Planar laser Rayleigh scattering (PLRS) from condensed CO2 particles is used to visualize flow structure in a Mach 5 wind tunnel undergoing unstart. Detailed flow features such as laminar/turbulent boundary layers and shockwaves are readily illustrated by the technique. A downstream transverse air jet, inducing flow unchoking downstream of the jet, is injected into the free stream flow of the tunnel, resulting in tunnel unstart. Time sequential PLRS images reveal that the boundary layer growth/separation on a surface with a thick turbulent boundary layer, initiated by the jet injection, propagates upstream and produces an oblique unstart shock. The tunnel unstarts upon the arrival of the shock at the inlet. In contrast, earlier flow separation on the opposite surface, initially supporting a thin laminar boundary layer, is observed when a jet induced bow shock strikes that surface. The resulting disturbance to this boundary layer also propagates upstream and precedes the formation of an unstart shock.  相似文献

The results of measuring the pressure fluctuations on the wall of the nozzle of a hypersonic wind tunnel beneath a developed turbulent boundary layer are presented for the Mach number M = 7.5. On the basis of a statistical analysis, it is shown that the action of the turbulent flow is dynamically similar to the propagation of a random sequence of wave packets with continuously distributed temporal and spatial scales. Low-frequency disturbances are associated with large-scale structures of long duration that propagate at a mean-statistical velocity similar in value to the outer flow velocity. The continuous generation of weakly-correlated small-scale disturbances ensuring the maintenance and development of turbulence occurs chiefly in the inner region of the boundary layer. Spectral estimates of the power generated by the turbulent flow in the wall region of the boundary layer are presented.  相似文献

The flow control effects of nanosecond plasma actuation on the boundary layer flow of a typical compressor controlled diffusion airfoil are investigated using large eddy simulation method. Three types of plasma actuation are designed to control the boundary layer flow, and two mechanisms of compressor airfoil boundary layer flow control using nanosecond plasma actuation have been found. The plasma actuations located within the laminar boundary layer flow can induce a small vortex structure through influencing on the density and pressure of the flow field. As the small vortex structure moves downstream along the blade surface with the main flow, it can suppress the turbulent flow mixing and reduce the total pressure loss. The flow control effect of the small vortex structure is summarized as wall jet effect. Differently, the plasma actuation located within the turbulent boundary layer flow can act on the shear layer flow and induce a large vortex structure. While moving downstream, this large vortex structure can suppress the turbulent flow mixing too.  相似文献

An experimental investigation of unsteady-wake/boundary-layer interaction, similar to that occurring in turbomachinery, has been conducted in a specially modified wind tunnel. Unsteadiness in a turbomachine is periodic in nature, due to the relative motion of rotor and stator blades, resulting in travelling-wave disturbances that affect the blade boundary layers. In the experimental rig, travelling-wave disturbances were generated by a moving airfoil apparatus installed upstream of a flat plate to provide a two-dimensional model of a turbomachine stage. The boundary layer on the flat plate was tripped near the leading edge to generate a turbulent flow prior to interaction with the wakes, and measurements of velocity throughout the boundary layer were taken with a hot-wire probe. The Reynolds number, based on distance along the plate, ranged from 0.144×105 to 1.44×105, and all data were reduced through a process of ensemble averaging. Due to the nonlinear interactions with the boundary layer, the travelling discrete frequency wakes were found to decrease the shape factor of the velocity profile and to increase the level of turbulent fluctuations. Unlike the phase advance found with stationary-wave external disturbances, velocity profiles subject to the travelling wake fluctuations exhibited increasingly negative phase shifts from the free-stream towards the wall.  相似文献

