A new approach based on the Monte Carlo simulation is used to calculate the infinite matrix dose rate correction factors of gamma, beta and internal conversion radiations for 250 μm diameter grains of quartz and TLD500 chips. Here, the dependence of the correction factor on the radiation energy is initially calculated for each type of emitted particle and with this result the correction factors for the 232Th and 238U series and 40K are determined. This analysis is made for dry soil and also for different levels of water content in it. The obtained beta correction factors for quartz are in good agreement with those previously reported. For the TLD500 chip certain differences with previously reported data are found. The analysis of the gamma water correction factor for quartz based on Zimmerman equation shows the correspondence with the similar correction factor for electrons. In the case of TLD500 chip a gamma water correction factor value of 1.0 was found.  相似文献

The radiation dose delivered by the 90Sr beta source of a TL-OSL reader and the one delivered by a 137Cs gamma source were compared using OSL dating techniques and tools. Three sets of quartz of different origins (rock, sediment and loess) were studied and measured by the SAR protocol (Single aliquot regenerative dose protocol) after irradiations carried out either by the 90Sr source or by a 137Cs source. Measurements show that the values obtained by the SAR protocol must be corrected in order to provide an acceptable cross-calibration of the beta and gamma source. Once applied, measurement sets become self-consistent and compatible with expected values. The consequences of the above mentioned observations on the methodology of OSL dating are discussed and suggest that a mixed protocol be used including both the SAR protocol and an added dose techniques close to the SARA protocol (Single aliquot regenerative and added dose protocol).  相似文献

This paper gives a review of recent developments in luminescence measurement facilities on the Risø TL/OSL reader including radio-luminescence (RL), exo-electron and violet stimulation attachments, and a method for characterising and if necessary correcting for beta irradiation source non-uniformity.We first describe improvements to the existing RL option to allow near infra-red detection (NIR) during irradiation by the built-in 90Sr/90Y beta source. The RL optical signal is collected by a liquid light guide through an F34-901 interference filter and detection is based on a dedicated thermoelectrically cooled NIR sensitive PMT (detection window peak at 855 nm, FWHM 27 nm). Software and electronics have been modified to allow standard TL and OSL measurements in the same sequence as RL measurements. Together with a new bleaching source based on a high-power UV LED (395 nm; 700 mW/cm2), this facility has been used to measure natural doses in feldspar using the decaying NIR RL signal.Secondly, we present a method for mapping radiation field of the built-in 90Sr/90Y β-source and estimating grain-location specific dose-rates. This is important for the accuracy of single grain results, when radiation field is spatially non-uniform across the sample area. We document the effect of this correction method and further investigate on the effect of lifting the source to achieve a better dose-rate uniformity.Finally we summarise two recently-developed novel facilities to help investigate (i) the time scales involved in OSL processes (time-resolved exo-electron detection) and (ii) extending the age range (violet stimulated signals from deep quartz OSL traps).  相似文献

In this study, we applied optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating to two fine grain sediment samples collected at Jeongokri, Korea. A single aliquot regenerative dose (SAR) procedure was applied to both polymineral grains and to chemically isolated (H2SiF6) quartz grains of 4–11 μm diameter. For polymineral fine grains, the OSL IR depletion ratio and the equivalent dose (De) plateau test appear to be equally sensitive indicators of appropriate IR stimulation time for use in the ‘double SAR’ protocol. Additionally, the OSL IR depletion ratio test gives an indication of the relative mineral composition of the samples, hence providing an assessment of the likelihood of obtaining a quartz-dominated [post-IR] OSL signal. Use of higher preheat temperatures would assist in thermally eroding the non-quartz component of the [post-IR] OSL signal from polyminerals. For the quartz fine grains, data from both natural De determinations and laboratory dose recovery tests are required to identify the appropriate preheat temperatures for dating, due to problems of thermal transfer. This phenomenon is particularly exaggerated for these samples due to the large De values (≥350 Gy) and hence low slope of the dose–response curve. The double SAR method cannot be applied ubiquitously, even after careful and rigorous study of one sample from a section. Quartz OSL dating using a range of preheat temperatures is suggested to be the most suitable method for OSL dating of fine grain sediments.  相似文献

