A possibility for investigations of quantum electrodynamics (QED) in experiments on the hyperfine splitting in heavy ions is examined. It is found that QED effects can be probed on the level of a few percent in a specific difference of the hyperfine splitting values in hydrogenlike and lithiumlike bismuth. This could provide a test of QED in the strongest electric field available at present for experimental study.  相似文献

The hyperfine splitting of the ground state of three-electron ions is studied in detail with the help of the multi-configuration Dirac-Fock method. We study the role of the magnetic electron-electron interaction and of the negative energy continuum. An all-order evaluation of some vacuum polarization corrections is performed. Electron-loss processes arising in collisions of heavy many-electron ions (like U28+) with neutral atoms (H, N, Ar) are considered over a wide energy range including relativistic energies. Various computer codes (LOSS, LOSS-R, HERION, and RICODE), created for calculation of the electron-loss cross sections, and their capability are described. Recommended data on the electron-loss cross sections of U28+ ions colliding with H, N, Ar targets and predicted lifetimes of U28+ ion beams in accelerator are given. The ground-state hyperfine splitting values of high-Z boronlike ions are calculated. Calculation of the interelectronic-interaction contribution is based on a combination of the 1/Z perturbation theory and the large-scale configuration-interaction Dirac-Fock-Sturm method. The screened QED corrections are evaluated utilizing an effective screening potential approach. Total hyperfine splitting energies are presented for several B-like ions of particular interest: 45Sc16+, 57Fe21+, 207Pb77+, and 209Bi78+. For lead and bismuth the experimental values of the 1s hyperfine splitting are employed to improve significantly the theoretical results by reducing the uncertainty due to the nuclear effects.  相似文献

Laser spectroscopy of highly charged heavy ions in the storage ring provides an excellent tool for a test of QED in ultra-high electric and magnetic fields. Discrepancies between experimental and theoretical values are so far mainly explained by uncertainties of nuclear properties. New experimental possibilities can avoid these problems by additional measurements in lithium-like systems. The present status of calculations of the hyperfine splitting and the transition probability between the hyperfine splitting components in hydrogen and lithium like ions is discussed. The results of the calculations are compared with recent experimental data. A special attention is focused on the hyperfine splitting in hydrogen like lead and lithium like bismuth. It is shown that the theoretical prediction for the ground state hyperfine splitting in lead based on the single particle nuclear model for the Bohr-Weisskopf effect is in fair agreement with experiment. The theoretical prediction for the ground state hyperfine splitting in lithium like bismuth is improved due to more accurate calculations of the interelectronic interaction, QED, and nuclear corrections. ASACUSA collaboration at CERN’s antiproton decelerator (CERN AD) plans to measure the ground-state hyperfine splitting (GS-HFS) of antihydrogen () to test the CPT symmetry to high precision. Our scheme is to produce an (anti-) atomic beam with a novel two-frequency superconducting Paul trap, and to use sextupole magnets and a 1.4-GHz cavity to analyze the HFS resonance frequency.   相似文献

The technique of nuclear quantum beats (perturbed angular correlations) has been applied to the investigation of the hyperfine splitting of the2S1/2 ground state in Li-like fluorine ions. The large spatial size of magnetic charges (or dyons) and parity considerations are used to show that in models of the proton based on dyons the hyperfine splitting must be due to the magnetic moment produced by the electric charge. A method is developed to calculate the coefficients appearing in the Høye, Stell and Waisman analytic solution of the Ornstein-Zernike equation for a hard core potential with a direct correlation function of the two Yukawa form. The method is simple and makes the choice of a physical solution easy. The compressibility, energy and virial pressures are calculated in the vicinity of the liquid-gas transition region and their dependence on changing K 2, the amplitude of the repulsive Yukawa part, is analysed. In this short note we wish to point out that the instanton model, which was theoretically fascinating, has recently found application in explaining the hyperfine splitting of mesons and baryons. In particular, the flavour independence ofM v 2 -M P 2 (i.e. the squared mass difference of the vector and the pseudoscalar mesons), known to be constant for the strange and non-strange mesons in theu,d and the charm quark sectors, have recently been shown to be the same for the beauty sector through experiments. This flavour independence and the magnitude of the splitting agrees remarkably well with the instanton model.  相似文献