The present experimental work is devoted to in- vestigate a new space-time correlation model for the turbulent boundary layer over a flat and a wavy walls. A turbulent boundary layer flow at Reo = 2460 is measured by tomographic time-resolved particle image velocimetry (Tomo-TRPIV). The space-time correlations of instantaneous streamwise fluctuation velocity are calculated at 3 different wall-normal locations in logarithmic layer. It is found that the scales of coherent structure increase with moving far away from the wall. The growth of scales is a manifestation of the growth of prevalent coherent structures in the turbulent boundary layer like hairpin vortex or hairpin packets when they lift up. The resulting contours of the space-time correlation exhibit elliptic-like shapes rather than straight lines. It is suggested that, instead of Taylor hypothesis, the elliptic model of the space-time correlation is valid for the wallbounded turbulent flow over either a flat wall or a wavy wall. The elliptic iso-correlation curves have a uniform preferred orientation whose slope is determined by the convection velocity. The convection velocity derived from the space-time correlation represents the velocity at which the large-scale eddies carry small-scale eddies. The sweep velocity rep- resents the distortions of the small-scale eddies and is intimately associated with the fluctuation velocity in the logarithmic layer of turbulent boundary layers. The nondimensionalized correlation curves confirm that the elliptic model is more proper for approximating the space-time correlation than Taylor hypothesis, because the latter can not embody the small-scale motions which have non-negligible distortions. A second flow over a wavy wall is also recorded using TRPIV. Due to the combined effect of shear layers and the adverse pressure gradient, the space-time correlation does not show an elliptic-like shape at some specific heights over the wavy wall, but in the outer region of the wavy wallbounded flow, the elliptic model remai  相似文献

Experiments were conducted in a turbulent boundary layer near separation along a flat plate. The pressure gradient in flow direction was varied such that three significant boundary layer configurations could be maintained. The flow in the test section thus had simultaneously a region of favourable pressure gradient, a region of strong adverse pressure gradient with boundary layer separation and a region of reattached boundary layer. Specially designed fine probes facilitated the measurements of skin friction and velocity distribution very close to the wall. Bulk flow parameters such as skin friction coefficient C f, Reynold's number Reδ2 and shape factors H and G, which are significant characteristics of wall boundary layers were evaluated. The dependence of these parameters on the Reynolds number and along the test section was explored and the values were compared with other empirical and analytical formulae known in the literature.  相似文献

An efficient hybrid uncorrelated wall plane waves–boundary element method (UWPW-BEM) technique is proposed to predict the flow-induced noise from a structure in low Mach number turbulent flow. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are used to estimate the turbulent boundary layer parameters such as convective velocity, boundary layer thickness, and wall shear stress over the surface of the structure. The spectrum of the wall pressure fluctuations is evaluated from the turbulent boundary layer parameters and by using semi-empirical models from literature. The wall pressure field underneath the turbulent boundary layer is synthesized by realizations of uncorrelated wall plane waves (UWPW). An acoustic BEM solver is then employed to compute the acoustic pressure scattered by the structure from the synthesized wall pressure field. Finally, the acoustic response of the structure in turbulent flow is obtained as an ensemble average of the acoustic pressures due to all realizations of uncorrelated plane waves. To demonstrate the hybrid UWPW-BEM approach, the self-noise generated by a flat plate in turbulent flow with Reynolds number based on chord Rec = 4.9 × 105 is predicted. The results are compared with those obtained from a large eddy simulation (LES)-BEM technique as well as with experimental data from literature.  相似文献

Summary The velocity profiles of a turbulent boundary layer with zero skin friction throughout its region of pressure rise, measured by Stratford in 1959, are analyzed in terms of a law of the wall and a velocity-defect law with a common velocity scale and a logarithmic velocity profile in the region of overlap. The analysis deviates from earlier work by Stratford and Townsend. It is shown that the flow in Stratford's boundary layer, even at the largest value of x 1 at which measurements were taken, is not yet in a state of equilibrium. The velocity scale for turbulent boundary layers with zero skin friction is proportional to the cube root of the pressure gradient.  相似文献