Knowledge of the relative luminescence response to alpha and beta radiation is very important in TL and OSL dating. In the present study the relative alpha to beta response is studied in a sedimentary quartz sample, previously fired at 900 °C for 1 h, in the dose region between 1 and 128 Gy, for both thermoluminescence (TL) and linearly modulated optically stimulated luminescence (LM – OSL). The LM – OSL measurements were performed at room temperature and at 125 °C. All OSL signals were deconvolved into their individual components. Comparison of OSL curves after alpha and beta irradiation strongly supports that quartz OSL components follow first order kinetics in both cases. In the case of TL, the relative alpha to beta response is found to be very different for each TL glow-peak, but it does not depend strongly on irradiation dose. In the case of LM – OSL measurements, it is found that the relative behaviour of the alpha to beta response is different for three distinct regions, namely the fast OSL component, the region of medium OSL component originating from the TL glow-peak at 110 °C when stimulation takes place at room temperature and finally the region of slow OSL component. Following stimulation at ambient temperature, the relative alpha to beta response of all components was not observed to depend significantly on dose, with the value of ratio being 0.03 and a tendency to decrease with increasing dose. However, in the case of measurements performed at 125 °C, the relative response of the fast components is much enhanced, and for the remaining components it increases with increasing dose. Special care must be taken to examine the relative alpha to beta response of the fast component at 125 °C which contrasts the relative response of the TL peak at ca. 325 °C. The implications for the dating of annealed quartz are also briefly discussed.  相似文献

Quartz extracted from heated bricks has been previously suggested for use in dose estimation in accident dosimetry, but this technique has never been applied before to Japanese quartz which often has unusual OSL characteristics. In this study the optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) characteristics of quartz extracted from a Japanese commercial red brick produced by Mishima – Renga – Seizoujyo Co. are studied. These companies are based in the Aichi Prefecture (capital Nagoya), which accounts for about half of the red brick production in Japan. A comparison of TL (thermoluminescence) and OSL signals has been carried out towards identification of common source traps. It is observed that OSL from Japanese brick quartz shows unusual luminescence characteristics; in particular, the initial fast decaying OSL signal contains a dominant (>90%) thermally unstable component related to the 85 °C TL peak, which necessitates a prior heat treatment. A single-aliquot regenerative-dose (SAR) protocol is developed and tested using thermal treatments intended to isolate a stable dosimetric signal. A minimum detection limit of ~65 mGy is then estimated using this protocol. Following irradiation using 60Co and 137Cs, dose–depth profiles were measured on two different commercial brick types (Mishima – Renga – Seizoujyo Co. and Hase – Renga Co.) with 5 Gy and 10 Gy surface doses. The profiles derived from the two sources were readily distinguishable. It is concluded that the OSL signals from the two types of Japanese brick quartz examined here can be used to derive precise estimates of accident dose, and, possibly to distinguish between sources of gamma radiation in a nuclear accident.To our knowledge, this is the first report on the existence of an unstable fast decaying OSL signal in quartz derived from bricks, and demonstrates a way forward with such samples in retrospective dosimetry.  相似文献

Measurements were carried out to quantify the dose rate delivered to samples due to leakage and cross-talk of the beta and alpha sources in various models of Risø TL/OSL readers; additionally the offset time was calculated. Highly sensitive -Al2O3:C and CaF2:Mn dosemeters were used to investigate the impact on low environmental dose-rate assessment. The effect is shown to depend on the energy response of the detectors, the source strength and the reader design of the equipment. It was tested, if the scattered radiation of the closed source can be utilised to extend the dose range downwards to lower doses, as the dose rates of the built-in sources of Risø TL/OSL readers often exceed the practical values for ultra-low-dose measurements. The results and their consequences for environmental dose-rate assessment are discussed.  相似文献

