand complex [Cu(5,6-Me(2)-phen)(2)(CH(3)CN)](BF(4))(2). The complexes [Cu(5-NO(2)-phen)(2)(CH(3)CN](BF(4))(2) (1), [Cu(5-Cl-phen)(2)(CH(3)CN)](BF(4))(2) (2), [Cu(o-phen)(2)(CH(3)CN)](BF(4))(2) (3), and [Cu(5-Me-phen)(2)(CH(3)CN)](BF(4))(2) (4) each crystallize in the space group C2/c with compounds 1, 2, and 4 comprising an isomorphous set. The disubstituted complex [Cu(5,6-Me(2)-phen)(2)(CH(3)CN)](BF(4))(2) (5) crystallizes in the space group P2(1)/c. Each structure is characterized by a distorted trigonal bipyramidal arrangement of ligands around the central copper atom with approximate or exact C(2) symmetry. The progression from electron-withdrawing to electron-donating substituents on the phenanthroline ligands correlates with less accessible reduction potentials for the bis-chelate complexes.

In the present work 2-formylpyridine-para-chloro-phenyl hydrazone (H2FopClPh) and 2-formylpyridine-para-nitro-phenyl hydrazone (H2FopNO2Ph) were obtained, as well as their copper(II) and zinc(II) complexes [Cu(H2FopClPh)Cl2] (1), [Cu(2FopNO2Ph)Cl] (2), [Zn(H2FopClPh)Cl2] (3) and [Zn(H2FopNO2Ph)Cl2] (4). Upon re-crystallization in DMSO:acetone conversion of 2 into [Cu(2FopNO2Ph)Cl(DMSO)] (2a) and of 4 into [Zn(2FopNO2Ph)Cl(DMSO)] (4a) occurred. The crystal structures of 1, 2a, 3 and 4a were determined.

The complexation behaviour of copper(II) with a series of selected dihydroxycoumarins has been studied. Copper(II) binary complexes with esculetin, daphnetin and their 4-methyl and 4-phenyl derivatives and ternary complexes having a secondary ligand, ammonia or pyridine have bean synthesized. The general composition of binary complexes has bean found to be [Cu (H2O)2 (HL)2] and that of ternary complexes as [Cu (L) (X)4] (where X = NH3 or C5H5N). The magnetic studies indicate all the complexes to be monomeric in nature. IR studies show that one of the two phenolic hydroxyl groups present in the ligand is lost during complexation. It is concluded that of the four ligands attached to the copper atom dihydroxycoumarin is bound most firmly.

Complexes [Cu3(DDST)]Cl6, [Cu3(DOCD)]Cl6 and [Cu3(DTTD)]Cl6?·?H2O and the copper ion-free ligand hydrochlorides DDST?·?12HCl and DOCD?·?12HCl are supported by elemental analyses, conductivity measurements and spectroscopic studies. Potentiometric equilibrium studies on DDST and DOCD hydrochlorides and their copper complexes also support the structures.

A new TEMPO bearing tert-butylated salicylaldimines 1 and 2, as well as early reported 3, and their bis(N-TEMPO-tert-butylated salicylaldiminato)palladium(II) biradical complexes 46 have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, IR, UV/vis, ESR and an SQUID magnetometer. The solid state g-factors (2.0116–2.0168) for 46 suggest the existence of the significant metal-orbital contribution to the SOMO of nitroxyl radicals. The χmT vs. T plots for 1 and 2 indicate that the χmT decreases as T is lowered from 300 to 20 K, suggesting the existence of weak antiferromagnetic interactions in these radicals. Variable-temperature dependence (10–300 K) magnetic susceptibility data for biradical complexes 46 revealed the existence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic behavior around at 10–220 K range for 4. The 1/χm data for 16 follow the Curie–Weiss law with negative θ throughout the above temperature range.
