Toeplitz covariance matrices are used in the analysis of stationary stochastic processes and a wide range of applications including radar imaging, target detection, speech recognition, and communications systems. In this paper, we consider optimal estimation of large Toeplitz covariance matrices and establish the minimax rate of convergence for two commonly used parameter spaces under the spectral norm. The properties of the tapering and banding estimators are studied in detail and are used to obtain the minimax upper bound. The results also reveal a fundamental difference between the tapering and banding estimators over certain parameter spaces. The minimax lower bound is derived through a novel construction of a more informative experiment for which the minimax lower bound is obtained through an equivalent Gaussian scale model and through a careful selection of a finite collection of least favorable parameters. In addition, optimal rate of convergence for estimating the inverse of a Toeplitz covariance matrix is also established.  相似文献

Let F be a distribution function in the maximal domain of attraction of the Gumbel distribution such that −log(1−F(x))=x1/θL(x) for a positive real number θ, called the Weibull tail index, and a slowly varying function L. It is well known that the estimators of θ have a very slow rate of convergence. We establish here a sharp optimality result in the minimax sense, that is when L is treated as an infinite dimensional nuisance parameter belonging to some functional class. We also establish the rate optimal asymptotic property of a data-driven choice of the sample fraction that is used for estimation.  相似文献

High order Parzen windows are considered with data drawn from unbounded sampling processes. Convergence analysis is established by imposing a moment hypothesis on the unbounded sampling outputs and some decay conditions on the marginal distributions. Approximation on an unbounded interval is studied in this work by means of a newly-defined two-parameter polynomial operator based on Chlodowsky polynomials. The operator’s properties including convergence rate are investigated using the weighted modulus of continuity. An example is given to illustrate the effect of the parameters. In this paper, we discuss properties of the ω,q-Bernstein polynomials introduced by S. Lewanowicz and P. Woźny in [S. Lewanowicz, P. Woźny, Generalized Bernstein polynomials, BIT 44 (1) (2004) 63–78], where fC[0,1], ω,q>0, ω≠1,q−1,…,qn+1. When ω=0, we recover the q-Bernstein polynomials introduced by [G.M. Phillips, Bernstein polynomials based on the q-integers, Ann. Numer. Math. 4 (1997) 511–518]; when q=1, we recover the classical Bernstein polynomials. We compute the second moment of , and demonstrate that if f is convex and ω,q(0,1) or (1,∞), then are monotonically decreasing in n for all x[0,1]. We prove that for ω(0,1), qn(0,1], the sequence converges to f uniformly on [0,1] for each fC[0,1] if and only if limn→∞qn=1. For fixed ω,q(0,1), we prove that the sequence converges for each fC[0,1] and obtain the estimates for the rate of convergence of by the modulus of continuity of f, and the estimates are sharp in the sense of order for Lipschitz continuous functions.  相似文献

Coupling techniques are essential to combining different numerical methods together for the purpose of solving an elliptic boundary value problem. By means of nonconforming constraints, the combinations of various Lagrange finite element methods often cause reduced rates of convergence. In this article, we present a method using penalty plus hybrid technique to match different finite element methods such that the optimal convergence rates in the ‖ · ‖h and zero norms of errors of the solution can always be achieved. Also, such a coupling technique will lead to an optimal asymptotic condition number for the associated coefficient matrix. Moreover, this study can easily be extended for combining the finite difference method with the finite element method to also yield the optimal rate of convergence.  相似文献

For a bilinear form obtained by adding a Dirac mass to a positive definite moment functional defined in the linear space of polynomials in several variables, explicit formulas of orthogonal polynomials are derived from the orthogonal polynomials associated with the moment functional. Explicit formula for the reproducing kernel is also derived and used to establish certain inequalities for classical orthogonal polynomials.  相似文献
