Normal surface theory is used to study Dehn fillings of a knot-manifold. We use that any triangulation of a knot-manifold may be modified to a triangulation having just one vertex in the boundary. In this situation, it is shown that there is a finite computable set of slopes on the boundary of the knot-manifold, which come from boundary slopes of normal or almost normal surfaces. This is combined with existence theorems for normal and almost normal surfaces to construct algorithms to determine precisely those manifolds obtained by Dehn filling of a given knot-manifold that: (1) are reducible, (2) contain two-sided incompressible surfaces, (3) are Haken, (4) fiber over S1, (5) are the 3-sphere, and (6) are a lens space. Each of these algorithms is a finite computation.Moreover, in the case of essential surfaces, we show that the topology of each filled manifold is strongly reflected in the combinatorial properties of a triangulation of the knot-manifold with just one vertex in the boundary. If a filled manifold contains an essential surface then the knot-manifold contains an essential normal vertex solution which caps off to an essential surface of the same type in the filled manifold. (Normal vertex solutions are the premier class of normal surface and are computable.)  相似文献

Following ideas of Özbağcı–Stipsicz, a proof based on contact Dehn surgery is given of Eliashberg's concave filling theorem for contact 3-manifolds. Gromov proposed an averaged version of the Dehn function and claimed that in many cases it should be subasymptotic to the Dehn function. Using results on random walks in nilpotent groups, we confirm this claim for most nilpotent groups. In particular, if a nilpotent group satisfies the isoperimetric inequality δ(l)<Clα for α>2, then it satisfies the averaged isoperimetric inequality . In the case of non-abelian free nilpotent groups, the bounds we give are asymptotically sharp.  相似文献

Let Mod(Sg) be the mapping class group of the closed orientable surface Sg of genus g1. In this paper, we develop various methods for factoring periodic mapping classes into Dehn twists, up to conjugacy. As applications, we develop methods for factoring certain roots of Dehn twists as words in Dehn twists. We will also show the existence of conjugates of periodic maps of order 4g and 4g+2, for g2, whose product is pseudo-Anosov.  相似文献

It is proved that in any finite representation of any finitely generated nilpotent group of nilpotency class l ⩾ 1, the averaged Dehn function σ(n) is subasymptotic w.r.t. the function nl+1. We show that the averaged Dehn function with respect to each finite presentation of an arbitrary finitely generated class 2 nilpotent group is subcubic. For the finite rank 2 free class 2 nilpotent group this implies the subasymptoticity of the averaged Dehn function in the sense of M. Given a finitely presented group , finitely generated subgroup of , and a monomorphism , we obtain an upper bound of the Dehn function of the corresponding HNN-extension in terms of the Dehn function of and the distortion of in . Using such a bound, we construct first examples of non-polycyclic solvable groups with polynomial Dehn functions. The constructed groups are metabelian and contain the solvable Baumslag-Solitar groups. In particular, this answers a question posed by Birget, Ol'shanskii, Rips, and Sapir.

In this article we show no Dehn surgery on nontrivial strongly invertible knots can yield the lens space for any integer . In order to do that, we determine band attaches to -torus links producing the trivial knot.
