In quasistatic solid mechanics the initial boundary value problem has to be solved in the space and time domain. The spatial discretization is done using finite elements. For the temporal discretization three different classes of Runge-Kutta methods are compared. These methods are diagonally implicit Runge-Kutta schemes (DIRK), linear implicit Runge-Kutta methods (Rosenbrock type methods) and half-explicit Runge-Kutta schemes (HERK). It will be shown that the application of half-explicit or linear-implicit Runge-Kutta methods can enormously reduce the computational time in particular situations. The implementation of implicit Runge-Kutta methods requires the solution of large systems of non-linear equations. Normally these equations are solved by a modified Newton process, which can be very expensive for problems of high dimension. The recently proposed triangularly implicit iteration methods for ODE-IVP solvers [5] substitute the Runge-Kutta matrixA in the Newton process for a triangular matrixT that approximatesA, hereby making the method suitable for parallel implementation. The matrixT is constructed according to a simple procedure, such that the stiff error components in the numerical solution are strongly damped. In this paper we prove for a large class of Runge-Kutta methods that this procedure can be carried out and that the diagnoal entries ofT are positive. This means that the linear systems that are to be solved have a non-singular matrix. The research reported in this paper was supported by STW (Dutch Foundation for Technical Sciences).  相似文献

Implicit Runge-Kutta (IRK) methods (such as the s-stage Radau IIA method with s=3,5, or 7) for solving stiff ordinary differential equation systems have excellent stability properties and high solution accuracy orders, but their high computing costs in solving their nonlinear stage equations have seriously limited their applications to large scale problems. To reduce such a cost, several approximate Newton algorithms were developed, including a commonly used one called the simplified Newton method. In this paper, a new approximate Jacobian matrix and two new test rules for controlling the updating of approximate Jacobian matrices are proposed, yielding an improved approximate Newton method. Theoretical and numerical analysis show that the improved approximate Newton method can significantly improve the convergence and performance of the simplified Newton method.  相似文献

Partitioned adaptive Runge-Kutta methods and their stability   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Summary This paper deals with the solution of partitioned systems of nonlinear stiff differential equations. Given a differential system, the user may specify some equations to be stiff and others to be nonstiff. For the numerical solution of such a system partitioned adaptive Runge-Kutta methods are studied. Nonstiff equations are integrated by an explicit Runge-Kutta method while an adaptive Runge-Kutta method is used for the stiff part of the system. The paper discusses numerical stability and contractivity as well as the implementation and usage of such compound methods. Test results for three partitioned stiff initial value problems for different tolerances are presented.  相似文献

A technique for deriving formulas for the second derivatives of a composite function with constrained variables is proposed. The original system of constraint equations is associated with a linear system of equations, whose solution is used to determine the Hessian of the function. The resulting formulas are applied to discrete problems obtained by approximating optimal control problems with the use of Runge-Kutta methods of various orders. For a particular optimal control problem, the numerical results obtained by the gradient method and Newton’s method with the resulting formulas are described and analyzed in detail.  相似文献

We employ B-series to analyze the order of Runge-Kutta (RK) methods that use simple iteration, modified Newton iteration or full Newton iteration to compute their internal stage values. Our assumptions about the initial guess for the internal stage values cover a wide range of practical schemes. Moreover, the analytical techniques developed in this paper can be applied in many other similar contexts. This work was supported in part by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, the Information Technology Research Centre of Ontario, and the Norwegian Research Council for Science and Humanities.  相似文献

Inspired by some implicit-explicit linear multistep schemes and additive Runge-Kutta methods, we develop a novel split Newton iterative algorithm for the numerical solution of nonlinear equations. The proposed method improves computational efficiency by reducing the computational cost of the Jacobian matrix. Consistency and global convergence of the new method are also maintained. To test its effectiveness, we apply the method to nonlinear reaction-diffusion equations, such as Burger’s-Huxley equation and fisher’s equation. Numerical examples suggest that the involved iterative method is much faster than the classical Newton’s method on a given time interval.

Symplecticness, stability, and asymptotic properties of Runge-Kutta, partitioned Runge-Kutta, and Runge-Kutta-Nystrom methods applied to the simple Hamiltonian system p = -vg, q = kp are studied. Some new results in connection with P-stability are presented. The main part is focused on backward error analysis. The numerical solution produced by a symplectic method with an appropriate stepsize is the exact solution of a perturbed Hamiltonian system at discrete points. This system is studied in detail and new results are derived. Numerical examples are presented.  相似文献

Mono-implicit Runge-Kutta methods can be used to generate implicit Runge-Kutta-Nyström (IRKN) methods for the numerical solution of systems of second-order differential equations. The paper is concerned with the investigation of the conditions to be fulfilled by the mono-implicit Runge-Kutta (MIRK) method in order to generate a mono-implicit Runge-Kutta-Nyström method (MIRKN) that is P-stable. One of the main theoretical results is the property that MIRK methods (in standard form) cannot generate MIRKN methods (in standard form) of order greater than 4. Many examples of MIRKN methods generated by MIRK methods are presented.  相似文献