The thermodynamic stability of4He4–13 at 3.2 K is investigated with the classical Monte Carlo method, with the semiclassical path-integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) method, and with the semiclassical all-order many-body method. In the all-order many-body simulation the dipole-dipole approximation including short-range correction is used. The resulting stability plots are discussed and related to recent TOF experiments by Stephens and King. It is found that with classical Monte Carlo of course the characteristics of the measured mass spectrum cannot be resolved. With PIMC, switching on more and more quantum mechanics. by raising the number of virtual time steps results in more structure in the stability plot, but this did not lead to sufficient agreement with the TOF experiment. Only the all-order many-body method resolved the characteristic structures of the measured mass spectrum, including magic numbers. The result shows the influence of quantum statistics and quantum mechanics on the stability of small neutral helium clusters.  相似文献

Proton-recoil detectors offer the possibility to unfold fast-neutron energy spectra of various sources. However, quantifying the confidence of the unfolding methodology is a complex task. In this paper, we present a comparative analysis of the maximum-likelihood, expectation-maximization (MLEM) method and one-step-late (OSL) method for neutron energy spectra unfolding. The analysis is performed on Monte Carlo simulated data for several monoenergetic neutron sources and continuous-in-energy 252Cf, 241Am–Be and 241Am–Li neutron sources. The results obtained for the monoenergetic neutron spectra show that both unfolding methods provide results that are in good agreement with the reference data. Very good agreement between the unfolded and the reference data is achieved for 252Cf, 241Am–Be, and 241Am–Li neutron spectra by using the OSL method. In the paper it is demonstrated that the MLEM and OSL methods can be applied to accurately unfold the simulated pulse-height distributions for organic liquid scintillation detectors. Comparative analysis between the two unfolding methods has shown that the OSL method has superior unfolding performance than the MLEM method.  相似文献

Abstract

Thermoluminescence (TL) and Optical Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) of natural quartz crystals from sediments have been studied in order to obtain the ages of the sediments' deposition. The sediments were collected from an archaeological site, located in State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. In the present work the phototransfer TL process was observed in the 394°C TL peak, which increased 10–20% in its intensity when the sample was exposed to sunlight. As the samples did not provide a residual TL, a new methodology to evaluate the paleodose (P) was devised. Annual doses were evaluated based on uranium, thorium and potassium contents determined by neutron activation analysis. Preliminary ages were compared to those obtained by OSL and ages between (11–35) 103 BP were obtained.  相似文献

Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) measurements of quartz are widely used to measure equivalent dose (De). At radiation doses above ~100 Gy, saturation of traps results in a decrease in the rate of growth of the OSL signal, and this makes calculation of De increasingly difficult. A series of dose recovery experiments was undertaken using single grains of quartz from Kalambo Falls, Zambia to explore saturation of single grains. When the OSL signal from many grains is averaged, the characteristic dose (D0) is 47 Gy, typical of published values for quartz. However, D0 for individual grains varies from ~10 to 100 Gy. Doses up to two times the average D0 could be accurately recovered, but above this dose the De became increasingly underestimated. Overdispersion for this type of experiment should be zero, but was observed in all data sets; furthermore the value of overdispersion increased with De. An additional acceptance criterion, the Fast Ratio, is suggested for single grain OSL analysis. This criterion assesses the relative contribution of the fast component of the OSL signal. Including this as an additional acceptance criterion leads to an improved precision, with overdispersion reduced to zero, and improved accuracy in dose recovery at high doses.  相似文献

The spatial variation of dose-rate from a 1850 MBq (50 mCi) 90Sr/90Y Amersham International SIF type ceramic-substrate beta particle source (5 mm diameter active area) was measured and compared with that from a 1480 MBq (40 mCi) 90Sr/90Y Amersham International SIP type silver plaque type beta particle source (12 mm diameter active area), for a variety of source–target spacings. The radiation field intensities were mapped using the intensity of radioluminescence induced in a probe comprising an ≅1 mm diameter calcium fluoride grain attached to the end of a glass fibre optic cable, and detected by a photomultiplier. Both sources were found to have radially symmetric dose distributions with no significant local irregularities, and dose-rate radial profiles indistinguishable at the closest source–probe spacing used (15 mm). At the largest source–probe spacing, 25 mm, the ceramic-substrate source exhibited slightly lower centre-periphery dose-rate decrease.Further measurements, using in addition a 3700 MBq (100 mCi) ceramic-substrate source, found an apparently lower dose-rate/MBq from the ceramic-substrate sources than from the silver plaque. This somewhat negates the practical benefits arising from the increased source activity permissible on radiation safety grounds for ceramic-substrate sources for a given shielding configuration, as although a given shielding configuration can house a ceramic-substrate source delivering a greater dose-rate than can safely be achieved from a silver plaque source, a considerably higher source activity is required to do so.It was concluded that the overall suitability of both types of sources for luminescence applications differs little in that both are suitable, and the choice between types is best governed by case-to-case considerations, such as practical constraints on shielding.  相似文献

