We consider here the distributions of order statistics and linear combinations of order statistics from an elliptical distribution. We show that these distributions can be expressed as mixtures of unified skew-elliptical distributions, and then use these mixture representations to derive their moment generating functions and moments, when they exist.  相似文献

This paper studies the exact distributions of the MLEs of the regression coefficient matrices in a GMANOVA-MANOVA model with normal error. The unique conditions for linear functions of the MLEs of regression coefficient matrices are presented, and the exact density functions or characteristic functions for these linear functions are derived.  相似文献

In this paper we show how, based on a decomposition of the likelihood ratio test for sphericity into two independent tests and a suitably developed decomposition of the characteristic function of the logarithm of the likelihood ratio test statistic to test independence in a set of variates, we may obtain extremely well-fitting near-exact distributions for both test statistics. Since both test statistics have the distribution of the product of independent Beta random variables, it is possible to obtain near-exact distributions for both statistics in the form of Generalized Near-Integer Gamma distributions or mixtures of these distributions. For the independence test statistic, numerical studies and comparisons with asymptotic distributions proposed by other authors show the extremely high accuracy of the near-exact distributions developed as approximations to the exact distribution. Concerning the sphericity test statistic, comparisons with formerly developed near-exact distributions show the advantages of these new near-exact distributions.  相似文献

The theory of elliptically contoured distributions is presented in an unrestricted setting, with no moment restrictions or assumptions of absolute continuity. These distributions are defined parametrically through their characteristic functions and then studied primarily through the use of stochastic representations which naturally follow from the work of Schoenberg [5] on spherically symmetric distributions. It is shown that the conditional distributions of elliptically contoured distributions are elliptically contoured, and the conditional distributions are precisely identified. In addition, a number of the properties of normal distributions (which constitute a type of elliptically contoured distributions) are shown, in fact, to characterize normality.  相似文献

Let (X1,X2,…,Xn) and (Y1,Y2,…,Yn) be gamma random vectors with common shape parameter α(0<α?1) and scale parameters (λ1,λ2,…,λn), (μ1,μ2,…,μn), respectively. Let X()=(X(1),X(2),…,X(n)), Y()=(Y(1),Y(2),…,Y(n)) be the order statistics of (X1,X2,…,Xn) and (Y1,Y2,…,Yn). Then (λ1,λ2,…,λn) majorizes (μ1,μ2,…,μn) implies that X() is stochastically larger than Y(). However if the common shape parameter α>1, we can only compare the the first- and last-order statistics. Some earlier results on stochastically comparing proportional hazard functions are shown to be special cases of our results.  相似文献

Most work on conditionally specified distributions has focused on approaches that operate on the probability space, and the constraints on the probability space often make the study of their properties challenging. We propose decomposing both the joint and conditional discrete distributions into characterizing sets of canonical interactions, and we prove that certain interactions of a joint distribution are shared with its conditional distributions. This invariance opens the door for checking the compatibility between conditional distributions involving the same set of variables. We formulate necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence and uniqueness of discrete conditional models, and we show how a joint distribution can be easily computed from the pool of interactions collected from the conditional distributions. Hence, the methods can be used to calculate the exact distribution of a Gibbs sampler. Furthermore, issues such as how near compatibility can be reconciled are also discussed. Using mixed parametrization, we show that the proposed approach is based on the canonical parameters, while the conventional approaches are based on the mean parameters. Our advantage is partly due to the invariance that holds only for the canonical parameters.  相似文献

We consider the class of multivariate distributions that gives the distribution of the sum of uncorrelated random variables by the product of their marginal distributions. This class is defined by a representation of the assumption of sub-independence, formulated previously in terms of the characteristic function and convolution, as a weaker assumption than independence for derivation of the distribution of the sum of random variables. The new representation is in terms of stochastic equivalence and the class of distributions is referred to as the summable uncorrelated marginals (SUM) distributions. The SUM distributions can be used as models for the joint distribution of uncorrelated random variables, irrespective of the strength of dependence between them. We provide a method for the construction of bivariate SUM distributions through linking any pair of identical symmetric probability density functions. We also give a formula for measuring the strength of dependence of the SUM models. A final result shows that under the condition of positive or negative orthant dependence, the SUM property implies independence.  相似文献