Summary For the numerical solution of initial value problems of ordinary differential equations partitioned adaptive Runge-Kutta methods are studied. These methods consist of an adaptive Runge-Kutta methods for the treatment of a stiff system and a corresponding explicit Runge-Kutta method for a nonstiff system. First we modify the theory of Butcher series for partitioned adaptive Runge-Kutta methods. We show that for any explicit Runge-Kutta method there exists a translation invariant partitoned adaptive Runge-Kutta method of the same order. Secondly we derive a special translaton invariant partitioned adaptive Runge-Kutta method of order 3. An automatic stiffness detection and a stepsize control basing on Richardson-extrapolation are performed. Extensive tests and comparisons with the partitioned RKF4RW-algorithm from Rentrop [16] and the partitioned algorithm LSODA from Hindmarsh [9] and Petzold [15] show that the partitoned adaptive Runge-Kutta algorithm works reliable and gives good numericals results. Furthermore these tests show that the automatic stiffness detection in this algorithm is effective.  相似文献

An algebraic Newton-multigrid method is proposed in order to efficiently solve systems of nonlinear reaction-diffusion problems with stochastic coefficients. These problems model the conversion of starch into sugars in growing apples. The stochastic system is first converted into a large coupled system of deterministic equations by applying a stochastic Galerkin finite element discretization. This method leads to high-order accurate stochastic solutions. A stable and high-order time discretization is obtained by applying a fully implicit Runge-Kutta method. After Newton linearization, a point-based algebraic multigrid solution method is applied. In order to decrease the computational cost, alternative multigrid preconditioners are presented. Numerical results demonstrate the convergence properties, robustness and efficiency of the proposed multigrid methods.  相似文献

Implicit two-step peer methods are introduced for the solution of large stiff systems. Although these methods compute s-stage approximations in each time step one-by-one like diagonally-implicit Runge-Kutta methods the order of all stages is the same due to the two-step structure. The nonlinear stage equations are solved by an inexact Newton method using the Krylov solver FOM (Arnoldi??s method). The methods are zero-stable for arbitrary step size sequences. We construct different methods having order p=s in the multi-implicit case and order p=s?1 in the singly-implicit case with arbitrary step sizes and s??5. Numerical tests in Matlab for several semi-discretized partial differential equations show the efficiency of the methods compared to other Krylov codes.  相似文献

This paper deals with solving stiff systems of differential equations by implicit Multistep Runge-Kutta (MRK) methods. For this type of methods, nonlinear systems of dimension sd arise, where s is the number of Runge-Kutta stages and d the dimension of the problem. Applying a Newton process leads to linear systems of the same dimension, which can be very expensive to solve in practice. With a parallel iterative linear system solver, especially designed for MRK methods, we approximate these linear systems by s systems of dimension d, which can be solved in parallel on a computer with s processors. In terms of Jacobian evaluations and LU-decompositions, the k-steps-stage MRK applied with this technique is on s processors equally expensive as the widely used k-step Backward Differentiation Formula on 1 processor, whereas the stability properties are better than that of BDF. A simple implementation of both methods shows that, for the same number of Newton iterations, the accuracy delivered by the new method is higher than that of BDF.  相似文献

In this paper we develop a new procedure to control stepsize for Runge-Kutta methods applied to both ordinary differential equations and semi-explicit index 1 differential-algebraic equations. In contrast to the standard approach, the error control mechanism presented here is based on monitoring and controlling both the local and global errors of Runge-Kutta formulas. As a result, Runge-Kutta methods with the local-global stepsize control solve differential or differential-algebraic equations with any prescribed accuracy (up to round-off errors). For implicit Runge-Kutta formulas we give the sufficient number of both full and modified Newton iterations allowing the iterative approximations to be correctly used in the procedure of the local-global stepsize control. In addition, we develop a stable local-global error control mechanism which is applicable for stiff problems. Numerical tests support the theoretical results of the paper.  相似文献

Many optimization problems can be reformulated as a system of equations. One may use the generalized Newton method or the smoothing Newton method to solve the reformulated equations so that a solution of the original problem can be found. Such methods have been powerful tools to solve many optimization problems in the literature. In this paper, we propose a Newton-type algorithm for solving a class of monotone affine variational inequality problems (AVIPs for short). In the proposed algorithm, the techniques based on both the generalized Newton method and the smoothing Newton method are used. In particular, we show that the algorithm can find an exact solution of the AVIP in a finite number of iterations under an assumption that the solution set of the AVIP is nonempty. Preliminary numerical results are reported.  相似文献

We investigate the properties of dissipative full discretizations for the equations of motion associated with models of flow and radiative transport inside stars. We derive dissipative space discretizations and demonstrate that together with specially adapted total-variation-diminishing (TVD) or strongly stable Runge-Kutta time discretizations with adaptive step-size control this yields reliable and efficient integrators for the underlying high-dimensional nonlinear evolution equations. For the most general problem class, fully implicit SDIRK methods are demonstrated to be competitive when compared to popular explicit Runge-Kutta schemes as the additional effort for the solution of the associated nonlinear equations is compensated by the larger step-sizes admissible for strong stability and dissipativity. For the parameter regime associated with semiconvection we can use partitioned IMEX Runge-Kutta schemes, where the solution of the implicit part can be reduced to the solution of an elliptic problem. This yields a significant gain in performance as compared to either fully implicit or explicit time integrators. (© 2011 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

New methods are introduced for the time integration of the Fourier and Chebyshev methods of solution for dynamic differential equations. These methods are unconditionally stable, even though no matrix inversions are required. Time steps are chosen by accuracy requirements alone. For the Fourier method both leapfrog and Runge-Kutta methods are considered. For the Chebyshev method only Runge-Kutta schemes are tested. Numerical calculations are presented to verify the analytic results. Applications to the shallow water equations are presented.  相似文献
