Some algorithms for unconstrained and differentiable optimization problems involve the evaluation of quantities related to high order derivatives. The cost of these evaluations depends widely on the technique used to obtain the derivatives and on some characteristics of the objective function: its size, structure and complexity. Functions with banded Hessian are a special case that we study in this paper. Because of their partial separability, the cost of obtaining their high order derivatives, subtly computed by the technique of automatic differentiation, makes High order Chebyshev methods more interesting for banded systems than for dense functions. These methods have an attractive efficiency as we can improve their convergence order without increasing significantly their algorithmic costs. This paper provides an analysis of the per-iteration complexities of High order Chebyshev methods applied to sparse functions with banded Hessians. The main result can be summarized as: the per-iteration complexity of a High order Chebyshev method is of order of the objective function’s. This theoretical analysis is verified by numerical illustrations.  相似文献

We introduce a new type of Hessian matrix, that we call Mixed Hessian. The mixed Hessian is used to compute the rank of a multiplication map by a power of a linear form in a standard graded Artinian Gorenstein algebra. In particular we recover the main result of a paper by Maeno and Watanabe for identifying Strong Lefschetz elements, generalizing it also for Weak Lefschetz elements. This criterion is also used to give a new proof that Boolean algebras have the Strong Lefschetz Property. We also construct new examples of Artinian Gorenstein algebras presented by quadrics that does not satisfy the Weak Lefschetz Property; we construct minimal examples of such algebras and we give bounds, depending on the degree, for their existence. Artinian Gorenstein algebras presented by quadrics were conjectured to satisfy WLP in two papers by Migliore and Nagel, and in a previous paper we constructed the first counter-examples.  相似文献

We first present a new proof of a result of Calabi, nonnegativeness of the Hessian of the Calabi functional at an extremal Kähler metric. Then we extend the result to the general context of a reductive group action on a Kähler manifold admitting a moment map. Precisely, we show nonnegativeness of the Hessian of the norm function along a complex orbit at a critical point. Borel, Lebesgue, and Hausdorff described all uniformly closed families of real-valued functions on a set T whose algebraic properties are just like those of the set of all continuous functions with respect to some open topology on T. These families turn out to be exactly the families of all functions measurable with respect to some σ-additive and multiplicative ensembles on T. The problem of describing all uniformly closed families of bounded functions whose algebraic properties are just like those of the set of all continuous bounded functions remained unsolved. In the paper, a solution of this problem is given with the help of a new class of functions that are uniform with respect to some multiplicative families of finite coverings on T. It is proved that the class of uniform functions differs from the class of measurable functions.  相似文献

We study the integration and approximation problems for monotone or convex bounded functions that depend on d variables, where d can be arbitrarily large. We consider the worst case error for algorithms that use finitely many function values. We prove that these problems suffer from the curse of dimensionality. This is the case in particular if the elementary condition is satisfied. We also give a sufficient condition on the Fourier coefficients of which ensures that is nowhere differentiable.

Under consideration are some equivalent definitions of the class of Skolemelementary functions (analogous to the known definitions of the class of Kalmar elementary functions) and some results for this class obtained by various mathematicians. The definitions of this class were studied independently of each other, and their equivalence is proved in this paper. The question is studied of the existence of finite superposition bases in this class. We prove that the problem of the existence of such a basis amounts to the well-known problem from the theory of computational complexity.  相似文献