The PandaX-III experiment will search for neutrinoless double beta decay of 136Xe with high pressure gaseous time projection chambers at the China Jin-Ping underground Laboratory. The tracking feature of gaseous detectors helps suppress the background level, resulting in the improvement of the detection sensitivity. We study a method based on the convolutional neural networks to discriminate double beta decay signals against the background f r om high energy gammas generated by 214Bi and 208Tl decays based on detailed Monte Carlo simulation. Using the 2-dimensional projections of recorded tracks on two planes, the method successfully suppresses the background level by a factor larger than 100 with a high signal efficiency. An improvement of 62% on the efficiency ratio of \(\in_s/\;\sqrt { \in b} \) is achieved in comparison with the baseline in the PandaX-III conceptual design report.  相似文献

Two experiments were performed to determine the distribution of beta dose in a target medium as a function of distance from a planar source (2π geometry). In Experiment 1 planar absorbers were used to simulate depth in the target medium, and the attenuated dose that penetrated the intervening absorbers was detected using thermoluminescence from CaSO4:Tm. In experiment 2 pellets of powdered tooth enamel were situated in a cavity in solid tooth enamel. Dose response of the electron spin resonance (ESR) signals in the pellets allowed direct detection of dose distribution within the target medium. The dose distributions were found to agree more closely with Monte Carlo calculations and with one-group transport theory (Prestwich et al., 1997 and Brennan et al., 1997) than with approximations used widely in ESR dating applications (Grün, 1986). Although the latter were supported by experiments by Aitken et al. (1985), the results of experiment 1 provided data to suggest that departure from 2π geometry was unacceptably large in the Aitken et al. (1985) configuration. The beta doses obtained by one-group theory in typical target volumes of enamel were 17 to 40% lower than those obtained using the Grün approximation. It was concluded that one-group transport theory provides the best available routine tool for calculations of beta dose attenuation in near-planar target materials (e.g. tooth enamel and shell) irradiated by natural sources, although Monte Carlo methods are better and could eventually be introduced into the ROSY ESR dating program (Brennan et al., 1997). It was also concluded that a revision of previously published ESR ages using one-group transport for beta dosimetry will be needed. For cases where the U concentrations in enamel are generally low (less than a few ppm), previously published ESR ages on tooth enamel are systematically too young by 5–30%.  相似文献

The sensitivity-corrected multiple-aliquot regenerative-dose (MAR) protocol provides a reliable approach for fine-grained quartz optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating. For reliable estimation of the equivalent dose (De), we investigated certain basic experimental parameters in the fine-grained quartz MAR OSL dating of Chinese loess. (1) For suitable bleaching of the natural OSL signal of the regenerative-dose aliquots, the effect of bleaching duration using sunlight, SOL2 and blue LEDs on De was studied, and it is found that the appropriate method is a short-duration SOL2 (e.g. 5 min) or blue LEDs (e.g. 60 s) bleaching. (2) To select the appropriate test dose, the relationship between the test dose and De was investigated based on three samples having De values of approximately 11, 31 and 137 Gy respectively. It is suggested that the test dose for sensitivity correction may be limited to less than approximately 10–20 Gy. (3) Three commonly used fitting modes for quartz OSL growth curve were compared at three regenerative-dose scales. The results indicate that the mode of two saturating exponential functions plus a constant is appropriate and universal. (4) The comparison of De values derived using OSL approach with those obtained using the recuperated OSL (ReOSL) protocol shows that the reliable De estimation in the fine-grained quartz MAR OSL dating of Chinese loess may be limited to less than approximately 300 Gy. (5) The comparison of growth curves for 18 samples from the Weinan, Xifeng and Jingyuan sites shows that it is feasible to construct a standardized growth curve (SGC) for fine-grained quartz OSL signal in the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP).  相似文献

