A polyimide membrane, 6FDA–TMPD, was prepared from 5,5′-[2,2,2-trifluoro-1-(trifluoromethyl)ethylidene]bis-1,3-isobenzofurandione (6FDA), and 2,4,6-trimethyl-1,3-phenylenediamine (TMPD). The effect of ultraviolet irradiation (UV irradiation) using a high-pressure mercury lamp on the gas transport properties of the 6FDA–TMPD membrane and membranes containing a photosensitizer was explored. Comparison between UV treatment and thermal treatment was also examined. The gas selectivities in all membranes were increased due to the irradiation. Especially in the H2/N2 and H2/CH4 separations, the selectivities effectively increased without a significant reduction in the H2 permeability. These increases were considerable in the membrane having no photosensitizer which was expected to be an initiator for the cross-linking reaction. There was little effect of cross-linking, which was formed by the irradiation, on the gas permeation properties. Photosensitizers prevented drastic change in the membrane morphologies due to the irradiation.  相似文献

Permeabilities and diffusion coefficients of various gases, Ar, N2, O2, CO2, CH4, C2H4, C3H8 and C4H10, were measured for Water-swollen gel cellophane membranes. No dependence of permeabilities on gas pressure below 1 atm was found. It was observed that the permeability coefficients were not related linearly to the coefficients in bulk water. For the two states of water in the membrane, an analytical method is presented to estimate the diffusion coefficients and the solubilities in free water and non-freezing water. It was found that the diffusion coefficients in non-freezing water were lower than those in free water, and the solubilities in non-freezing water were higher than in free water for all gases studied except CO2 and C2H4, which gave reverse results.  相似文献

The effect of polyethyleneglycol (PEG) on gas permeabilities and selectivities was investigated in a series of miscible cellulose acetate (CA) blend membranes. The permeabilities of CO2, H2, O2, CH4, N2 were measured at temperatures from 30 to 80°C and pressures from 20 to 76 cmHg using a manometric permeation apparatus. It was determined that the blend membrane having 10 wt% PEG20000 exhibited higher permeability for CO2 and higher permselectivity for CO2 over N2 and CH4 than those of the membranes which contained 10% PEG of the molecular weight in the range 200–6000. The CA blend containing 60 wt% PEG20000 showed that its permeability coefficients of CO2 and ideal separation factors for CO2 over N2 reached above 2 × 10−8 [cm3 (STP) cm/cm2 s cmHg] and 22, respectively, at 70°C and 20 cmHg. Based on the data of gas permeability coefficients, time lags and characterization of the membranes, it is proposed that the apparent solubility coefficients of all CA and PEG blend membranes for CO2 were lower than those of the CA membrane. However, almost all the blend membranes containing PEG20000 showed higher apparent diffusivity coefficients for CO2, resulting in higher permeability coefficients of CO2 with relation to those of the CA membrane. It is attributed to the high diffusivity selectivities of CA and PEG20000 blend membranes that their ideal separation factors for CO2 over N2 were higher than those of the CA membrane in the range 50–80°C, even though the ideal separation factors of almost all PEG blend membranes for CO2 over CH4 became lower than those of the CA membrane over nearly the full range from 30° to 80°C.  相似文献