We introduce a class of absolutely continuous bivariate exponential distributions, generated from quadratic forms of standard multivariate normal variates. This class is quite flexible and tractable, since it is regulated by two parameters only, derived from the matrices of the quadratic forms: the correlation and the correlation of the squares of marginal components. A simple representation of the whole class is given in terms of 4-dimensional matrices. Integral forms allow evaluating the distribution function and the density function in most of the cases. The class is introduced as a subclass of bivariate distributions with chi-square marginals; bounds for the dimension of the generating normal variable are underlined in the general case. Finally, we sketch the extension to the multivariate case.  相似文献

Summary The existence of attractive cycles constitutes a serious impediment to the solution of nonlinear equations by iterative methods. This problem is illustrated in the case of the solution of the equationz tanz=c, for complex values ofc, by Newton's method. Relevant results from the theory of the iteration of rational functions are cited and extended to the analysis of this case, in which a meromorphic function is iterated. Extensive numerical results, including many attractive cycles, are summarized. This work was supported in part by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada under grants A3028 and A7691  相似文献

Summary The Schröder and König iteration schemes to find the zeros of a (polynomial) functiong(z) represent generalizations of Newton's method. In both schemes, iteration functionsf m (z) are constructed so that sequencesz n+1 =f m (z n ) converge locally to a rootz * ofg(z) asO(|z n z *|m). It is well known that attractive cycles, other than the zerosz *, may exist for Newton's method (m=2). Asm increases, the iteration functions add extraneous fixed points and cycles. Whether attractive or repulsive, they affect the Julia set basin boundaries. The König functionsK m (z) appear to minimize such perturbations. In the case of two roots, e.g.g(z)=z 2–1, Cayley's classical result for the basins of attraction of Newton's method is extended for allK m (z). The existence of chaotic {z n } sequences is also demonstrated for these iteration methods.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is, in multivariate linear regression model (Part I) and GMANOVA model (Part II), to investigate the effect of nonnormality upon the nonnull distributions of some multivariate test statistics under normality. It is shown that whatever the underlying distributions, the difference of local powers up to order N−1 after either Bartlett’s type adjustment or Cornish-Fisher’s type size adjustment under nonnormality coincides with that in Anderson [An Introduction to Multivariate Statistical Analysis, 2nd ed. and 3rd ed., Wiley, New York, 1984, 2003] under normality. The derivation of asymptotic expansions is based on the differential operator associated with the multivariate linear regression model under general distributions. The performance of higher-order results in finite samples, including monotone Bartlett’s type adjustment and monotone Cornish-Fisher’s type size adjustment, is examined using simulation studies.  相似文献

Summary Continuation methods compute paths of solutions of nonlinear equations that depend on a parameter. This paper examines some aspects of the multicomputer implementation of such methods. The computations are done on a mesh connected multicomputer with 64 nodes. One of the main issues in the development of concurrent programs is load balancing, achieved here by using appropriate data distributions. In the continuation process, many linear systems have to be solved. For nearby points along the solution path, the corresponding system matrices are closely related to each other. Therefore, pivots which are good for theLU-decomposition of one matrix are likely to be acceptable for a whole segment of the solution path. This suggests to choose certain data distributions that achieve good load balancing. In addition, if these distributions are used, the resulting code is easily vectorized. To test this technique, the invariant manifold of a system of two identical nonlinear oscillators is computed as a function of the coupling between them. This invariant manifold is determined by the solution of a system of nonlinear partial differential equations that depends on the coupling parameter. A symmetry in the problem reduces this system to one single equation, which is discretized by finite differences. The solution of the discrete nonlinear system is followed as the coupling parameter is changed. This material is based upon work supported by the NSF under Cooperative Agreement No. CCR-8809615. Several matrix variate hypergeometric type distributions are derived. The compound distributions of left-spherical matrix variate elliptical distributions and inverted hypergeometric type distributions with matrix arguments are then proposed. The scale mixture of left-spherical matrix variate elliptical distributions and univariate inverted hypergeometric type distributions is also derived as a particular case of the compound distribution approach.  相似文献