We present the design and optimization of a deep-well GaAs-based quantum cascade laser (QCL) emitting at 6.7 μm, the shortest wavelength in GaAs-based QCLs, using a multivalley Monte Carlo simulation. Simulation results provide direct insights into optimizing the layer sequence design. The optimized structure exhibits sufficient gain for lasing at both 77 and 300 K. The calculated threshold-current densities are 5 kA/cm2 at 77 K and 14 kA/cm2 at 300 K.  相似文献

Previous SAR-OSL dating studies using quartz extracted from Romanian and Serbian loess samples report SAR-OSL dose–response curves on fine grained (4–11 μm) quartz that grow to much higher doses compared to those of coarse-grained (63–90, 90–125, 125–180 μm) quartz. Furthermore, quartz SAR-OSL laboratory dose response curves do not reflect the growth of the OSL signal in nature. A main difference in coarse- and fine-grained quartz dating lies in the alpha irradiation history, but the effect of mixed alpha-beta fields has so far received little attention. In the present study we investigate whether the alpha dose experienced by fine grains over geological cycles of irradiation and bleaching may have an effect on the saturation characteristics of the laboratory dose response. By applying time resolved optically stimulated luminescence we confirm that the OSL signals induced in quartz by alpha and beta radiation follow the same recombination path. We also show that a mixed alpha-beta dose response reproduces the beta dose response only up to about 800 Gy. Assuming an a-value of 0.04 we have shown that laboratory alpha and beta dose response curves overlap up to effective alpha doses of ∼50 Gy. Based on these results, we conclude that exposure of fine grains to alpha radiation during burial and transport cycles prior to deposition, as well exposure to the mixed radiation field experienced during burial are not responsible for the age discrepancies previously reported on fine and coarse grained quartz extracted from Romanian and Serbian loess.  相似文献

The Monte Carlo model for the photon-beam output from the Varian Clinac 2100 linear accelerator was validated to compare the calculated to measured PDD and beam dose profiles The Monte Carlo calculation method is considered to be the most accurate method for dose calculation in radiotherapy. The objective of this study is to build a Monte Carlo geometry of Varian Clinac 2100 linear accelerator as realistically as possible. The Monte Carlo codes used in this work were the BEAMnrc code to simulate the photons beam and the DOSXYZnrc code to examinate the absorbed dose in the water phantom. We have calculated percentage depth dose (PDD) and beam profiles of the 6 MV photon beam for the 6 × 6 cm2, 10 × 10 cm2 and 15 × 15 cm2 field sizes. We have used the gamma index technique for the quantitative evaluation to compare the measured and calculated distributions. Good agreement was found between calculated PDD and beam profile compared to measured data. The comparison was evaluated using the gamma index method and the criterions were 3% for dose difference and 3 mm for distance to agreement. The gamma index acceptance rate was more than 97% of both distribution comparisons PDDs and dose profiles and our results were more developed and accurate. The Varian Clinac 2100 linear accelerator was accurately modeled using Monte Carlo codes: BEAMnrc and DOSXYZnrc codes package.  相似文献

This paper describes a simulation of the Hall effect in GaAs using a single particle Monte Carlo method. The Pauli exclusion principle and Fermi-Dirac statistics are included in the simulation so that the calculations are extended to the case of transport in degenerate materials with electron concentrations up to 1019 cm−3. Hall mobility and drift mobility for electrons in the low-field ohmic transport regime are calculated from the Monte Carlo results and compared with available typical experimental data. These results demonstrate the importance of including electron-electron interactions in Monte Carlo simulations for GaAs with carrier concentrations above 1017 cm−3. They also suggest the need for an evaluation of current models for ionized impurity scattering applied to degenerate materials and an examination of the role of energy band structure details in Monte Carlos simulations in degenerate materials.  相似文献
