Spectrophotometric studies of copper (II)—bis-2-pyridyl glycol complex

An aqueous solution ofbis-2-pyridyl glycol forms a deep blue water-soluble complex with an aqueous solution of copper (II) salts. The complex has an absorption maximum at 600–650 mµ between pH range 3·0–8·7. The complex is stable for four days and obeys Lambert-Beer’s law in the concentration range of 5·08–50·80 ppm. of copper (II) in solution. The optical density of the complex remains constant between pH 3·8–5·9. The molar composition as determined by the method of continuous variation and by the slope ratio method has been found to be 1:1. The limits of interference due to some foreign ions during the estimation of copper (II) have been determined.     

Separation and gravimetric determination of iron using oximidobenzotetronic acid

Using oximidobenzotetronic acid (OBTA) as a reagent, iron (II) has been separated and accurately determined gravimetrically in presence of 10-fold or more of Mn(II), Al(III), Cr(III), Ti(IV), Zr(IV), Th(IV), Ni(II), Zn (II), Mo (VI), Ca (II) Mg(II), tartrate, citrate, acetate, phosphate, sulphocyanide, fluoride W (VI), Cu (II), Bi (III) and Sn (II). Ce (IV), Ce (III), Co (II), V (V) and EDTA, however, interfere in the determination.     

Studies in the separation and determination of zirconium using vanillin as an analytical reagent

Vanillin, quantitatively precipitates zirconium between pH 5·0–6·5, as insoluble complex. This complex on ignition gives ZrO₂ which can be weighed. Zirconium can be readily separated and determined in the presence of varying quantities of chromium (III), cobalt (II), copper (II), manganese (II), molybdenum (VI), nickel (II), titanium (IV), tungsten (VI), uranium (VI), vanadium (V), zinc (II) and trivalent rare earths.     

Real-time onboard wind and windshear determination,part 2: Detection

This paper is concerned with windshear detection in connection with real-time wind identification (Ref. 1). It presents a comparative evaluation of two techniques, one based on the shear/downdraft factor and one based on the wind difference index. The comparison is done with reference to a particular microburst, that which caused the 1985 crash of Flight Delta 191 at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.The shear/downdraft factor has the merit of combining the effects of the shear and the downdraft into a single entity. However, its effectiveness is hampered by the fact that, in a real situation, the windshear is accompanied by free-stream turbulence, which tends to blur the resulting signal. In turn, this results in undesirable nuisance warnings if the magnitude of the shear factor due to free-stream turbulence is temporarily larger than that due to true windshear. Therefore, proper filtering is necessary prior to using the shear/downdraft factor in detection and guidance. One effective way for achieving this goal is to average the shear/downdraft factor over a specified time interval . The effect of on the average shear/downdraft factor is studied.     

Suboptimal policy determination for large-scale Markov decision processes,part 2: Implementation and numerical evaluation

We present an implementation of the procedure for determining a suboptimal policy for a large-scale Markov decision process (MDP) presented in Part 1. An operation count analysis illuminates the significant computational benefits of this procedure for determining an optimal policy relative to a procedure for determining a suboptimal policy based on state and action space aggregation. Results of a preliminary numerical study indicate that the quality of the suboptimal policy produced by the 3MDP approach shows promise.This research has been supported by NSF Grants Nos. The Lamplighter Group as a Group Generated by a 2-state Automaton, and its Spectrum

We realize the lamplighter group /2 as a group defined by a 2-state automaton. We study the corresponding action of this group on a binary tree and on its boundary. The final goal is the computation for a special system of generators of the spectrum of the Markov (or the random walk) operator which is [–1,1] in this case and of the spectral measure which is a discrete measure concentrated on a dense countable set of points in [–1,1] (a new effect unseen before for Markovian operators on groups which leads to a counterexample to the Strong Atiyah Conjecture). This is done by the computation of spectra of finite-dimensional approximations of the operator and uses an idea of fractalness in a similar way it was used by Bartholdi and Grigorchuk for the computation of the spectra of some branch groups. We also obtain the asymptotic of type e^–1/1–x of the spectral measure in the neighborhood of 1 and show that Følner sets grow exponentially.

On PSL(2,q) as a totally irregular collineation group

Non-abelian simple totally irregular collineation groups containing an involutorial perspectivity have been classified by the authors in a recent paper. They are PSL(2,q), PSL(3,q), PSU(3,q), Sz(q), the alternating group on 7 letters, and the second Janko sporadic simple group. In this article, we study PSL(2,q),q congruent to 1 modulo 4, as a collineation group containing an involutory homology.C. Y. Ho was partially supported by a NSA grant.     

Hull determination and type decomposition for a generalized effect algebra

In this article, we show that certain generalized boolean subalgebras of the exocenter of a generalized effect algebra (GEA) determine hull systems on the GEA in a manner analogous to the determination of a hull mapping on an effect algebra (EA) by its set of invariant elements. We show that a hull system on a GEA E induces a hull mapping on each interval E[0, p] in E, and, using hull systems, we identify certain special elements of E (e.g., η-subcentral elements, η-monads, and η-dyads). We also extend the type-decomposition theory for EAs to GEAs.
