Summary Let G be the first eigenvalue of the fixed membrane on a simply connected domainG, and letP G be the torsional rigidity ofG. We prove Pólya-Szegö's conjecture [14]: PG G 2 j 0 2 /2, by constructing a circleK such thatP K P G and K G. This result sharpens the classical isoperimetric theorem of Rayleigh [15], Faber [4] and Krahn [10].

We prove that for some families of finite groups, the isomorphism class of the group is completely determined by its Burnside ring. Namely, we prove the following: if two finite simple groups have isomorphic Burnside rings, then the groups are isomorphic; if G is either Hamiltonian or abelian or a minimal simple group, and G is any finite group such that B(G) B(G), then G G.Received: 22 April 2004  相似文献

Let L0 be a positive definite closed linear operator with domain of definition D(L0) dense in the Hilbert space H; let(, 1, 2) be the positive boundary value space of the operator L0 such that the restriction of L 0 * to ker 2 is the Friedrichs extension of the operator L0. We establish a test for nonnegativity of an operator T of the form Ty=L 0 * y+*(1–C)y, y D(T)= ker(2+), where :H and C: are respectively a compact operator and a bounded nonnegative operator.Translated fromMatematicheskie Metody i Fiziko-Mekhanicheskie Polya, Issue 32, 1990, pp. 30–33.  相似文献

Let G=GL n (F q ) be the finite general linear group and let M=M n (F q ) be the monoid of all n×n matrices over F q . Let B be a Borel subgroup of G, let W be the subgroup of permutation matrices, and let W be the monoid of all zero-one matrices which have at most one non-zero entry in each row and each column. The monoid plays the same role for M that the Weyl group W does for G. In particular there is a length function on which extends the length function on W and a C-algebra H C (M, B) which includes Iwahori's Hecke algebra H C (G, B) and shares many of its properties. For Jacques Tits on his sixtieth birthday  相似文献

For 0<1 and graphsG andH, we writeGH if any -proportion of the edges ofG span at least one copy ofH inG. As customary, we writeC k for a cycle of lengthk. We show that, for every fixed integerl1 and real >0, there exists a real constantC=C(l, ), such that almost every random graphG n, p withp=p(n)Cn –1+1/2l satisfiesG n,p1/2+ C 2l+1. In particular, for any fixedl1 and >0, this result implies the existence of very sparse graphsG withG 1/2+ C 2l+1.The first author was partially supported by NSERC. A-design is a family B 1,B 2,...,B v of subsets of X={1, 2,..., v} such that B i B j = for all i jand not all B i are of the same size. Ryser's andWoodall's -design conjecture states thateach -design can be obtained from a symmetricblock design by a certain complementation procedure. Our mainresult is that the conjecture is true when is twice a prime number.  相似文献

The spaceG B of -orbits of an [FIA] B groupG is a commutative hypergroup (=commutative convo in Jewett's terminology). Its space of hypergroup characters is a hypergroup itself (see [3]) which can be identified withE (G, B) (the extreme points ofB-invariant positive definite continuous functionsp:G withp (e)=1), endowed with the topology of compact convergence. We determine the structure space ofL 1 (E(G, B), PL ) where PL is the Plancherel measure (which is the Haar measure ofE(G, B)) and characterize the convolution algebrasM (E(G, B)) andL 1 (E(G, B)) via the inverse Fourier-Stieltjes transformation.  相似文献

LetG be a group andK(G, 1) an Eilenberg—MacLane space, i.e. 1(K(G,1))G, i (K(G,1))=0,i1. We give a purely algebraic proof that the second homology groupH 2(G)=H 2(G,)H 2(K(G,1)) is isomorphic to the group of stable equivalence classes of continuous mapsFK(G,1) inducing surjections on fundamental groups (resp. surjections, whereF{F g=closed orientable surface of genusg,g}. As a corollary we obtain an algebraic proof of the well-known isomorphismH 2(G)2(K(G,1)) (2-dimensional bordism group).  相似文献

Letf be a real-valued function sequence {f k } that converges to on a deleted neighborhoodD of . If there is a subsequence {f k(j) } and a number sequencex such that lim j x j = and either lim j f k(j) (x j )>lim sup x (x) or lim j f k(j) (x j ) x (x), thenf is said to display theGibbs phenomenon at . IfA is a (real) summability matrix, thenAf is a function sequence given by(Af) n (x)= k=0 a n,k f k (x). IfAf displays the Gibbs phenomenon wheneverf does, thenA is said to beGP-preserving. By replacingf k (x) withf k (x j )F k,j , the Gibbs phenomenon is viewed as a property of the matrixF, andGP-preserving matrices are determined by properties of the matrix productAF. The general results give explicit conditions on the entries {a n,k } that are necessary and/or sufficient forA to beGP-preserving. For example: if(x)0 thenF displaysGP iff lim k,j F k,j 0, and ifA isGP-preserving then lim n,k A n,k 0. IfA is a triangular matrix that is stronger than convergence, thenA is notGP-preserving. The general results are used to study the preservation of the Gibbs phenomenon by matrix methods of Nörlund, Hausdorff, and others.  相似文献

For a locally compact groupG and a groupB of topological automorphisms containing the inner automorphisms ofG and being relatively compact with respect to Birkhoff topology (that isG[FIA] B,B I(G)) the spaceG B of -orbits is a commutative hypergroup (=commutative convo inJewett's terminology) in a natural way asJewett has shown. Identifying the space of hypergroup characters ofG B withE(G, B) (the extreme points ofB-invariant positive definite continuous functionsp withp (e)=1, endowed with the topology of compact convergence) we prove thatE(G, B) is a hypergroup, the hypergroup dual ofG B.  相似文献

