We study the nonlinear phase response of a microring resonator coupled to a bus waveguide and the use of this nonlinear phase shift to store information in the microring resonator and enhance the switching characteristics of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI). By introducing coupling between adjacent microring resonators, the switching characteristics of the MZI can be exponentially enhanced as a function of the number of microring resonators, when compared to the linear enhancement for uncoupled resonators. With only a few moderate-finesse microring resonators, the switching power can be reduced to attowatt level, allowing for photonic switching devices that operate at single-photon level in ordinary optical waveguides.   相似文献

We measured the transmission and group delay of microring coupled-resonator optical waveguides (CROWs). The CROWs consisted of 12 weakly coupled, microring resonators fabricated in optical polymers (PMMA on Cytop). The intrinsic quality factor of the resonators was 18,000 and the interresonator coupling was 1%, resulting in a delay of 110-140 ps and a slowing factor of 23-29 over a 17 GHz bandwidth.  相似文献

环形谐振器因体积小、功能强、结构简洁等优点长期以来一直在光无源、有源器件的设计和制作中发挥着重要的作用。对光纤的弯曲损耗特性进行了深入分析,指出只有采用微细光纤才能降低全光纤法所制作的环形谐振器的尺寸,加宽器件的自由光谱范围(FSR)获得更好的精细度和品质因子。然后,在改进熔融拉锥技术的同时,保持慢变、绝热条件拉制出在80 mm长度范围内具有良好均匀性、半径为5μm的高质量微细光纤,在此基础上采用自缠绕法研制出半径仅为500μm,谐振效果明显加强的全光纤型微环谐振器,从而很好地解决了集成型微环谐振器较高的弯曲损耗和连接损耗问题。  相似文献

总结并展望了硅基混合表面等离子体纳米光波导及集成器件方面的理论和实验研究工作。首先介绍了几种硅基混合表面等离子体纳米光波导结构,其尺寸可小至100 nm以下,而传播长度达100μm量级;其次介绍了基于硅基混合表面等离子体纳米光波导的功分器、偏振分束器和谐振器等集成器件,其尺寸为亚微米量级;最后探讨了硅基混合表面等离子体纳米光波导与硅纳米线光波导的耦合及对其进行增益补偿。  相似文献

微环谐振器可用作未来高密度、超大规模集成光路的基本构件,其重要发展方向之一是多环化、阵列化,微环谐振器阵列近来成为研究的热点。基于定向耦合器、环形谐振腔、直波导腔的基本单元传输矩阵,建立了用于分析微环谐振器阵列传输特性的传输矩阵模型。讨论了列间距对传输特性的影响,并数值模拟了不同尺度的奇数行和偶数行情况下谐振器阵列的传输特性。结合此传输矩阵模型,讨论了通过改变微环谐振器阵列的尺度以及耦合系数以实现滤波特性改善的方案。最后数值研究了最小尺度微环谐振器阵列传输特性与腔间耦合系数的关系。  相似文献

Optical resonators are important devices that control the properties of light and manipulate light–matter interaction. Various optical resonators are designed and fabricated using different techniques. For example, in coupled resonator optical waveguides, light energy is transported to other resonators through near‐field coupling. In recent years, magnetic optical resonators based on LC resonance have been realized in several metallic microstructures. Such devices possess stronger local resonance and lower radiation loss compared with electric optical resonators. This study provides an overall introduction on the latest progress in coupled magnetic resonator optical waveguide (CMROW). Various waveguides composed of different magnetic resonators are presented and Lagrangian formalism is used to describe the CMROW. Moreover, several interesting properties of CMROWs, such as abnormal dispersions and slow‐light effects, are discussed and CMROW applications in nonlinear and quantum optics are shown. Future novel nanophotonic devices can be developed using CMROWs.  相似文献

In this paper, slotted microcavity ring resonators based optical storage devices are proposed and analyzed by means of multiresolution time domain technique. The effect of the structure geometrical parameters on the coupling efficiency, normalized transmission spectra and quality factor has been thoroughly investigated and compared to that of the conventional no-slot microring resonator. The suggested slotted configurations increase the quality factor at a fixed gap size between the central ring and input/output waveguides. In addition, the desired compromise between the coupling efficiency and resonance effect inside the ring can be achieved by mere optimization of the slot geometrical characteristics.  相似文献

In experiment, characteristics of silicon microring/racetrack resonators in submicron rib waveguides have been systematically investigated. It is demonstrated that only a transverse-electric mode is guided for a ratio of slab height to rib height h/H = 0.5. Thus, these microring/racetrack resonators can only function for quasi-transverse-electric mode, while they get rid of transverse-magnetic polarization. Electron beam lithography and inductively coupled plasma etching were employed and improved to reduce sidewall roughness for low propagation loss and high performance resonators. Then, the effects of waveguide dimensions, coupling region design, waveguide roughness, and oxide cladding for the resonators have been considered and analyzed.  相似文献

A general method based on the predistortion technique is presented for determining the optimum coupling parameters of multiple-coupled microring filters in the presence of known uniform resonator loss. The technique involves predistorting the filter transfer function by shifting its poles and zeros to compensate for loss in the microring resonators due to material absorption, surface roughness scattering, coupling loss and bending loss. It is shown that by sacrificing some in-band insertion loss, both the amplitude and group delay responses of the filter can be recovered when loss is present. Application of the method to synthesizing lossy microring filters in both the digital z-domain and analog s-domain will be presented. The proposed technique is general in that it can be applied to both amplitude and phase filters constructed of coupled microresonators in the most general two-dimensional coupling topology.  相似文献