This work reports on the preparation and properties of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)/low‐density polyethylene (LDPE) multilayer composite polymer membranes (MCPM) for gas separation applications. The membranes were produced by combining sequential coating with melt‐extrusion/salt leaching techniques. In particular, the gas sorption and permeation properties at different pressure (40–90 psig) and temperature (27–55 °C) are reported with morphology and thermogravimetric properties. The results show that a 20 μm PDMS layer was able to penetrate the microporous LDPE surface layer substrate leading to improved interfacial adhesion. Based on the different gases (CO2, CH4, and C3H8) solubility, permeability, and diffusivity obtained, these membranes are seen as good candidates for industrial gas separations. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We have determined the intrinsic gas transport properties of He, H2, O2, N2, CH4, and CO2 for a 6FDA-durene polyimide as a function of pressure, temperature and aging time. The permeability coefficients of O2, N2, CH4, and CO2 decrease slightly with increasing pressure. The pressure-dependent diffusion coefficients and solubility coefficients are consistent with the dual-sorption model and partial immobilization. All the gas permeabilities increase with temperature and their apparent activation energies for permeation increase with increasing gas molecular sizes in the order of CO2, O2, N2, and CH4.The percentages of permeability decay after 280 days of aging are 22, 32, 36, 40, 42, and 30% for He, H2, O2, N2, CH4, and CO2, respectively. Interestingly, except for H2 (kinetic diameter of 2.89 Å), the percentages of permeability decay increase exactly in the order of He (kinetic diameter of 2.6 Å), CO2 (3.30 Å), O2 (3.46 Å), N2 (3.64 Å), and CH4 (3.80 Å). The apparent activation energies of permeation for O2, N2, CH4, and CO2 increase with aging because of the increases in activation energies of diffusion and the decreases in solubility coefficients. The activation-energy increase for diffusion is probably due to the decrease in polymeric molar volume because of densification during aging. The reduction in solubility coefficient indicates the available sites for sorption decreasing with aging because of the reduction of microvoids and interstitial chain space.  相似文献

Poly(4-methyl-2-pentyne) (PMP) has been crosslinked using 4,4′-(hexafluoroisopropylidene) diphenyl azide (HFBAA) to improve its chemical and physical stability over time. Crosslinking PMP renders it insoluble in good solvents for the uncrosslinked polymer. Gas permeability and fractional free volume (FFV) decreased as crosslinker content increased, while gas sorption was unaffected by crosslinking. Therefore, the reduction in permeability upon crosslinking PMP was due to decrease in diffusion coefficient. Compared to the pure PMP membrane, the permeability of the crosslinked membrane is initially reduced for all gases tested due to the crosslinking. By adding nanoparticles (FS, TiO2), the permeability is again increased; permeability reductions due to crosslinking could be offset by adding nanoparticles to the membranes. Increased selectivity is documented for the gas pairs O2/N2, H2/N2, CO2/N2, CO2/CH4 and H2/CH4 using crosslinking and addition of nanoparticles. Crosslinking is successful in maintaining the permeability and selectivity of PMP membranes and PMP/filler nanocomposites over time.  相似文献

A series of polyimides with alicyclic and fluorinated moieties previously synthesized were studied for gas separation applications. The solubility behavior of polyimides in various solvents was analyzed through the solubility parameter approach. Permeability coefficients and ideal selectivities were determined for common gases, that is, He, H2, O2, and N2. Polyimide permeabilities were correlated to an improvement of the soluble character and were increased by the introduction of both alicyclic and fluorinated structures. The effect of the casting solvent on gas separation properties was also pointed out. It was found that it is enhanced with increasing diameters for the gas molecules. Finally, some correlations between permeability coefficients and microstructural parameters were discussed. The probability of correlation appears to be also dependent on the diameter and on the polarizability of the gas molecule. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Transport rates (permeability) and ideal separation factors for several gas pairs through dense polyaniline membranes are reported. The ideal separation factors for all gas pairs tested were found to be independent of the polyaniline membrane thickness whereas the permeability of the single gases showed significant variations. Both dedoped and redoped films (film thickness between 9 and 67 μm) were studied. The highest selectivities α(A/B) found were 7.6 for the gas pair H2/CO2 in the case of the dedoped membrane and 10 for the gas pair H2/CO2, 6 for O2/N2 and 200 for H2/N2 in the case of the redoped membrane. Statistical analysis of a large number of membranes allowed the critical comparison with results obtained by other groups.Comparison with other membrane materials shows that an approximately sixfold enhancement of the respective separation factors is possible for gas pairs containing hydrogen. Similar separation factors are observed for the gas pairs CO2/O2, CO2/N2 and N2/O2.Membranes for which Knudsen diffusion was observed exhibited regularly distributed micropores (400 nm diameter).  相似文献

