We study nonuniform lattices in the automorphism groupG of a locally finite simplicial treeX. In particular, we are interested in classifying lattices up to commensurability inG. We introduce two new commensurability invariants:quotient growth, which measures the growth of the noncompact quotient of the lattice; andstabilizer growth, which measures the growth of the orders of finite stabilizers in a fundamental domain as a function of distance from a fixed basepoint. WhenX is the biregular treeX m,n, we construct lattices realizing all triples of covolume, quotient growth, and stabilizer growth satisfying some mild conditions. In particular, for each positive real numberν we construct uncountably many noncommensurable lattices with covolumeν. Supported in part by NSF grants DMS-9704640 and DMS-0244542. Summary A fundamental relationship is established between Jones' knot invariants and Vassiliev's knot invariants. We give a new upper bound onn d(d+1)n on the number of realizable order types of simple configurations ofn points inR d , and ofn2d 2 n on the number of realizable combinatorial types of simple configurations. We consider several results, each of which uses some type of “L 2” estimate to provide information about harmonic measure on planar domains. The first gives an a.e. characterization of tangent points of a curve in terms of a certain geometric square function. Our next result is anL p estimate relating the derivative of a conformal mapping to its Schwarzian derivative. One consequence of this is an estimate on harmonic measure generalizing Lavrentiev’s estimate for rectifiable domains. Finally, we considerL 2 estimates for Schwarzian derivatives and the question of when a Riemann mapping ϕ has log ϕ′ in BMO. Supported in part by NSF Grant DMS-91-00671. We approach the problem of uniformization of general Riemann surfaces through consideration of the curvature equation, and in particular the problem of constructing Poincaré metrics (i.e., complete metrics of constant negative curvature) by solving the equation Δu-e 2u=Ko(z) on general open surfaces. A few other topics are discussed, including boundary behavior of the conformal factore 2u giving the Poincaré metric when the Riemann surface has smoothly bounded compact closure, and also a curvature equation proof of Koebe's disk theorem. We present a classification of maximal amenable subgroups of a semi-simple groupG. The result is that modulo a technical connectivity condition, there are precisely 2′ conjugacy classes of such subgroups ofG and we shall describe them explicitly. Herel is the split rank of the groupG. These groups are the isotropy groups of the action ofG on the Satake-Furstenberg compactification of the associated symmetric space and our results give necessary and sufficient conditions for a subgroup to have a fixed point in this compactification. We also study the action ofG on the set of all measures on its maximal boundary. One consequence of this is a proof that the algebraic hull of an amenable subgroup of a linear group is amenable. By a cyclic layer of a finite Galois extension,E/K, of fields one means a cyclic extension,L/F, of fields whereELFK. LetC(E/K) denote the subgroup of the relative Brauer group, Br(E/K), generated by the various subgroups cor(Br(L/F)) asL/F ranges over all cyclic layers ofE/K and where cor denotes the corestriction map into Br(E/K). A conformal map Φ on the unit disk is called a compact deformation of a Fuchsian groupG if Φ has a quasiconformal extension to the planeh which conjugatesG to a Kleinian group G′ and the dilatation ofh is compactly supported moduloG. Recently, Ye, Tapia and Zhang (1991) demonstrated that Mizuno—Todd—Ye's predictor—corrector interior-point algorithm for linear programming maintains the O( L)-iteration complexity while exhibiting superlinear convergence of the duality gap to zero under the assumption that the iteration sequence converges, and quadratic convergence of the duality gap to zero under the assumption of nondegeneracy. In this paper we establish the quadratic convergence result without any assumption concerning the convergence of the iteration sequence or nondegeneracy. This surprising result, to our knowledge, is the first instance of a demonstration of polynomiality and superlinear (or quadratic) convergence for an interior-point algorithm which does not assume the convergence of the iteration sequence or nondegeneracy.Supported in part by NSF Grant DDM-8922636 and NSF Coop. Suppose that X is a Polish space and E is a countable Borel equivalence relation on X. We show that if there is a Borel assignment of means to the equivalence classes of E, then E is smooth. We also show that if there is a Baire measurable assignment of means to the equivalence classes of E, then E is generically smooth. Suitably scaled Laguerre functions are an approximate identity for multiplicative convolution with test functions on the half line. As an application, we derive a precise connection between the Mikhlin-type expansion of a singular integral operator on a Heisenberg groupH n and its natural restriction toH n modulo the center. We study concentration inequalities for Lipschitz functions on graphs by estimating the optimal constant in exponential moments of subgaussian type.