We consider a class K of real closed fields F, |F|=|G|=1, where G is a group of Archimedean classes of F, and cofinality of each symmetric gap of F is 1. We will show that this class is exactly a class of all bounded formal power series RG,1, where G is a divisible Abelian group, card(G)=1, under CH. A nonstandard real line *R, which is 1-set belongs to this class; we will also consider a construction RG(L,P),1 of fields from this class, where L is a totally ordered set, P is a totally ordered field, G(L,P) is a group of finite words. It will be describes symmetric gaps of such two fields in K, which are not 1-set. Suppose further that G is not a 2-group and that p is the least odd prime dividing |G| and move() m for all k-element subsets of . Then either || k + m or k (7m – 5) / 2, || (9m – 3)/2. Moreover when || > k + m, then move() m for every subset of .  相似文献

LetA be anM-matrix in standard lower block triangular form, with diagonal blocksA ii irreducible. LetS be the set of indices such that the diagonal blockA is singular. We define the singular graph ofA to be the setS with partial order defined by > if there exists a chain of non-zero blocksA i, Aij, , Al.Let 1 be the set of maximal elements ofS, and define thep-th level p ,p = 2, 3, , inductively as the set of maximal elements ofS \( 1 p-1). Denote by p the number of elements in p . The Weyr characteristic (associated with 0) ofA is defined to be (A) = ( 1, 2,, h ), where 1 + + p = dim KerA p ,p = 1, 2, , and h > 0, h+1 = 0.Using a special type of basis, called anS-basis, for the generalized eigenspaceE(A) of 0 ofA, we associate a matrixD withA. We show that(A) = ( 1, , h) if and only if certain submatricesD p,p+1 ,p = 1, , h – 1, ofD have full column rank. This condition is also necessary and sufficient forE(A) to have a basis consisting of non-negative vectors, which is a Jordan basis for –A. We also consider a given finite partially ordered setS, and we find a necessary and sufficient condition that allM-matricesA with singular graphS have(A) = ( 1, , h). This condition is satisfied ifS is a rooted forest. The work of the second-named author was partly supported by the National Science Foundation, under grant MPS-08618 A02.  相似文献

The cohomology H* (G/,) of the de Rham complex *(G/) of a compact solvmanifold G/ with deformed differential d = d + , where is a closed 1 -form, is studied. Such cohomologies naturally arise in Morse-Novikov theory. It is shown that, for any completely solvable Lie group G containing a cocompact lattice G, the cohomology H*(G/, ) is isomorphic to the cohomology H*( ) of the tangent Lie algebra of the group G with coefficients in the one-dimensional representation : defined by () = (). Moreover, the cohomology H *(G/,) is nontrivial if and only if -[] belongs to a finite subset of H 1(G/,) defined in terms of the Lie algebra .Translated from Matematicheskie Zametki, vol. 77, no. 1, 2005, pp. 67–79.Original Russian Text Copyright © 2005 by D. Let be the fundamental group of a closed orientable surface of genus g 1, and let R(, G)/G be the space of conjugacy classes of representations of into a connected real reductive Lie group G. Motivated by the theory of geometric quantization, we define a map ¯ on R(, G)/G and investigate whether the fibres of ¯ are isotropic with respect to the natural symplectic structure on R(, G)/G. If g = 2 and G = SU(2), then the foliation given by the fibres of ¯ is equivalent to a real polarization defined by Weitsman, and we reprove his result that the fibres are isotropic in this case. If g = 1 then the fibres of ¯ are also isotropic, but we give an example to show that in general they are not.  相似文献

Let be a G-symmetric graph whose vertex set admits a nontrivial G-invariant partition with block size v. Let be the quotient graph of relative to and [B,C] the bipartite subgraph of induced by adjacent blocks B,C of . In this paper we study such graphs for which is connected, (G, 2)-arc transitive and is almost covered by in the sense that [B,C] is a matching of v-1 2 edges. Such graphs arose as a natural extremal case in a previous study by the author with Li and Praeger. The case K v+1 is covered by results of Gardiner and Praeger. We consider here the general case where K v+1, and prove that, for some even integer n 4, is a near n-gonal graph with respect to a certain G-orbit on n-cycles of . Moreover, we prove that every (G, 2)-arc transitive near n-gonal graph with respect to a G-orbit on n-cycles arises as a quotient of a graph with these properties. (A near n-gonal graph is a connected graph of girth at least 4 together with a set of n-cycles of such that each 2-arc of is contained in a unique member of .)  相似文献

We consider the M/M/ queue with arrival rate , service rate and traffic intensity =/. We analyze the first passage distribution of the time the number of customers N(t) reaches the level c, starting from N(0)=m>c. If m=c+1 we refer to this time period as the congestion period above the level c. We give detailed asymptotic expansions for the distribution of this first passage time for , various ranges of m and c, and several different time scales. Numerical studies back up the asymptotic results.  相似文献

We consider the approximation by piecewise-constant functions for classes of functions of many variables defined by moduli of continuity of the form (1, ..., n ) = 1(1) + ... + n ( n ), where i ( i ) are ordinary moduli of continuity that depend on one variable. In the case where i ( i ) are convex upward, we obtain exact error estimates in the following cases: (i) in the integral metric L 2 for (1, ..., n ) = 1(1) + ... + n ( n ); (ii) in the integral metric L p (p 1) for (1, ..., n ) = c 11 + ... + c n n ; (iii) in the integral metric L (2, ..., 2, 2r) (r = 2, 3, ...) for (1, ..., n ) = 1(1) + ... + n – 1( n – 1) + c n n .  相似文献