This study investigated the gas separation membranes made with gelatin, crosslinked with ferulic acid (FA) and blended with polyethylene glycol (PEG) 200, by using a solvent‐free procedure. Gas permeation properties (He, N2, O2, and CO2) of these “green membranes” were studied and discussed in relation with their structure. Differential scanning calorimetric measurements were carried out to determine the gelatin triple helical renaturation level. The lowest permeability values [He and CO2 permeability (4.5 × 10?2 Barrer) with CO2/O2 selectivity of 14.5] were reached with gelatin/PEG 200 uncrosslinked membranes showing the highest renaturation level (40%). Crosslinking with FA lead to less rigid and brittle materials than GTA and to 10 times more permeable membranes compared with uncrosslinked membranes. Membranes crosslinked with glutaraldehyde broke during gas permeation measurements. Results demonstrated that higher gas permeability values were closely related to lower renaturation level of gelatin. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. This work presents an attempt at correlating the available permeability/selectivity literature data for hollow fibers and flat membranes. Therefore, this paper gathers the information pertaining to membrane materials for which membrane properties of flat membranes and hollow fibers have both been reported. An overview of the relations between selectivity and permeance of hollow fiber membranes for various gas pairs (O2/N2, CO2/CH4, CO2/N2, H2/N2, H2/CO2, H2/CH4 and He/N2) is presented first. The upper bound lines are the ones proposed by Robeson, which were calculated by assuming a one-micron-thick skin layer as proposed by Robeson in 2008. From the results obtained, a relation between the selectivity ratio in both kinds of membranes (αHf) and skin layer thickness (l) calculated from flat membranes and hollow fibers gas permeation data for these pairs of gases is also presented. The skin layer thicknesses measured using seven different experimental techniques for six commercial membranes are compared. The influences of spinning parameters on the morphology and performance of hollow fiber membrane gas separation are discussed. Finally, an analysis is made of the reasons why the dense skin layer thicknesses of a hollow fiber calculated using permeance and permeability data vary for different gases and also differ from direct experimental measurements.  相似文献

Based on regular star-shaped PSs differing in the structure of the branching center (one or two covalently bound fullerene C60 molecules) and in the number of branchings (6 and 12), homogeneous gas-separation membranes have been produced. The transport behavior of the membranes with respect to several gases, such as H2, He2, N2, CO, CO2, and CH4, has been studied by mass spectrometry. It has been found that the membranes prepared from six-arm PSs are characterized by a smaller density of macromolecular packing than the membranes obtained from 12-arm PCs and, consequently, they possess higher gas permeability. The starshaped PSs demonstrate a higher selectivity factor for separation of the O2/N2 gas pair compared to the corresponding characteristics of the linear PSs. The analysis of gas-separation characteristics by means of the Reitlinger-Robeson diagrams demonstrates that the transport behavior of star-shaped PSs qualitatively surpasses similar parameters of the known polymers in the separation of the CO/N2 gas pair.  相似文献

Ethylcellulose (EC) or linear polyimide (LPI) and magnetic neodymium powder particles MQP-14-12 were used for the preparation of inorganic-organic hybrid membranes. For all the membranes, N2, O2 and air permeability were examined. Mass transport coefficients were determined using the Time Lag System based on dynamic experiments in a constant pressure system. The results showed that the membrane permeation properties were improved by the addition of magnetic neodymium particles to the polymer matrix. The magnetic ethylcellulose and polyimide membranes exhibited higher gas permeability and diffusivity, while their permeability selectivity and solubility were either unchanged or slightly increased. Polyimide mixed matrix membranes were characterised by a higher thermal and mechanical stability, larger filler loading, better magnetic properties and reasonable selectivity in the air separation.  相似文献