The results of an experimental investigation into the steady-state plane turbulent boundary layer in an incompressible liquid at an impermeable wall are presented. Cases of flow at smooth and rough surfaces in the presence of a longitudinal pressure gradient are considered. The results of measurements of the turbulent structure of the flow at various distances from the channel inlet are presented. A detailed analysis of the kinematic and dynamic characteristics of the flow is given. Special attention is paid to the boundary region of the flow close to the wall. A universal law is proposed for the variation in the local resistance coefficient along the boundary layer.Translated from Zhurnal Prikladnoi Mekhaniki i Tekhnicheskoi Fiziki, No. 3, pp. 126–134, May–June, 1971.  相似文献

Modifications of the turbulent separated flow in an asymmetric three-dimensional diffuser due to inlet condition perturbations were investigated using conventional static pressure measurements and velocity data acquired using magnetic resonance velocimetry (MRV). Previous experiments and simulations revealed a strong sensitivity of the diffuser performance to weak secondary flows in the inlet. The present, more detailed experiments were conducted to obtain a better understanding of this sensitivity. Pressure data were acquired in an airflow apparatus at an inlet Reynolds number of 10,000. The diffuser pressure recovery was strongly affected by a pair of longitudinal vortices injected along one wall of the inlet channel using either dielectric barrier discharge plasma actuators or conventional half-delta wing vortex generators. MRV measurements were obtained in a water flow apparatus at matched Reynolds number for two different cases with passive vortex generators. The first case had a pair of counter-rotating longitudinal vortices embedded in the boundary layer near the center of the expanding wall of the diffuser such that the flow on the outsides of the vortices was directed toward the wall. The MRV data showed that the three-dimensional separation bubble initially grew much slower causing a rapid early reduction in the core flow velocity and a consequent reduction of total pressure losses due to turbulent mixing. This produced a 13% increase in the overall pressure recovery. For the second case, the vortices rotated in the opposite sense, and the image vortices pushed them into the corners. This led to a very rapid initial growth of the separation bubble and formation of strong swirl at the diffuser exit. These changes resulted in a 17% reduction in the overall pressure recovery for this case. The results emphasize the extreme sensitivity of 3D separated flows to weak perturbations.  相似文献

The paper presents results of numerical investigations of annular non–swirling jets. The research is performed with the use of large eddy simulations (LES) and a high–order code based on the compact differences and the Fourier approximation combined with a projection method for pressure–velocity coupling. We consider various Reynolds numbers and inner shear layer thicknesses and observe that both parameters affect the dynamics of the flow in such a way that the formation of the turbulent structures follows two different scenarios. For the particular group of the inlet conditions the flow pattern is found to be similar to low–swirling jets. The instantaneous flow–fields reveal the formation of the spiral structures located in the inner and outer mixing layers. The analysis shows that the structures are the result of the instability that leads to the precession of the recirculation region formed in the near–field. The winding sense of the spirals are clockwise or counterclockwise depending on the case and azimuthal distribution of perturbations.  相似文献

It is proposed that all fully rough-wall boundary layers should satisfy self-preservation more closely than a smooth-wall boundary layer. Previous work has shown that the self-preserving forms of the momentum and turbulent kinetic energy equations for a zero pressure gradient turbulent boundary layer, at sufficiently high Reynolds number, require that the wall shear stress is constant with x, and the layer thickness increases linearly with x. Measurements in two rough wall boundary layers suggest these conditions are met without assuming a form for the mean velocity distribution, and are more likely to exist in a fully rough wall layer than a smooth wall layer.  相似文献

Premixed flame propagation against the main flow direction in wall boundary layers, a situation known as wall flashback, has been studied by long-distance particle image velocimetry with spatial micron resolution (μ-PIV) and simultaneous flame luminescence recordings. Numerical simulations of laminar wall flashback assist the interpretation of the experimental results. Inside a turbulent boundary layer, the flame propagates in discrete flame cusps pointing in upstream direction and showing a well-defined pattern of formation and break-up. In a laminar boundary layer, the leading flame region is smooth and exhibits low curvature. The instantaneous velocity fields reveal a backflow region upstream of the flame during flashback, which is constrained to the leading flame zone. The backflow is caused by an interaction between the pressure increase upstream of the flame and the boundary layer. The flashback limit is controlled by thermal quenching of the flame tip in the backflow region.  相似文献