It is well known that full knowledge of all conditional distributions will typically serve to completely characterize a bivariate distribution. Partial knowledge will often suffice. For example, knowledge of the conditional distribution of X given Y and the conditional mean of Y given X is often adequate to determine the joint distribution of X and Y. In this paper, we investigate the extent to which a conditional percentile function or a conditional mode function (of Y given X), together with knowledge of the conditional distribution of X given Y will determine the joint distribution. Finally, using this methodology a new characterization of the classical bivariate normal distribution is given.  相似文献

Classical Wishart distributions on the open convex cone of positive definite matrices and their fundamental features are extended to generalized Riesz and Wishart distributions associated with decomposable undirected graphs using the basic theory of exponential families. The families of these distributions are parameterized by their expectations/natural parameter and multivariate shape parameter and have a non-trivial overlap with the generalized Wishart distributions defined in Andersson and Wojnar (2004) [4] and [8]. This work also extends the Wishart distributions of type I in Letac and Massam (2007) [7] and, more importantly, presents an alternative point of view on the latter paper.  相似文献

It is known, for example, that the eigenvalues of the N×N matrix A, arising in the discretization of the wave equation, whose only nonzero entries are Akk+1=Ak+1k=-1,k=1,…,N-1, and Akk=2,k=1,…,N, are 2{1-cos[pπ/(N+1)]} with corresponding eigenvectors v(p) given by . We show by considering a simple finite difference approximation to the second derivative and using the summation formulae for sines and cosines that these and other similar formulae arise in a simple and unified way.  相似文献

Sharp upper and lower bounds are obtained for the reliability functions and the expectations of lifetimes of coherent systems based on dependent exchangeable absolutely continuous components with a given marginal distribution function, by use of the concept of Samaniego's signature. We first show that the distribution of any coherent system based on exchangeable components with absolutely continuous joint distribution is a convex combination of distributions of order statistics (equivalent to the k-out-of-n systems) with the weights identical with the values of the Samaniego signature of the system. This extends the Samaniego representation valid for the case of independent and identically distributed components. Combining the representation with optimal bounds on linear combinations of distribution functions of order statistics from dependent identically distributed samples, we derive the corresponding reliability and expectation bounds, dependent on the signature of the system and marginal distribution of dependent components. We also present the sequences of exchangeable absolutely continuous joint distributions of components which attain the bounds in limit. As an application, we obtain the reliability bounds for all the coherent systems with three and four exchangeable components, expressed in terms of the parent marginal reliability function and specify the respective expectation bounds for exchangeable exponential components, comparing them with the lifetime expectations of systems with independent and identically distributed exponential components.  相似文献

The main objective of this paper is the calculation and the comparative study of two general measures of multivariate kurtosis, namely Mardia's measure β2,p and Song's measure S(f). In this context, general formulas for the said measures are derived for the broad family of the elliptically contoured symmetric distributions and also for specific members of this family, like the multivariate t-distribution, the multivariate Pearson type II, the multivariate Pearson type VII, the multivariate symmetric Kotz type distribution and the uniform distribution in the unit sphere. Analytic expressions for computing Shannon and Rényi entropies are obtained under the elliptic family. The behaviour of Mardia's and Song's measures, their similarities and differences, possible interpretations and uses in practice are investigated by comparing them in specific members of the elliptic family of multivariate distributions. An empirical estimator of Song's measure is moreover proposed and its asymptotic distribution is investigated under the elliptic family of multivariate distributions.  相似文献