A circular array consisting of an odd number of microring resonators is a dual-mode reflection filter. Based on the photonic energy band of a coupled microring resonator string and the resonant condition of the circular array, reflection characteristics of the circular array filter are discussed in detail. The parameters that influence the reflection characteristics and their effect mechanisms are demonstrated. The critical coupling phenomenon and its condition are revealed. We also show that the existence of loss in the rings can suppress split peaks and subsequently flatten the reflection spectrum to the whole pass band. Our work illuminates the application potential of a circular array of an odd number of microring resonators as an integrated photonics reflection filter.  相似文献

We have constructed and characterized several optical microring resonators with scale sizes of the order of 10 microm. These devices are intended to serve as building blocks for engineerable linear and nonlinear photonic media. Light is guided vertically by an epitaxially grown structure and transversely by deeply etched air-clad sidewalls. We report on the spectral phase transfer characteristics of such resonators. We also report the observation of a pi-rad Kerr nonlinear phase shift accumulated in a single compact ring resonator evidenced by all-optical switching between output ports of a resonator-enhanced Mach-Zehnder interferometer.  相似文献

The high degree of intensity values in microring resonators needs a careful treatment of nonlinear phenomena. Nonlinear effects are analyzed in coupling problem of ring-ring directional couplers. We propose a new type of optical resonator that consists of embedded ring resonators (ERRs). The resonators exhibit unique amplitude and phase characteristics and allow designing compact filters, modulators, and delay elements. A basic configuration of the ERRs with two rings coupled in a point-to-point manner is discussed under two operating conditions. An ERR-based microring modulator shows a high operation speed up to 30 GHz. ERRs with distributed coupling are briefly described as well.  相似文献

实验观测到了微环对入射二进制码的格式转换作用, 且这种转换作用对入射光波长具有强烈的依赖关系. 使用线性耦合模理论, 结合傅里叶变换以及电光马赫曾德强度调制作用, 理论再现了这一实验结果, 并通过使用简化的传递函数对此进行了解释. 理论分析还表明, 对于非临界耦合微环, 通过格式转换后波形的非对称性可以直观地判断微环的耦合状态, 即过耦合或欠耦合有不同的输出波形特点. 关键词: 微环谐振器 数据格式转换 耦合模方程 传递函数  相似文献

We propose and demonstrate a directed optical decoder that can perform the decoding function from a two-bit electrical signal to a four-bit optical signal based on two cascaded microring resonators. We use two electrical signals regarded as a two-bit electrical signal to modulate the two microring resonators through the thermo-optic effect and four optical signals regarded as a four-bit optical signal appear at the output ports, respectively. The device operating at 10?kbps is demonstrated.  相似文献

As the complexity of microphotonic devices grows, the ability to precisely trim microring resonators becomes increasingly important. Photo-oxidation trimming uses UV irradiation to oxidize a cladding layer composed of polymerized hexamethyldisilane (6M2S) deposited with plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD). PECVD 6M2S has optical properties that are compatible with microring devices, and its high cross linking renders it insoluble. Photo-oxidation decreases the refractive index of PECVD 6M2S by nearly 4%, permitting large resonance shifts that are not feasible with thermal trimming techniques. Resonance shifts from single-mode, 100 microm diameter Si3N4 (n =2.2) rings were as large as 12.8 nm for the TE mode and 23.5 nm for the TM mode.  相似文献

This paper derives the dispersion relation of microring coupled-resonator optical waveguides (CROWs) without any approximation by using the transfer matrix method. Based on the established dispersion relation of CROWs it obtains the slow group velocity and dispersion coefficient. It finds that the effect of dispersion on optical pulses can be adjusted to balance the effect of nonlinearity by changing coupling coefficient or loss, so optical soliton with group delay can be obtained in microring CROWs. The optical soliton with group delay is of great significance for applications of microring CROWs in delay lines and optical buffers of future all-optical communication systems.  相似文献

With recent advances in silicon nanophotonics, optical crossbars based on CMOS-compatible microring resonators have emerged as viable on-chip optical interconnection networks to deliver high-bandwidth communication at low power dissipation with a small footprint. This paper describes the design, fabrication and evaluation of an arbitration-free passive crossbar based on a microring resonator matrix that can be used to route wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) signals across the chip. The salient feature of the proposed design is the ability to support multicasting and many-to-one communication efficiently (without arbitration), which makes it suitable for implementing cache coherency protocols and on-chip interconnect in future many-core processors.  相似文献

We propose an interesting result on fast and slow light generation using nonlinear microring resonators. When a soliton pulse is generated within the first ring resonator, the specific signals can be generated using the chaotic filter characteristics of light pulses travelling within the microring devices. We have demonstrated that two different frequency bands can be generated and they are suitable for use in optical wireless links. The other application of fast and slow lights is also presented, whereas signal security can be formed using the add/drop device to retrieve the original signal from the chaotic noisy signals. The key advantage is that the original signal can be kept in secret without any tapping due to the problem of fast light pulses and noisy signals, which are difficult to intercept.  相似文献