A turbulent separation-reattachment flow in a two-dimensional asymmetrical curved-wall diffuser is studied by a two-dimensional laser doppler velocimeter. The turbulent boundary layer separates on the lower curved wall under strong pressure gradient and then reattaches on a parallel channel. At the inlet of the diffuser, Reynolds number based on the diffuser height is 1.2×105 and the velocity is 25.2m/s. The results of experiments are presented and analyzed in new defined streamline-aligned coordinates. The experiment shows that after Transitory Detachment Reynolds shear stress is negative in the near-wall backflow region. Their characteristics are approximately the same as in simple turbulent shear layers near the maximum Reynolds shear stress. A scale is formed using the maximum Reynolds shear stresses. It is found that a Reynolds shear stress similarity exists from separation to reattachment and the Schofield-Perry velocity law exists in the forward shear flow. Both profiles are used in the experimental work that leads to the design of a new eddy-viscosity model. The length scale is taken from that developed by Schofield and Perry. The composite velocity scale is formed by the maximum Reynolds shear stress and the Schofield-Perry velocity scale as well as the edge velocity of the boundary layer. The results of these experiments are presented in this paper.  相似文献

The dynamic and thermal characteristics of steady near-wall boundary layers in flow deceleration regions are studied on the basis of differential turbulencemodels. The method of transferring the boundary conditions from the wall into the flow is tested for flows with variable longitudinal pressure gradients. Using differential turbulence models in the transition and low-Reynolds-number regions near surfaces the effect of the parameters of highly turbulent free stream on the development of dynamic processes in the developed turbulent boundary layer in the flow deceleration region is studied. The calculated profiles of the velocity, the kinetic energy of turbulence, the friction and thermal conductivity coefficients, and the temperature factor are compared with the experimental data in the cases in which the boundary conditions are preassigned both on the wall and in the flow. The effect of an intermediate boundary condition on the results of the calculations is analyzed.  相似文献

Experiments have demonstrated [1] that the transition of streamline-type flow into turbulent flow in a boundary layer occurs as a result of the formation and development of turbulent spots apparently arising from small natural disturbances. A study of the nonlinear evolution and interaction of localized disturbances requires knowledge of their characteristics to a linear approximation [2]. In the current work, results are presented of calculations of such characteristics for the first two unstable modes in a supersonic boundary layer on a two-dimensional plate (M = 4.5, Tw = 4.44).Translated from Zhurnal Prikladnoi Mekhaniki i Tekhnicheskoi Fiziki, No. 1, pp. 50–53, January–February, 1976.  相似文献

A parametric study of adverse pressure gradient turbulent boundary layers   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
There are many open questions regarding the behaviour of turbulent boundary layers subjected to pressure gradients and this is confounded by the large parameter space that may affect these flows. While there have been many valuable investigations conducted within this parameter space, there are still insufficient data to attempt to reduce this parameter space. Here, we consider a parametric study of adverse pressure gradient turbulent boundary layers where we restrict our attention to the pressure gradient parameter, β, the Reynolds number and the acceleration parameter, K. The statistics analyzed are limited to the streamwise fluctuating velocity. The data show that the mean velocity profile in strong pressure gradient boundary layers does not conform to the classical logarithmic law. Moreover, there appears to be no measurable logarithmic region in these cases. It is also found that the large-scale motions scaling with outer variables are energised by the pressure gradient. These increasingly strong large-scale motions are found to be the dominant contributor to the increase in turbulence intensity (scaled with friction velocity) with increasing pressure gradient across the boundary layer.  相似文献
