The Hilbert modular fourfold determined by the totally real quartic number field is a desingularization of a natural compactification of the quotient space , where PSL acts on by fractional linear transformations via the four embeddings of into . The arithmetic genus, equal to one plus the dimension of the space of Hilbert modular cusp forms of weight , is a birational invariant useful in the classification of these varieties. In this work, we describe an algorithm allowing for the automated computation of the arithmetic genus and give sample results.

We study minimum energy point charges on the unit sphere in , , that interact according to the logarithmic potential , where is the Euclidean distance between points. Such optimal -point configurations are uniformly distributed as . We quantify this result by estimating the spherical cap discrepancy of optimal energy configurations. The estimate is of order . Essential is an improvement of the lower bound of the optimal logarithmic energy which yields the second term in the asymptotical expansion of the optimal energy. Previously, this was known for the unit sphere in only. Furthermore, we present an upper bound for the error of integration for an equally-weighted numerical integration rule with the nodes forming an optimal logarithmic energy configuration. For polynomials of degree at most this bound is as . For continuous functions of satisfying a Lipschitz condition with constant the bound is as .

In this paper we continue their work. Firstly, we establish a comparison theorem of Kolmogorov type on , from which we get an inequality of Landau-Kolmogorov type. Secondly, we apply these results to determine the exact values of the Gel'fand -width of in , . Finally, we calculate the exact values of Kolmogorov -width, linear -width, and information -width of in , , .

We know from Littlewood (1968) that the moments of order of the classical Rudin-Shapiro polynomials satisfy a linear recurrence of degree . In a previous article, we developed a new approach, which enables us to compute exactly all the moments of even order for . We were also able to check a conjecture on the asymptotic behavior of , namely , where , for even and . Now for every integer there exists a sequence of generalized Rudin-Shapiro polynomials, denoted by . In this paper, we extend our earlier method to these polynomials. In particular, the moments have been completely determined for and , for and and for and . For higher values of and , we formulate a natural conjecture, which implies that , where is an explicit constant.

In previous papers the arithmetic of hierarchical matrices has been described, which allows us to compute the inverse, for instance, of finite element stiffness matrices discretising an elliptic operator The required computing time is up to logarithmic factors linear in the dimension of the matrix. In particular, this technique can be used for the computation of the discrete analogue of a resolvent

In the present paper, we consider various operator functions, the operator exponential negative fractional powers , the cosine operator function and, finally, the solution operator of the Lyapunov equation. Using the Dunford-Cauchy representation, we get integrals which can be discretised by a quadrature formula which involves the resolvents mentioned above. We give error estimates which are partly exponentially, partly polynomially decreasing.

Bounds for the distance between adjacent zeros of cylinder functions are given; and are such that ; stands for the th positive zero of the cylinder (Bessel) function , , .

These bounds, together with the application of modified (global) Newton methods based on the monotonic functions and , give rise to forward ( ) and backward ( ) iterative relations between consecutive zeros of cylinder functions.

The problem of finding all the positive real zeros of Bessel functions for any real and inside an interval , 0$">, is solved in a simple way.

A theoretical analysis of a first-order least-squares finite element method for second-order self-adjoint elliptic problems is presented. We investigate the coupling effect of the approximate solutions for the primary function and for the flux . We prove that the accuracy of the approximate solution for the primary function is weakly affected by the flux . That is, the bound for is dependent on , but only through the best approximation for multiplied by a factor of meshsize . Similarly, we provide that the bound for is dependent on , but only through the best approximation for multiplied by a factor of the meshsize . This weak coupling is not true for the non-selfadjoint case. We provide the numerical experiment supporting the theorems in this paper.

We present an algorithm that, on input of an integer together with its prime factorization, constructs a finite field and an elliptic curve over for which has order . Although it is unproved that this can be done for all , a heuristic analysis shows that the algorithm has an expected run time that is polynomial in , where is the number of distinct prime factors of . In the cryptographically relevant case where is prime, an expected run time can be achieved. We illustrate the efficiency of the algorithm by constructing elliptic curves with point groups of order and nextprime.

We study quasi-Monte Carlo algorithms based on low discrepancy sequences for multivariate integration. We consider the problem of how the minimal number of function evaluations needed to reduce the worst-case error from its initial error by a factor of depends on and the dimension . Strong tractability means that it does not depend on and is bounded by a polynomial in . The least possible value of the power of is called the -exponent of strong tractability. Sloan and Wozniakowski established a necessary and sufficient condition of strong tractability in weighted Sobolev spaces, and showed that the -exponent of strong tractability is between 1 and 2. However, their proof is not constructive.

In this paper we prove in a constructive way that multivariate integration in some weighted Sobolev spaces is strongly tractable with -exponent equal to 1, which is the best possible value under a stronger assumption than Sloan and Wozniakowski's assumption. We show that quasi-Monte Carlo algorithms using Niederreiter's -sequences and Sobol sequences achieve the optimal convergence order for any 0$"> independent of the dimension with a worst case deterministic guarantee (where is the number of function evaluations). This implies that strong tractability with the best -exponent can be achieved in appropriate weighted Sobolev spaces by using Niederreiter's -sequences and Sobol sequences.

Let be a self-adjoint operator acting on a Hilbert space . A complex number is in the second order spectrum of relative to a finite-dimensional subspace iff the truncation to of is not invertible. This definition was first introduced in Davies, 1998, and according to the results of Levin and Shargorodsky in 2004, these sets provide a method for estimating eigenvalues free from the problems of spectral pollution. In this paper we investigate various aspects related to the issue of approximation using second order spectra. Our main result shows that under fairly mild hypothesis on the uniform limit of these sets, as increases towards , contain the isolated eigenvalues of of finite multiplicity. Therefore, unlike the majority of the standard methods, second order spectra combine nonpollution and approximation at a very high level of generality.

This paper concerns the Rayleigh-Ritz method for computing an approximation to an eigenspace of a general matrix from a subspace that contains an approximation to . The method produces a pair that purports to approximate a pair , where is a basis for and . In this paper we consider the convergence of as the sine of the angle between and approaches zero. It is shown that under a natural hypothesis--called the uniform separation condition--the Ritz pairs converge to the eigenpair . When one is concerned with eigenvalues and eigenvectors, one can compute certain refined Ritz vectors whose convergence is guaranteed, even when the uniform separation condition is not satisfied. An attractive feature of the analysis is that it does not assume that has distinct eigenvalues or is diagonalizable.

In his 1961 paper, Marcel Golay showed how the search for pairs of binary sequences of length with complementary autocorrelation is at worst a problem. Andres, in his 1977 master's thesis, developed an algorithm which reduced this to a search and investigated lengths up to 58 for existence of pairs. In this paper, we describe refinements to this algorithm, enabling a search at length 82. We find no new pairs at the outstanding lengths 74 and 82. In extending the theory of composition, we are able to obtain a closed formula for the number of pairs of length generated by a primitive pair of length . Combining this with the results of searches at all allowable lengths up to 100, we identify five primitive pairs. All others pairs of lengths less than 100 may be derived using the methods outlined.

In this paper, we show uniform convergence of the Hermite-Fejér interpolation polynomials and based on the zeros of the Stieltjes polynomials and the product for and , respectively. To prove these results, we prove that the Lebesgue constants of Hermite-Fejér interpolation operators for the Stieltjes polynomials and the product are optimal, that is, the Lebesgue constants and have optimal order .