The novel cross-linker, poly(propylene glycol) block poly(ethylene glycol) block poly(propylene glycol) diamine (PPG/PEG/PPGDA), was employed to chemically cross-link Matrimid 5218 at room temperature. The cross-linking reaction process was monitored by FTIR. The XRD was used to indicate the changing of the polymer structure by cross-linking reaction. The effects of the cross-linking reaction on mechanical performance, gel content and H2, CO2, N2 and CH4 gas transport properties of the cross-linked Matrimid membranes were investigated. The cross-linked Matrimid membranes display excellent CO2 permeability and CO2/light gas selectivity compared with the uncross-linked Matrimid membrane. Finally, the potential application of the cross-linked Matrimid membranes for CO2/light gas separation was explored.  相似文献

Recently, high-free volume, glassy ladder-type polymers, referred to as polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIM), have been developed and their reported gas transport performance exceeded the Robeson upper bound trade-off for O2/N2 and CO2/CH4. The present work reports the gas transport behavior of PIM-1/silica nanocomposite membranes. The changes in free volume, as well as the presence and volume of the void cavities, were investigated by analyzing the density, thermal stability, and nano-structural morphology. The enhancement in gas permeability (e.g., He, H2, O2, N2, and CO2) with increasing filler content shows that the trend is related to the true silica volume and void volume fraction.  相似文献

Using multilayer composite hollow fiber membranes consisting of a sealing layer (silicone rubber), a selective layer (poly(4-vinylpyridine)), and a support substrate (polysulfone), we have determined the key parameters for fabricating high-performance multilayer hollow fiber composite membranes for gas separation. Surface roughness and surface porosity of the support substrate play two crucial roles in successful membrane fabrication. Substrates with smooth surfaces tend to reduce defects in the selective layer to yield composite membranes of better separation performance. Substrates with a high surface porosity can enhance the permeance of composite membranes. However, SEM micrographs show that, when preparing an asymmetric microporous membrane substrate using a phase-inversion process, the higher the surface porosity, the greater the surface roughness. How to optimize and compromise the effect of both factors with respect to permselectivity is a critical issue for the selection of support substrates to fabricate high-performance multilayer composite membranes. For a highly permeable support substrate, pre-wetting shows no significant improvement in membrane performance. Composite hollow fiber membranes made from a composition of silicone rubber/0.1–0.5 wt% poly(4-vinylpyridine)/25 wt% polysulfone show impressive separation performance. Gas permeances of around 100 GPU for H2, 40 GPU for CO2, and 8 GPU for O2 with selectivities of around 100 for H2/N2, 50 for CO2/CH4, and 7 for O2/N2 were obtained.  相似文献

Two new bridged alkoxysilanes, bis(triethoxysilylalkyl)‐N,N′‐oxalylureas (alkyl = methyl or n‐propyl), bearing a highly rigid and polar oxalylurea unit in the bridges, were employed as precursors of bridged silica membranes. The gas and water separation performance of the membranes prepared from the precursors using the sol–gel process was investigated. Interestingly, the membrane properties depended on the alkyl chain length. The membrane containing methylene units (alkyl = methyl) was porous and rather hydrophilic but the other with longer propylene units (alkyl = n‐propyl) was non‐porous and more hydrophobic. High H2/SF6 gas permeance ratios of 3100 and 1700, and NaCl rejections of 89 and 85% for 2000 ppm aqueous NaCl were obtained using the membranes containing methyl and n‐propyl, respectively. The membrane with alkyl = methyl also showed a high CO2/N2 permeance ratio of 20.6 at 50°C. These results indicate the potential applications of the membranes as gas and water separation materials. Permeability and diffusion coefficients of O2, He, CO2 and C4H6 were measured in water, swollen poly(vinylalcohol-co-itaconic acid) membranes having various water contents from 0.48 to 0.83. The permeability coefficients of CO2 and C4H6 were found to depend on the upstream pressure, while the permeability coefficients of O2 and He were independent of the pressure. With decreasing pressure the permeability coefficients of CO2 and C4H6 increased, and the pressure dependence became larger with decreasing water content of the membranes. A parallel permeation model based on the two states of water in the water-swollen membranes could be applied successfully to CO2 and C4H6.  相似文献

The concept of mixed matrix membrane comprising dispersed inorganic fillers into a polymer media has revealed appealing to tune the gas separation performance. In this work, the membranes were prepared by incorporation of mesoporous silica into polyurethane (PU). Mesoporous silica particles with different pore size and structures, MCM‐41, cubic MCM‐48 and SBA‐16, were synthesized by templating method and functionalized with 3‐aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES). High porosity and aminated surface of the mesoporous silica enhance the adhesion of the particles to the PU matrix. The SEM and FTIR results showed strong interactions between the particles and the PU chains. Moreover, the thermal stability of the hybrid PUs improved compared to the pure polymer. Gas transport properties of the membranes were measured for pure CO2, CH4, O2, and N2 gases at 10 bar and 25°C. The results showed that the gas permeabilities enhanced with increasing in the loading of modified mesoporous silica particles. High porosity and amine‐functionalized particles render opportunities to enhance the gas diffusivity and solubility through the membranes. The enhanced gas transport properties of the mixed matrix membranes reveal the advantages of mesoporous silica to improve the gas permeability (CO2 permeability up to ~70) without scarifying the gas selectivity (α(CO2/N2)~ 30 for 5 wt% SBA‐16 content).  相似文献

Ion beam irradiation has been widely used to modify the structure and properties of membrane surface layers. In this study, the gas permeability and selectivity of an asymmetric polyimide membrane modified by He ion irradiation were investigated using a high vacuum apparatus equipped with a Baratron absolute pressure gauge at 76 cmHg and 35 °C. Specifically, we estimated the effects of the gas diffusion and solubility on the gas permeation properties of the asymmetric membranes with the carbonized skin layer prepared by ion irradiation. The asymmetric polyimide membranes were prepared by a dry–wet phase inversion process, and the surface skin layer on the membrane was irradiated by He ions at fluences of 1 × 1015 to 5 × 1015 ions/cm2 at 50 keV. The increase in the gas permeability of the He+‐irradiated asymmetric polyimide membrane is entirely due to an increase in the gas diffusion, and the gas selectivity increases of the membranes were responsible for the high gas diffusion selectivities. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Physical and gas transport properties of novel hyperbranched polyimide–silica hybrid membranes were investigated and compared with those of linear‐type polyimide–silica hybrid membranes with similar chemical structures. Hyperbranched polyamic acid, as a precursor, was prepared by polycondensation of a triamine, 1,3,5‐tris(4‐aminophenoxy)benzene (TAPOB), and a dianhydride, 4,4′‐(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride (6FDA). 6FDA‐TAPOB hyperbranched polyimide–silica hybrids were prepared using the polyamic acid, water, and tetramethoxysilane (TMOS) by sol–gel reaction. 5% weight‐loss temperature of the 6FDA‐TAPOB hyperbranched polyimide–silica hybrids determined by TG‐DTA measurement considerably increased with increasing silica content, indicating effective crosslinking at polymer–silica interface. CO2, O2, N2, and CH4 permeability coefficients of the 6FDA‐based polyimide–silica hybrids increased with increasing silica content. In addition, CO2/CH4 selectivity of the 6FDA‐TAPOB–silica hybrids remarkably increased with increasing silica content. From 129Xe NMR analysis, characteristic distribution and interconnectivity of cavities created around polymer–silica interface were suggested in the 6FDA‐TAPOB–silica hybrids. It was indicated that size‐selective separation ability is effectively brought by the incorporation of silica for the 6FDA‐TAPOB hyperbranched polyimide–silica hybrid membranes. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
